There is literally nothing to like here. Bland, Dull Fan fiction at best. Consciously ignores the lore, and is so PC it hurts. I despise this rubbish ... I got the first episode down but felt dirty afterwards. AWFUL

However, the worst of all was the pervertion of the Valinor's symbol: making Galadriel rejecting Valinor (which represents the Heaven, land of Light and Rest) to prefer accept the path of the Vengeance, Darkness and Death. What is their purposes to disrupt the story this way? What are they trying to say for us? that Heaven is a bad place? that Light represents evil? Certainly, this was not the symbols that Tolkien originally created for the story, and they are perverting it designedly...

Poorly written Ill-conceived plot. A lack of interesting story or story development. Boring scenes that drag on without reason. Scenes that jump around and feel incongruous. Music doesn't fit what is on screen, swelling to denote importance while something mundane is being shown on screen. Unlikable protagonist.verly little upside to watching. I do not recommend.

Fortunately, we the true Tolkien fans will not allow this to happen. I am overjoyed that Amazon is being eviscerated for producing this abomination, and their hilariously idiotic decision to make this the most expensive TV show ever produced will only multiply the effectiveness of this backlash.

Let this be an example to every other production company in future. We have had enough of your disrespect and condecension. We will no longer tolerate your attempts to twist and pervert beloved worlds and stories - least of all LOTR, which is in reality no longer a story but a core part of the European mythos. I hope the incredible financial success of Top Gun demonstrates what happens when media respects its audience and its history.

So, as much as I wanted to love this show...I cannot keep being lenient with incompetent story-telling just because the visuals were amazing. Yes, each shot was a master piece... with a billion dollar budget that was the bare minimum. I knew the show was going to look good..I was here for the entertainment value... I was not entertained.

Should I Keep an open mind? I mean be patient with a show based on the promise that entertainment will be delivered at some point in the future.. I suppose. Maybe at some point this season will pick up..on episode three or four or five... The fact remains that I invested two hours expecting to be entertained and I was let down. I do not have an obligation to invest two hours of my life, so a show would have the time to properly develop and to finally give me back my investment with enough dividends. Good shows deliver entertainment from the pilot episode. And many great ones reel you in from the first ten minutes and won't let you go. The first scene reminded me of the child scenes of Maleficent..Actually the whole show remind me more or less of the first Maleficent film. A lot of magnificent digital visuals but the film was soul less. This is a heart-less, soul-les copy of Lord of the Rings. Had this show not had the Lord of the Rings label pasted on front I wouldn't even had past the first 20 minutes, which is what usually give new pieces of entertainment to grab my attention. I gave this one 2 hours just because of my appreciation of the Tolkien universe. Two hours wasted...Not going to give this show one more minute of my time. There is so much more and better content in streaming entertainment to keep wasting my time miserably.

For whatever reason, the writers have written these character to be soulless and completely unlikable and for me that’s a deal breaker. The other problems is the editing, makeup, costumes, pace, and the hit you over the head injection of politics — though, I ignored the politics in an effort to like the show… and I really wanted to like this show.

The editing - was so jarring that I couldn’t tell where we were in the timeline — characters seemingly had magical teleportation capabilities. The makeup - had the harfoots and humans look like they lived in a dumpster, yet the female harfoot had impeccable lipgloss and rouge. The costumes - were so generic for most of the characters … just made them dingy on the humans and harfoot. The elves smilingly don’t change closets at all for long stretches of time, yet still look pristine. The Pace what killed me was the pointless dialogue that dragged on and never really made a point that drove the plot. And finally The Politics - I try to avoid using the term “woke” because it’s so over used and with Amazons ROP the problem isn’t unique to entertainment. The problem is the inability to support strong female characters without diminishing and ridiculing the male characters. Amazon has managed to make all of the make elves look like feckless tools. And they’ve managed to make the human males come off as stupid and bad (bad guys) only to contrast the greatness of the female or POC characters. When Amazon claps back at critics by calling them racists or sexist, they fail to look inward and see how they’re depicting certain people and themselves eliciting the negativity… or maybe that’s the entire point of their actions.

That said, it wasn’t all bad. The dwarfs were really well done and had great personalities… The character Disa made those scenes enjoyable… though she did benefit from unusual good editing and writing. …. Also, the visuals were quite good and looked like piles of cash, but that’s the most tacky part of it all — it’s indicative of the times we live, money buys everything but good taste and talent.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Like finding a 10-dollar bill in the lavatory.

