It was a wonderful episode.
In my opinion it was a smart move to change Bill's story from the game, they deepened his character a lot more and I'm glad Frank got a chance to make a proper introduction. This episode showed how to remain human in an inhuman world. I also tip my hat to the acting. Also, it tied the previous episodes together very nicely, showed how Joel and Tess' relationship with Bill and Frank developed and in the end it set Joel on the right path and gave him a purpose in life that he hasn't had for who knows how long.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Masterful piece of art!
Coming from a TLOU mad fan(first game, not the 2nd one) I think this episode was a genius work of art, directing acting scripting plot pasing - EVERYTHING!
It was the first episode of the series where I felt for the first time that the show did better than the source material. As a straight man I obviously felt uncomfortable during the first 'certain' scene. Some people are too butthurt to accept that it is OK and NORMAL to feel uncomfortable, that's 'sexual orientation' means! Other than 'that' scene, I've watched the episode 5 times already, binged reaction videos and I'm dying to watch what comes up next - although I already know the plot, there's always room to do it better.

Stuff I didn't like on this episode:
1. Raiders attack - Bill dumbed down to standing in the middle of the street with a sniper rifle. Take cover?
2. Raiders attack, again - It's raining yet the fire traps work perfectly fine. Not to mention Bill set those up over 10 years prior, we see that at the beginning.
3. Not enough interaction between bill & Joel, or frank & tess. too short too little.
4. and above all: The suicide letter!
For some reason the show runners keep dumbing the source material down to a point where they keep shoving explanations in our faces. Like Episode 2 where Joel looks at his watch after connecting with Ellie, then comes Bill's 'realization' letter that it's better to partner up than die alone.
WE GOT THAT! Best easter egg:
The open window. like in the game, main menu has a closed but broken window. Symbolism in its finest.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Sad, but predictable, to see this being review bombed. I have no idea of what 'agenda' some people seem to think gay people are so desperate to push.

Anyone who cannot see past their own bias shouldn't consider themselves qualified to post a fair and honest review. Many of these reviews are written under the guise of this 'deviating from the game'. If that's the case, you really should have been review bombing every episode so far. There have been major deviations from the game this far and in my opinion they have all added something great to a story so well loved by so many.

I cannot review based on what a newcomer may see as I have played the original game time and time again. So many claiming to be faithful to the game and angry at the changes yet often getting things completely wrong. Bill was gay in the game. Spoiler alert, Ellie is also gay. So buckle up homophobes. This was one of the most powerful and well told episodes of television I have ever seen. It showed the gentle side of humanity, which will be extreme contrast in what we are likely to see going forward. To say a love story has no place in The Last of Us? Well you haven't been paying attention. The entire DLC for Part 1 was a love story for goodness sake. Saddens me that gayness is only tolerated or palatable when it is hinted at or nuanced. Thankfully I know many straight people watching this show who can appreciate this for what it is. We aren't ticking boxes, we don't have an agenda. It's a human story plain and simple.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Clunky Metacritic decided to eat my review, so once more, briefer: for me, episode 3 is the best one yet in this series, although telling the backstory of Bill and Frank in such an intimate manner came unexpected. But I'm really happy with the care taken, the slow pace. Performance-wise, Pedro Pascal seems to have found his stride, loved the scenes of Joel and Ellie. It strays from the game, intelligently; glad this is not mere action drivel jockeying the ghost of an emotional video game tale. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. One of the greatest episodes of TV in recent memory. Bill and Frank's relationship was so real, so heartbreaking, and yet so happy in a series that won't have many happy moments. Watching Joel bottle his emotions at the end was handled brilliantly by Pedro Pascal as well. Absolutely incredible from start to finish and sets the standard for showing any relationship, not just LGBT relationships, for media in the future.

Also, screw the homophobes dropping zeros on this episode. You're irrelevant and will continue to become irrelevant as society rightly pushes you to the fringe.

