The story is all over the place, there are lots of characters who seem to serve no purpose for the story, instead the story seems to bend over backwards to serve the justification of characters being there. I thought Galadriel was supposed to be the main character, but after the introduction she just seems to drift from scene to scene doing stuff that serves no purpose to the development of the story while we are watching some b-plots that spawn from unnecassary fabricated conflict and go nowhere. I would be %100 ok if this show did not jump to conflict and took the time to show us characters in their daily lives (its supposed to be an "era of peace") so we get to know them, and the world. But no characters are stuck trying to overcome pointless obstacles in arc that lead nowhere.

Galadriel is rewarded by Gilgalad with the gift of returning home to Valinor. The gift is not his to give her as only the Valar can give her that and, in fact, they already did. After the War of the Wrath the Noldor were pardoned by the Valar, this included Galadriel, Elrond, and Gilgalad but they all chose to stay in Middle-Earth anyway. I could go on endlessly about all of the facts they got wrong and the ones they made up but it all boils down to this: this is not Tolkien

What the show runners have managed to do is capture the spirit of Tolkien. The careful world building and slow unfolding of each character’s thread shows how much respect this show has for its audience. It’s clear the show runners approached the material with the same devotion to beauty and love as their protagonists, who are charismatic and very well acted. The folks panning this show for straying from the source material clearly love the canon and want to defend it. But consider how miraculous this show appears in an environment of formulaic, adrenalized big budget shows that sacrifice moral imagination for intensity, or Amazon’s own Wheel of Time series, which has deconstructed its source material to the point of being almost unrecognizable. This is a rare show, precious! I hope the fandom eventually embraces this show; we need more fantasy like this. Expand

But Galadriel is described in a few words and has no depth whatsoever, I mean not even human being level of depth. There're a couple of guys and gals who almost can pass as characters, and there're a couple of characters who look genuinely alive and are fun to be around.

But I will definitely not judge them just by their looks. The acting itself was okay and that's what matters.

Shout as much as you want, "fans" - the show will be a success because it's simply good. How dare you even say something like "This is a bastardization of Tolkien". So much money and effort has been spent to create a new adaption in his universe and just because you don't like the choice of some actors and "the lore" you give the show absolute 0s. It's a FAKE UNIVERSE for goodness sake. It's not the rewriting of the WW2. The movies also rewrote things - but somehow nobody was bothered then. The internet is just a bunch of crybabies now. I for one hated the Fantastic Beasts when compared to Harry Potter, but I would never give it a 0 just because it took a different direction from what I would have liked.

Is this what creativity has been reduced to? Success measured by numbers? There was always something magical about the Lord of the Rings books, and that magic was driven by Tolkien's life experiences. Experiences which are most obviously much different than the creators of this show, who would have failed miserably to come up with anything even half as profound and meaningful as Tolkien did. I will only criticize and mention what is in the series. Warning, I'm spoiling everything. Cheerfully.

The series opens with Galadriel as a child making a small boat, but his skiff is heckled by other child elves who sink it with stones. Big Brother Galadriel (whom I will call Brother Galad from now on) comes to comfort her. In effect :
The stone sinks because it looks at the bottom. What is the secret of a small boat? He is looking up!
Well, let's move on to this passage of philosophical depth worthy of several books all at once, and the strange message between the evil stone and the boat bringing hope, then the fact that Galadriel announces that sometimes the light is at bottom of the water and we no longer know who to follow… What shivers and questioning of deep thoughts, when we are not even five minutes away from the episode. Ah, and the children are naughty, we can't say it enough, school bullying, it follows you even among the elves #wearenotthesameracebutwedealwiththesameproblems.
But this banal scene of the daily life of elves does not wait, since we are offered a splendid view (full of CGI. It's beautiful, huh, but it shows. And it's not because it's beautiful I just see a very, very beautiful video game. The performance is probably remarkable, but the interest?) on a gigantic tree. This one is burning. Why ? THE GREAT ENEMY MORGOTH. Why ? I just told you. Why ? Ah, yes, he is WICKED. So he burns the trees and leaves the whole land of the elves on fire! Where does he come from? We just told you, he's the big bad guy! Everything was perfect in the best of worlds, it's just stupid that we forgot our great enemy. And the great enemy broke the light!
Suddenly, the alliance of the elves with the elves is organized and goes to defend itself! Yes yes, you read that right. The army of the elves leaves, on another continent where they have never been, to defend themselves against the one who destroyed their light. I call it revenge, but to each his own.
CGI, pyrotechnic explosion all over the place, ridiculous fights, I'm not even going to dwell on the battle scene that follows. It's ugly, it's badly choreographed, the orcs hug, it's boring.
Ha, but there are elven cities that burn though, after it's been going on for years. So, if I put it in context:
    - A guy burned the light in Valinor then broke in Middle-earth
    - The elves are chasing him to break his head
    - battle battle
    - The elves take the opportunity to settle
    - The elves are crying because their colonization is going badly
Ah, and then the elves make mountains of helmet molds. Nice tribute.