Dialogue, script, some casting- and costume choices, story lines and cutting makes it so. There is no story to hook the viewers interest on.. Why should I follow Galadriels vengeance, when she so keen on to leave stray fellow soldiers behind? And that she can defeat threats well enough on her own? Or argue with her friend Elrond? Or see her jump to her death in the middle of the ocean? The feminist message writing shines through (Too much on the nose), like an infested wound and I keep thinking: "Why is this in Tolkien-fantasy?".

It is "Star Wars 8 Last Jedi" all over again. People saying stuff - it sounds cool, but makes no sense. People doing cool stuff and the visuals looks grand... but it makes no sense.

And let me be first to point out that the Harfoot-Hobbits depiction seem to be a mix of Ewoks and European gypsies (Wide-waist skirts, moving- not wrong whit that, says Borat). I liked the scene when they ate berries and being a cheap copy of the Shire hobbits. A 2 minute glimmer of a much greater past... And I didn't hate the dwarf scenes ether. Disa is the only happy-go-charming character in this saga, 2ep. in, and the only one I can relate to, ether thou I'm white and she's black.

The relationship of Bronwyn and Arondil does not make me intrigued. Their mix race/ethnicity story is also on the nose and the obvious modern-racism still makes me wonder: "why is this in my Tolkien-fantasy??". And Theo (not Theon) looks quite like a young Anakin Skywalker: half curious, half orphan, half disappointed... Like me.. is he gonna turn EVIL?.. But (again) the scary bits and the orc looks grand.

So watching this show as a fan, was like diving into a outhouse finding a 10-dollar bill: "I discover at least something that I didn't expected". The rest is constipated confused figures pissing dark blood. I've got a greater understanding now why some Muslims get angry when infidels desecrates their religion and try to portray Mohamed. To compare Lord of the Ring with this series is to compare Taj Mahal to a Neanderthals dung house.

But it's not a complete Serbian Film in the Willow Room, Your Highness... so while the dumpster fire burns, I'll keep watching.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Two episodes in and I want my two hours of time back. It's a CW show, with a bigger budget but directed by someone who thinks "bitter" and "salty" can be a characters entire personality.

Music: neither good nor bad, it doesn't stick with you but it's not badly performed.
CGI: decent, except the birds when the Elves were sailing.
Acting: is more wooden than an Ent, save Markella Kavenagh (Nori) who at least delivers some character, even though her introduction was like watching Disney's the Little Mermaid: her friend, Flounder/Poppy even gets stuck and has to be pulled out. Elrond (Amayo) leaves a greasy feeling on the tongue after he speaks, but at least he can make more expressions than Morfydd Clarke who only has one: eyes wide open, or lips pursed.
The story: VERY loosely based on Tolkien's works, but if you removed/changed the names like Valinor, Galadriel, Elrond etc, to something else, I'd never have thought it was Tolkien-inspired.

I can understand with them wanting to do their own thing, but the casual racism thrown about with Elves acting like watchers over Men as far East as the Southlands, the slang "knife-ears" (very modern slang for Elves btw), the very weird pronounciation of Morgoth and Galadriel (Morrrrgoth and Galadrrrriel), the weird fakeness of the sea, the scene where handmaidens start to strip the Elves headed to Valinor... it's just so off. Like they wanted to create a deep pool of culture and tradition, but we get a puddle instead.

Two episodes in and we're already getting a sense of Women Are Right, Men Are Dumb, but some decisions seem dumber than others: Galadriel leading her team, all wearing mail and plate in temperatures cold enough to cause frostbite, or Galadriel jumping ship in the middle of nowhere...

I did like the orcs we've seen so far though.

I have refrained from making too many, of any, lore comparisons: this review would never finish if I did, but suffice to say is that this is merely standing on the shoulders of giants to even be noticed. You think anyone would even tune in if it didn't have "the Lord of the Rings" in the title?

