I don't think a review is necessary. Anyone who is a real fan of LOTR and Tolkien's work knows that ROP has nothing to do with these things.

I think Tolkien hasn't stopped spinning in his coffin since the release of this creepy film adaptation. Although the truth is it's not an adaptation of the book, it's some kind of fanfic. A creepy, clownish fanfic with a political agenda. Guys, it's not even funny anymore. It's sad - what's going on with movies and TV series these days.

They can call it "Lord of the Ring" and try to ride the success of Tolkien's coattails, but this is NOT a Tolkien world, but a twisted "woke" version that is disgusting for destroying middle earth as we know it. Don't waste your time watching this insult of a series to all Tolkien fans.

I found it to be very slow. I wanted more action. Galadriel is so angry, she seemed almost ethereal in the PJ movies but here she seems angry and not at all otherworldly. Really liked the dwarves though. Also the elves just felt like humans. I enjoyed house of the dragon a lot more.

One remark concerning review bombing. The only true review bombing has been happened in the last couple of days by people who actually upvote this abomination for political reasons, since in their ignorance they believe Amazon's cheap marketing strategy that all critics are just racists.

Edit: Half way through the season it gets even worse. Honestly it's even worse than Disney Star Wars. Reduced rating to a 0.

Shameless woke attempt at forcing pointless diversity down your throat using a worldwide beloved author and IP. Luckily the abysmal quality of this show will convince people that they can't just ignore the problem posed by the woke virus to contemporary western culture. How did it come this?

This is simply bad direction. There are simply too many horizontal flaws. The sets look unreal, the dialogue is flat and punch lines delivered badly, acting bad, filmwork bad, it's just generally not good. And the score is intrusive. If "it feels like a Hallmark television show production" makes sense to you, that's sort of it. Digital imaging is clear, but so clear that it feels unreal. Some of the sets look so contrived and fake, it's unbelievable at that budget. In two episodes, there were only a couple of scenes that I forgot that I'm watching something... I had to force myself to finish watching it. Perhaps it will grab me if I watch the additional episodes. I started to ignore the interruptive musical score by the end, which was good.

UPDATE: I watched S1:E3, and it actually got harder to watch, so I lowered from a 6 to 3. It's just bad.

This show has been ruined by extremely weak casting and many of the actors are unlikeable. The Harfoots were sooo boring I went to put the kettle on. Maybe one day someone will make a 'fan edit' that cuts out all the Lenny Henry scenes and black elf scenes that drag this show down, and I might watch it then, but for now I'm out.

I do appreciate the money spent to buy the rights to produce this series as a 'Tolkienesque' work. However, I think the money would've been better spent handing it out to the poor, or a cock fight, or whatever. You pick, but this was not a positive strike toward literary advancement! I guess we now at least know how much money it takes to make JRR Tolkein turn over in his grave. At the very least. Expand

Doesn't that mean that they are exploring the lands already?

Overall the dialogue is weak, unable to grab attention and the cast does not make you feel like you're in Middle Earth. This show is not a fantasy world, it is a fantasy. It cannot even come close to Lord of the Rings or the House of the Dragons

It's a pity that they didn't spend any money on the writing. The cast do their best, but this is just badly written, from plot, character and dialogue perspectives.

The showrunners deserve most of the blame here, as they have put themselves in a position where they have changed and disrespected a large chunk of the original Tolkien lore and destroyed any credibility that the series could have had with actual Tolkien fans. They have characters go to places and do things that directly contradict with the established canon.

What they have created is a generic Fantasy series, which is enjoyable enough in isolation, but with the names of famous, well-loved characters. These "new" characters do not act or behave like their original selves, and that is why this is not Tolkien.

Had Amazon commissioned a completely new series, in an original setting, and brought these production values to it, it might have done well. But this is a dreadful perversion of Tolkien's mythology that I would not even excuse as fan-fiction.

When Adar informs Arondir in Episode 4 that he has been told many lies, some that “run so deep even the rocks and roads now believe them,” it is still a thrill. Tolkien succeeded in creating a mythic world, one that has now grown vast enough through acts of typological repetition and imitation to conquer television, too.

With war brewing and the forging of the rings seemingly still far off, the first half of The Rings of Power’s first season constitutes little more than stage-setting for the struggle to come. Given the lack of quests and central commanding figures, it often makes for less-than-gripping drama. However, given that there are four more seasons already planned, and potentially dozens of new characters to be introduced, the slow and throat-clearing build is possibly a good sign.
