Amazon can't lie to true fans, this is a defilement of Tolkien's work and an insult to intelligence. A show full of intersectionality topics and totally unaware of the world they try to portray, the show runners want to put their own ideas and corrupted morals on the work of a man who devoted his life to it. A shame and a lost opportunity.

Here's the deal, plain and simple: people DO NOT LIKE what is being made, how it's being handled, and many do not want this product in the first place. Tolkien is Tolkien and can't be franchised in the same way Star Wars or Marvel have because it's the life work of one man who has long since passed away. People want Tolkien and like what he made. JD Payne and Patrick McKay along with corporate executives, producers, shareholders, and modern writers making up things and attaching them to purchased names is not Tolkien. They can buy rights but they can't buy love or acceptance from the public at large. I for one am not liking any of what I've seen so far. Expand

I was so excited to see a new part of the world. On watching the show, I have to say, I am greatly disappointed and left highly unsatisfied. The show is slow, boring and lore breaking. It borderline laughs in Tolkien's face and I do not appreciate it. It’s taken a wonderful franchise based inspired British Folklore and washed away the character and you are left with an extremely bland fantasy show. The characters are nothing but annoying. The plot is already frustrating and the writing is rough. I will not be finishing the series as it clearly isn’t created for fans of the IP. It seems that this show has been made to attract children and Game of Thrones stragglers. I understand branching out to attract a larger audience however not to the stage that IP do many loved, gets watered down to the point of been an entirely differ franchise. I don’t think that their is any salvaging this show and I hope that the next people to take on this franchise actually are fans and don’t just want to recreate things to their own vision while ruining all that payed before. I hope this show gets cancelled so no more money is wasted on this and it can be release to a company that can do it justice. Definitely would not recommend if you are a Tolkien fan. Definitely would recommend if you are mentally challenged. Expand

Incredibly poor given the budget. Let's pretend it is not Tolkien, what are we therefore being offered? Shoddy and superficial story, visual effects simply not pleasant to watch. Galadriel's acting alone manages to ruin the whole show. It looks and sounds like one of those fantasy series that are offered at lunchtime on TV. The dialogue is abhorrent, and the overall story is nowhere near what Tolkein had written about regarding the events of the Second Age. I genuinely felt lost because the characters were in places they've never been, doing things they never did with people that either never existed (like the Harfoots) or shouldn't be there at all (looking at you Mr. Wizard who toooootally isn't Gandalf). To me, it seems like they're trying to create their own "Fellowship" and are doing so by completely rewriting the events of the Second Age so that these characters they've shown have to join together to unite the realms of Middle Earth as the actual Fellowship did. And the only thing I have to say to that is.......why? If the showrunners wanted to tell their own made-up story within the world of Middle Earth.........why didn't they just do that? The world of Middle Earth and the surrounding continents is massive with so many different cultures and peoples and stories that could be explored. Making an original story within that would probably be so easy because there's so much to work with, yet instead, they chose just to rewrite the Second Age. If they wanted to tell a story with their own unique ideas, great; go do that, I genuinely think that's fine, but make it an original story within Middle Earth, and leave the actual events that Tolkien wrote as they are. That way, you don't have to work with these restrictions and you can do whatever you like, but that attitude doesn't work here. All it's done is upset the fans who were looking forward to seeing the work of Tolkien come alive again. Expand

This is exceptionally poor storytelling. One of many examples: Elrond and Durin enter a super high-stakes competition which will end in Elrond's banishment if he were to lose. Elrond loses, and literally 30 seconds later, the high stakes are gone, as Elrond gets what he wanted - a conversation with Durin.

Just take Galadriel's case: She is one of the oldest and wisest elves in Middle Earth, wife of Celeborn and mother with him of Celebrian (wife of Elrond and mother of Arwen). But now here in this "thing" she is a young and enraged warrior who has abandoned her family (not even mentioned in the show) in a revenge quest to kill a random troll in the far north in order to avenge her brother (died thousands of years before, while her other two brothers have been removed from their canon).