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Don't listen to the paid 10/10 reviews of people claiming to be "real" Tolkien fans. This fictional tale of the second age contradicts almost everything canonical Tolkien wrote. From the elves only Gil-Galad is portrayed faithfully and fells like an elf. All of the elves act like humans with the slight difference that they speak overly complicated, in fact so complicated it's hard to understand them sometimes. GalaDRiel gets bullied in the beginning. The worst offence is certainly GalaDRieL if you know what I mean. Nothing about her character is canon starting from how her brother died and how she is a commander of the northern armies to how she is commanded to go to Valinor ??? (as if you can be commanded to go there) and then refusing at the last minute and deciding to jump off the ship(I guess her genius plan is to swim back to Middle Earth). The funniest thing was when Elrond the actual commander of Gil-Galad's armies told GalaDRieL how she is the commander of the northern armies and she replies with something of the sort of spoken like a true politician. I kid you not I totally expected Elrond to respond with "What is a politician my lady?". It was so stupid how they showed the darkening of Valinor and The War of Wrath for like 30 seconds casually skipping 2 thousand years. For the amount of money they spent they could've at least shown us Morgoth, Eärendil, Gothmog, Ancalagon or at least the Valar throwing Melkor through the door of night. They didn't even bother to tell us the name of the war, like everyone is just supposed to know. Episode 2 was just very boring to be honest with you. I liked how they made Moria, although it seems like they copied DA Origins. I was expecting the dwarves to have a scottish accent, but I think they went overboard with it to the point where it seemed like they were just mindless/primal brutes who care only for drinking, eating and mining. And I spotted a scene at the end that troubles me a lot, I think we might get a plotline where there's conflict over a Silmaril in the second age?, but we'll wait and see. The whole plotline with harad and the southern lands is somewhat interesting which proves the point that they should've just made a series about the travels of the Blue Wizards in the East and South. Oh and we have a wizard in the second age as well now, how very original. Also I thought his fall as a meteor was very Tyrael-esque. All in all this is total fanfiction, and the acting and dialog aren't very good either. I only place 2 stars because the visuals are on a very good level. Expand

I could just 'see' every scene getting shot, and the poor editing (it really is bad. No fluidity between cuts, often noticeable lack of background continuity, etc) and merely adequate acting only exacerbated that. It felt like a lesser homage to so many things. The scene near the beginning which introduces the multiracial hobbits (sorry, 'harfoots'...) was taken straight out of Hook with the lost boys. Only very poorly done. This series so far is sappy, saturated, unengaging, unimmersive, and dismisses the source material in fundamental ways, only to replace it with unnecessary drivel. Totally formulaic, with undeserved swelling orchestral music over pretty and ultimately vapid imagery. Hope you like glittery shots of shimmering forests of soft lighting. So much soft lighting.

They bastardized Galadriel, and basically turned her into a less charismatic Xena. In general, elves are cool. Or at least they should be. They were impressive for all kinds of reasons in Middle Earth. Rankin/Bass elves were amazing. Jackson's were... ok. For some reason nowadays, it's common to portray them as effeminate, preppy-emos. Well, they certainly did here. When not trying to force awe with a sledgehammer, the dialogue is just facile words coming out of a sad-puppy-dog-type face. Unless it's Galadriel, who's a neurotic-paranoid Xena, talking about the arbitrary evil she senses.

And of course the polarizing issue - the rather inorganic multi-diverse representation. I don't have a problem with elves as whatever colored skin as a general concept. I think racism is anachronistic and disgraceful. I also think one can criticize the opaqueness of the casting choices, within the parameters of the Middle Earth universe, and not be considered racist. It saddens me that we are in a place where this distinction cannot be made. It breaks immersion, and totally thwarts the long-nurtured understanding of the ins and outs of how Middle Earth works.

That universe happens to not really have any people of color in it, canonically speaking. Largely because Tolkien was inspired by Norse mythology and things like Beowulf. If there were a show about African mythology and had some Asians in it, i'd be making the same points. People love Tolkien. Serious fans who have had LOTR embedded in them since growing up might get reactionary if fundamental aspects are changed for the alleged sake of equality. And the ones who don't care about these common sorts of modifications or appropriations, in my opinion, are not truly fans. Probably of anything, since ideology supersedes any kind of taste refinement whatsoever.

With war brewing and the forging of the rings seemingly still far off, the first half of The Rings of Power’s first season constitutes little more than stage-setting for the struggle to come. Given the lack of quests and central commanding figures, it often makes for less-than-gripping drama. However, given that there are four more seasons already planned, and potentially dozens of new characters to be introduced, the slow and throat-clearing build is possibly a good sign.
