It was one of those life changing experiences that will stick with me forever. One of the best stories ever told in entertainment IMO. I’ve come back to it on every generation of consoles since to relive the excellence of the story telling. I was very nervous going into this show because of the importance that the game holds in my heart, and partly because of how entertainment has burned us recently. That being said, I was extremely pleased at how they were able to hold true to the source material (which seems like a rare thing nowadays) and truly capture the feel of the game. Changes have been made, but not mindless changes just to be noticed and different. The changes that have been made were deliberate and calculated. As a recap, I was very very pleased and I have trust in HBO to take care of this beloved story. Hope the rest of the season can keep up. Expand

As a fan of the Last of Us games, I was very satisfied with this adaptation. It really recreated the feeling of the game, while still managing to create its own unique portrait. I can’t wait to see the next episodes. I would say it is an immersive and captivating start to something huge.

My score is relative to other films of the same genre. Trying to compare a rom-com to a science fiction film would be largely irrelevant.

When I see a minor role cast really well - I have a feeling that a production is going to be very good... because corners are not cut, and quality is important to the people working on the film. So, when a minor role like "Sarah" is cast perfectly with someone like Hana Hayes I anticipate a high-quality product.

HBO turns out high quality films - so, it is no surprise to see this one well reviewed... like deciding if the latest HBO film is going to be a 7, a 10 or something in-between is foregone conclusion.

I'm guessing Pedro Pascal as Joel and Anna Torv as Tess are going to be almost always regarded as very good casting. But, Bella Ramsey as Ellie is probably going to be controversial. I'm guessing the producers were looking for a tough, un-feminine personality and somewhat boxed themselves into those limiting criteria. Anna Tov obviously falls into that type-cast. I'm guessing Bella Ramsey will do a good job... but, I'm thinking the producers are trying too hard to toughen up the character.

I know from experience that you can't judge a film series by the first episode. Especially the first episode which basically has the purpose of setting up the remainder of the series. By the time I've watched the first season, I may come back and change my score. Same thing when I've watched the entire series.

By the way, I've never played the game - so, I had no preconceptions - which would be irrelevant regardless.

First episode in and I'm pretty happy with it. The world of the show feels fairly well lived-in. The acting was all fairly solid. I'm still a little unsure about Bella Ramsay, who is very good but doesn't act with her eyes especially well - I think she may grow on me though. The dashes of humor were well received.

So far, what is holding this back is that it is a little formulaic, but that is to be expected since there are only so many ways to show the apocalypse and its aftermath. I believe that as the show goes on, the relationship between Joel and Ellie will make this one of the best of 2023.

Also, I gotta say - I see a lot of people talking about woke casting or something - I did not get any annoying woke vibes at all. The ethnicity of certain characters simply has no bearing on the believability of the world or the machinations of the plot.

It struggles to deliver a compelling story outside of its cast, however, underutilising its post-apocalyptic landscape and losing a lot of its context to be slimmed down for the medium. Pacing is inconsistent and, while individual episodes are rock solid, as a collective whole the show never picks up speed, leaving its undeniably emotional finale a little anticlimactic.

Despite this, performances from Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsay deliver crackling chemistry that goes a long way to smoothing out the cracks. Backed with superb creature design and a gorgeous soundtrack, The Last of Us: Season 1 is a TV event you do not want to miss.

Some of the episodes are so empty and feel so unimportant to the main storyline that you can just skip them entirely or the most part of them and won't really feel missing something in the end.

It either feels that the show is trying to follow the primary source very close, but at the same time it doesn't quite catch its soul. If it really did, it would be top notch as the original was.

HBO should have given more money to VFX because infected in a TV series where infected affects the environment and the moral of the characters is an essential part of the apocalyptic world of The last of us.

If only there were a template of some sort like a game that could tell you about certain events that include infected, well I guess they just brushed over every single part that included infected because let me tell you in simple terms. The amount of scenes with action, infected and violent scenes shows me that the apocalypse is possibly better than real-life.

Other than that there were some unnecessary changes, because of certain "cultural" notions. Some of the characters are not taken directly from the source.