LOTR brought us chivalrous warriors, the struggle to be virtuous and brave against temptation and the lust for power, and an intricate fantasy world meant to stand in for Old England. In Middle Earth, life is simpler, its ok for men to be masculine, people are free and not constantly surveilled and micromanaged (the Eye of Sauron is nothing compared to the Mind-Rape of Zuckerberg), there are only two genders, and instead of working eight hour office jobs and getting nagged by HR, between going on adventures hobbits could enjoy a few pints in the shire while waiting until the crops needed harvesting. The Rings of Power instead gives us girl bosses, diversity hires, political correctness, and a rehash of stuff from LOTR looking to cynically mine our nostalgia so Amazon can collect some more super berries tax free because its incorporated in Bermuda. Sorry, the whole point of getting immersed into a fantasy world is to avoid all of those things. Well, as we can all see, pretty much nothing. When activists posing as actors started attacking fans for being racist/sexist/homophobic, to my friend’s disbelief, I was very encouraging of said attacks. In fact, I said they need to ramp it up even more. When my friends started to question my sanity, I calmly explained that people behind this show need to get as woke as possible for the simple reason. They don’t have anything else to save their lives from this disaster. No story, no characters, no foundation in the books because of just a couple of pages they have rights over. And because they had precious little, they decided to literally **** all over it.
Anarion, son of Elendil, brother of Isildur, founder of Minas Tirith and first king of Gondor alongside his brother? Nah, let’s gender swap him for some lady. Much better. Tar Miriel, only thing Tolkien ever wrote about her was that she was farer than silver or ivory or pearls. Easy layup, they just need to cast some pale Irish actress and let their minds go wild with limitless possibilities of her character? Nah, let’s race swap her for some black lady. Much better.
Galadriel is pretty much Elrond an Elrond is pretty much Galadriel. But Elrond kinda forgot that Galadriel is his mother-in-law and Galadriel kinda forgot that she’s married to Celeborn. But since Elrond has strong sexual minority vibe and Galadriel is a strong woman who needs no man, things are just as they need to be, I guess. Much better.
I can go on and on and on. This was just a failed attempt of bunch of radical leftists trying to adapt work of their mortal enemy; old white man who was devoted Catholic. Trying to push their narrative and agenda through something, that’s in its core, completely opposite of their values and norms.
Can’t be done. Shouldn’t have been done.

    - elrond e gil galad fracotes.

The scenery and CGI are very good and the Middle Earth setting is interesting with great source material to draw from so the problem lies with the script writers and people in charge of the show. I have heard that filming of season 2 has been delayed, so Amazon could correct their mistakes. I would suggest they need to sack the writers and the main showrunners and bring in a new team to make major revisions. Its not the source material, its not the budget, its the team developing the show that are the problem.

Gil-galad and Durin were just believable as characters insde tolkien's world. The rest is just bad. The story doesn't have anything to do with anything that Tolkien wrote, apart from some familiar names. The first two episodes fail at delivering any sort of memorable scene. The pacing is off, almost nothing of real importance happens. The plot has its main character, their version of Galadriel, out on a quest that leads her nowhere during the first two hours of this so far. Then there's the dialogue. Poorly written, mediocre at best only thanks to a couple of talented actors. They try to embellish dialogue lines with big and profound sounding words, to say nothing of the sort. It tries to be clever way too hard, and fails its attempts at it. Natural conversation is nowhere to be found, instead we get a dull exchange of cliche lines we've heard and read in any school play. The romance between two of the characters seem to be written with every cliche imaginable, almost making it a parody of itself. But the show takes that seriously, and repeatedly uses tropes of the genre when no narrative resources were available to the writers. They couldn't get to write Galadriel as an intelligent character, so everyone else around her is dumbed down. The writers lack so much talent, that the only way they have to achieve this is by Galadriel's intuition, wich must be pretty strong since she conveys exposition about events way in the past with great detail as dialogue with other characters. Just lazy. The acting is also lacking. None seem to be able portray their characters emotions without looking like a caricature of themselves.
At the end of this, even if you forget that this show has anything to with Tolkien's legendary, the show itself doesn't hold up at all. Sure some visuals are beautiful, but the writers lack any talent required to manage this task on their hands. And it shows.

But I have to tell you.
Rings of Power is hurting my head!
It has that annoying modern thing of the camera constantly wobbling and tilting and moving while constantly zooming in on tight shots that show you NOTHING. I feel sick. This alone is going to prevent me from watching too much longer.
They've butchered basic law and facts of Tolkien's world and my God it's cheesy.
There is constant "it was a time"...type voiceovers with booming dramatic music not in keeping with what is occurring on the screen, i.e. Tragic battle music and all the elves are doing is walking over a sunlit field.
This show is what you'd get if you hired a sixth form acting troupe and gave them unlimited budget.
The problems here are those that afflict most modern entertainment. Everyone knows the skills, but they can only copy. They've been taught all the film making skills and techniques so they use ALL of them, all at once but they don't have the heart to know HOW to use them and when each technique is appropriate.
They know the ingredient's that go into a story but not how to weave them into a compelling emotional plot so they just chuck in all the plot ingredients.
In short, there is a lack of heart or imagination in modern film and TV making. Obsessed with metrics and formulas they can only attempt to recreate other people's passions... without the passion. It always fails and has done again.