Then Morgoth is defeated, the orcs multiply under the command of the big bad Sauron (who is really big). Big Brother Galad promises to find him, but Sauron finds him first. And as we know that the first to find has won, bah, bye-bye Brother Galad. You were a well of philosophy in which to drown, too bad. Ah, and Sauron makes a trident on his skin, a mysterious sign that the wisest of elves, therefore the wisest creatures, have failed to decipher. And then Sauron has claws. I prefer not to know in what circumstances you died, brother Galad, but I hope that everything was agreed.

Either way, Galadriel is revered. She swears to avenge her brother and so she goes on the hunt! Remember the orcs that proliferated under Sauron's command?
Ha, well, there's more. Forgot. Sauron he went solo, presumably because the orcs went mushroom hunting. Suddenly, Sauron, he flees. Why ? I will have to refrain from asking this question, otherwise, we will not move forward.

So Galadriel and her team hunt Sauron, across seas and mountains, where she makes it clear to us that everyone has forgotten Sauron, because their hunt has been going on for decades. Moreover, arrived at the top, the companions of Galad say to themselves that in fact they are at the end of the world and that they are fed up, because no one has ever found Sauron's fortress and it has been years that no one has seen an orca. (They are decidedly well-informed for guys who have been tracking Sauron around the world for decades, but let's move on.) They ask themselves such a fundamental question, how can beings survive in a place without light? So they must have perished!
Good. I'm doing this spoiler while watching the show (it's a little choppy, but I don't think I'm losing much) and I promised not to anticipate anything. But ? RIP the dwarves. RIP the trolls. RIP the Balrog. And others, but like I said, let's pretend all the rest doesn't exist and move on.

I would have loved to continue, but there is a word limitation.

Remember Peter Jackson's movies? They were criticised in the past because of some differences from the books, but they were acceptable since making a movie from such a book, for the sake of cinematography and screenplay, required some changes. Not like the horrible elf/dwarf love story of the hobbit, that was really ridiculous.

But compared to this, those were golden, epic movies.

This is something else. I literally started cringing after 15 minutes of watching.

This Galadriel is not Galadriel, her behaviour is totally out of character.

And Celeborn is an old man. Unfortunately, there is no such thing like elderly looking elves since they don't physically age. This is basic knowledge. But since this is just a fanfiction, that's alright, I guess.

Let's spread a pitiful veil on the casting, and the omnipresent one-way ethnic change on shows nowadays... but, again, it's just a fanfiction.

But the main question is : Why don't you create your own universe and stop ruining the epic stories we grew up with just to put up a messed up show with the sole purpose of creating yet another useless politically correct product? This is ridiculous.

Characters, bad. The creators have butchered every Tolkien character they got their hands on, and replaced those they couldn't with shallow original characters.

The biggest problem with this show by far is the horrendous dialogue and writing. The constant wannabe-poetic, deep and ponderous exchanges are so damn exhausting. You can't put that kind of stuff everywhere at the beginning of the show, you actually need to earn it. And you'd of course need competent actors if you want the lines to be delivered well. Now, It gets old really quick. It's impossible to get immersed into this when every utterance is expressed in an "epic" and "dreamy" fashion. You can't throw this kind of floaty stuff at us at every turn and expect us to buy in. We need to actually get to know the characters before you start with the serious and epic stuff.

