well ... everything is already said.. i can't believe how they could choose this cast and write this **** i think there is a very big issue in amazon headquarters... every project, games or tv shows, are always catastrophes. only good to enslave their workers i guess

Honestly the cringiest dialog and acting I have seen in a long time! Feels like a B-movie when it comes to casting, but has beautiful CGI.

Story? I don't know. 2 episodes in and it just "forbidden love story" and "Who is the bad guy?" absolutely horrific.

I gave it a shot, tried to watch it like a new unknown Fantasy series, but no. I'm done! AWFUL!

I have a deep hatred of how disrespectful this team has been to those who simply genuinely love the source material, just this arrogant flippant idea they are going to improve the source material and make it more relevant today by modernizing it. I repeat, the way Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, and so forth, do not need to be modernized because they are written to be timeless. I repeat, the way Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, and so forth, do not need to be modernized because they are written to be timeless. To say this even simpler, if you make a period piece it's jarring to shoehorn modern ideas into it because anyone who knows that ancient culture will be brought out of the suspension of disbelief. I could not be more disappointed, and for the record, my personal complaints have zero to do with diversity casting, it has to do with a shameless disregard for source material and a general hostility to those who do. Remember, Lord of the Rings was considered for ages an un-filmable series of books. Even Tolkien was against it, to be fair. Regardless, Peter Jackson did an admirable job, and was asked to give notes on this series, was sent a pilot script, sent notes, and in his own words, was ghosted. Pure hubris and the only answer I can conceive of is, Pride! Expand

Here's the deal, plain and simple: people DO NOT LIKE what is being made, how it's being handled, and many do not want this product in the first place. Tolkien is Tolkien and can't be franchised in the same way Star Wars or Marvel have because it's the life work of one man who has long since passed away. People want Tolkien and like what he made. JD Payne and Patrick McKay along with corporate executives, producers, shareholders, and modern writers making up things and attaching them to purchased names is not Tolkien. They can buy rights but they can't buy love or acceptance from the public at large. I for one am not liking any of what I've seen so far. Expand

Technically it's great, but story-wise it's embarrassing, they should have spent a little more on an experienced scriptwriter.

this is below a fanfic, it's a shame so much lost potential.
It is so easy to do something good even with Tolkien's appendices, but to many experts the correct prediction, the screenwriters fall short of the grandeur of the professor's work.

My first metacritic review: first read LOTR in 70's. I have read some of the reviews here of RoP, many negative. First my take then a general remark.
My take: visuals are excellent, writing is poor. OK that it starts slow as long as some coherent narrative emerges with character-driven plots and journeys. If the dialogs don't improve I might lose interest. This was sub-par writing.

Remark: the same sort of sub-par writing that happened with Jackson films which started off great in #1 (because they largely kept to the book), worse in #2 and worst in #3 during which latter they hardly kept to the original dialogues at all. I don't mind that film-makers need to make changes but when they do so and the result is uniformly much worse than the original, it shows the film-makers don't have a good feel for the original. For me the Jackson Trilogy was more bad than good. They didn't convey the evil of the Nazgul, nor the fear they generated, not even close. Aragorn rarely manifest any royal or kingly presence, most of the time he was unempt, unwashed, dirty-looking. That said, Gollum was maybe better than in the book and many scenes in the film and much of the acting was excellent. Just a lot of flaws and unnecessary rotten dialog.

This Rings of Power is like moving on from where Jackson's poor dialog and editing left off. I fear the story is not going to have a core. Part of the appeal of LOTR is not just the fantasy aspect but that it depicts a world that is different from our modern world, a world with more depth and integrity shown both by the good and evil characters. It rings true somehow. The young screenwriters (much like with Game of Thrones final seasons) do not understand the depth and wisdom in the original work and continually undermined it it in LOTR and since here they are making up most of the scenes with character and dialogue, and given how the first two episodes went, I suspect they are not up to it.

The music, costumes and settings were great. It's going to be worth watching. But they will have paid far too much for something whose writing is far too shallow.

In simple words, this is so far from Tolkien's original works, that it becomes painful to watch.
This isnt helped by the shows slow pace, horrible dialogue and unlikable characters, for which I believe comes from the back scripts and directing, more than the actors abilities.

