Review only applies to the first episode as I haven’t seen the second yet.

So far, this is a disaster. CGI is mostly good, with some very impressive landscape shots which I expect will get re-used as the season goes on. Casting is a mixed bag, but it hardly matters because the show seems to do its level best to prevent the audience from giving a single sh*t about any of its characters.

So far, this is a disaster. CGI is mostly good, with some very impressive landscape shots which I expect will get re-used as the season goes on. Casting is a mixed bag, but it hardly matters because the show seems to do its level best to prevent the audience from giving a single sh*t about any of its characters. The pacing is atrocious, and destroys any hope of getting any sort of handle on the stakes. Too little time is spent on character-establishing scenes, and way too much of the audience’s time is wasted on inconsequential “remember this guy from the books?” nostalgia introductions that backfire immediately because of odd casting decisions and introducing new characters with little to no context to them.

Why they insisted on front-loading their story by dumping all these nobodies on screen all at once is anyone’s guess, but it completely destroyed any investment I might have had in wanting to learn more. Galadriel’s character assassination is so complete that the only scene where she displays any sort of personality trait beyond “revenge-obsessed stubbornness” is unearned, because it relies on a relationship that happened off-screen, several hundred years before the events of the show.

In short, whoever approved this screenplay likely doomed the show for a lot of folks. People are saying that episode 2 isn’t quite as horrendous, but now it’s feeling like a chore to have to sit back with this mess.

It’s not a zero, obviously. A lot of painstaking work went into the effects and the sets. But when you have artists carefully sculpting fake wood statues that are then used as elven mausoleums carved into LIVING TREES, you know you just ruined all that work because it’s all pointless.

    This isn’t Tolkien.

Edit: My score hasn't changed after watching episode 02 and I don't think I'll continue.

Edit 2: I lowered it because it keeps getting stupider.

Not sure what this is but is isn't LOTR. With the money involved Amazon should have created it's own brand new fantasy series. Obvious money grab riding on the coattails of Peter Jackson's excellent epics and the LOTR books. Dull all around. Dull acting. Dull music. Dull writing. Dull choreography.

If I'd try to be short I'd say - 'do not waste your time!'. But such a sharp opinion requires some details, indeed.

Let's be it. First of all: The storytelling is dull and chaotic. I.e., Gal is going to North 'several years', at least, - but returning from there by 'one moment' and nothing is in between. Oops! Acting and dialogues are rough, pathetic and without any meaning.

First of all: The storytelling is dull and chaotic. I.e., Gal is going to North 'several years', at least, - but returning from there by 'one moment' and nothing is in between. Oops!

Acting and dialogues are rough, pathetic and without any meaning. Fighting cruel elvish children? Mutiny in elvish team? Gal, jumping from the ship and swimming back from the Far West gates and Light of Valinor? Are you kidding?

Women as the 'acting force'... Let me not to explain that it cannot be in THAT world. It ruins one of milestones of story. Rare 'women with sword' in LOTR are just forced to take this role - and they hate it. Here we have, at least, three of them in a first episode at once. And they LOVE it.

Then, again - I presume, creators do not know what is the 'race' word meaning. They ruined races of elves, dwarves and even those we call 'hobbits' to the 'modern requirements' (you know what I mean).

What a saga without good fight? Here's some, in the first episode. And it looks ugly - i.e. troll ruins FIVE elves, but fiercy Gal is coming, camera shows 'zig-zag-zag', and boom! - troll is dead. Game over. Another one is epic fight between elves and orcs, and I don't even want to discuss about this. It's just a one big mess.

Elves are perfect, we all know. But not here. Old elves. Ugly elves. Muscular elves. The only thing you can recognize the elf is his ear.

I don't even want to remark about 'gipsy hobbits' or 'middle age men' (hey - it's Middle-Earth, not middle-age!). Full picture is total waste.

I watched only first episode. I want to see body-positive dwarves - and then I'll drop the show to trashcan. Sorry, Professor! - and I'm glad you don't see it.

This lack of danger, makes the character feel souless, I couldn't care less about Galadriel drowning.

In the Men plot: elves doing guard for 70+ couldn't have any intel about the burned village in less than a day of travel. Harfoots plot: a meteor crash very near, but none except Nori will go to look. And so on. Dialog and action are so low standard, I couldn't believe how toothless, emotionless, and tiresome this thing is.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I wanted to give this show a fair chance, but holy Hobbit, what a mess!