Then there's of course the obvious problems with the forced diversity. It makes the whole world seem incongruous and incoherent. Tolkien's Middle-Earth is not 2022 LA or NYC. Peter Jackson's LotR felt organic and historical. RoP feels modern and fake.

And the music, it's so lackluster. I can't remember a single tune or theme. The costuming is also really bad, especially the hairstyles. What's going on with these modern haircuts and fades? Are they just incompetent or where did the money go?

The acting isn't great either. Especially Galadriel, it's like she's about to break down crying after every faux-epic line she's forced to deliver. And all of the other characters are put down to make her seem more grand and wiser. It just makes her seem insufferable.

The fight scenes also do not work. If the troll can grab an elf and crush him against a wall with no damage, where are the stakes? The goofy "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" tier moves don't help one bit either.

And these are the first two episodes. You really need to hook the viewer in some way at this point, whether it's with the writing, characters, music or world building. This series fail in every single regard.

It is a visually beautiful show, it is in process and you have to give time, to see how the story unfolds. But it is completely enjoyable. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Don't listen to the paid 10/10 reviews of people claiming to be "real" Tolkien fans. This fictional tale of the second age contradicts almost everything canonical Tolkien wrote. From the elves only Gil-Galad is portrayed faithfully and fells like an elf. All of the elves act like humans with the slight difference that they speak overly complicated, in fact so complicated it's hard to understand them sometimes. GalaDRiel gets bullied in the beginning. The worst offence is certainly GalaDRieL if you know what I mean. Nothing about her character is canon starting from how her brother died and how she is a commander of the northern armies to how she is commanded to go to Valinor ??? (as if you can be commanded to go there) and then refusing at the last minute and deciding to jump off the ship(I guess her genius plan is to swim back to Middle Earth). The funniest thing was when Elrond the actual commander of Gil-Galad's armies told GalaDRieL how she is the commander of the northern armies and she replies with something of the sort of spoken like a true politician. I kid you not I totally expected Elrond to respond with "What is a politician my lady?". It was so stupid how they showed the darkening of Valinor and The War of Wrath for like 30 seconds casually skipping 2 thousand years. For the amount of money they spent they could've at least shown us Morgoth, Eärendil, Gothmog, Ancalagon or at least the Valar throwing Melkor through the door of night. They didn't even bother to tell us the name of the war, like everyone is just supposed to know. Episode 2 was just very boring to be honest with you. I liked how they made Moria, although it seems like they copied DA Origins. I was expecting the dwarves to have a scottish accent, but I think they went overboard with it to the point where it seemed like they were just mindless/primal brutes who care only for drinking, eating and mining. And I spotted a scene at the end that troubles me a lot, I think we might get a plotline where there's conflict over a Silmaril in the second age?, but we'll wait and see. The whole plotline with harad and the southern lands is somewhat interesting which proves the point that they should've just made a series about the travels of the Blue Wizards in the East and South. Oh and we have a wizard in the second age as well now, how very original. Also I thought his fall as a meteor was very Tyrael-esque. All in all this is total fanfiction, and the acting and dialog aren't very good either. I only place 2 stars because the visuals are on a very good level. Expand

When Adar informs Arondir in Episode 4 that he has been told many lies, some that “run so deep even the rocks and roads now believe them,” it is still a thrill. Tolkien succeeded in creating a mythic world, one that has now grown vast enough through acts of typological repetition and imitation to conquer television, too.

With war brewing and the forging of the rings seemingly still far off, the first half of The Rings of Power’s first season constitutes little more than stage-setting for the struggle to come. Given the lack of quests and central commanding figures, it often makes for less-than-gripping drama. However, given that there are four more seasons already planned, and potentially dozens of new characters to be introduced, the slow and throat-clearing build is possibly a good sign.