It seeks to destroy Tolkien's magnificent novel Universe, but if you really are a gatekeeper for the great old books and Peter Jackson's legendary trilogy, the Amazon series won't put a dent into it, no matter how hard they try. By all means watch it, but you'll only watch it once never to return to this cheap looking expensive paid tv show. I'll say this, it does show me that TLOTR was meant to be a filmic experience on the big screen and not a weekly small screen affair - doesn't work even if it attempts to ape Game of Thrones, that started on the small screen and the world has had over a decade to get use to that show even if it was filmed cinematic for large screen battles. Visually it is beautiful but it does not seem that they have spent more money than in Game of Thrones, but much much less. Maybe in future episodes we'll see that billion dollars they've spent.
As for the story, it seems that it is not the original of the books but rather it is a story invented by them. This does not matter to me if the series is good and entertains me, but it is not the case because the simple concepts are explained ad nauseam, but the complicated concepts are never explained.
At the end of the day it is a boring and soulless series. A missed opportunity to do something great, down the drain.

It’s awful the dialogue alone makes it unwatchable. As for the main character Galadriel well the acting is wooden and what’s an high elf sorceress with (almost goddess like magical powers doing running round in armour and killing trolls with a knife when 10 male elves also in armour can’t kill it with bows and swords? Oh Galadriel jumps off a boat and tries to swim back to Middle Earth like that swimming New York to Liverpool? Did I mention she’s a powerful sorceress Why are all the halflings dirty? Why is there a female dwarf without a beard (On race she’s a dwarf I don’t care about her colour). Don’t remember anything about elves with human single mums as girlfriends in any of the books. After saying all this it’s taken 20 hours to watch 2 episodes because I kept falling asleep it’s that boring. No story, no likeable characters just tragically bad. Expand

The aesthetics of the elves are horrible, sorry- , No long hair, nothing, really nothing noble, nowhere close to how they were described. I feel like the elves are not fitting and not worthy of tolkien AT ALL. Besides that theyre all written like normal humans.

Especially Kelebrimbor looks freakin horrible (while he should be still younger than Galadriel!)

What is this fighting scene against the snowtroll? That move from galadriel, was like straight out of an indian action movie.

Why Galadriel can swim from Valinor back to middle earth? This is really such a rubbish scene and close to got season 8.
Why she can be saved from underwater and they swim back to a non moving raft in the middle of a storm?

The Harfoots - whyyy are they inside this series? Really the most uninteresting plot and not even existing in tolkins lore.

So all in all besides the visuals a huge disappointment. Its not enough to just throw money at such a beloved franchise!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The changes to Galadriel and Elrond are a perversion of Tolkien!  Galadriel is a Mary Sue in every sense of the term.  She is the best at everything, no weaknesses, smarter than everyone around her and stronger than any man.  This "Warrior Galadriel" is a complete joke and totally unlikeable.  It took the entire Fellowship to take down the cave troll in the Mines of Moria and she takes down a snow troll singlehandily, Matrix Style in seconds.  Gandalf, Aragorn, Gimli, Boromir, Legolas and all the hobbits barely took down the cave troll.  Elrond is now a scholar and a politician and a Cuck as well.  Tolkien wrote The Lord of the Rings to create a mythology for England because most of England's mythology was lost due to all the times they were conquered.  It makes no sense for such a diverse casting set in this region and time frame.  And seeing it completely pulls you out of the story.  Tolkien was pretty damn specific when he described all the different races.  If you put some white guys in Wakanda tribes in Black Panther most people would be in a uproar.  Not to mention it would be absolutely ridiculous!  If this was a newly created fantasy show with no connection to Tolkien then I think most people wouldn't have a problem with it, but calling this The Lord of the Rings in the title is where Amazon is pissing off Tolkien fans.  Attacking us as "Toxic Fandom" is getting so old and played out.  "Evil cannot create anything new, they can only corrupt and ruin good forces have invented or made” Expand

    Summary: Fundamentally broken and irredeemable.

In terms of the storytelling structure, it's a kiddie version of Game of Thrones jammed into middle-earth and it absolutely does not work. The structure, tone and style is completely different from the stories Tolkien wrote and doesn't mesh properly with the world he created. Besides this, I feel to take the mans work, the amazing and beautiful world he created and simply use it like any old vehicle to tell your own story is just so disrespectful, perhaps even immoral. There really is nothing of any value or substance to review here, it's empty and meaningless and not worth watching.

Because the show is built on these rotten foundations, the high production value does not matter at all, none of the music, none of the expensive cgi, props or costumes, none of it matters. It's all just meaningless fluff trying to cover up a horror.