Where to start? Elves whose hairstyles are reminiscent of a poorly made Pop music video from the 80s and for whom actors have been cast who don't look like immortals at all. Plus: A one-dimensional main character who, miles away from the shores of Middle-earth, goes for a swim in the biggest plot hole since the penultimate episode of the final season of Game of Thones - and who, thousands of years later, still behaves like a defiant child whose self-made paper ship has just been sunk. For whom nothing is at stake at any time, because this very special elf is able to kill a troll in 30 seconds, which took Legolas and the Fellowship almost ten minutes in the mines of Moria. Infantile harfoots, whose scenes are sometimes reminiscent of a sitcom from the 50s, but where you wait in vain for the laughter to fade in in the background. And when two elves, without provisions, without horses and above all - without any presentable delegation, walk miles to get an audience with a dwarf prince, only for one of them (who, by the way, is the most important blacksmith in Middle-earth) to be allowed to make the long, arduous journey back...then, dear viewer you truly wonder whether this Is High Fantasy or a Brigand's Tale.

Fortunately, it turns out that the diverse cast, which some "so-called trolls" have questioned in advance, cannot and will not have any influence at all on this review. How could it, given that we live in an age in which heated discussions are justifiably triggered when historical or fictional films are not cast with appropriately ethnically correct leading actors because people want to renounce the "white-whashing" of times past. It is anything but politically correct and respectful to miscast, for example, Scarlett Johannson in the live-action adaptation of the Japanese anime masterpiece "Ghost in the Shell" or John Wayne as Genghis Khan. Who would think of casting Disney's live-action adaptation of Mulan with Caucasian actors, like in "Breakfast at Tiffany's"? And just to make it absolutely clear: I think that's a good thing! But why do the opposite here? Especially when you know in advance that the majority of Tolkien fans seem to worship all his works as "history" with almost religious zeal.

Leaving aside the pointlessness of such a discussion: not everyone will have the opportunity to see the first two episodes in the cinema on a big screen, so that at least some of the really great images can unfold their effect. And this despite the fact that the CGI effects are unfortunately clearly perceived as such and some things look like ultra-graphic settings in a computer game. But if, like most people, you can only watch the whole thing on a normal TV, then the sheer glamour of this big visually blown-up nothingness fades very quickly and you concentrate on what really makes a good TV series: A compelling script with main characters that you can and want to sympathise with. Unfortunately, the vast majority here is reduced to a moderately written soap opera full of clichés. And no - I don't expect the quality of the whole thing to improve significantly, at least not in the first season, but I sincerely hope for a more differentiated development of the main protagonists in the future - especially that of a certain person.

In the end, all that remains for me is the realisation that this is probably more of a retelling of the fairy tale "The Emperor's New Clothes". Only this time, the majority of critics praise the sheer finesse and epic grandeur of the "outfit", whereas the majority of hardcore fans will put it more honestly:

"The emperor isn't wearing anything at all!"

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This series could have been the most epic fantasy story ever told but it's not.

Loosely based on the works of JRR Tolkien, a 3,500 year age has been compressed to a few years, with characters new and old that would never have crossed paths and some that are completely different. The story is not Tolkiens original work. Galadriel, the second most powerful elf only to Feanor, who is now portrayed as a warrior with all the toxic masculine attributes you don't want to see is on a random mission with "looks can be deceiving" Sauron. Elrond is playing a role he never was, traveling several hundreds of miles with no provisions or support except for Celebrimbor who he then turns back once reaching his destination. None of the factions make sense with mixed ethnicities in supposedly close nit off the map tribes who have hidden from the world for a thousand years. The elves don't look like elves, they're not tall or fair but short haired, mixed racial, human looking that you'd only recognise when they focus on the slightly pointed ears. For a fan, it's not Tolkien, for a casual viewer you're left with huge holes, no context, characters you dislike immediately and a very slow progression that's frankly pointless detours.

The acting/actors, script, delivery, direction, score, backdrops, graphics/cgi - you honestly think they were all perfect.

    Now let us remind ourselves of the 10 movies commonly considered the best of all time;

    1. Shawshank Redemption - 9.3
    2 The Godfather - 9.2

These are all timeless classics. You'll notice that they are all original and that no-one has copied, reimagined, imitated or otherwise bastardized any of them. (I mean, who would dare?).