Pedro Pascal as Joel does a superb job, but I feel that the Dialogue given was lacking from the writers and scripters.

Bella Ramsey also does a great job as Ellie. Great Job kiddo.

    Rating time:
Story and Plot: 7/10, wait, isn't the last of us story a masterpiece? It is but there were so many unnecessary changes to characters, scenes, and pacing that affected the quality and the powerfulness of the TV show's plot.
Cast and Acting: 8/10, Very nice but lacking some dialogue, weird cast changes and choices, but the acting is nearly spot on.
VFX: 8/10, Done really well, but again lacking in areas where there needs to be during the plot.
Adaption Quality: 7/10, It's good but misses the mark by far.

Overall, 7/10, I know it's meant to be 7.5 but I don't give points for free, not only that I am being particularly hard on This TV show because the game exists as the perfect form and original source.
This show was close to nailing it but was pushed down by a lot of changes in plot, characters etc.

I don't know who thought by changing events of a perfect story would be good, it's like ordering a steak but instead of a steak you get a well-made chicken schnitzel, good but not what I wanted.

As for the future of the TV series, I hope Pedro Pascal is ready for some Golfing.

About the changes, I don't dislike them, it's just they did not affect the plot, it was just an excuse to get through a certain part quicker than normal. Maybe if you add some unexpected consequences it might keep viewers interested instead of just knowing what happens.

Another thing is not to change important and impactful parts of the story, you can change for Season 2 though because The Last of Us Part 2 was pretty bad in the story department. But if your going to continue the Journey with Joel and Ellie(Young) then I'm Very much interested, we haven't seen that before.

The Last of Us stays close to the source material, while diving deeper into characters and relationships. The show focuses more on the danger of human corruption than hordes of infected that you fight off in the game. The cinematography, acting, music, directing, and screenplay are all excellent and seeing a video game adaptation have this much quality is refreshing since other video game adaptations have been rather bad until now. Where the show falters is the pacing from episode to episode and the overall writing for the season. It starts out strong but eventually things start to feel rushed and ultimately leaves you unsatisfied with how quickly everything gets wrapped up. Also, I don’t mind a zombie, or for the show's sake a “infected” tv show to not have infected as the main focus, but I feel that they went too far with this idea, and it made infected feel nonexistent, and the world feel empty and safe. I tried being as unbiased as possible to the show since I have played the game, but I can’t hide the fact that I was very disappointed the longer the show went on. I loved the beginning and I thought we were about to have one of the best shows ever, oh how I was wrong. I don’t mind changes to the story to better adapt to tv, that’s understandable, but this show easily could have been 11-13 episodes long and it would have been perfect. The farther along we got the more was cut from the story and the more infected fights were left out. In the game the final mission was emotional and tense where the final episode for the show felt dry and quick. I couldn’t believe how fast they rushed everything and even cut things out that was in the game at the end. This ruined the experience for me especially since they started out so well. Why wouldn’t you just stay as close as possible to the original story, it doesn’t make sense. Now my average is an 8, but since I have played the game and saw the potential of what this could have been I have to give it a 7. That rushed last episode really bothers me and it’s more disappointing than anything especially since the first episode hit me hard emotionally just as the beginning of the game did, so that made me excited to watch this great story be portrayed on tv and for me to watch that amazing ending unfold but unfortunately the show couldn’t deliver in the end. In my opinion this is still the best video game adaptation and I still like a lot that this show has to offer, and I am excited for the next season.

After year of awful adaptations I'm hoping for better in next episodes. No more mushrooms on pizza :)