How Amazon managed to spend a billion dollars to make something totally worthless, I will never know. It's an abomination that should never have been made. If I could rate it -10, I would.

    3. Elf africain/d'Harad lointaine.

Then you might wonder how wise it is to pay a lot of money for the rights and then remake it too much. There is often a reason why a book is good, take it away and the point is lost. Watched the episodes on an 85" TV with a Dolby Atmos system.

    Really good:
Photography and CGI, it's mostly really, really good. Sure there are scenes that could be better, but it was never so bad that I was put out of the mood.

    Ok but not bad:
The music, ok but doesn't take advantage of the 7.1 system, barely 2.1 if you're going to be picky.. But nothing I was bothered by like the music in the trailer.

    Bad:
The dialogue is downright bad. Feels like it was written by theatre students. The way the Elves talk feels absurdly stilted, could be in an amateur theatre in a Shakespearean play.

Maybe nothing wrong with the pacing, I like "slow" stories, but it was unengaging... Several times I fast-forwarded, and that's not a good rating.

But then there's the issue... casting/diversity... Sorry, but it doesn't work for me. The problem isn't that there are dark actors in the show, but how they exist. The issue becomes hard for everyone to understand and even talk about, Racist vs. Leftist... If the show had made some effort and wanted to include dark actors, they could find a way to make it natural. Like there's a dark race/group/harfoots coming from "the lands beyond the desert" or similar who are running from evil, or something like that. Or make all the harfoots black... I'd buy that too... Took me about 1 second to come up with the set up that would make it make sense.

But as far as I know, most breed in the normal way, and normal biological laws apply, i.e. black parents = black children. So it's more incredible that there is diversity of appearance in a small group than that there would be dragons in reality. The above does not make anyone racist, but provides a simple explanation for why different groups have different appearances.

he alternative is to completely ignore biology and assume that children's appearance is randomized at birth, which would also be ok if the show gave that as an explanation...

If you are going to devote 50 hours to the series, if diversity is so important, you could have spent a few minutes on a better presentation that would probably have removed 95% of the criticism of diversity. In other words, give an explanation and make it credible. Rating: 3 out of 10 , will not continue watching. Doesn't feel engaging enough.

Some beautiful landscape and scene pictures and the music is really nice, but after the first two episodes there is a big feeling of disappointment. The characters are weak portrayed, the dialogues are abysmal and pseudo-intellectual, not a glance of the beauty of language from Tolkiens works is in this show. Up until now, the plot is just shockingly dull.

I used to giving this show 0 points now after watching 3 episodes I'm starting to like or at least tolerate southern elves and numenor visuals. I try stay positive so i give "2" because I care more about plot as nice visuals and CGI. Episodes are still too long and quite boring after half an hour. OF course I dont try see it as Tolkiens adaptation only random fantasy show with catchy names.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First I will mention the good parts so far opening scène where we can see sauron etc that looked tolkien to me. Music is another thing this series does well just not as good as the LOTR trilogy but better then expected. Also scenery looks nice and I liked the actor that plays Durin the 4th. Now onto the bad part which is all the other stuff. Galadriel is not a likeable character and does really dumb stuff in this series. She is also super strong for some reason which asks the question why does she even need a team. The story is just bland and boring. I really had trouble watching the first episode without falling asleep, second episode was a bit better in my opinion. The dialogue is horrendous and they all speak with a weird accent for some reason. Most of the characters are just boring and forgettable. The harfoots don't belong in this world and you can tell its almost like they came from some other fantasy show. There are also some really questionable scènes in this like elrond and celebrimbor travelling a huge distance only to leave celebrimbor behind so he can travel back like what?? And this is only my problem with the show on itself and I'm probably forgetting some stuff. Besides this it doesnt feel tolkien and just feels generic fantasy. They also butchered the Lore but that was expected if you only have the rights to so little. To be honest I didn't expected this show to be this bad. So much Money was spent to make this and all I can say is wow what a borefest. The acting also feel lifeless. I really have no clue what happened here but for a show this expensive this is outracious. Expand

If Amazon did one thing right, it's spliting Tolkien fanbase in half.
I was so angered, more and more after each trailer by them trying to forcefully push their agenda through the show. I was determined not to watch it, not to spoil the amazing world but I talked myself into checking it out. Im glad I did, so I can actually give a proper reviev but I hate myself for spoiling the world to my eyes and memory...

This is not the Middle-Earth we wanted...