Talented and personable cast of actors are often jarringly miscast and given script that emulates the tone of LotR trilogy on the surface albeit with significant errors, foregoing Tolkien’s original intent to disperse a frenzy of token messaging at the cost of coherence and enjoyment. Beautiful art direction, lovely sets and costumes are powerless to salvage it, as the intent and thus the spirit of Tolkien’s writing is entirely absent in lieu of jarring story and character choices in rapid-fire succession, making a mockery of the actual meaningful messaging in the actual lore. Showrunner and even director expemplify fundamental lack of understanding of what this world is about. The end result is the most expensive cheap show of all time that despite the artistry and love put into its production cannot overcome the shortcomings of its storytelling which in its absolute disregard for its audience manage to make the problematic Hobbit trilogy appear like Lawrence of Arabia. The end result is a show that is very uncaptivating despite its often stunning visuals.

Amazon has vandalized Tolkien's legacy with this show. The familiar characters have been completely perverted from how Tolkien wrote them and too many are insufferable to watch. Where is Tolkien's beautiful dialogue and heroic figures that have inspired generations around the world? There are so many departures from the source material that it does not even merit the title "Lord of the Rings." This show should not qualify as an "adaptation" nor even be considered "inspired by J. R. R. Tolkien." The writing is plagued with continuity problems, a lack of even a basic, let alone satisfying, hero's journey, shallow, and dare I say broken, morality, low stakes, lacking payoffs, poor drama, an odd tone, ridiculous action scenes, plot holes with plot armor for certain characters you are told to like or else, mountains of laughable retcons, entirely made-up characters, which the original source was not lacking in, and absolutely horrific dialogue. It is downright insulting. For how much money was spent, somehow the production still appears tacky, cheap, and corny. How could this happen? Little thought was put into the costumes and make-up, minor details that are distinctly Tolkien were overlooked, it is lacking in practical scenery and effects, and the environment feels like an entirely artificial realm with fake landscapes and scenery created by a computer-definitely not the enchanting world of Middle Earth. This show substitutes heart and heroics for disdain and lecture, scolding the darkness in humanity rather than guiding us to the light and teaching us the value of sacrifice and selflessness. With all the gaping flaws of this show, Amazon tried to gloss this soulless monstrosity with a shiny layer of CGI, and it sticks out painfully like a sore eye instead of a lasting impression on the mind's eye. The pacing is disjointed, the editing is choppy, and the score is off-putting. The audience is not transported to Middle Earth when watching and listening to this spectacle, rather taken out of it entirely. My mood while viewing went from utter shock, to frustration, to disappointment, to indifference, to the final twin blows of boredom and apathy. Anything distinct and authentic are replaced by the generic and superficial. It is obvious the producers of this show merely want to syphon money from the worldwide fanbase, shove its agenda on audiences, and pander to folks in the most disrespectful, dishonest, disingenuous, and degrading way. To which I respond with a bold, "Do not watch." Dare I say unsubscribe for such offenses too? I would personally. This show was created to sucker and shame people, a complete farce propped up by abysmal marketing that exhausts viewers to "watch it or else!" and threatens potential viewers "do not dare criticize!" while shamelessly destroying the legacy of the most beloved fantasy series in the world. How was this allowed to be made! Is there no end to the lies promoting and protecting this show? Stop trying to sell us a broken product. We are not buying this Hollywood slop. Disregard with every fiber of your being the shillery celebrating, promoting, and defending Amazon Studios' The Rings of Power. The Middle Earth we love and know may very well be lost otherwise for future generations. If you've read this far I would simply conclude: Read the books instead!

With war brewing and the forging of the rings seemingly still far off, the first half of The Rings of Power’s first season constitutes little more than stage-setting for the struggle to come. Given the lack of quests and central commanding figures, it often makes for less-than-gripping drama. However, given that there are four more seasons already planned, and potentially dozens of new characters to be introduced, the slow and throat-clearing build is possibly a good sign.
