I tried to turn my brain off from Tolkien lore and the Peter Jackson movie and watch this as simply a fantasy show but the dialogue is just terrible: "Why does a boat float and a stone can not?" highlights one of the worst piece of dialogues I've ever heard in all my years of watching TV.

Also awful is the fact that the series feels more like a soap opera than high fantasy. The music which added to the prestige of Peter Jackson's works is terrible and non-existent in this series. There's essentially no theme or piece that lifts scenes and adds vitality and emotion. With this budget they should have gotten a much better composer than Bear McCreary - who I have only heard doing "Agents of SHIELD" but even then, the show's theme song was distinct and recognisable.

It's incredulous for a corporation to spend this much on a show and have it suck this bad. This is a terrible series.

    It is awful!

Everything is so sharp and lit! No out of focus backgrounds, or any kind of atmosphere!
All the WHITE MALE characters are cowards, dumb, or jerks! But Galadriel (KAREN-DRIEL) is the perfect Mary Sue character, there is! It is a feminist bullsh_t!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The first episode was nothing special, but it wasn't bad. I honestly looked forward to watching the second episode.

But after two episodes, the series has already devolved into contrived silliness, closer to what I'd expect from a low-budget network TV show than from from a high-budget blockbuster.

*S1:E2 - Elrond enters a high stakes rock smashing competition(?). Meanwhile, Galadriel jumps the shark.*

And it was jumping the shark, wasn't it? The protagonist, a leader among the wisest people of Middle Earth... tried to swim across a friggin' ocean. Are they even trying?!

Call me when they bring in Peter Jackson.

Loved it! It really sets a new high bar for what can be done on streaming. The acting is excellent and the visuals are amazing. It's also the update to the LOTR IP sorely needed. Check it out for your self, don't fall in the trap of the negative reviews from people who clearly didn't even watch the show.

Boring…is the first thing that comes to mind after sitting through the first two episodes. The writing/dialogue is nonsensical, the characters are one dimensional, and we have modern day things like bullying on full display. Elrond is described as a ‘politician’, which I can’t imagine Professor Tolkien ever using this word is his depictions of middle earth. And the list goes on and on…

This is not a show for the Tolkien fan who is read the Silmarillion or Unfinished tales. The changes to the characters and lore is unforgivable. The story they give us is poorly written. The characters are unlikable and the dialog is terrible. Most people will not want to waste their time with this series. It's a shame as I really wanted to like this show.

Unfortunately, even outside the uproar over virtue signaling and the breaking of canon, there is very little good and far too much bad in this show.

    The Good.

Some of the CGI landscapes are epic. Particularly Khazad-dûm, the dwarf kingdom. The best part of the show was the portrayal of this place and the dwarves in general.

Lenny Henry as Sadoc Burrows is one of the few believable and likable characters despite some terribly written lines.

    The Bad.

As good as the CGI was, the implementation was poorly executed. The characters placed in front seem divorced from their surroundings. It breaks the illusion and leaves this feeling of fakeness.

The music at times was off. Rising to a giant crescendo at odd times. Too loud at times. To comedic at times. There were some good parts but the bad ones kept dragging my attention away from the scene to listen to what was going on with the music.

    The just plain awful.

The writing was terrible. Really terrible. Not only was the dialogue bad but the storyline, in general, hasn't budged and a quarter of the first season is gone. Why they put a billion-dollar investment into the hands of two talentless hacks with so little proven experience, is a great mystery.

The acting is equally bad. They chose poorly by not supporting the cast with some proven talent.

Nomvete as Disa was one of the worst. Terrible accent. Weird eye thing and just being overly dramatic in general.

Morfydd Clark as Galadriel was the worst. The writers might have intended for her to be a tough female lead you sympathize with but she came across as completely unlikeable. I think it's a combination of poor writing and Clark's constant angry face. When she doesn't have angry face on she has stone face on. Missed some real opportune times to build some sympathy for her character by being strangely stone-faced during what should have been an emotional scene.

Last, the portrayal of the harfoots was disgraceful. They wanted them in so bad, canon be damned, they shoehorned them in and completely blew it. Instead of coming across as heartwarming and endearing, they are clownish buffoons dressed like hobos. They should be known as hobofoots. The cherry on top is the awful Irish accent that they inexplicably have.

The result of all this is Tolkien fans, and fantasy fans in general, everywhere being left with a giant case of blue balls. This really failed on so many levels. In the end, I didn't feel blown away and eagerly anticipating the next installment, I didn't even feel like I was back in Middle Earth.

The "talent", and I use that term loosely, behind this clearly does not understand Tolkien's work. One of the key parts of which is the use of unlikely heroes. Simply compare superhero princes warrior Galadriel to Frodo Baggins.

If they would have hired some real writers, brought in a few talented actors, and dropped all the forced attempts to "modernize" Tolkien's world, this would have been a home run. I mean Peter Jackson already gave them a blueprint to make this show a success. What a shame.

