Even rewatching the episodes as a fantasy removed from anything Tolkien, it still hurts.
I appreciate the choice of Lady Galadriel, as she resembles the Jacksons' one in her visage (albeit if not in her behaviour). You can see the monetary value in its visuals (despite the characters appearing separated from their environment), but it is a soulless husk.

note: I hope I will have to change my review with the coming of new episodes, but I have my doubts...

What you can see is that billions were spent on the series, but I saw a number of things that seem more amateurish than something that was extremely careful. Some of them:
- The ice stalactites, at the beginning, are very similar and don't look like they were generated by "nature".
- While the characters climb the mountain, they don't do any strength, neither in the arm nor in facial expressions. They look like they're on something with zero gravity.
- The scene where there is a big tree is visually beautiful, but the background looks disconnected and gives the impression that it is in a studio.
- When the "comet" falls, the fires around the crater don't look like they started organically. They look like they were placed and places almost lined up.
- When they are on the boat, an extremely bright light hits the characters' faces, however, the background appears to be from somewhere else, as it does not receive the same light. I can't focus on the story because this kind of failure causes me to scatter.
Worst of all, and it has been a flaw in many movies today, is the story change. I wanted to watch it to see Tolkien and not the interests of some big company behind the production.

It had everything to go right, however, they threw it all down the drain and destroyed, right away, what could be the best series of all time. They turned the series into one of the worst. Every dollar spent on its production was wasted.

I was very skeptical after the first trailers, but still wanted to give the whole series a chance, and here is my first feedback after the first 2 episodes:

I'm struck by the fact that the developers actually took a bit of a look at the Lord of the Rings lore. Unlike Peter Jackson's movies, the events of the first age are addressed here (albeit briefly). Important events such as the destruction of the 2 Trees of Valinor and the subsequent war against the dark ruler Morgoth.

About the story:
The story is mostly true to lore (so far). What is new is that Galadriel tries to avenge her brother Finrod Felagund, who was killed by Sauron in the first age. In itself a good idea, in the books Finrod was just dead and no one cared, the war just went on. Here, on the other hand, a little more importance is given to this actually important figure. However, the developers also made some stupid mistakes: the half-elf Elrond, for example, was excluded from a meeting of the royal council in the first episode because he is not a full-blooded elf...WHAT? Elrond is the great-grandson of Turgon, the predecessor of King Gil-Galad as High King of the High Elves. NEVER would they dare exclude him from a council meeting, for he is the rightful heir to the throne should Gil-Galad die! If you can overlook these mistakes, you get an entertaining fantasy adventure - but I've only seen the first two episodes, so beware, I don't know if there won't be worse mistakes in the upcoming episodes. However... the war against Morgoth is over and the free rulers of Middle-earth are preparing for a time of peace (just like in Tolkien's The Silmarillion).

So is the series well or rather poorly realized?
Difficult question... actually, it's mediocre at best.... Why? Well, Amazon has decided to make some modern adjustments to the characters. For example, the elven princess Galadriel is now suddenly a warrior (representing the strong woman in the main role) and in principle there is nothing wrong with that, BUT there is one problem: Galadriel is actually a witch and NOT a warrior. I can understand why Amazon chose this path, BUT to rewrite, replace or as happened here, rob already existing characters of their identity for ideological reasons is an absolute no-go.

My suggestion to Amazon: If you need characters in the future to represent certain groups of people or want to do inclusion for ideological reasons, please invent a new character, like you did with the elf Arondir for example. Please don't change existing characters that are loved by the fans....

I was expecting House of the Dragon to be bad due to the way GoT ended, but I was presently surprised. I was expecting Rings of Power to be excellent and have been disappointed so far. The first two episodes were slow, the CGI that everyone is raving about looks like a video game and there are plenty of shows with POC in lead roles for me to watch so there's nothing "special" here. Most of the characters with the exception of Durin and Elrond are boring so far. I like female-led shows, but so far I have zero interest in Galadriel and Elanor 'Nori' Brandyfoot -who have a lot of screen-time. Expand

