They did to Lord of the Rings what Disney did to Star Wars. Low quality fan fiction with bad dialogue bad characters bad acting and a terrible plot. Read the books of the Second Age for the actual story.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The only reason I give this a 1 instead of a 0 is some scenic shots are decent. Characters, plot, most of the acting are mediocre. Sauron becomes an angry incel that wants to destroy Middle-earth because Galadriel will not marry him? WHAT?! Even a kindergartener could write a better plot than that. Galadriel is one of the worst characters ever portrayed on screen, and is in total contrast to the wonderful portrayal by Cate Blanchett. Bezos should go to Tolkien's grave and beg forgiveness for this besmirchment and blasphemy. Expand

I really dont mind the woman empowerment message they are trying to achieve or the black elves or dwarves, im really fine with this, this is not the issue with the show. I actually appreciate a diverse cast, but you can't substitute good writing with diversity. A good series or movie will have a diverse cast, and the viewers are so immersed that they don't even notice race or gender. The rings of power rubs your face in it. The pacing is very slow, the characters have no depth, and to make the female characters stand out, they make them loud and insufferable. They basically gave all the females masculine personalities and the males feminine personalities. This makes all of the characters unrelatable and unlikable. There is a trans person in the cast, but they are not trying to look like they've transitioned? Instead, they have a shaved head, a mans face, with boobs in a wedding dress? I'm no expert but isn't trans supposed to be transitioning into the opposite sex? The writers are idiots who think they are being edgy by pushing norms to the extremes. Instead, they've upset the whole Tolkien fan-base by corrupting the lore with their political ideologies, and piss poor writing. Expand

The writers have taken so many liberties with Tolkien's Middle Earth history, you need to look at it as a completely different story unrelated in anyway to his writings. For example, this story takes place in the First Age, about 3,000+ years before the LOTR's Third Age. Galadriel stated that her husband Celeborn was dead, when at no time in any of the writings does Tolkien present that story line. There is a great deal of conjecture if the "Old Visitor" is Gandalf. Per Tolkien's writings, the wizards (Istari), 5 in total, do not arrive in Middle Earth until the Third Age; thus, neither Gandalf, Saruman, Radigast nor the other unamed wizards should even be considered in these stories.

Again, while it is enjoyable as such, it should be looked at as a completely separate story with similarly named characters to Tolkien's stories.

This show has so much to do with Tolkien, as a carjacker has to do with the vehicle's owner.
So, I will review it as a Fantasy movie in itself.
The images are great. That was good spent money. Usually, when I see low-quality Fantasy movies (like this one), images are a fragile part.
The dialogues are appalling. That looks like a middle-school teenager writing fan fiction. Therefore, I qualify them as juveniles.
The characters lack empathy. The actors didn't help. It was two hours of me watching and trying to connect with any of them; seriously, it was impossible. It was a long two hours.
The main character looks like "Karen meets Mary Sue". Obnoxious, she is the opposite of a Commander. Being a Commander is something you earn. This swimming Karen is a quitter and an idiot. Not Commander material.
And definitely, such a person would not have survived a month in a Medieval world.
I am one of the few that ended up seeing all the episodes of Season One. I don't intend to see Season Two: I have completed my penance watching Season One.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Here is the positive I have to say:
The show definitely invested a lot of effort into making the environment look good; The scenes of the mountains, lakes, rivers, and landscape shots do look good. I enjoyed Robert Aramayo's performance, I think he's doing a good job. Lloyd Owen's performance is also enjoyable to watch. The Last positive thing I have to say is that they occasionally make this show feel like Middle-Earth.
Negative:
I have a lot of negative things to say about this show but i'll sum them up in two broad strokes: First, while the show has a good story on paper, they have executed it horribly so that the story doesn't make sense. Second, while the show has a handful (a very small handful) of positive moments, the negative ones far outnumber them and they take you out of the show, ruining what few good things the show had going for it. What do I mean by this? Well, for one thing the dialogue is particularly bad to the point that you have to backtrack to understand what is being talked about, removing you from the story. You end up asking yourself "why?" at different points rather than "wow". As the story on paper seems good, the writers went about executing it terribly. For example: In the sixth episode, it's not a bad idea to bring the tower down on the heads of the Orcs to stall them; this is a good idea on paper. However, an ancient elven tower that can be brought down by burning a single rope that held up a single piece of metal that was holding the whole tower together, is not a well executed idea. And the show has so many moments like these spread from the first episode to the last one that I find myself scratching my head and wondering "why?" more often than I find myself saying "that's cool".
Overall, I rated this show as a 2 because it has a couple good things going, but the negatives keep me from really enjoying it, taking me out of the story, thus getting a bad score.