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It's satisfying to see an Exceptional game like THE LAST OF US on TV. Played the first game and it's one of my personal favorites, and many people also rate it highly. In the first episode, I came away with mixed feelings some good and some not so good from what I saw. The big positive is Pedro pascal he's a great Joel and I hope we can see him get better. I like how they set up the world and made it such a miserable cold place and Pedro is great at conveying the hell he lives in on a daily basis. Some shots from the tv show will never live up to the game because you are in a third-person view watching this hell occur around these people and I prefer that to the television, but that's one of the practicalities of playing a video game vs a TV show. Sarah the daughter of Joel is played by an 18-year-old actress and despite them trying to make her young she's not the sweet innocent girl we get in the game, The TV show version has more of a teenage attitude and that's a big downgrade from the original work. In the scene where Sarah dies it didn't feel the same despite the acting being great from both, especially Pascal OMG he really is this show's ace. Now Ellie...... jury is still out on her. The actress who plays her started coming off as aggressive as hell right out of the gate and my impression of Ellie in the games upon meeting her was of a girl that was more reserved trying to not show her hand or reveal too much about herself because people come and go. They made her more snarky which sucks, I hope she's not this off-putting in the rest of the show because that's a big blow to the dynamic and anyone's viewing experience if she continues. Also, the relationship between Marlene and Ellie was just crammed in there to fill up space I'd rather they not even show them together until they met Joel because they had no reason to even care for each other, just keep it vague. Also, we didn't get a lot of action this week, hoping we get some great fight scenes and shootouts later but so far nothing. I'll be watching Next week and hopefully, it gets better, I wanna like this more than I do because I love the first game, but these are my feeling so far. Expand

    2. Nicely filmed and mood looks like game.
    3. plane crash was EPIC!! better than the game scene.
    4. Sarah was a good character but not perfect.
    5. marlene was excellent

    Cons:
First half was great but 20 years later it got boring, and the budget gets reduced.
Tess isn't the Tess from the game, she is more like a drugo/drinker personality and not the leader like the game. Ellie may grow on me but the moment she swears is a cringe moment. I'm not sure on eille. Joel doesn't try hard enough with his accent, but he is a good actor but not a joel.

The death scene of Sarah was needing to be longer and more emotional with words etc and again Sarah is to old for the role.

The jump scare in the second half was silly and not scary lol. I hope it gets better and again the first half was 10/10 then 20 years later scene was lame/boring except for Marlene.

But sadly like everything these days, it is cheapened by actors who do not match the character, thanks to forced diversity. Joel, Sarah and Tommy look like they are from three different continents! They are related by blood! At least cast people who look a bit alike if they are to be brothers, daughters, etc. Pedro tries his best, but he is not able to pull off Joel with conviction. And Bella Ramsey is simply not right for the role of Ellie. She was overacting in almost all her scenes. They really should have cast actors based on their acting skills instead of popularity.

Another concern is the story. Beneath the glossy high budget HBO production, this is still the same old zombie tale. And video games in general aren't made to translate well to tv/movies.
Whether they can keep it interesting or it fizzles out into another bland tv show without any substance, remains to be seen.

The show makes many unnecessary changes from the game. Clearly it is agenda driven and woke in many respects. Also what bothers me is that they didn't have 2 major showdowns with the clickers that were in the game, (likely to save on production costs), instead you get 2 filler episodes that don't really advance the plot at all...

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Episode 1 was a great start for the series, a lot of little Easter eggs for fans of the game such as Sara’s shirt Joel’s guitar and the soccer team pictures, Ellie wore Nathan drakes shirt from uncharted, it was a game accurate episode with some slight changes. They gave little more story with Sara which was welcome, we get more backstory of the fungus and how it’s a little different from the games which I personally love the addition.

    Episode 2
Probably the best episode so far, here we see another addition to the fungus in the fact that all the infected are connected, we also get a glimpse into Indonesia and how they handled the spread of the fungus. The clicker scene was amazingly well shot, Tess death scene was controversial but honestly is better than the game in my opinion.

Episode 3 By far the worst episode, look I know what you’re thinking, “you just don’t like gay people”. But that has nothing to do with why I hated this episode. I went in knowing that there would be some background into bill and Frank and I was fine with that. But how it was executed was god awful. Bill is my favorite side character in the last of us game, his interactions with Joel and Ellie are some of the funniest moments in the game, his battle hardened survival mentality doesn’t let him trust people, not even joel. When joel convinces bill to help them find a working vehicle he reluctantly agrees because he owes joel a favor. The three go on a mission through the town avoiding traps and killing a bunch of zombies. This is where we see the first bloater, Bill Joel and Ellie encounter the bloater in a school gym and are forced to fight it to move on safely. This would have worked so well for the show. They skipped out on one of the best parts of the game in order to tell a love story that didn’t even matter in the game, in fact in the game it’s revealed that Frank actually grew to hate Bill before he killed himself, it was not this plushy romantic softy love story like the show suggests.