The show insults our intelligence with dumb and cringe dialogues, woke propaganda and ridiculous action scenes. Completely disrespects Tolkien's work. Another toxic disguised show trying to push the same hateful, childish and shallow message.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The production value is GREAT. The show looks really good, WAY better than MCU stuff, and on par with Game of Thrones. The soundtrack is spot on, and I liked some characters, like Elrond and Durin. But here's when things start to go south for the show. The first two episodes are boring as hell. Galadriel's portrait is plain bad from the get go, and I've seen the "girl gets bullied by the other kids" scene a dozen times, at least, and it only gets worse. She behaves like she doesn't care for anything besides her revenge, even risking the lives of his fellow soldiers to achieve it. A little bit of wisdom would go a long way to make her character likeable, but she's just unbearable. I hope things get better, cause taking for the first two hours of ROP, this show doesn't live up to the Tolkien works in almost any way. Expand

Haha, this is so funny to see how admins fight the User Score bellow; they programmatically make the same Dislike Count as the Like, but with a little bit more high number (+2). The score tells by itself that the show sux.

You probably won't find any rings here; it's too black over here, can't see anything.

    The score is totally deserved.

Such a disapppointing departure from the riveting lore steeped in historical context to forefully accommodate today's norms and preferences without purposefully serving the narrative, which is wafer-thin throughout the first two episodes by the way.

I watched the first episodes. I also read all of Tolkien's books and did some academic work on them back when I was an undergraduate. It is outrageous that the series is using Tolkien's work and legacy for its own political and activist agenda. This doesn't represent Tolkien's work at all!

Tolkien had bad days. Tom Bombadil could have been less ridiculous, Goldberry more meaningful. However he had an instinctive knowledge of what makes something epic and resonant.

Rings of Power doesn’t seem to have a handle on what makes people emotionally engage and empathise with characters caught up in events beyond their control, forced to rise to a challenge.
Instead we have the usual roster of Mary-Sues contemptuously despatching monsters without effort while their adoring peons pick themselves up off the floor.

If Frodo had Simply Walked Into Mordor after slaughtering everything that tried to stop him then tossed Gollum and the ring into Mount Doom while repeatedly kicking the Mouth of Sauron in the crotch for fun, Jackson’s trilogy would not have been as highly regarded. Rings of Power screenwriters take note. When you write characters that are unstoppable you run into the Superman Effect- there are no threats so there are no stakes. Learn to do better.

Jeff... Or the person who is in charge of Amazon for real work - you can't invest so much money and do such mediocre things. For the second time I suggest (the first was about the New World game), if no one really knows how to do the right things, then you can hire me - at least you won’t look so miserable and you could avoid major mistakes. And the quality of the series is still very low.

If the series were just like the movies, it would be boring! I personally think that no matter what Amazon would have produced, people here would have complained and cried about it. That was clear in advance! And then the new variation in skin tones seems to be a main complaint. I'm losing my faith! Lord of the Rings is a work of fiction, detached from the bonds of the earth. Just because skin color is often tied to a specific culture in our world doesn't mean it has to be the case in this series. Humans are not bound to a particular cultures because of their physique, but because of history. The world of Lord of the Rings has a history of its own though, so why would there be **** racial segregation??? And just because it was more monotonous in the previous films and books, luckily it doesn't have to be the same in newer works! Art just keeps evolving!

If you can't handle that, at least don't try to spoil the fun of the series for others! Almost everything I see here is driven by hate. Keep the hate for yourself, I don't need it!

Morfydd Clark, who plays the main character, is the one ring to bore them all, despite apparently being stronger and more skilled than any other elf. She looks angry or annoyed the entire time, which ironically, is the same look on my face while I watch this. This is not Tolkien's Galadriel. Other characters are just as bad, some were not even supposed to be there. If they weren't going to portray the characters correctly, then why even use the LOTR name?

It's truly heartbreaking that studios today are unable to respect our favorite stories, our fondest memories, our cherished nostalgia. Instead, they always believe they can do better, that they can improve what is already the best of the best.

Now they are hiding their heads in the sand, manipulating, hiding, and deleting honest reviews, and outright assaulting fans with valid criticisms. This is a complete and total embarrassment, and someone needs to answer for it.

The armor looks cheap and often LOOK like they are plastic. I also noticed armor being printed onto shirts. The characters were destroyed, putting existing ones in positions and doing things they never did. And making new ones to do things existing characters already did for no reason. They messed up several of the best characters in the series. They took people who didnt exist in the 2nd age, call them Harfoots (which is a hobbit, one of the 3 kinds) and pretends they are not hobbits. I dont understand the need to make Galadriel so unlikeable. Why do they need to destroy established lore? Why is there a weird push to have child nudity? I understand that changes need to be made when adapting a book to a movie, and given the size of this series I would expect less changes as they have the budget and time to include more; but this show purposely, and drastically change so much. I'll wrap this up by saying it was bad. On every level. For every 1 thing I thought look good, they instantly ruin it with bad dialog, cheap costumes, power ranger like wire work, poor writing and more.
Save your time. Even the mess PJ had to take over and finish for Del Toro, The Hobbit, is better than this. By far. Watch that and the original trilogy. Hell, go do some chores you have been putting off. It's more fulfilling picking up dog poop or pulling weeds from the garden than watching this.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Prolog itself was kinda ok. First part with young Galadriel and her bro was good, some of the dialog was a bit pretentious, but overall good. The shot of the Trees would've been amazing if they didn't spoil it already. I wanted to see Morgoth, that didn't happen, so that's sucked. The scene with Sauron was pretty cool.

