The show is worse when it moves away from the game's writing, but its insulting when they copy pasted some dialogues just to add a silly line between and change the whole spirit of the scene. Theres laziness doing the show, with a lot of passivity for the details of the original script. The lack of zombies is due to lack of budget in producers words, not due to creative design, is pure medicrity.

Always trust HBO with the adaptations, they are simply the best in quality.
While the original videogame's story beats remain the same it feels so much expanded. Pedro and Bella are perfect as Joel and Ellie. Can not wait for the next episode.

It is an adaptation, so it is not meant to be a copy paste of the game.
In term of casting, Gabriel Luna felt to me like a perfect match as Tommy when he appeared on screen. Bella and Pedro feels different, but it is clearly meant to be. Bella Ramsey was 18 y-o during the shoot, so there is this feeling that she is old as Ellie but in the second game.

This first episode is very successful in term of acting as Joel and Ellie are as indifferent to each other as they are at the beginning of the game. Looking forward to see how this indifference will turn into the father-daughter connection, the central piece of the game.
The camera viewing, sometimes purposely identical as in the game, is very well done, just as it should be and not excessive.
With all the past failure of game adaptions seen on screen, this show confirms that the involvement and direction of the original game creator is absolutely necessary in order to recreate, at least partially, the feeling experienced when playing the original game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. As a big fan of the game, I can say that it was an excellent adaptation, very good performances and the setting is worthy. When they announced that Pedro Pascal will be Joel, I loved it, however, at first, I didn't like the choice of Bella Ramsey as Ellie, however, with the first trailer, I realized that it was an excellent decision. Now with the premiere of the first episode, I can prove how good the cast is. As much as the appearance is not the same, they have faithful personalities, for example, that their personality is identical to the game, enabling one of the most impactful scenes in the game, and probably in the series. Pedro Pascal was incredible, in the first episode, he showed what a good actor he is. The interactions between Tess and Joel were better, mainly for showing more of what it's like to be a smuggler.
Thus, Ellie Williams is introduced, as a 14-year-old girl, with a great purpose, and Joel and Tess must take her to a group of terrorists, known as the Fireflies.
I need to emphasize that the series does not focus only on being faithful to the game, but also on being realistic, especially in the excellent beginning of the series, showing an interview in the 60s, where an epidemiologist talks about the risk of fungi like Cordyceps, evolving and starting to infect humans due to global warming.
The soundtrack made by Gustavo Santaolalla is perfect just like in the game.
Conclusion: An excellent first episode, being a faithful and beautiful introduction, even for people who haven't played the game.

Great pilot. They were really loyal to the source material and even enhanced it in some places. Prologue was better than the game in my opinion. Starring characters are very good for the job. Looking forward to next episodes!

My opinion has absolutely nothing to do with the gay aspect either. I would feel the exact same way if it was Victoria secret models walking around topless for hour. Instead of telling the story the show runners took the opportunity to show the audience a gay love story we needed to see, and this is according to the directors actual statement. I am so sick of these idiots forcing their SJW garbage into every piece of entertainment. Cancelled my HBO Max sub and wont be back. Expand

Why, what right do you have to actually force people to watch such openly homosexual scenes? All people have different views, different religions, and if someone is interested in certain content, there are plenty of ways to choose the right movie. But the game is absolutely not about that. Why are you doing this? To observe international values, to promote propaganda here, to receive a TV award? You have no right to do this! For many people with different views, such homosexual content is simply not acceptable! If you even wanted to come up with additional plot branches with homosexuals, you could do it less openly, why should I watch it? We could just leave behind the scenes explicit scenes and show a hint that this couple is homosexual, lives together and that's it! You are violating people's rights! Try to understand how people with other religions and life values of the present family feel. Imagine if you were forced to watch, for example, a whole series of how animals are tortured, would you like it? For some people, what you have shown causes similar feelings. Shame! Expand

I had high expectations given the budget and the source material.
The cast didn't convince me at all, especially Bella Ramsey who really seemed to me unsuitable for the role, Pedro isn't bad but seems bored more disillusioned. he seems bored even at the beginning when his daughter is still alive, while in the game we see a stark difference in Joel between before and after.

Can't wait for other episodes. This was a well-done tribute to the game, with plenty of the original things that made it one of the best story games out there, with also new things to look forward to in the future. Pedro is killing it as Joel!

Lol the review bombs are hilarious. Go back in your hole.

I can understand why people who haven't played the original material are not as excited as me for this but giving it under 5 is just laughable. This was good from start to finish. I hope the same tension stays for the whole series.

By leaning just enough on the source material but not so much as to lose sight of the mission, which is to deliver a gut-wrenchingly emotional and poignant story, The Last of Us is not just the perfect adaptation; it’s an adaptation that has the potential to transcend even the original game.
