The first episodes just confirmed what I feared before - this is not Tolkien, this is not Middle-earth. This is a generic fantasy with wokeness and current agenda. Galadriel is some Mary Sue from a fanfiction.net story written by a teenage girl. This is bad. And totally disrespectful towards Tolkien lore.

Then you have galadriel my favourite character from the lore/books, now my least favourite character from the show. So annoying, horrible and angry towards her friends / soldiers 'one track minded', everything galadriel isn't. Then we come to the action scenes, a troll attacks the entire group one shotting multiple men on the way over, then galadriel has a 1v1 'dance sequence' spinning her sword about in front of a green screen until the troll dies instantly to just her attacking. Some of the worst combat choreography i've ever seen. The only positive is the visuals/sets and I feel sorry for the talented few who were in charge of these decisions while amongst the children writing the scripts. Feels like a fan fiction that has had 1b$ thrown at it.

People who believe this is what fantasy is I feel sorry for you. Imitating poetic lines, costumes that dont make sense, characters never speaking normally to each other, only in riddles. When in reality the writing sound like children came up with the lines in their English imaginative writing essay for their highschool exam.

Second, why are all the main elves (except Galadriel) so ugly? I'm not interested in any of them because they all look weak or old or dumb. Celebrimbor is supposed to be a smith, yet in this series he looks like a 60 year old man.
But, I did like the scenery and costumes. Everything looks very beautiful. The soundtrack, however, was very generic, not even close to the soundtrack in PJ's trilogy, but comparing this with the trilogy is probably too much to ask.

The score is great and I like it feels similar but does it’s own thing. The costumes are pretty good, I find that being so similar to the movies feels strange given how far the storylines are separated in time.

The set design is mostly very well done - but for cinematography - a few seems were really off and I felt they were actors in front of a green screen. There was a glaring miss during one flashback seen that looked low budget. One of the fight scenes, was something you’d expect in marvel though - they were clearly trying to copy one character from the movies but it just felt … laughable.

The intrigue around one character is a nice break from the other plot points and I’m excited to see more.

I believe most of the cast and the showrunners for sure never read a book written by Tolkien, they only watched the Peter Jackson Films (which i like) and its shows in the series as they copied much of the Locations and the settings.
All in all a Disaster, the only believeable actor who portrays his role very good is Ismael Cruz Cordova as Arondir, the rest is mostly miscast.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This show has an absolute plethora of problems, from small to very very large. The biggest is that it fails to create a fantasy world that feels like the world Tolkien created. Armor is clearly made of plastic, dialogue is either overly complicated in an attempt to sound high brow (it fails anyway) or ripped out of our current day English (no one ever said "OK" in medieval times). Personalities that we know from Tolkien's writings have been massively changed to the point they are those characters in name only. The Elves act just like humans, indeed with the exception of their Spock-like ears, look just like humans. The bullying scene at the beginning is ridiculous...behaving like human children is just one of many things that remove their other-wordly atmosphere from them. Characters make super illogical decisions (jumping our of a boat in the middle of nowhere with no way to get home wtf), or say super illogical things (when hunting Sauron yes you actually WOULD want to go where sunlight "fears to tread" (more shoddy dialogue there too)). The acting is forced or unconvincing in most characters...only a few actors seem to be comfortable with their role. The initial premise is flawed as well - all the Elves knew Sauron was a Maiar (basically a fallen angel)...so they should have known that he'd be able to come back....Galadriel being the only one to know makes no sense. And Galadriel is either always right, angry, or both, and can do anything, without flaw - not a believable character. Where are the Ripleys from Alien, the Sarah Connors from Terminator 1 and 2? There's a lot more I could say (the pacing.....or lack thereof!) but I think I've provided enough detail to back up this rating. There was zero respect shone to Tolkien's lore, so zero is what I'm giving to this show. Expand

For whatever reason, the writers have written these character to be soulless and completely unlikable and for me that’s a deal breaker. The other problems is the editing, makeup, costumes, pace, and the hit you over the head injection of politics — though, I ignored the politics in an effort to like the show… and I really wanted to like this show.

The editing - was so jarring that I couldn’t tell where we were in the timeline — characters seemingly had magical teleportation capabilities. The makeup - had the harfoots and humans look like they lived in a dumpster, yet the female harfoot had impeccable lipgloss and rouge. The costumes - were so generic for most of the characters … just made them dingy on the humans and harfoot. The elves smilingly don’t change closets at all for long stretches of time, yet still look pristine. The Pace what killed me was the pointless dialogue that dragged on and never really made a point that drove the plot. And finally The Politics - I try to avoid using the term “woke” because it’s so over used and with Amazons ROP the problem isn’t unique to entertainment. The problem is the inability to support strong female characters without diminishing and ridiculing the male characters. Amazon has managed to make all of the make elves look like feckless tools. And they’ve managed to make the human males come off as stupid and bad (bad guys) only to contrast the greatness of the female or POC characters. When Amazon claps back at critics by calling them racists or sexist, they fail to look inward and see how they’re depicting certain people and themselves eliciting the negativity… or maybe that’s the entire point of their actions.