I dread to think what state the woke writers of this show are in. Yes they have money, but do they have the respect of their peers? Do they have self-esteem? I doubt it.

Viewing it as a generic fantasy, things do not improve: the script is banal and has unbridgeable holes that will never be explained. Many things happen just to get the plot from point A to point B, but without any motivated reasons behind them to make these passages believable. Galadriel have chosen to make her selfish, quite stupid (she always gets her attitude wrong making everyone dislike her) unbearably arrogant and with the wisdom of a teenager despite the fact that when you start the series she is already more than 4,000 years old. The pseudo-philosophical dialogues made me laughing sometimes. The dialogues are mostly flat, never moved me and sometimes made me cringe at their banality. If at first I tried to turn a blind eye, as the series goes on I found increasingly awkward dialogues and ridiculous narrative choices. The entire plot seems to be written following the "perfect screenwriter's manual" in order to create as much drama (often exaggerated and poorly justified), romance and "guess who" situations as possible: it seems to be written by an AI. Only a few minutes were devoted to the creation of the rings then, and everything was resolved in no time at all, with a cringe-worthy sufficiency. Celebrimbor looks like a senior accountant, Elrond (who is one of the best characters in the series) looks like a young career insurance man. The authors took a story that is indisputably one of the greatest works of all time and trying to adapt it to modern times. You can't do that. If you need a setting that fits your series, please come up with your own ideas. In summary, the problem is not so much that the authors have strayed from Tolkien's writings in adapting the story for film, which is inevitable when transporting a literary work to film, but that the spirit of the original work has been slaughtered: this stuff is not Tolkien, but not even close. I see from reading the reviews that there are also those who have enjoyed this series, and let me be clear that I have nothing against them: in the same way, I who like to drink wine but also am not a true connoisseur, sometimes happen to drink a poor or mediocre wine without even realizing it: simply at that moment I feel like drinking a wine and whatever they serve me served in a nice goblet I will happily quaff it. This fantasy is like a mediocre wine that could (perhaps) be appreciated if it were not presented as a top-of-the-line wine. I've had a lot of good parties with €1.75 wine. But if you serve me a wine by presenting it as a top-of-the-line wine (an Amarone della Valpolicella or an Marqués de Murrieta for example), and when I taste it I understand that it is a €1.75 supermarket wine, I spit that wine out. Hence the zero given to my review. Expand

Tried to watch 7th episode but I couldn't fathom to watch it beyond opening scenes. The writers absolutely ignore law of physics e.g. surely it wouldn't be wise to lift a burning wooden beam with bare hands but our "heroes" are able to with ease. Volcanic ashes should be scorching hot, not this **** we see in the show. Galadriel trying to act caring doesn't do it for me, she sucks. And harfoots, I can't stand them. There's nothing in this show that makes me want to watch it further. I just don't care what happens. They made a lot of poor decisions for the showWhile visually impressing it is just a generic fantasy show with mostly poor writing and an unlikable main character. If you are a Tolkien fan and / or read the books it is even more painful. They made a lot of poor decisions for the show like developers with barely any experience for the most expensive show ever made. Galadriel is nothing like in the books or movies and is only defined by being always angry and burning bridges with other characters and often also viewers. As a sidenote even one of her enemies named Adar says that the search for Morgoths (Big bad guy before Sauron) successor should have ended in her mirror and at that point I agree as she wants to kill all Orcs he considers his children painfully before his eyes just to torture him (By the way Adar is a great character and worthy addition). This is monstrous and unforgivable if you are the hero of the show. Then there are the Hobbits which they have to rename Harfoots because they have only the right to the appendixes of LotR (Why was this greenlighted?). They are not different from Hobbits being just the most common type of all Hobbits. Those are horrible people that abandon everyone to death that falls back behind on their travels. This made it hard to like them. To be fair there are some good parts. I like the Dwarven stuff and characters and this includes Disa who is great (many did not expect this). Gil-Galad is also good and I can see sparkles of something that could be an amazing story. Sadly the slow pacing and horrible dialogues ruin a lot of the story. While the visuals aka the CGI effects are amazing I wonder where all the money was used. The settings, costumes and armor often look cheap. Also they name everyone who criticize the show as istaphobs. Has ever insulting your core audience helped to make a show a success? Lastly I ask myself why buying the rights Tolkien if you abandon most of what is Tokien. At the end you have a generic fantasy show that is Tolkien in name only with poor writing and not many characters I liked. I give a 3/10 and if you are more of a Tolkien fan than me you should read this as 1/10. Expand