Bill and Frank were a couple in the game, so that's nothing new. The progression of their relationship was different from the original material in the game. Neil Druckmann addressed this in the post-episode interview. He said that any video game to screen translation is going to require some deviation from the original video game material (story line coherency, pacing, etc.) He said they followed a simple rule when it came to deviations in "The Last of Us". If it improved the viewer's understanding of the story and the world the characters are living in, then they deviated. Otherwise, they stayed with the original material. Obviously, Neil felt that it was important to understand that the entire world isn't full of bloodthirsty murders, and lots of people are just trying to get by and be "human". You get that understanding while playing the game from all the various interactions, sub-plots, and notes you encounter while playing. They certainly don't have the ability to translate all of that to the screen in this series. So this is an alternative way to let the viewer have the same understanding of the world that the video game player already knows. Expand

One of my favorite things about the games is the incredible depth of the stories behind the characters - even those sometimes only mentioned in passing and left to the imagination. This episode of the series, Long Long Time, is such a gift to fans like me who played the games and who hoped that the show would open the doorway for more than just a re-telling of the game events. I could never have dreamed that the backstory of Bill and Frank would have so exceeded anything I could have hoped for. Although their relationship came to an end in a different way in the game, I’m impressed with the changes and am so grateful to have gotten to see such a gorgeous, gut wrenching, thoughtful, worthy telling of their story. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This episode gives us a decent story of how one can rebuild their lives in a more positive manner in the apocalypse. It is well-acted, has a good emotional core, and serves as a nice, almost self-contained story within the show. But that is also where my problems with it lie. I cannot help but feel that more time should have been spent more time focusing on the relationship between Joel and Ellie. Though they still have enough time to build up a proper bond between these two, I feel like it would have been best to give it a little bit more focus in this episode. It should also be stated that some changes are made to a character from the game that doesn't entirely sit right with me (and here I will delve into spoilers)
Bill's little town is too utopian for my taste. In the game, it makes sense no one would raid the town, because of both the traps and the crazy amount of infected that Bill uses as a natural defense. In the show, the traps are there, but the infected are missing, which raises the question of why the town isn't dealing with more raider troubles. It also takes away from Bill's survivalist attitude a bit. I get that he is more of a domesticated fella here because he has Frank to look after, but I think I would have preferred him a bit more distrusting and pragmatic. Thus far, this is the weakest episode of the show in my opinion, and seeing that I am still willing to rate it a 7 is a good sign for the overall quality of the show up to this point. Looking forward to the next episode

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. As a stand-alone thing, this episode is brilliant. 10/10. But as an episode in a series? It wasn't the wisest choice when you have only 6 more episodes left of the series and there's still so much more to cover even if each episode is an hour to hour-in-a-half long. So as an episode in a series, 6/10. It's a brilliant story with brilliant acting and as a gaybie this made me ugly cry nearly as hard as San Junipero in Black Mirror, but I'm aware that it didn't add anything to the story. Someone could watch this out of context and love it, which means it's a bit of a filler episode made for fans of the game. Nothing wrong with it, but I do think Neil and Craig should have found a way to intertwine Bill and Frank's story through flashbacks throughout the episode that adds to Ellie and Joel's/the show's present plot that wouldn't have taken away from the emotional impact of either storyline. That's my own two cents regarding it, it's not a bad episode and the homophobes can suck my dick. But I hope others can respect opinions like these and recognize that they aren't an attack/reflection on the game or show. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Though I do not think it is necessary to show sex behavior on screen and it was a somewhat unconvincing fast developed relationship, but still, it just showed us two people were in love, and excellent adaptation of the original storyline, Frank turns out to be a kind and jolly fellow which connects Bill, Tess and Joel, makes the story more intense and believable. Great acting, almost cried when Joel saw Tess’ name on the letter. But I am gonna miss the “Ellie giving middle finger to Bill” scene… As I really do not think Neil as a good director, but if he was in charge of the script, it shows him has great talent in writing. It is a mystery why he fxxked up the part II game so bad…Anyway, amazing episode, keep the good work! Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Decent episode that tried to humanize and provide insight into the lives of two people who survived the outbreak. I enjoyed the characters they introduced, even if they sort of simplified them compared to the game. I thought the episode was great as a standalone episode.

However, it felt a little slow and shoehorned into the series. We spent the episode, 1/8 of the entire series, learning about two characters who we never meet again or who really have any other impact on the narrative. And they sort of just had a fairytale ending, which is fine, but cheapens the story IMO compared to the game.

Final Thoughts:

Long Long Time is a heartbreaking and hard-hitting exploration of existing in a dead world and still experiencing love. It marks the first major change from the source material, expanding the stories of Bill (Nick Offerman) and Frank (Murray Bartlett) in such breathtaking fashion that there is no question of the cast and crew’s dedication. Offerman in particular shines, keeping the viewer enthralled despite the slow pace.