That said, it wasn’t all bad. The dwarfs were really well done and had great personalities… The character Disa made those scenes enjoyable… though she did benefit from unusual good editing and writing. …. Also, the visuals were quite good and looked like piles of cash, but that’s the most tacky part of it all — it’s indicative of the times we live, money buys everything but good taste and talent.

A shallow and uninteresting take on a timeless classic. The user reviews currently sit at a 2 at the time or writing, let’s hope the number of seasons doesn’t reach such a lofty number.

    I have now seen the first two episodes;
Although I read the books a very long time ago, I hardly remember anything... Furthermore, I don't usually care how similar a TV/movie is to the books. If it's good, it's good. Then you might wonder how wise it is to pay a lot of money for the rights and then remake it too much. There is often a reason why a book is good, take it away and the point is lost. Watched the episodes on an 85" TV with a Dolby Atmos system.

    Really good:
Photography and CGI, it's mostly really, really good. Sure there are scenes that could be better, but it was never so bad that I was put out of the mood.

    Ok but not bad:
The music, ok but doesn't take advantage of the 7.1 system, barely 2.1 if you're going to be picky.. But nothing I was bothered by like the music in the trailer.

    Bad:
The dialogue is downright bad. Feels like it was written by theatre students. The way the Elves talk feels absurdly stilted, could be in an amateur theatre in a Shakespearean play.

Maybe nothing wrong with the pacing, I like "slow" stories, but it was unengaging... Several times I fast-forwarded, and that's not a good rating.

But then there's the issue... casting/diversity... Sorry, but it doesn't work for me. The problem isn't that there are dark actors in the show, but how they exist. The issue becomes hard for everyone to understand and even talk about, Racist vs. Leftist... If the show had made some effort and wanted to include dark actors, they could find a way to make it natural. Like there's a dark race/group/harfoots coming from "the lands beyond the desert" or similar who are running from evil, or something like that. Or make all the harfoots black... I'd buy that too... Took me about 1 second to come up with the set up that would make it make sense.

But as far as I know, most breed in the normal way, and normal biological laws apply, i.e. black parents = black children. So it's more incredible that there is diversity of appearance in a small group than that there would be dragons in reality. The above does not make anyone racist, but provides a simple explanation for why different groups have different appearances.

he alternative is to completely ignore biology and assume that children's appearance is randomized at birth, which would also be ok if the show gave that as an explanation...

If you are going to devote 50 hours to the series, if diversity is so important, you could have spent a few minutes on a better presentation that would probably have removed 95% of the criticism of diversity. In other words, give an explanation and make it credible. Rating: 3 out of 10 , will not continue watching. Doesn't feel engaging enough.

I would call this fan mad YouTube-like show, but you need to be fan to actually made fan show, and these guys are not fans, although they persistently claimed it for publicity purposes and tried to convince us that they work according to Tolkien and that they are his big fans.
Nothing shows that this is the most expensive series of all time, when there are shows that are visually much more beautiful. For example, a direct competitor House of the Dragon, which for now, in my opinion, is nowhere near as good as the original GoT series, but it looks much, much better, has good actors and a solid script.

Beyond things like that, the backgrounds might be pretty, but look fake with characters in front of them and dialogue that tried to sound wise, but was mostly nonsense in the form of bad allegory. A rock looks down... What?!

If you want a low end, darker, blonde (lol) Xena with identity politics, that's mostly talk and little action, this might work. But this uses the name "Lord of the Rings" and it's not. This makes up it's own lore, completely changes or makes up bad characters and is boring. Even taking LotR out of the equation, it's boring and that's the worst thing you can say about entertainment. I'm not even angry, I call it like I see it and "You shall not pass!"

I agree with the people that complain about review bombing. Most of those 4 and 5 star reviews are fake, lol. Review bombing happens at both ends of the spectrum, but true review bombs tend to say almost the same thing over and over and tend to say little more than a short sentence. This is not that, nor was I rude like the name calling shills or fake "Galadriel" attacking people.

Amazon refusing to let people rate and review this show on their site says it all. They've done everything to stop, censor or shame through lies, anyone who thinks this is less than the most perfect thing ever made... and they've failed, time and again, only making things worse for themselves. So, yeah, lowest rating since this is NOT LotR, but lies that it is.

Where to begin with this predictable disappointment? Seriously... For starters, it feels amateurish through-and-through. I could just 'see' every scene getting shot, and the poor editing (it really is bad. No fluidity between cuts, often noticeable lack of background continuity, etc) and merely adequate acting only exacerbated that. It felt like a lesser homage to so many things. I could just 'see' every scene getting shot, and the poor editing (it really is bad. No fluidity between cuts, often noticeable lack of background continuity, etc) and merely adequate acting only exacerbated that. It felt like a lesser homage to so many things. The scene near the beginning which introduces the multiracial hobbits (sorry, 'harfoots'...) was taken straight out of Hook with the lost boys. Only very poorly done. This series so far is sappy, saturated, unengaging, unimmersive, and dismisses the source material in fundamental ways, only to replace it with unnecessary drivel. Totally formulaic, with undeserved swelling orchestral music over pretty and ultimately vapid imagery. Hope you like glittery shots of shimmering forests of soft lighting. So much soft lighting.