The camera was good, outside combat. During combat, it was really chaotic with too much cuts. The music is quite decent but doesn't really stand out. (The music during dwarf scenes was, on the contrary, really terrible, childish, like in some fairy tale, not epic fantasy world..), the scenery during harfoot scenes is nice..

Some actors acting was good, like Halbarand, Celebrimbor, the giant, the innkeeper, even Elrond occasionaly but it was mostly bellow avarage. I was especially disappointed by Gil-Gallad, Arondir and mainly by Galadriel herself. Her lack of expression, be it either facial or gestures, is big. She is like a robot, programmed to say what what was given to her. Overall, too much time spent on boring scenes like eating snails, while moments of interest are short or left out completely...

The clothing was all wierd and wrong. Galadriel's light shirt on ocean was fine but her armor was too much. Galad's gold was too much, arondir's armor was too much. Harfoot clothing was decent, even though I have no idea why they had to make gipsies out of them...

Dwarves are just one big NO. Music was childish, they made them swing from side to side when walking and look all dirty and homeless..

Clothing was my third biggest concern proved right...

Ny second biggest concern was, as said, their agenda. I love me some good actors of colour and I was kinda fine by them placing them among humans but mixing them even into dwarves and elves was another big NO. Thats not how they are portrayed anywhere and if they thought they can get through with it under such famous and loved LotR logo, no. No one seems to learn from the dislikes and by destroying one franchise after another by these choices...

But my first and biggest concern was the amount of CGI. In the trailers, every second shot was made of pc effects and it is the same with the show... even though they look mostly great, they are still CGI. The hobbit was denounced by the fanbase because of it yet they did not care and threw the effects into every second location... pc effects should be used when creating things that cant be get by normal means like dragons or a meteor shower but no make your whole world built on it..
Smaller details like elves with no long hair, really fast pace without giving people much time to sink something in and the ever present oversaturation dont help either...

I watched the first two episodes, sadly, and I wont be watching anymore, nothing in there cought my eye to go on...

Also, I do not like Galadriel's actor but thats just my personal feeling. And if you are annoyed every time the main character walks into the scenes, there isnt much else to really enjoy

At least that would explain why both the writing and acting are what one would expect from a middle school drama club which lacks funding, guidance and motivation.
Therefore, the audiovisual quality of the show stands out almost like a beacon of hope in contrast to the writing and acting. Neither of those potentially positive aspects of this show however are groundbreaking or even anything that could be considered special. The quality itself is good, but unfortunately it is also generic to the point where it could be from any fantasy film with a decent budget from the last ten years.
From the trailers I have expected this to potentially be a decent show when taken out of the Tolkien universe. But unfortunately, even that seems to have been too high of an expectation. The plot points are mostly contrived and nonsensical, the dialogue reminds one of what is expected from a teenager who believes himself much more intellectual than he truly is. Sounding "deep" is of more importance than actually communicating anything of substance, while also failing at the former in a hilarious twist.
The at times overwhelming dissonance between what is shown and what is told means that even if there was no original lore that is being blatantly ignored, it would still be a complete failure.

expensive and pretty CGI which makes it look fake. Absolutely horribly written characters. without LOTR name could be a 4/5 fan film. Amazon has sullied Tolkien's and even Jacksons good name.

the Washington Post which is owned by Jeff Bezos gave this show a 4 out of 10. Dont believe me go see critics and scroll down.

This show is atrocious and disrespectful to Tolkein's work. Good news is they likely saved money by filming the hobbits scenes in San Francisco's tent city and Seattle's CHAZ.

Adar’s début drips with signifiers. ... When Adar informs Arondir in Episode 4 that he has been told many lies, some that “run so deep even the rocks and roads now believe them,” it is still a thrill. Tolkien succeeded in creating a mythic world, one that has now grown vast enough through acts of typological repetition and imitation to conquer television, too.

With war brewing and the forging of the rings seemingly still far off, the first half of The Rings of Power’s first season constitutes little more than stage-setting for the struggle to come. Given the lack of quests and central commanding figures, it often makes for less-than-gripping drama. However, given that there are four more seasons already planned, and potentially dozens of new characters to be introduced, the slow and throat-clearing build is possibly a good sign.

The Rings of Power is a reminder of what drew many of us to epic fantasy in the first place: wonder. ... This series set in an ancient realm displays one dazzling and painterly landscape after another. Power also doesn't skimp on action. [12 - 25 Sep 2022, p.10]