The writing is terrible, the dialogue subpar, the lore of Tolkien is absolutely mangled into oblivion. Main protagonist Galadriel is insufferable and the most annoying character in the entire show. All characters are forgettable and when they die or fake die, I don't care. Drama and strife is forced on the viewer and it is painfully obvious. The Sauron reveal is the most heavy-handed, obvious and pathetic thing I have ever seen in film ever. I can't believe there are people out there who actually love this travesty so much to give it a 10. I'd give this maybe a 2 in a vaccuum, but this is the real world. I relegate this trash to the compactor where it belongs: zero out of ten. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Finished episode 5 somehow, but in no way can I continue. Granted, there are scenes which are nice to look at, but there are so many problems with this terribly written fan fiction. Why are the harfoots (hobbits) such horrible, cruel creatures? Why is Galadriel a blood-thirsty, revenge obsessed unlikeable character? There is so much that doesn't exist in Tolkien's world that the series is just too insufferable form the vast majority of Tolkien fans to endure. Truly disappointing.. . Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

Provides a brilliant new marker of whether or not people have the remotest taste — just ask them what they thought of this drivel!

For some very peculiar reason, a great many seem to rate it on principle (because of the diverse casting apparently). But the reality is, this I s one of the worst shows I’ve ever sat through. Only did so because I had COVID, and it was a distraction. Very funny in parts (unintentionally). An absolute sacrilege to Tolkien, to the point that you can hardly equate this monstrosity to his world. The desecration of the Numenorians was especially sad for me. Huge waste of money. The show runners should hang their heads in shame. That Amazon is going ahead with a second season says it all really.

This was so bad that I had to create numerous accounts in order to vote it into oblivion. Writing is atrocious. Acting is terrible. Costume design is bad. Specia effects are laughable at best. Music is fine though, Bear knows his ****

It is the murder of the story that carries the whole of the fantasy genre on it's shoulders. Really, making it this bad must have taken some special effort. Hats of to you, JD Payne and PAtrickMckkay.

This show has nothing to appeal to any true Tolkien fan. Any so-called "fan" of Tolkien who likes this show is either:
A. Lying B. Have never actually read the source material
C. Only know the movies/cartoons based on the work

Reasons why no actual Tolkien fan would like the show:
1. Tolkien hated allegory in all its forms. This is well documented and practically verbatim in Tolkien's own words. Meaning if you respect the author and enjoyed his works then it would be upsetting to see someone using the author's own work to do nothing but crowbar allegory into practically every scene of the show. 2. They take the names of well-known characters and then create a completely new character that shares none of the original beloved character's traits. This is not showing respect this is disrespect not only to the author but to the fans due to the way they responded when this was pointed out.

3. Do not use established known important milestones. Listen you are talking about a subject that people study with a passion some people know the history of Middle Earth better than real Earth history. Most people who are real fans know at least a rough outline of the history and even may have a favorite moment or hero. This show completely ignores the established history and milestones. This again shows disrespect for the author and his work. Then it turns into disrespect of fans who point it out.

4. Poor grammar and horrible monologs. Professor Tolkien was a professor of English and Litierute. If the writers were his students he would fail them for the amateurish writing of the show. Nothing flows no stirring speeches. Instead, you get dumb things like "give me the meat! and give it to me raw!" lol come one, and this gem "a boat sails because it looks up and rock sinks because it looks down". Yes, those are actual quotes from this atrocity.

If you stripped out the association with the beloved Tolkien and his works this show would be trashed universally since there would not any pretend "fans". Please someone at Amazon fire everyone who had anything to do with writing or running this show! You spent 1 billion and you got worse than nothing for all that money and energy.

