The story is non-existent, the pacing is painfully slow, the script is amateurish, acting is poor and well-loved characters from the books are unlikeable here. The showrunners make a passing reference to Tolkien's characters whilst ripping the timeline to shreds and to what purpose? They say that such a long timeline couldn't be filmed without constantly killing off characters (something Game of Thrones did even with a shorter timeline). There are a number of ways this could have been done successfully such as compressing around the major events of the 2nd Age:

    Season 1: SA1200 - 1600 - The re-appearance of Sauron, forging of the rings
Season 2: SA1600 - 1700 - War between Sauron and the Elves, Numenor saves the day
Season 3: SA 2000 - 2300 - Origins of the Nazgul, shadow falls on Numenor
Season 4: SA 3175 - 3319 - Sauron taken prisoner, Numenor destroyed, Elendil & sons escape
Season 5: SA 3319 - 3441 - Foundation of Gondor & Arnor, War of the Last Alliance

Another method, that would have allowed the showrunners to introduce characters earlier, would have been a Highlander-style reminiscing of past events.

Is it really a good idea to alienate what should be your core audience, the millions of book lovers worldwide that know the lore and chronology better than that of the real world? Would it not have made more sense to hire tried-and-trusted individuals to write/produce such a flagship production or maybe actually listen to the advice of learned Tolkien scholars such as Tom Shippey?

There may be some good moments, but show is at times very boring and slow-paced. The writing is also more like a mediocre German soap-opera than Tolkien's "unwritten book".

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. light spoilers here - the basic world-building of Tolkein is ignored. The main character named here Galadriel has nothing to do with the character in the films and books. She would be as fully formed and well positioned as a first generation elf at the end of the second age as she was at the age of the third. She would be six and a half feet tall and shining, not five feet tall and people checking her ears to see who she is. Here we have an underdog cutie dependent on her long dead big brother's knife and learning from a 30 year old human man how to think. A hobo "certain grey wizard" is amnesiac - drooling, setting himself on fire and being used as a pack animal. A love story for the ages between characters barely touching hands, and time spent setting up another love story between characters who can't really matter. Off brand hobbits who don't exactly eat their own, but close enough. An island going to war without any assurance there is something to war against, a war party starting with volunteers who were thrown off a ship for not being good enough the day before. I gave this show 4 chances - the basic bones are rotten, the writing makes no sense, it cant get better. Often pretty, though. Expand

From there follows that what we are shown as not be Middle Earth as we know and like it but a view of a Big US Corporation about today's world. That also means that the show will break and otherwise misrepresent the original work as much as it sees fit. This alone prevents to rate it better than 4/10 because I want to see Middle Earth as Tolkien created it and not the Amazon's views of today's world. Unfortunately the writing is poor, the plot is slow and the characters are clichés even for a generic fantasy show so that it is even far below the theoretical maximum of 4/10. Expand

A missed opportunity, I hope that they instead of cramming all of the Second Age into 5 seasons, had made different storylines with the Fall of Numenor, Galadriel's role in the Second Age, and the real story of the forging of the Rings of Power.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I’ll start off by stating I’m not a Tolkien lore or Lord of the Rings fanatic. So, I really don’t know if the show is staying true to the lord or not. I’m reviewing the show so far (through episode 4) simply for the writing, acting and visuals. The first thing to mention is the visuals are very well done. The world looks amazing and the character costumes (for the most part) all look great and believable; especially the orcs, the look awesome. The acting is fine, but the quality varies from character to character. The main character, Galadriel, is the one I like the least. She’s very bland and boring and not very convincing. Adar is the character I’m most interested in so far, he hasn’t been in the show much but he has been the one I’m most interested in. Durin and Elrond are also good character. Most of the others are forgettable. The plot so far leaves much to be desired. We’re 4 episodes into the show and I still really don’t feel like I’m being “pulled in” or like I have that feeling where I can’t wait till the next episode because I have to know what happens. Overall, it’s been a very slow progressing season so far with too many characters I really just don’t care about and not enough really happening to keep me invested and want to keep watching. 5/10 so far. She is somehow flawless, commands the northern army(tolkien never mentioned it), is always right and can apparently best 5 Numenorian fully armed men in two moves and then scale the tower to the King's chamber assassins creed style. It is so far beyond logical, you have to laugh and it's clear they have made her a mary sue in armor that can never do wrong.

The show has a logic problem as well by making Galadriel the protaganist in that she isn't even in the last battle of men and elves at the conclusion of the age. She resides in the west and has nothing to do with the most pivotal moment of the age. So much for the "commander of the northern armies".