They bastardized Galadriel, and basically turned her into a less charismatic Xena. In general, elves are cool. Or at least they should be. They were impressive for all kinds of reasons in Middle Earth. Rankin/Bass elves were amazing. Jackson's were... ok. For some reason nowadays, it's common to portray them as effeminate, preppy-emos. Well, they certainly did here. When not trying to force awe with a sledgehammer, the dialogue is just facile words coming out of a sad-puppy-dog-type face. Unless it's Galadriel, who's a neurotic-paranoid Xena, talking about the arbitrary evil she senses.

And of course the polarizing issue - the rather inorganic multi-diverse representation. I don't have a problem with elves as whatever colored skin as a general concept. I think racism is anachronistic and disgraceful. I also think one can criticize the opaqueness of the casting choices, within the parameters of the Middle Earth universe, and not be considered racist. It saddens me that we are in a place where this distinction cannot be made. It breaks immersion, and totally thwarts the long-nurtured understanding of the ins and outs of how Middle Earth works.

That universe happens to not really have any people of color in it, canonically speaking. Largely because Tolkien was inspired by Norse mythology and things like Beowulf. If there were a show about African mythology and had some Asians in it, i'd be making the same points. People love Tolkien. Serious fans who have had LOTR embedded in them since growing up might get reactionary if fundamental aspects are changed for the alleged sake of equality. And the ones who don't care about these common sorts of modifications or appropriations, in my opinion, are not truly fans. Probably of anything, since ideology supersedes any kind of taste refinement whatsoever.

You have elves behaving very uncharacteristically, like elf kids bullying other elf’s, elf soldiers disrespecting and disobeying their commanders. The main character Galadriel has an air of contempt towards everyone and is dismissive of Elrond (her own son in law, and somehow she looks much younger than him). Pacing is poor, in two hours of screen time we barely see any development in the plot and they fail see reel me in with any interesting characters.

Unfortunately that was expected. Amazon failed in everything except graphics, yes graphics are descent but everything else is bad. They had all the money in the world but they failed to create Tolkiens world that is written and already known for about 70 Years. How in god's name they could fall? They had only one job not to destroy the original but they did exactly opposite. Great jobUnfortunately that was expected. Cringe worthy. Tolkien would not approve. This feels like sad attempt to capitalize on the Lord of the Rings name. Corporate greed run amuck

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I tried to watch with an open mind but woah, this sucks. Galadriel is such an unlikable, overpowered character. The pacing is agonizingly slow and the acting is meh at best. The story is not engaging at all and not a single character provokes an emotional investment.

The cinematography was good for the most part and the only reason I gave any score to this dumpster fire.

Incredible visuals, mediocre music, terrible writing, combined with a wildly unqualified group of actors. Would’ve been much better off just making up their own fantasy world since they had no interest in Tolkiens universe, or making any of the characters likable. Complete mess, and the entire project deserves criticism

The first two episodes are glorious. I can't believe this is getting review bombed. I'll admit that I'm not a book reader and that I also didn't like the Jackson films, primarily because I couldn't get past the CGI.

If people are mad about this show because it deviates in significant ways from Tolkien's stories, I can understand the frustration. However, it does seem odd since this is

If people are mad about this show because it deviates in significant ways from Tolkien's stories, I can understand the frustration. However, it does seem odd since this is essentially a prequel based on sketches of ideas from the the LOTR, right? Is whatever that has taken place in this first two episodes REALLY undoing Tolkien's work?

I'm giving it 10 stars for its breathtaking joy. There is so much heart in this series so far. It's perfectly cast and the script and score are fantastic. This is possibly the best looking fantasy film I've ever seen. It looks like it cost twice what Amazon reportedly spent.

Let's hope they can carry this energy through and give the story a satisfying conclusion.

Adar’s début drips with signifiers. ... When Adar informs Arondir in Episode 4 that he has been told many lies, some that “run so deep even the rocks and roads now believe them,” it is still a thrill. Tolkien succeeded in creating a mythic world, one that has now grown vast enough through acts of typological repetition and imitation to conquer television, too.

With war brewing and the forging of the rings seemingly still far off, the first half of The Rings of Power’s first season constitutes little more than stage-setting for the struggle to come. Given the lack of quests and central commanding figures, it often makes for less-than-gripping drama. However, given that there are four more seasons already planned, and potentially dozens of new characters to be introduced, the slow and throat-clearing build is possibly a good sign.

The Rings of Power is a reminder of what drew many of us to epic fantasy in the first place: wonder. ... This series set in an ancient realm displays one dazzling and painterly landscape after another. Power also doesn't skimp on action. [12 - 25 Sep 2022, p.10]
