It's been nearly 2 decades since I have been able to say that I genuinely liked the direction that Star Trek was going. Strange New Worlds captures the optimism and sophistication that Trek deserves. Everything comes together for a great though imperfect representation that I'm proud to accept as Star Trek.
Pike and Spock carry over the same great chemistry from Discovery without the convoluted and awkward overarching plot. Uhura is delightful and inspiring. The Dialogue is witty and sharp. The cinematography ditches the rapid cuts and excessive lens effects of Discovery and the story lacks the stodgy stuffiness of Picard. The CG could be smoother and a few FX shots were disorienting and inconsistent. Spatial permanence and motion consistency was iffy at times but it was overall forgivable and felt more creative and faithful than recent forays into the world of Trek. The re-imagination of the Enterprise it self is my favorite redesign from the past 30 years. the story was bold and daring. Immediately relevant but not shoehorned. Over all, Good Trek, I'm looking forward to next week.
May the franchise Live long and prosper

I am not the hardest fan, but it is safe to say that I know one or two things about the Star Trek universe. And I like that they return to the original formula. An optimistic, non-capitalistic, and United Planets take on our future. As we can see, those unfamiliar with Star Trek have trouble understanding that concept -- because it is so different from everything sci-fi and fantasy out there. For those, the cheap and generic Star Trek films of the past years are probably the better content. But I hope that Strange New Worlds is the beginning of a revival of the original episodic adventure formula of the 1960s and 1980s, but also the 1990s and early 2000s before JJ Abrams appeared, who seemed to have never understood what the creator of Star Trek was talking about -- for decades. Gone is the grim-dark fascination of the newer Star Treks; this is a return to form where Starfleet and the Federation represent an idealized future for humanity, where optimism, curiosity, and personal betterment are the driving factors in the plots and character arcs. It’s less about the action and the adrenaline and more about careful, thought-provoking questions.

Anson Mount as Captain Pike is a joy to watch. He’s got the oozing charisma and laidback charm of Commander Riker, the careful diplomacy and thoughtfulness of Captain Picard, and the bravado of Captain Kirk. I’ve enjoyed several of the other characters as well: Dr. M’Benga may be one of my favorite Star Trek doctors yet, Nurse Chapel’s bolder, stronger personality is a slightly bizarre but entertaining addition to the show, and I think Number One shows a lot of potential as a really interesting character.

That’s not to say that the show doesn’t have its lumps. I find Lieutenant Noonien Singh quite irritating; her overly serious “I’m a soldier” mentality comes off less like Worf and more like Malcom Reid. Ethan Peck’s portrayal of Spock, while objectively fine, somehow feels off. SNW also shares another common frustration with more traditional Star Treks: attempts to explain the science are riddled with errors and implausibilities that make it hard to suspend one’s disbelief. As usual, the stories of Star Trek are at their best when the scientific principles at play are best left unstated.

Overall, though, this is a thoroughly enjoyable show. If we keep with another Star Trek tradition of the first season being the worst, then this will easily be the best Star Trek show we've had since TNG ended.

I can't say there was a worst episode, just a least best (the fairy tale episode - I enjoyed it, but mostly because it's emblematic of ST's willingness to go down that route). Everything in this show hits the mark. Acting, production values, stories...all of it. And I am a finicky **** Can't wait for season 2!!

To the people posting 0 or red reviews, you all sound like you didn't watch any of this but the first 5 minutes of episode 1. This is nothing like DSC and PIC, nor is it a carbon copy of TOS. And I'm not seeing any wokeness at all. Nothing but strong characters and good writing. If you like DSC and PIC more than this? You don't like Trek.

The first episode (which is brought to us by the people behind the failed CBS Treks) is much much more heavy handed than I would have liked, but overall a decent enough start. Episode 2 is where it really starts to feel like the kind of Star Trek I've been waiting for. Critically the characters really shine on the whole. Chapel is probably the only character I dislike from what's out so far. Its impressive how good the characterization is in 2 episodes compared to multiple seasons of Discovery and Picard especially since we're supposed to already really "get" who Picard is from 7 seasons of TNG. Pike is wonderful as are Number 1, Uhura and Spock (mostly). Overall I just wish this was the show we got instead of discovery years ago, and it is unfortunate that that show's continuity plays into this one (albeit in minor ways). I hope that it is successful and the people at CBS take that success as reason to move away from the Kurtzman style of Trek. Expand

I can't imagine that the people who are dissing NuTrek because it is "Woke" have ever seen old Trek shows. Hell, the first pilot (with Cpt. Pike) was turned down by NBC. Not in the last place because a woman as Number One was unthinkable. How can a woman be in such high and influential position? TOS also had an African woman on the bridge and a Russian helmsman; in the sixties!!

But yeah, I guess nothing really changed the last 60 years. But instead of NBC executives, the "critics" are now adolescent boys still living with their mom because they have no clue what it means to be a real man.