Also the "diversity" factor has been ramped up to beyond ridiculous. That scene with all the women at the start of S01E04 was like a UN cabinet meeting with literally every race on the planet there. Also the love interest of the black elf character has a son who isn't remotely the same race. They haven't even tried to make it believable or realistic. It's just "diversity matters" and to hell with logic.

Also Isildur looks like an islander race while Elendil his dad is a white guy and his sister looks slavic. You can't make up how badly they have fumbled the basics and it ruins all immersion. Don't get me started on the story and character development.

Such a shame what could have been a series for the ages is just another garbage tier woke CW series with pretty graphics and an amazing score. So sick of these corporations ruining treasured IP's. It's sheer hubris

As a fan of Tolkien's world, in writen and movie form, I really enjoy seeing Middle Earth during a time where the world has not fallen into pieces yet, the civilizations are still grand and majestic. And they really know how to show this off, as we have many moments where the show just presents us a new city and let's us take in their size and grandure. I also really like the overall plot. It's a smart approach, how they managed to put together different plot lines that are very character-focused and have secrets and question marks, even for fans of the book. And despite the extrem complexity of the books this show has been adapted from, they manage to break down the lore in a way that it is understandable and digestable for newcommers. And I really, really appreciate the fact, that they manage to keep the dialogues and characteres grounded and believable as part of their world. My major worry has been that they would try to make all the dialogues and characters "witty", a sickness that has grown over skript-writing ever since Marvel started to become the big player in franchise-production with their Superhero-characters. But no such thing! It's not, that the skript is entirely without humor or fun, it's just more low-key and fits the tone of the world really well. The weaker points of the show so far has been some of the characters. Three episodes in, and there is a huge gap between some of the more likable characters with a lot of personality and some more... let's generously call them "bland" characters. And given that, as I mentioned before, the individual plot lines are very character driven, it's a problem that some characters really are not up to the task yet to really carry their scenes. Another issue after three episodes is, that... not much seems to have happened so far. Given that these three episodes come together to a total of over 3 hours (or approximatelly the length of one of Peter Jackson's movies in the same world), it really doesn't feel like a whole lot has happened yet. I don't mind a slow burn, but if you have several plot lines running parallel, it would be good to have at least SOME of them be a bit differently paced. However, I have to say that I am pleasently surprised. It's a pretty damn good translation of Tolkien's world onto the screen and a solid attempt of creating an engaging narrative for a rather difficult part of the history of this universe. If it keeps going in this way, I will end up really enjoying myself. So far, I would absolutely recommend it! ! Expand

After watching half of season 1, it's clear the show is rich in style and poor in substance. Each episode barely moves the plot along, several characters feel completely unnecessary, the star character is insufferable, and the dialogue is borderline cringeworthy. The writers need a major course-correction in season 2 if this series has any hope.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I think people are overreacting. I have gathered from the overwhelming amount of horrible reviews that 1. the acting is terrible, 2. the CGI is too good (Idk how that’s possible), 3. it’s too “woke,” and 4. the story is bad

Let me start with one. Yes, the acting is not perfect, an,d at times, it is slightly cringing. But the vast majority of the time, it’s good. Not amazing, but good. (remember, this is a tv show, not a movie) the main reason people believe the acting is trash is that they see one cringe moment and only view the acting from that.

Two. this CGI is impressive. The best CGI ever. But, I do feel, at times, it’s overproduced and gives the show a video game-like vibe. But I’ve only seen that happen once in the first two episodes.

Three. I can’t believe I even have to explain how a story works; it’s NOT REAL. It can be based on things, but to its core, it is FANTASY. FICTION. “OMG THERES A BLACK ELF???? WHAT EVER ARE WE GONING TO FO???” I can not stress this enough; it’s not real. So the only reason you can be mad at a black dwarf or black elf is that you are racist. Period. And I bet you if this show had only white characters and male leads, people would be raving about it. They would celebrate how impressive the CGI is, how the acting is spot on, and how the story feels like Tolkien wrote it himself.

Four. The story is terrible. There are two parts to this argument. One, it’s boring, and two, it’s unfaithful to its original work. I can only speak to the former because I am not fully immersed in Tolkien’s works. To say the story is boring is entirely wrong. It’s the first two episodes. It’s setting the stage. Nothing shocking is supposed to come from these; that happens at the end. Now for the side that argues it’s not faithful to Tolkien’s work, I would have to disagree somewhat. I don’t know much about middle earth, but I know that the general story is correct. But I see how some parts might have differed, but that’s what you’ll get when you make a show based on the work of a dead man. It’s not going to be perfect, so we have to hope that it’s at least accurate in some ways, and it is.

So basically, the show is getting way too much hate, and people need to learn that 1. you need to give it time, and 2. not everything will be as perfect as the books. That goes for anything that was initially a book made into a movie.