That’s where some of my criticism lies. After two episodes of nicely balanced tension and action, Long Long Time brings the pace to a crawl, opting to tell a story that, while an emotional rollercoaster, does little to advance the series’ core plot and sidelines Joel and Ellie just as Joel’s armour begins to crack.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It's hilarious seeing the hate for this episode. For people thinking this is 'woke,' a reminder that Bill is gay in the game... For people complaining it adds nothing to the story, we spend the first two episodes trying to get our hands on a car battery to make the long trek across the country. Bill's story, along with his unique relationship with Tess/Joel, results in them securing that vehicle. It's a major plot point. For complaints about the amount of screen time, there are 9 episodes in season one. They have to expand on characters to further develop the world, to show the tragedy of everyday life in and out of the QZ. That also means they're going to draw out combat and clickers and all that so it achieves the maximum effect for the TV medium. This isn't a video game anymore. If you want the old game there are literally three different versions you can go replay as many times as you'd like. I'll place bets that in S2 we get a deeper view into Lev's life prior to meeting Abby and 100% all of these same hateful people will come crawling out from their caves to claim it's "trans-washing" or whatever foolish criticism they can mask their internal hatred with. This episode was beautifully written, well acted, and played an important part in the series: break up some of the Joel/Ellie time and use the Bill/Frank romance and modified conclusion to their story as a means of reminding Joel just how important finding a purpose is. We know, based on the way the episode wraps, that he's slowly warming to the notion that Ellie may be that purpose. If you're blinded to that because you're made so uncomfortable by two bearded men making out, then stop watching now because a majority of this cast is part of the LGBTQ+ community. And if you didn't know that, you didn't really understand the game or the story. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I like the fact that they've shown us the story of Bill and Frank thoroughly, because in game we just read notes and have some dialogs and it was very interesting to see how they lived prior to the period. The only thing I did not like is that Bill and Frank went to a relationship this fast. I would prefer to see how they grew closer to each other throughout some time, considering the fact that Bill is not a person who trusts easily and the timing is the worst (but probably the best for them lol :) Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Blown away how good this was. In the game the story of Bill and Frank is understated and told mostly through environmental storytelling, that works in a game but not on TV.

What’s so clever here is how they realise that and tell a better story that is more suited to a different medium. The acting was first class, and tears were shed. Brilliant, captivating television and a reminder that even those that have played the games can get a lot from this show. There were also so many easter eggs for fans, getting changed into their game outfits, line for line dialogue in places and, my absolute favourite, ending on the window which shadows back to the title screen of the first game. I’ll forever think of Bill and Frank when I see this now. They are building beautifully on what came before. It’s rare I give a 10 to anything but this was masterfully done.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Wow! I feel like this was an amazing departure from the game that was worth every minute of the screentime it was given. I love how the writers are using every opportunity to show us what the world has been like for the last 20 years -- What it means to survive in this world. It felt like a meditation on what it means to survive vs to flourish. They show us a picture of a life that is as good as it probably could be in this world. Bill was a survivor, but his character was so preoccupied with survival and the protection of what assets he had control of that he would not invite new joy into his life. And so, only by being in some way lovingly prodded to open himself up, he and Frank get to experience a better version of life together. The scene with the strawberries was a stellar way to show this. "I was never afraid before you came along." Absolutely wonderful sentiment that embodies what it means heal the injured child inside that is closed off to vulnerability because that's how he has to be to survive. I think that's what I really loved about this episode: it brought up so many central topics that are in the zeitgeist right now. Whether to take risks in order to keep engaging with the world has been a huge part of people's lives in the wake of the pandemic. The right to die/death with dignity movement is gaining steam as we increasingly become aware that what is humane for our pets we disallow for ourselves. Frank's death perfectly embodies that. No challenge to it, the show just interacts with the concept directly. The drama being gay is bound to be controversial in the US given the proportion that are fundamentalists. At least this way the story remains consumable to the homophobes by skipping this episode. That way they can get upset by other future episodes that tackle other gay relationships and what is like to be trans under an oppressive regime later after they are more invested. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

I wouldn't change anything about the story except for some of the things that just felt like continuity disconnects. Like are they farming animals? Where does Bill get power to weld after his fuel's gone bad? Why was Bill opposed to making things look nicer? Dude plays music and lives in a place with clear aesthetic sensibilities. The whole part where Bill is shot just seemed out of place, like the tactical survivalist is just going to walk out into the openest part of the middle of the street and just stand there and shoot. Yeah. No. All in all it gets a 9 because it was absolutely touching and made me cry twice with its utter sweetness and for telling a story worth telling.