So in summary, by giving the aforementioned faecal matter a 10, you are suggesting said faeces is better than all of these works of art.

Well, your opinion is your opinion and you’re entitled to it.

For my part, I now know your level of standards – and they are waaaaaay below mine!

You have everything bad about modern filmmaking from the forced politics to the over use of bad CGI crammed into a stinking pile of poo. For so much money thrown at it, it looks cheap, the costumes look cheap, the sets look cheap, I could easily spot the points where the real set clashes with greenscreen. None of the characters are interesting, nothing really happens. This is not LOTR, its complete fiction and directly contradicts the lore. The hobbits are in a whole league of their own and completely laughable. The plot is utterly boring, its a snoozefest, nothing really happens. Actors are shot at bad angles, you have unflattering closeups, and the infamous Galadriel horse riding scene. Truly a masterful work...of utter tragedy that would make Rian Johnson blush. As for the 'woke' controversy/diverse casting, it's... whatever. As a Tolkien fan, I don't exactly like the lore being trodden on, but if it was done well and resulted in a decent show then whatever, can overlook it. Unfortunately, it misses everything it aims for. It's not an outright disaster, but it's bland, mediocre. Dull. And in many ways that's even worse, as this isn't even in the 'so bad it's good' category to become a cult hit.

It's going to do well short term, as people will be intrigued by the budget and expecting a lot given it's Lord of the Rings. But this is LOTR in name only, and I expect people to tune out very quickly.

Setting aside the books, ignoring all the negativity leading up to this, forgetting the existence of the two trilogies, and attempting to be as objective as possible, this series is still a massive failure on several metrics.

The largest and most glaring problem is that it is boring.

There is nothing special about this show, there are no characters to emotionally invest in, and the construction of the storyline borders on the incoherent.
It is clear after mere minutes, that the individuals entrusted with this project lacked the skill and maturity needed to realize a meaningful adaptation of Tolkien's work.

Bezos has a lot of reasons to be angry about this slowly unfolding disaster and some his ire should be turned inward, as he has admitted to not asserting his own vision for the series.
However, the thing I would be most enraged about, if I were him, is the production value he got for his money.

Despite years of technological advances and a gargantuan budget, the aesthetic of The Ring of Power comes across as a sad attempt to copy Peter Jackson's art direction.

Consequently, while a visually intricate film, you do not see the full investment made into creating this show up on the screen.

Alas, while you can explore The Rings of Power apart from Tolkien in theory, the reality is it has to be considered in that context at some point.
The unfortunate truth is this is so far removed from the source material that devoted fan have a myriad of valid reason to be angry about it.

This series sincerely is an exceptionally offensive abuse of the rights Amazon purchased from the Tolkien estate.
The writers, directors, and actors appear to think their task was to "fix" Tolkien.
Considering he is one of the most successful authors in all of human history, that kind of hubris was doomed to fail and so it has... spectacularly.
It therefore makes perfect sense that those who have profound love for the lore are going to genuinely hate this; realistically, how could they not?

Is this the worst show ever made? No.
    Is it entertaining?
    No.
What the Rings of Power actually is is an abysmally bad translation of Tolkien, developed by individuals whose egos apparently vastly outstrip their talents.
Making matter much worse, they squandered a record setting budget creating an aesthetically pleasing cure for insomnia.

Sadly the negatives greatly outweigh the positives. Galadriel's character is a bit too heroic and almost feels like Indiana Jones. However, I expect her to change throughout the show as her character develops.

However, the real deal breaker for me is the blatant and obtrusive allegory. Particularly the historic relationship between elves and humans being compared to whites and blacks in the USA. Some of the dialogue is so on the nose that I physically cringed while watching the show.

Before anyone claims what I'm saying is racist please understand. I believe it is incredibly important to educate people about slavery in the USA and for them to understand that the impact of that era can still be felt today. However, this type of messaging has absolutely no place in LoTR and is a disgrace to Tolkien in my opinion.