Compared to the other dystopian shows out there, this is clearly in the "Walking Dead" camp, not the much higher "Station Eleven" category. All the tropes are in there. TWD 's nihilism was very refreshing and poignant back in the days (season 2 and 3). Besides it is inferior to the "Girl with all the Gifts" which has the exact same plot.

This world would never fail to entertain or keep the viewer at the edge of their seat, but sadly, the creators undermine their own story's wonderful premise by failing to keep a proper pace, losing opportunities for action and emotional sequences, and, worst of all, choosing to cater to the hypocritical and nefarious political agenda of our time: woke intersectionalism.

I'm sure you understand the need for equal opportunity and the eradication of prejudice; these are lofty goals that would help advance mankind towards a happier, more prosperous future. However, in modern Hollywood's case, the ends do not justify the means. A resentful industry, bent on presenting a façade of righteousness thru a "holier than thou attitude" cannot possibly advance the cause of impartiality when its true agenda is to receive lavish praise and large monetary gain at the cost of integrity.

"The Last of Us" television series portrays the original computer game's heroic, Caucasian protagonist as a dead-beat dad with little spine or decision making ability. It further chooses to cast every authority figure in the show as a woman. This would be fine in any previous era of media except our current, in which disparaging men, especially white men, has become commonplace. There is absolutely no justification for this racist and sexist objective; it is based on hate and long held bitterness that betrays the mental illness of its production instead of providing a captivating story with a moral to it.

To further complicate the matter, Mazin and Druckmann fail to understand the simpler points of proper pacing, plot and script writing. The first episode meanders without a clear trajectory, completely skipping over a bombing (presented without any clear goal) as well as a bloody attack on the Fireflies, and choosing, instead, to highlight less compelling moments in the protagonist's lives, doing so without providing momentum or fostering concern in the viewer. The result is a significant loss of opportunity in terms of action in the show, and a massive loss of character development and presentation.

The end result is that the show becomes background television fodder, unworthy of a true attention span, unable to hold active interest in its viewer, and instead devolving into a pathetic vehicle to a narcissistic political rhetoric. Only time will tell if the next episodes will be able to overcome these massive shortcomings, but I wouldn't hold me breath, if I were you.

This still pales massively in comparison to the game in every way so far. Mostly the scenes are nowhere near as impactful as their source counterpart.

The game came at a time somewhat just before the whole zombie thing wasn't absolutely done to death, and it was mainly the stellar performances, the bond the characters had, and the editing that made the game and set it apart. Today, it has to be at least equal or better or it's just another beyond-tired zombie show. Hopefully, it'll win me over in the coming weeks and I'll alter this review/rating.

    Episode 3:
As agenda-pushing at it felt, I wouldn't have been okay with it if they were straight either. It was a perfectly fine "filler" type episode..but damn, they're telling the entire 1st game's story in just 9 episodes and they're "wasting" it with stuff like this?

I just found nothing to like-neither the characters nor the plot. Expand

The truth is, this adaptation does not convince me, it does not bring anything new, I hope this series improves, it is only the first chapter so I have hope but while I am disappointed

Metacritic and all other review websites have lost all credibility with these endless "10/10 AWESOME!!! EXCELLENT!!! BEST THING SINCE SLICED BREAD!!!" reviews.

Not too long ago, you could take a single look at the overall ratings from metacritic, imdb, etc and at a glance tell whether a tv show or movie was great, good, mediocre, or awful. Precisely because these ratings were genuine.

The last of us is the same. Overblown, overhyped, and overrated.

As a gay guy, I appreciated the fact that they were highlighting a relationship that was present in the game, but the way it was done came off as a poorly-wrought soap opera something that Lucille Bluth could have written while on a bender, rather than something realistic to actual gay relationships or at all coming close to the characters portrayed in the game.