The battle scene was also already spoiled. It had a cool shot of dragon roasting an eagle. The scene were orcs are attacking Finrod was kinda stupid. They were just kinda pushing him like he's trying to get in to the mayor's office without an appointment. Then Galadriel steals his ugly letter opener.

Galadriel is hunting for Sauron and she's leading a merry band of elves in the Northern wastelands. The scene were they climb the ice wall was pretty bad. They are just free-handing it, stabbing knifes and pikes into icicles. And Finrod's knife doesn't snap as Galadriel is hanging off of it?

The ice troll scene is very stupid. The design of the ice troll was pretty bad. The fight against the troll was terrible. Also, Sauron is now leaving his mark at every place he visits. That's convenient. Galadriel now knows that seeing Sauron's mark means he is somewhere north, and couldn't possibly went somewhere else. Definitely went north few hundreds of years ago.

Anyway, she wants to go north, other elves say nope, and they do some cringy stuff with laying swords on the ground, idk. And even though later Galadriel says she will go after Sauron even if she needs to go alone, at this time I guess she doesn't wanna go alone, so she travel all the way back to see the king.

Long story short, the king grants Galadriel and elves a free trip to Valinor. I found this to be very dumb. It feels like they're trying to say that elves are held hostage in Middle-Earth and they can go in to the West only if the king allows it. I'm pretty sure anyone not under the ban can leave, or just commit die and have your spirit fly back. Anyway the ship sailed all the way across the ocean and then some stupid light appears. What was that? They should just sail to the shore and that's it. Whose idea was to have this dumb light? Must be hard to fall asleep in Valinor with these stage lights blasting your eyeballs non-stop.

Anyway the dork next to Galadriel starts scraming "GRAB MY HAND!!!!". Ok, dude, she's standing right next to you on a boat. You're both gonna end up in the same spot. What's gonna change if she grabs your hand. Well, she jumps over board and start swimming back to Middle-Earth. I guess she didn't need to walk through Helcaraxe this time. Halbrand was kinda cool.

I've already seen the buzz cut elf plenty of times before, so it didn't really had the impact as the very first shots Amazon released. I still think it's pretty bad, but during the show I got over that quickly. The "romantic" scenes with the lady had me cringing. There was no chemistry there. Still better love story than Twilight.

Anyway, some cow has oil coming out of her utters, so they decide to make a trip to the place where that cow wandered off and ate something, allegedly. And it's a day's journey! How does a cow wander off a day's journey distance? Is it a flying cow?

They find that orcs (maybe something else too?) is digging tunnels from one town to another and attacking the people. That was really stupid. Seems like a gigantic waste of time to tunnel between two town a day's journey apart, just to leap out of the tunnel and start attacking. These town have no walls or anything. Just walk to the town and do the same.

And even though the tunnel is already at the town, orcs still don't attack. Maybe they're waiting for the cover of night. Nope. All the villagers go to bed and start migrating the next morning.

Also the scene where the underground tunnel is actually touching the floorboards if the house is stupid.

The discount hobbits were very boring. Everything about them was not interesting at all. After the meteor dude shows up, I was interested in him. He seems to draw a lot of stuff and I was trying to figure out what he's trying to say, and who he really is. Probably the most interesting part of the show.

Nothing really interesting in Moria. There were some ok shots of Moria, Durin and what's-her-name had an ok dinner scene, they have more chemistry than Brondir.

Overall, intro was ok, Meteor Man had some mystery that was intriguing. My favorite character so far is Arondir's elf friend that smells like dry leaves. Few other scenes were good or ok, few other scenes were really bad or just stupid, but mostly it was just boring. I was checking my phone every few scenes. I think I will watch a few more episodes because I wanna find out what the deal is with Meteor man and Halbrand, and I wanna check out Numenor, but I don't think I will stick with the show for long. 3/10

Couldn't even get past the first 20 minutes. Everything was lackluster and mediocre.

Adar’s début drips with signifiers. ... When Adar informs Arondir in Episode 4 that he has been told many lies, some that “run so deep even the rocks and roads now believe them,” it is still a thrill. Tolkien succeeded in creating a mythic world, one that has now grown vast enough through acts of typological repetition and imitation to conquer television, too.

With war brewing and the forging of the rings seemingly still far off, the first half of The Rings of Power’s first season constitutes little more than stage-setting for the struggle to come. Given the lack of quests and central commanding figures, it often makes for less-than-gripping drama. However, given that there are four more seasons already planned, and potentially dozens of new characters to be introduced, the slow and throat-clearing build is possibly a good sign.

The Rings of Power is a reminder of what drew many of us to epic fantasy in the first place: wonder. ... This series set in an ancient realm displays one dazzling and painterly landscape after another. Power also doesn't skimp on action. [12 - 25 Sep 2022, p.10]