Visually it looks very expensive and is rich in color and light effects, but poor in actual cinematography and camera work - again they just followed a manual. Somehow they managed to make it look fancy and fake at the same time, cgi can't replicate all the tiny little imperfections and details and random texture of real life - and this show uses a LOT of cgi. Enough has already been said about the often embarrassing dialogue, by-the-numbers screenplay and general story that deviates completely from the source material. Half of the characters are pure fanfiction with mostly pointless and unimportant subplots which the show tries to make seem important and is all the worse for it, 'filler' is a drastic word to use but it seems appropriate here. One of my biggest problems is the language, or rather lack thereof; it's just plain straight-up modern day english. Where is the elevated old-english language that Tolkien wrote so beautifully? And why do they pronounce elvish+adunaic names and places in the most forced and unnatural way possible? It sounds like they practiced to make it sound practiced, especially the actor of Galadriel. The total dumbing down of the language is the biggest reason why this show feels empty to me, and in combination with soap opera-level acting it compounds that even further. TRoP largely feels fake and empty, because there is no true inspiration or artistic vision behind it. It is just very expensive confetti, that spits in the face of arguably the most loved and revered work of fantasy that has ever been created, and that is why I give this show a rating of 2/10. Expand

Thought the writing acting and overall pace was very poor. Plus the characters are just not very convincing

No vale ni como salva pantallas. Actores malos. Guión malo. Coincidencias con Tolkien son pura coincidencia. Cgi 5 min bien luego aburre igual que los diálogos hechos para gente de 7 años. El sonido se hace pesado

Honestly tho. Let them waste all those millions on this show. I simply don't understand the delusional logic of just using an established title, which mostly only appeal to passionate fans who don't like changes to well established lore.

Reeeally should've taken a page out of Peter Jackson's book and made a show true to Tolkien not true to whatever whims blowing through Hollywood at the moment.

As a fan of both Tolkien and the fantasy genre I wanted to give an honest opinion of the Rings of Power. I really wanted to like this show but I have to say this show is truly awful in every aspect.
Dialogue – Whoever wrote the script for this show should never be allowed to write a script again. It was cringeworthy, amateurish and so bad and clichéd that it resembled something a school child would have written. I cannot believe that someone proof read this and thought it was good enough to use in a billion-dollar production. It was reminiscent of a bad Dungeons and Dragons game. Acting – Did they actually have auditions for this show, or did they go to the nearest amateur dramatic society. The acting in this show is subpar, wooden and I’ve honestly seen better acting from school productions. The delivery of lines is clumsy, awkward and unbelievable and dispels any reality they’re trying to create.
CGI – In places it was ok but in other scenes it was awful. Decent background visuals don’t make a decent show.
Politics – One thing that is certain to kill a show is the inclusion of identity politics. Personally, I want a show that allows me to escape the real world for awhile but I guess we now live in a world where amateurish activists make shows/movies and don’t care what works of literature or beloved characters they ruin in their rush to push a political agenda. Tolkien – I don’t know why Amazon would spend so much money in buying the rights to certain elements of Tolkien’s work and characters and then make this abomination of a show. Every aspect of what Tolkien wrote has been ignore and ruined by the rabid need of activists wanted to virtue signal. Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, Star Trek, James Bond, Marvel, DC, Charlies Angels, Terminator, Ghostbusters, Men in Black, Mortal Kombat….how many more works of literature and pop culture will be ruined by these people. If you want to make a generic fantasy show then great but don’t use the name of Tolkien to push a show that has little to do with what Tolkien wrote.

It's also obvious to me that a lot of the positive comments are bots and woke people trying to protect a show that is pushing their politics, if not it staggers me that people are so easily pleased with being fed substandard garbage like this.

Adar’s début drips with signifiers. ... When Adar informs Arondir in Episode 4 that he has been told many lies, some that “run so deep even the rocks and roads now believe them,” it is still a thrill. Tolkien succeeded in creating a mythic world, one that has now grown vast enough through acts of typological repetition and imitation to conquer television, too.

With war brewing and the forging of the rings seemingly still far off, the first half of The Rings of Power’s first season constitutes little more than stage-setting for the struggle to come. Given the lack of quests and central commanding figures, it often makes for less-than-gripping drama. However, given that there are four more seasons already planned, and potentially dozens of new characters to be introduced, the slow and throat-clearing build is possibly a good sign.

The Rings of Power is a reminder of what drew many of us to epic fantasy in the first place: wonder. ... This series set in an ancient realm displays one dazzling and painterly landscape after another. Power also doesn't skimp on action. [12 - 25 Sep 2022, p.10]