The writing is pseudo intellectual nonsense that either doesn't make sense or contradicts itself. The only way the writers could make the protagonist smart is by making everyone else an idiot. Furthermore, the books this show is based on are basically ignored to craft a narrative with modern day sensibilities. The books have been translated to over 60 languages. It already appeals to a modern audience. The changes that are made actually makes it's mass appeal less than what it was. Good job Amazon. Well, I can't prove that. What I saw is some nice CGI, some partly good music and a refreshing diversity even though one needs to mention that female dwarfs, black or white, indeed have beards. But then ... the dialogues, the dialogues are so ridiculous, so abysmal hideous that it pains the viewer and evokes Fremdscham in children-spectators. The characters are shallow, the elves are not distinctive at all, the acting is wooden and the language does not as most elements of the series reflect Tolkien's work. At one point a Harfoot wants to express that she can't communicate with fireflies and says: "I don't speak fireflies" - I'm not kidding you, that's what she said. It's horrible and an insult to intellect of any kind. There are in fact so many flaws that one watches with ones jaw dropped down. Old elves? Tired elves? Elves that move without any grace at all while speaking silly and sloppy english? Galadriel without wisdom and Elrond giving the impression of a clown. What a major sorry effort this is and a shame to be associated with JRR Tolkien. My friend's 12 year old daughter asked why the elves don't speak elvish at all :D Expand

*Maybe here my review wont be DELETED*

Really Amazon? You think by deleting bad reviews your bloated abomination of a show would be saved?

People are aware so better revaluate your strategy because gaslighting your audience doesn't work anymore.

Imagine a reality where a 'Game of Thrones' spinoff is MILES more compelling (as of now) than the most expensive show of all time.

The sets look (sometimes) great. That's it. The acting is flat, the charactrrs are frustrating, GUYladriel is insufferable and the wtiting (you know, the foudation of a story) is catastrophic.

Congratulations! You baught an ip!
Now you feel what happens when you smear its name and what it stands for.

Tolkein fans will keep going. This will NEVER go away.

If only you've respected his legecy.

This is something disgusting, I have never experienced such bad emotions. Dialogues do not arouse interest, the characters are faded, boring. The show looks mostly good, yes, but the pacing is bad, camera work is dull (there is pretty much no narrative behind shots). Character introductions are absent, amount of exposition is enormous, leading to believing that shows thinks that the audience is stupid and can't understand things from context. Everything needs to be explained, even if the explanation makes no sense for the characters as they either know it already (the moment when Elrond is telling Celembrimor what Silamriles were) or there is no possible way of them knowing things (Galadriel being Sherlock Holmes in the Sauron`s stronghold). The show has lots of silly moments like the fight with a troll when only Galadriel was able to solo kill it, even though the Party was in search of Sauron, so I wonder how they wanted to deal with him if the ice troll is such a problem. Or when Galadriel chooses to jump ships and swim all the way back by herself, even though is hundreds of miles away from the Middle-Earth. I understand that showrunners wanted to make her badass with all of these "creative" decisions but it really made her silly. What is also visible is that writers couldn't write intelligently conversations to make people look wise and eternal, so they chose to either force poetics in every dialogue in a way that sounds more like a recitation than conversation, or to make everyone else stupid, so that main characters would shine.

Not to mention other Lore-breaking moments like no Celebor, Warrior-Galadriel, time condensation, two Durins at the same time, Meteor-Man, elves looking more like Wither's elves than Tolkien's, hobbits in Second Age. So far my favourite characters are Arondir and Disa, so hopefully, my opinion about the quality and lore-breaking problems won't be marked as racist. Overall, it is just sad.