Pedro Pascal is the only shining light in this series that gives it any kind of dramatic power and prestige. I would have liked two episodes with the gay couple and make it about them being with Ellie and Pedro while cracking jokes, engaging in witty humor, and killing zombies. Instead, we got this soap opera straight of of Days of Our Lives or The Bachelor with people ponderously gazing out windows and crying buckets of tears every few scenes. It was nice that they started out with the badass gun collection, handyman skillset, and manly way to subvert the typical gay stereotypes, but then the piano scenes and everyone crying 24/7 and giggling over strawberries rubbed me the wrong way. Rather than a tale of badasses, it went out with a whimper and a tear. Even staying true to the anger with the original game end to the couple would have been tougher and more manly and more gay in my opinion. But what do I know, I'm just a gay guy that was unimpressed with the direction. They ruined my man Ron Swanson like this and did this couple that was far more humorous and witty dirty by bad directing.

I'm still only through episode 3 and I must say this one was simply terrible. I had to create an account to post this since I honestly feel I've just wasted an hour of my life. Even the best shows have some filler episodes, but the woke agenda is stronger than ever in this one. I seriously can't recall a more boring and useless episode in the last ten years of TV, and hear me out: II'm still only through episode 3 and I must say this one was simply terrible. I seriously can't recall a more boring and useless episode in the last ten years of TV, and hear me out: I wouldn't have minded if they added a 5 or even 10 minute scene showing the romance between Bill and Frank, but how the heck is it justified to devote an ENTIRE 75 minute episode to a side-character gay romance in a 9 episode "miniseries". It doesn't make any sense to waste so much precious time in something that doesn't progress the story at all. Expand

An entire episode is a flashback whose only purpose is to explain how they got the car they're driving. Who cares. An entire episode is dedicated to worldbuilding a town's 'civil war' and Joel's forced to take sides. Very next episode literally everyone dies and there are no lasting consequences. Pointless. I haven't even watched the whole thing but I'm sure if you just watched the first and last episodes you would understand everything because nothing in between serves any purpose. Summary: "2 strangers grow closer moving from point A to point B during the worlds most uneventful apocalypse" 2/10 for decent acting Expand

I tried to like it but it falls so short I just couldn't. I rolled my eyes when the fungus was blamed on climate change. The writing and casting are the weakest links, followed by the directing. The opening of the original game is stunning and has a dramatic impact on the viewer. In the TV show on the other hand, it is completely watered down and diluted so it loses most of that impact. The main players are badly miscast and neither look nor act the part. Also they mumble their lines regularly which is a failure of the director. Pacing is slow, too much talking but not saying anything. Sarah is unlikeable and spends her time scowling, hostile and angry, nothing like the pleasant daughter of Joel in the game. The original game's voice actors for Joel and Ellie are light years ahead of their counterparts in the TV show. And then to the worst part, the complete miscasting of the most important character, Ellie. The casting director should look for a new career. Expand

Ellie is one of the most beloved video game characters of all time & to cast Bella Ramsey for her role is a really bad joke. There are so many other qualified legit actresses that would have been perfect for her role I cant help but wonder if there was nepotism involved in her casting. Bill was an awesome character in the game, I could care less that he was gay but the episodes hour & 15 minute love story was boring, uninteresting & cut out one of the better parts of the game. The worst part is seeing the mainstream media discrediting any online criticism as "review bombing" or "homophobia". Im %100 liberal but I am sick & tired of the entertainment industry trying to insert itself as the main battlefield in the culture wars. It's almost as if they're trying to alienate people who aren't on the fringe. If you expect this show to pull on your heart stings like the game you will likely be annoyed & disappointed. It could, better yet should have been a lot better than this. Expand

Bad casting, hateful anti-Christian messaging, thinly veiled homosexuality and full of boring filler content. Whoever thought Bella Ramsey made for a good Ellie should be fired immediately.

By leaning just enough on the source material but not so much as to lose sight of the mission, which is to deliver a gut-wrenchingly emotional and poignant story, The Last of Us is not just the perfect adaptation; it’s an adaptation that has the potential to transcend even the original game.
