Some shows are great. Most are bad. Very few rise to the level of "crimes against humanity".
    Truly, a remarkable achievement.

After watching Rings of Power for the first time it was pretty bad with one of the worst season finales I have ever seen, but after watching Rings of Power for a second time... It's even worse.

We are not at the level of the movies, that's for sure. But it's not all as bad as many say either.

Don't listen to all the review bombers. Go and watch this show if you haven't already. The production all around is amazing.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Leaving aside question of how it fits into Tolkiens’s world, it’s just a bad show. Badly written, boring, and much of it didn’t make sense. Characters and even fleets of ships seem to travel instantly. The orcs, who supposedly cannot stand sunlight, run around in the sun. The main characters survive a volcanic eruption which incinerates everyone else and transforms a huge area into a wasteland. The clothing doesn’t fit, and much of the armor is printed onto the cloth of the clothing. Crowd scenes digitally multiply people. The supposed diversity is merely tokenism, as there is no explanation for the smattering of different races, no black families. I may have missed asian characters. The sword teaching scene is a fiasco. The elves look like a boy band. Long hair as shown in the films would have been far better, but an article online explains how very expensive long wigs are. And so on and so on. Galadrial is unspeakable. Just a bad show, a bad fantasy, and justly a failure.

It's weak and there are definitely some story issues but the production, visuals, acting are all great. This show is overhated.

It defies belief how laughably cheap, vulgar, and devoid of an iota of talent and taste this drivel is.

The authors (and their enablers, for the series wouldn't exist without an army of editors, consultants, and, of course, Amazon) have shown themselves for the creative impotents they are who, armed with all the money in the world, have failed miserably to conjure up a spark of magic

Casting, acting, set design, effects, and much more was just done dirt cheap, and it look's that way. Just another boring and bland pile of stank that turned out exactly as they wanted. Summarily it's cheap, poorly acted and written, and it disrespects the source material.

While the first few episodes are all about world building and character development, the show does suffer as it takes a while for it to find it's feet.
The last few episodes are where things really pick up and it's perfectly set up for a strong 2nd season.

After two Episode i am so extremely exited. The show is unhurried, wonderful atmosphere reflecting the Middle-earth fully. Very good acting, Morfydd, Markella and Ishmael - bravo. Extremely interesting montage combined with sound design gives us the atmosphere from Peter Jackson's LOTR. Soundtrack could be better

Started bearable and interesting, but I stopped watching at the beginning of the 4th episode!
This wasn‘t the Galadriel of Tolkien! Nor were the Noldor, Gil-Galad, Numenor or Elrond written in a way that captures the spirit of Tolkien.

Didn't like the music, the scenery. It does not look like the movie series,. unfortunately.
It's also too slow. But I did find myself wanting more.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This isn't Tolkien. Period! Nothing about this show feels Tolkien. The writing, stories, characters, dialogue are not Tolkienian. I've really tried very hard to like this show. I did, but after 5 episodes, I'm out. Its unbearable, specially after the insanity about the origins of Mithril and elves need for it. At this point, I think amazon is trolling us. Nothing about this show makes sense. Gil-Galad is portrayed as scheming and evil. Elendil is some low level commander. Harfoots are psychopaths who leave their own to die. Elrond has no conception of oaths and how serious and consequential they are in Tolkein's world. Durin and Disa are the only barely likable characters in the whole show. The lead character, Galadriel is petulant child. How does an 5000 yr old elven nobility have no courtly manners.. she is disappointing and poorly written, even after 5 episodes. She has only one mode and always dialed up to a 11. So many plot holes and characters that don't make any sense. Just lazy writing and poor pacing. 5 episodes in and still nothing has happened. Its like bland generic fantasy show that has Tolkien label slapped on it.. This isn't even Tolkien inspired or an adaptation. Huge disappointment. Expand

Update after the end of season 1: Yes, the review bombing and hatred directed towards the show is absurd and exaggerated. But after the conclusion, much of the criticism is justified. Maybe not the vitriol, but the show isn't well-written, the narrative not compelling, the characters, mostly bland and unsypathetic.

As beautiful as it is, and as well-produced it may be...the core

At the end of the day, it's just "not good" and "fine" at best.

Amazing cinematography cant save the Rings of Power from its bleak, dull and unlikeable plot and character arcs. 'Udun' is the only episode where the series really shines. Overall, it could have been much better. Entire characters could have been dumped or significantly changed, and some storylines feel to dragged on to satisfy the viewer. The scriptwriting is even worse. It's a real pity.

Why don't black people create something of their own, and not defile the established lore of existing projects? Surely Africa also has its own stories and legends, go ahead. But this is a rhetorical question, it is clear that the agenda is not controlled by black people .. the question is why this is being done .

More liberal garbage ruining beloved series
Same liberal nonsense that is present in every single piece of media produced in the last few years. Black characters that make no sense. Men bad, women good. Teenage girls that are stronger and smarter than men. Just one episode in, and I already know what the main focus and theme is.

Tolkien would rotate in his grave! No Isildur dont live during the creation of the Rings of Power and Gandalf didnt come to middleearth as an metroid. Galadriel is a Mother and Protector not a Warrior Gil Galad is tge Warrior. And no Sauron didnt come over as Halbrand to the elves. This show is just crap!

The writing, both in terms of the dialogue and the plot, is woeful; the show meanders from one scene to the next with so little development that one could probably summarise each episode in a few lines; the incoherence of the narrative is almost impressive, with seemingly little attention paid to the significance of events; while the world itself is simply devoid of the magic one would expect from a Tolkien-inspired series.

This brings me on to the second aspect of the show that has frustrated so many: for reasons that are beyond me, the characters from Tolkien's work are completely unrecognisable from their book counterparts, while many events from the books have been changed unnecessarily. The makers claimed to have regularly referred back to the books as a sort of creative mantra, yet that is the exact opposite of what we see on screen. Far from being reverential towards Tolkien's world, the show seems to take every opportunity to actively subvert it.

My advice, for what it is worth, would be to replace the writers, producers, etc. with more capable people who actually respect the source material, and hire Tom Shippey to consult on the show in order that Tolkien's world may be more faithfully reproduced going forward.

Adar’s début drips with signifiers. ... When Adar informs Arondir in Episode 4 that he has been told many lies, some that “run so deep even the rocks and roads now believe them,” it is still a thrill. Tolkien succeeded in creating a mythic world, one that has now grown vast enough through acts of typological repetition and imitation to conquer television, too.

With war brewing and the forging of the rings seemingly still far off, the first half of The Rings of Power’s first season constitutes little more than stage-setting for the struggle to come. Given the lack of quests and central commanding figures, it often makes for less-than-gripping drama. However, given that there are four more seasons already planned, and potentially dozens of new characters to be introduced, the slow and throat-clearing build is possibly a good sign.

The Rings of Power is a reminder of what drew many of us to epic fantasy in the first place: wonder. ... This series set in an ancient realm displays one dazzling and painterly landscape after another. Power also doesn't skimp on action. [12 - 25 Sep 2022, p.10]