Show is terrible. Violations of lore abound. Pacing bad. Cast quality bad. Story bad. Dialogue terrible. CGI good. Musical score good. Nothing Tolkien but in name. No innovative or inspired writing whatsoever. Not sure who this show is for or why they decided to throw out all of the known facts about characters.

If "it feels like a Hallmark television show production" makes sense to you, that's sort of it. Digital imaging is clear, but so clear that it feels unreal. Some of the sets look so contrived and fake, it's unbelievable at that budget. In two episodes, there were only a couple of scenes that I forgot that I'm watching something... I had to force myself to finish watching it. Perhaps it will grab me if I watch the additional episodes. I started to ignore the interruptive musical score by the end, which was good.

UPDATE: I watched S1:E3, and it actually got harder to watch, so I lowered from a 6 to 3. It's just bad.

Very disappointed. The show has too many clichés, the protagonists have very thich plot armour and there are too many conveniences. And for the look for 50 million per episode, I expect the backgrounds to look good. I work in the film industry myself as a matte painter and it is no longer a problem to create very good backgrounds in the PC. In contrast, the armour of the High Elves looked so cheap. Pure knight's armour from the Middle Ages, no special shape or ornamentation indicating elven art. Then the clothes of the dwarves were a joke. Just the way they walked in their armour, I thought they put children in it. From their faces and appearance, the elves were probably just people with pointed ears. They had nothing graceful and sublime about them, beings who are thousands of years old and immortal. What imbecile came up with short hair? But the whole show has nothing to do with Tolkien. There is only the name and the places but nothing else. Everything we criticised from the beginning has come true. This is a 50 million joke. Expand

    Cons
    - They've completely changed and mischaracterized incredibly important characters.
    - Not true to the second age lore
    - Galadriel is for some weird reason on this Vengeful, bitter, angry crusade at the expense of her Soldiers, friends, and family. it's like they've wrote her as feanor and it's a huge disappointment

A prime example of big business throwing money around to buy the rights to an IP they have no intention of respecting for the mere purpose of trying to 'buy' fans as if they are livestock; cattle to be herded into their corporate pastures so they can be milked like cash cows.

Apart from the very high production values, this is a decidedly mediocre series made far worse due to its cultural insensitivity. Plot holes, nonsensical character behaviour, Marvel-esque (but executed poorly) action sequences, shallow characters and ofttimes woeful, secondary-school-level writing make this a great disappointment. There are even several instances that outright copy notable moments from the original trilogy of movies in a weak, vapid attempt to awaken the affection and nostalgia people have for those wonderful films in a vain push to buy goodwill. And we're only 3 episodes in. It's pathetic.

A wizard getting angry and rising to his full height whilst the world dims around him? Check. People bickering and fighting while a lone, brave, quiet voice grows in power until it causes them all to turn in stunned silence? Check. It's so weak and derivative.

If you enjoy dialogue that is constantly vague and constantly says cheesy things similar to, "Sometimes the wind that seeks to extinguish a flame, ends up inflaming it' then you'll be right at home here.

Oh, and a note on their casting choices:

If it were any other region's folklore that was being made into a TV show, people would be screaming for the creators to show respect and cultural sensitivity but it's based on white European heritage so it must, apparently, be abused and vandalised.

Listen here Amazon (Disney etc,..), if you want to create worlds that fit into your cultural agenda then go ahead...but could you at least consider doing so by creating something new? Is that too much to ask? To ask for creative people to, er, you know, create? Don't just attempt to ride on the coattails of established IP's and their fandoms whilst not honouring the works in question. It's artistically bankrupt, creatively cowardly and outright dishonest.

You can't take something people love, change it drastically and subsequently complain when they're not happy. As for those who complain the negative reviews are from bigots, well, how comes HotD is doing fine? That's as diverse as it gets. How comes there are even reviewers who said it's mediocre?

Oh, and if you loved Cate Blanchette's ethereal, graceful and yet subtly powerful and awe-inspiring Galadriel then you'll probably be as crestfallen as I was to see the character reduced to what the modern world apparently refers to as a 'Karen'. It's as if they deliberately want you to dislike her, tremendously. She's almost always irritable, distrusting, constantly acting hard done by and treats people as if they're servants no matter how helpful and patient they are being.

I know it's many years before the Galadriel we know from Jackson's trilogy but still, she's horrible.

In summary, they had no intention of keeping to the feel of the original books and movies. They wanted the money-making potential of the IP, but nothing else. They also seemingly wanted the material, story and characters to fit their 'culture-war' agenda and so hired writers (I use the term loosely) based on that rather than talent. This is the result. A creatively poor mess with mixed up priorities.