An arrogant main character and an absolutely repulsive actress who plays her. Poorly written character Halbrand, you don't want to empathize with him. Some incomprehensible villagers and a dubious elf, they are not at all interesting to watch. The hobbits were also poorly disclosed, but the creators fulfilled their main task - they showed "diversity". In 2022, shooting such battle scenes is just a mockery, and given the budget of the series, it’s generally ridiculous. 20 horsemen for 30 orcs And it's served as WOOOW EPIC..
In general, there are already 6 hours of screen time, but the creators failed to interest me as a viewer, I will not watch the second season. One point for the gnome prince actor. The rest is miscast.
And I don't even want to compare this parody with the great films of Peter Jackson, simply because it's like comparing drawings from elementary school with paintings by great classical artists.
This show deserves 1/10

No one with a **** mind will ever rate this more than a single star. Those reviews are fraudulent. All these years I had a very high opinion on the RT and MC critics. I thought they were a lot more sensible than the audience. But they revealed their true self with this. The show's demise starts with Galadriel. Unfortunately her acting is pathetic because she cannot fully open her mouth. The story line is even worse. The one thing that I really liked are the Harfoots. That little girl really knows how to act. The rest of the characters are completely lack luster. Not a single scene in the entire show is worth watching twice. I wonder how they threw so much money on this. If they had released this as a motion picture in the theaters I can bet it would have been the most expensive disaster of all times. Direction wise one could easily see the immaturity. It really starts with the selection of actors. Photography, visual effects, sound and CGI are really grand no doubt about that . Therefore the half star. Everything else is really not worth anyone's time. The only reason I began watching this show was because of the high ratings. But alas that is so not true. I would call this fanfiction, but the showrunners clearly aren't fans as they are just making up their own BS and wearing LOTR as a skin suit.Everyone and their mother knew Halbrand would turn out to be Sauron I'm actually kind of surprised with how moronic the writing is they didn't mix him up with the pterodactyl guy from X-men. The fact that in the end he turns out to be evil (or continues to be) because essentially he got shot down by Galadriel is so dumb. Also the elves are morons because even after they realize the guy telling them to forge the rings is pure evil they do it anyways. Just terrible writing in this show all around I give 2 points for the crew and VFX people and maybe a couple of the actors since they are the only people who did a good job and the show is a pretty trash fire since the plot is god awful. It's amazing the damage Bad Robot and JJ Abrams has done to the entertainment industry. It’s not that they create great characters to root against, but rather you just want it to hurry up to something that seems to matter. I think to enjoy it you have to come in with low expectations and just accept it isn’t really designed to tie into the Jackson movies or books, other than loosely drawing from them for general and altered references. In other spots it seems to contradict what we would expect with elves often being portrayed as short humans with little foresight, self-control, reasoning, or wisdom, then seemingly important moments really just being a matter of coincidence and chance. Overall uninteresting and anti-climatic with no fight scenes or high drama moments that make any lasting impact other for being silly. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. IF the goal of this show was for me to support the forces of evil then they have completed their goal. Galadriel is not suppose to be a soldier I believe, she is also a pyschopath who wants to commit genocide. It's even more horrible when you see the past peformances done by those who play her character and its done really well its not a problem with actresses this universe has shown that. Another problem with the show why is there a bloody wizard coming from the sky? They come from the boats. Why is their a Balrog in moria? they don't dig deep enough until the third age with Durin's bane. Why do the elves have short hair it just makes zero sense I guess they spent their whole budget on the Visuals which a great and couldn't afford to buy some wigs or maybe there's some shortage?? Why are the numernorians whinny and not 8ft peak of humanity? How come when they go on the expedition to middle earth they have three boats and somehow come out with 500 horses its really not that hard to copy and past those three boats and make it into 50. Browyn or however you say her name should be dead the plot armor is ridiculous and it makes no sense how she is the leader after being berated at the beginning of the season suddenly everyone looks to her for guidance? For a show with a rumored budget of $58m per episode they really must of spent $55m on visuals. The real problem is we are going to have to deal with atleast another season of this crap as they are already filming season 2. These showrunners should be fired and they should bring in peter jackson or someone who atleast has some respect for Tolkien I am not asking for word to word the Lord of the rings movies proved that you can stray from the literature but it shouldn't just albeit changing history because oooh Balrogs are cool watch season 2 and Hobbits are popular so lets put them in and don't forget about Wizards.