They take the best things from all of the previous series, add in engaging characters, and the freedom of the episodic stories to go wherever it wants to, and you get an interesting, meaningful, and also just plain fun, new ST show. I like Discovery, but I already care more about almost every character we've seen here in SNW than I do in Discovery. Discovery's friendships and "chemistry" feel forced and awkward compared to this cast and these characters. This show's relationships and storylines feel more naturally developed (aside from Spock and a certain other crewmember's flirtations, that is).

As usual, though, we have the incel brigade with their misogyny and hatred of anything that isn't trying to promote toxic masculinity, poison the comments section of every new show that doesn't focus on the strong white male rescuing some weak, sexy woman. So, just ignore those reviews and enjoy the latest, and possibly greatest, new Star Trek series!

This series really captures the essence of Star Trek. The characters, stories, dialogue are very fresh and engaging.

Some of the other recent Star Trek series seem to wander off or drag out story lines and characters. The other series characters and plots can become absurd with the exception of Picard.

The other recent Star Trek series, at times, become a chore to watch instead of feeling compelled to watch. Strange New Worlds is simply compelling. From the captain to the surrounding characters, there's real tension, real depth. Picard still has good moments and some nice flash backs to TNG.

I highly recommend Strange New Worlds both to Star Trek fans and even just drama fans.

However, my problem is that I'm getting standard Star Trek fatigue. Many things are different Capt Pike instd of Capt Kirk, but much is the same Star Trek crapitus from the very beginning, especially the all the Federation rules/regs, how Federation values seem to always trump other cultures, and the hero-captain goes on dangerous away missions which is strategically stupid. It just makes for the same stories and outcomes, only the characters/settings are different. Technically speaking, the series is very good with great VFX and production values. However, they're still weaving in woke nonsense because they're obviously being paid to do so. Ep 7 was all about the lgbtq with its "hot" guest star. Ep 8 threw seriousness out the window with their 18th century dress-up parody where Capt Pike played against type as a gay fop. Ep 9 was the writers proclaiming "let's do an 'Alien' thing!" The season finale was a what-if ep so take it with a grain of salt. Season one is like a report card your kid gets when he's 8, good enough, passes, but doesn't meet potential, there's greatness there, but something's holding it back. It's like there's a few writers that "get it" but there's others that pull it in weird, nonsensical directions. Maybe in a year or so season two'll be better, but when recently has that been the case?! Expand

Season 2

Absolutely delighted that this stellar show has maintained its superbly high-quality production values, acting and storylines. The show remains inclusive and adaptable while avoiding preachiness or judgementalism. The threads of early Starfleet conflicts remain a prominent theme across this season, depicted in much greater depth and richness. The character development and acting continue to shine - this is a crew I can absolutely relate to and want to get to know better. The humorous moments laugh out loud while the emotional moments avoid melodrama and superfluousness. This time round it seems episodes go more in-depth into each character's original motivations and exorcise old demons that haunt them from the past. Some episodes were quite sad, of love lost in another time and universe, of unfulfilled potential. Could old hatred, and self-hate, be confronted and defeated? Once again happy to see the present Toronto depicted so charmingly. The sensitive nuanced portrayal of the terrible actual trauma of war was really amazing. All too often first-world problems are characterized as trauma, but those who have really gone through the horrors of war know what it is. Kudos to the showrunners for highlighting the terrible subject. The musical episode was a real delight. Each song was meaningful and superbly composed. The lyrics were perfect, amazing how they stitched together a space opera. I found myself strangely angry at the show for the cliffhanger ending in the final episode. The setup was so good it was quite irritating to have to wait a year for the conclusion. Season 1

A different kind of Trek show, the one I have been waiting for during this remarkable renaissance period in the Trekverse. Strange New Worlds is far less frenetic and frenzied than Discovery - there is far more introspection and character development, and far fewer oozy, bubbly moments of feel-good vapid emoting. Pike played by Anson Mount has all Kirk's swagger with Picard's philosophical leanings. He is undoubtedly a new type of captain, and the dark scythe that hangs over his destiny adds depth to his character. His true strength is his insight and instinct, seeing past logic and facts with a well-placed hunch. The rest of the crew is just stellar, Spock, Una, Chapelle, Uhura, etc - all well-developed characters with distinct personalities and nuances. I loved a return to the episodic format of old, each telling a unique story. The penultimate episode was a masterclass in space horror worthy of Alien, and a heart-wrenching forging of character. The season finale was a magnificent send-off, in the grand tradition of all excellent time travel Trek episodes. The consequences of tampering with fate, and the sacrifice for the greater good, are themes explored deeply. It was a delight to see the union of the great captain's Pike and Kirk, with their application of wit, wisdom and vision. Loved the callbacks to the beloved past. Obviously, the cliffhanger finale begs for a second season which we will fully embrace. I have to say this is the most beautiful Trek show I've seen in recent history. The previous shows of this new Renaissance seem rushed and gimmicky, but the vistas in SNW are breathtaking and singular. Extraordinary work - as Eugene Roddenberry rightly stated recently, this show would make his visionary dad proud.