If you really is a person and not a bot then you have total rights to dont like, criticise and complain about the show. But for sure this show is not a zero, and is know that people is camuflage their "you know what" into another stuffs just to negativate this show...
    1. Only 3 episodes was release until now, and so far is great episodes! Defenitly not a zero!
    2. Amazon only have the rights of Lord of the Rings and Hobbit, this show is being created based in the appendices of this books related with the second era!
    3. This is a adaptation, the books still there, intact!
    4. If Legolas can be a badass elf in Peter Jackson version of the LOR, then Galadriel can be a badass warrior in this show for sure, cause, she actually is in the books!
    5. Call that spectacle a bad quality is less than an opinion... its a lie and you know it!

Rings of Power is a boring series based on a scenario by elementary school students. The elves (indistinguishable from humans) with watchtowers scattered over a wide area and keen eyesight were suddenly all captured by the orcs and you didn't even bother to show it. And almost the entire show is filled with such illogical events. Pleasant only CGI (sometimes) and scenery.

Bland, boring and poorly produced. A disappointment
How something that costs so much can look so cheap is beyond me.
The music is also quite bad and it does not come even close to LOTR. But most importantly, everyone has the emotional maturity of a high schooler. I can't take this show seriously. Characters are 2 dimensional and boring. Galadriel feels like she is only capable of anger

This may have worked as an original child aimed fantasy, but to put it in the same category as lord of the rings is just not going to be accepted by fans.
It seems that the people who made this do not know what makes lord of the rings what it is. It is not the orcs, hobbits, sauron, elfs or whatever. It is the feeling of epicness, friendship, danger and stakes. All of this is lacking here.

i fell asleep during eps1. eps2 was a little better. eps3 i think im done.

1 star is because it does look pretty, except for the orcs warg (this looked really bad)

wooden acting. written by rejected CW writers.

It's serviceable at best which isn't ok for such an IP and budget. This isn't just another show, this could should of been THE show of our life time. Additionally none of the changes that were made were necessary and just a slap in the face that takes us out of the immersion.

If Ed Wood had filmed Beowulf it would probably turn out better; at least it would have been endearingly hopeless, not just hopelessly bad.

The show so far is visually gorgeous, but sadly the characters are bland & the story boring. I very much hope that it improves. The first two episodes start a story that is Tolkien adjacent at best. The non-Tolkien characters are meh. The Harfoots are cute but why does that small tight-knit community have so many different accents? Disa could be good but is relegated to being a trope. He at least looks cool. Unfortunately, Galadriel is the saddest part of the show so far. They've given us nothing to like about her as of yet. The only thing she seems to be good at is emotionlessly staring into the middle distance.

This series is pretty dire. The lead character is very unlikable - which seems to be a mixture of the actress and the writing. The rest of the cast are just boring and forgettable. This show is terrible. It is as slow as possible. Galadriel is absolutely far from the original image and causes only irritation. The creators could not clearly tell a single story, and this is not surprising, this show has almost nothing to do with Tolkien's books. Maybe all the people involved in the creation of this series should have read his works at least once?

Just another adaptation that has no respect to its sources. And no, you cannot hide behind the "this era is not mentioned in any written sources bla bla bla". It is obviously imposing a political agenda to the audience.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The visual effect of the whole series is incredibly disgusting, the beautiful and elegant image of elves in my mind destroyed, replaced by vulgar and mediocre-looking goblins with pointed ears. And their acting and mediocre lines can not save their looks. The whole series is a disaster, immediately remove it from Tolkien! Expand

Barely barely "woke". I wouldn't even have noticed if not for the review bombs. Production and effects are top notch. Acting and script is decent enough. Storyline is a bit slow thus far, but I expect good things based on the interesting foundation already set. I'm thoroughly engrossed.

Adar’s début drips with signifiers. ... When Adar informs Arondir in Episode 4 that he has been told many lies, some that “run so deep even the rocks and roads now believe them,” it is still a thrill. Tolkien succeeded in creating a mythic world, one that has now grown vast enough through acts of typological repetition and imitation to conquer television, too.

With war brewing and the forging of the rings seemingly still far off, the first half of The Rings of Power’s first season constitutes little more than stage-setting for the struggle to come. Given the lack of quests and central commanding figures, it often makes for less-than-gripping drama. However, given that there are four more seasons already planned, and potentially dozens of new characters to be introduced, the slow and throat-clearing build is possibly a good sign.

The Rings of Power is a reminder of what drew many of us to epic fantasy in the first place: wonder. ... This series set in an ancient realm displays one dazzling and painterly landscape after another. Power also doesn't skimp on action. [12 - 25 Sep 2022, p.10]