The cinematography and filming locations are as stunning as the LOTR movies, and the CGI is top-notch. And.....that's about where the good news ends.
The first episode is terrible. Not only am I not interested in the characters, but it seems to be a perversion of the characters that Tolkien introduced in his books. The plot is disjointed, hard-to follow and you keep waiting for something to happen. And nothing really ever does.....
The second episode is better, but again, I found myself not really caring about any of the characters. Why is it called the Rings of Power? We still don't know.
Dry, or overly smarmy acting, and a slow, plodding, hard-to-follow plot. Character development and the story itself seems secondary (or even tertiary) to the show's focus on landscape shots and CGI special effects. It's like the producers realized that the show wasn't making much sense, so "Hey, we need to throw in a magnificent landscape shot!" or "Let's add some more CGI here!" to distract the viewer from the bumbling plot and rather diffident character development.
I'll probably watch the next episode (or two), but something needs to happen pretty quickly.
It's not very good so far.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The show in general, no lore accounted for: The show does not look like a billion dollar show, the effects are at times good, at times 10-years-old-video game like, the acting is sub par with the exception of, of all characters, the ones that show all of 5 minutes, female frodo and female Sam(Nori and Poppy) all the rest of the cast feel forced and carton like, heck even Shannarah was better madel, the score is sub par as well, does not feel middle-earth-kind of epic

Now the worst part, regarding lore, but the page is not letting me write all that so I'll say only this, Harfoots being ancestors of Hobbits is like saying that Imladris is an older city than Rivendell, they are the same but in a different language, and they did not exist until 3rd age, as a branching from the race of men

Galadriel was the most powerful being in middle earth, one of the most powerful, wisest, kindest, fairest and loved being in the whole world, both ME and Valinor, almost as magically powerful as the Valar(gods) themselves, and WISE, not the assinine warmonger she is, she could raise mountains with a twist of her hand, so putting her in armor that she never wore, and wielding a sword, which she never touched, diminishes her, not empowers her

I would talk more about lore attrocities, as most of the show is an attrocitie itself, but meta wil stop me from doing so

Even if you ignore the franchise, it is still a bad show. Wooden acting, lifeless and boring characters and a, in my opinion, badly written story with terrible pace. If you are seeking for a good fantasy show, try Game Of Thrones or House of the Dragon instead if you haven't already.

Two hours/episodes in at the time of writing. I have given it two stars for the budget more than anything. It is nice to look at but offers no substance.

This is not lord of the rings / middle earth. Tolkien's work has been torn apart. He would be ashamed of this creation. The characters are one dimensional caricatures with few to none redeeming qualities. Take Galadriel as an example. Horrible Karen of a character. Single minded. Unintelligent. Uncaring. Unwise. Shows no real emotion. Has a mind only for revenge. And all too flat in the role. Not even the need for revenge is portrayed convincingly. The exact opposite of the real character Tolkien wrote. They try to make her look good by making those around her perform worse physically. But it cannot save her character, and instead makes the entire race of elves look bad. As one of the leads in the show, her character exemplifies all that is wrong with this show. Unfortunately this trend is seen with nearly all characters shown so far. Don't even get me started with the dwarves or the "Harfoots". The show writers had a wealth of A-class writing to draw from. Decades of carefully written lore, world building and character design. They used none of it. Instead they give us this flat, unintelligent, travesty. Which dishonours the original works of the author, and offers nothing in return beyond its budget.

Anyone who gives it a positive rating clearly never read any of the books or is just on Amazon's payroll. I could write a massive review airing all my grievances with this dumpster fire but that would be redundant and also below my dignity. Suffice to say it's just generic fantasy garbage larping as a LotR adaptation. It's tacky, it's lowbrow and it's tasteless. Perhaps even more-so than Game of Thrones. -pseudointelectual dialogues, which could have been written by Tolkien if he had no talent
-bad plot
-the pacing is terrible, I was bored while wathing it. The show starts to many plots at once so it ends as "jack of all trades", with nothing significant happening for 2 hours. Its basically an overstrethed triler.
-costumes look very cheep. You can clearly see that armors are made from plastic. It would be OK for an cosplay, not for the most expensive show ever. -Elves do not look live elves. The person who decided they should have short hair must have though they make a Star Trek show because they look more like Vulkans than elves . I was like "what the hell is Spock doing here?". - the characters are bad, the Galadriel is typical "strong independent women"/Mary Sue archetype, who feels so smart and powerful, only because everyone around her is an incompetent idiot. Its not how you make a good "strong female character". -the show follows typical "multiculti" fashion where every little village with 100 or so people has ethnic structure of New York. Its just not immersive. The authors also have a wired fixation of putting interracial couples everywhere.

Overall the show is just bad, boring, and does not feel like Tolkien.