No one would care if the show didn't have the Harfoots they are all horrible pieces of crap who leave their own kin behind while a lot of them are all walking around contributing nothing. IT feels so forced to have them in because they where in the movies.

This show also has no sense of just how large the world is for the trip with Halbrand going back to the Elf capital would of taken like 3 months to do on horseback Tolkien always made very sure to mention the scale of the world and just how long it takes so 6 days to get back from the Southlands or now mordor with that sexy transition is ridiculous.

Dwarven women should have full beards If you don't like it thats just the way it is.

I get that they don't have the rights to the similarion but its not an excuse to make such a lackluster disaster if they wanted to disrespect Tolkien they didn't have to make a tv show could of just pissed on his grave. There's very few ups but I rated it 0 because it's just disrespectful to Tolkien the only reason Amazon got the rights was to put The Lord of the Rings in the title of their Generic fantasy show because they know the name has weight.

So banal, so obvious, empty and controversial episodes. Nothing canonical and no plot

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This show is not awful. There are definitely worse things to watch, but I can't help but compare it to the actual lore from the books and movies. For being a prequel it changes the characters too much for them to even be considered the same characters. If you didn't watch/read the originals then it's just an average fantasy show with unlikable characters. Galadriel is the most arrogant and annoying prick, she is right about everything until the "Twist" in the final episode. Elrond is pretty good being a much younger version of himself that is seen in the later films. As a lord of the rings prequel, it's absolutely awful. Every character they try to have twists can instantly be predicted in the first few episodes. They try to give suspense around characters who we know are alive because THEY ARE IN THE MOVIES!!! The only way to make this show watchable is with friends, or with drinks.

As just a fantasy show, it's 5/10

But as a lord of the rings prequel, it's a 3/10 shoulda made the Silmarillion.

Has no basis in actual Toklien lore. They literally have made everything up with bits and pieces from the LOTR appendices, used names of characters, reused lines from the movies/books and thats IT. It is terrible.

Should never have seen the light of day. How on earth can 'the critics' be of sound mind if they promote such an obvious failure of a show.

There no good points so far in the series. The storytelling is unorganized, acting is terrible, and the character don't see to match their roles right. Everything seems strange and disconnected all the time. Like an infinity uncanny valley.

Even if we (as this review will) set aside the obvious fact that zero respect has been paid to Tolkien's work and just view it as a stand-alone fantasy series it, simply put, is a pure disaster considering the extensive budget. As a viewer you constantly fluctuate between boredom caused by the extremely low tempo and irritation over the silly plot and the unlikable characters. Almost every single scene comes across as drawn-out and unnecessarily slow. 50 percent of every scene could be cut without losing anything of value. The show constantly attempts to cover up these obvious short-comings by blasting mood-setting music. To no avail.

The dialogue is best described as cringeworthy, filled to the brim with pseudointellectual garbage.

The characters are terrible. The main character comes across as pure B-word Karen and a Mary Sue. The harfoots are unlikeable psycho-hobbits. You find yourself rooting for the main villain before too long.

The storyline is full of plot holes, fillers and conveniences and there is no universal concept of time. The script is filled with uninteresting mystery boxes leading nowhere.

The series is, lastly, full of overt modern political messaging. It's also filled with intersectional theory, meaning that "all" female characters are wise and capable by default, and "all" male characters are either uncapable or evil. Unless they happen to be portrayed by people of colour, of course. It even allows you predict the identity of the main villain with precision by simply blindly picking the most capable white male character around. Nobody wants this in a showing purporting to create something epic. Please just stop.

I can't think of anything positive except for the visuals, which most of the time are stunning. The armour and some of the CGI needs more work, though.

As a Tolkien adaption this train wreck is a pure 0/10. As a stand-alone fantasy series it's a 3/10.

I think Tolkien would be Hartbroken. Im glad he does not have to see, what Amazon did with his Absolute Masterpiece.

I was really excited for a trip into Middle Earth, this is not it.
The dialog, action, and acting are something you would expect to find in a community theater. The show is just bad, which is shocking considering the amount of money spent. Avoid.

Its like watching a western and a Ford F150 drives across the screen

Takes you right out of it, while casting is horrible the writing is also weak

This is not worth your time even if you're a Tolkien fan

I give them 2 stars because they tried.
All in all these series has nothing to do with Tolkien or how Tolkien imagined middle-earth. The Original Trilogy doing everything right compared to this CGI-trash.
