This show is rad. I enjoy the return to episodic storytelling and all that characters are interesting and fun. Ethan Peck kills it as Spock. Anson Mount as Capt Pike is fantastic. Jess Bush as Nurse Chapel is possibly my favorite. I wish the special effects weren't so muddy and "realistic." Between this and Lower Decks all the old and new Trek fans should be very happy.

Finally! Some real Star Trek. It's been nearly 2 decades since I have been able to say that I genuinely liked the direction that Star Trek was going. Strange New Worlds captures the optimism and sophistication that Trek deserves. Everything comes together for a great though imperfect representation that I'm proud to accept as Star Trek.

Pike and Spock carry over the same great chemistry from Discovery without the convoluted and awkward overarching plot. Uhura is delightful and inspiring. The Dialogue is witty and sharp. The cinematography ditches the rapid cuts and excessive lens effects of Discovery and the story lacks the stodgy stuffiness of Picard. The CG could be smoother and a few FX shots were disorienting and inconsistent. Spatial permanence and motion consistency was iffy at times but it was overall forgivable and felt more creative and faithful than recent forays into the world of Trek. The re-imagination of the Enterprise it self is my favorite redesign from the past 30 years. the story was bold and daring. Immediately relevant but not shoehorned. Over all, Good Trek, I'm looking forward to next week.
May the franchise Live long and prosper

Loved it! This is not only back to what I want from Star Trek, but it incorporates an updated feel in cast and crew that's more organic than STD or Picard (both of which failed for me). Not sure about porn Mirk yet, but we hardly know him. So far I really like the entire cast, especially the doc and nurse. Best pilot ep for a Trek show since Emissary. Trek pilots usually range from awful to meh. Anson Mount was great in Discovery, and he's just as great here. Haven't been this excited to watch a next episode since DS9. I like the newer Trek shows, Voyager, and Enterprise--but I think there might be something extra special brewing with this one.

that was the best trek show since 90s. im pretty sure there will be a lot of haters from echo-chambers, the pure fact that 21 century crisis was mentioned in ep 1 will be a trigger. maaan, did time change. now you can't have a female badass character without some incel arguing that it's 'politics'

Strongest premiere episode of any Trek season. The show could fall apart as things progress but it's strong out of the gate. I'm thinking back to literally all the pilot episodes from all the other Trek shows (The Cage for TOS, Encounter at Farpoint for TNG, The Emissary for DS9, etc) and Strange New Worlds is by far the most engaging.

For those calling this show too woke, I firmly disagree.

The episode focused on Pike. In no way was he depicted as “weak” (if anything his portrayal was fairly typical for male leads). Not so sure about Spock yet, nobody can replace Nimoy. I don’t really care for Chapel as her portrayal doesn’t match her personality at all from TOS. Also I hate “Hit it”… but besides that this is the

This is the best first episode of a ST series ever. It's great on it's own and introduces lots of characters we know and care for. The best part of it is the predictable gnashing of teeth by Right Wing Nut Jobs because there just "ain't enough white men" in it. Ignore their BS scores. This is a great start to what looks to be a great series.

As someone who still thinks that Picard and Discovery are not Trek, and shouldn't exist, I was just burned too many times so I had no expectations at all for Star Trek Strange New Worlds.

The first episode was a decent 6.5. The hamfisted "Jan 6" scene already breaks canon (Trump and Obama don't exist in canon because there was the Eugenics war in the 90's which they now set after 2024 for no reason at all). It was the best of New Trek, but other than that small moment, the episode was great.

The second episode is a solid 8.
It felt like old trek, it honored old trek, and I still don't despise a single character yet!

For those who have lost hope in all Trek, try this one out. So far, so good.

Old guy here. I loved the original series, TNG, and even Voyager. This is the first Star Trek series since that, for me, has the same vibe as those earlier series. For the record, I could barely swallow Picard season 2 (which did mostly redeem itself but not until the final episode).

"Give us more Star Trek, we love all things Star Trek!!!!" The so-called fans demand, but when they are given it, they just whine and complain and criticize every bit of it. "It isn't an exact replica of TOS!" "You are changing too much!" "That's not canon!" "They left out the racism and misogyny!" "I can't connect with any of the characters because only half of them are white males!""Give us more Star Trek, we love all things Star Trek!!!!" "They left out the racism and misogyny!" "I can't connect with any of the characters because only half of them are white males!" The new show could be the most amazing show ever created and the incel chat rooms would still find something to be offended about or nitpick.

Bottom line, don't listen to the rigid and narrow-minded trolls who can't handle anything new or different, Strange New Worlds is good. Pike is pretty much everything you want in a captain-- wise, caring, funny, dignified, compassionate, and strong. Supporting cast has a lot of potential, and Number 1 and Spock are both intriguing and competent. The show's premise and overarching plot seems like it will include the best parts of TOS, TNG, and Voyager. Don't let the immature knee-jerk haters stop you from enjoying what Strange New Worlds has to offer-- adventure, exploration, scientific advancement, contemplation of deeper philosophies and ideas, personal growth, and fun.

Absolutely fantastic Trek! It's hard to believe this show is as well written with great characters and amazing production value. NO forced woke politics so prevalent in modern shows has yet appeared in the first 4 episodes with all the characters working together as an equal crew. Truly great stuff so far.

I hate Discovery. I hate Picard. This I don't hate. I am also very confused by all the hate others are giving this comparing it to Picard and Discovery. This isn't either of those shows. Give it a few more episodes before you throw it in the trash. I did knock off a point for that awful lesbian haircut though. If the show gets worse I will update my review but so far I like it.

It appears that the last two seasons of Discovery had traumatized me somewhat. I spent the first ten minutes of the show saying “please don’t suck” over and over at the screen. People discuss their emotions and reveal backstories AFTER a life threatening event, not during. There is action, there is humor. The hints and references to “how bad things were during the 21st century” are actually subtle, the pedanticism is at about the level of TNG or TOS. Definitely watchable. Will keep following, hoping that the showrunners do not mess it up somehow. Sometimes the “tried and true” formula is what the audience wants. Expand

I am not saying that it's an excellent show but it absolutely feels like they are again concentrating on episodic exploration instead of saving the world in a 12-episode movie. It was definitely better than Picard's second season.

I love what this show is trying to be, a Trek as diverse in tone and genre as it is in cast. In execution, however, season 1 didn't quite sing. I love Anson Mount's performance in the role, but the conflicts the character has to deal with proved too big, too challenging for the show to do justice to, something we saw most prominently in the one bad episode of the season, episode 6.

But before this, I'm not sure Star Trek has ever even had a good first season. If this show becomes as much better by its third season as Trek shows usually do, it's on the path to becoming the best they've ever made. The arc they've set up for season 2 is already one I find very exciting, particularly because it's following up on one of the very best episodes of this season. I cannot wait.

EDIT: The season would have greatly improved with an episode each focused on Christine and Erica. Christine's story with Spock would've worked better if she also had a story that wasn't about Spock, and Erica's antics in the finale really needed some established backstory.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Frankly this series is very good. The two factors pulling down my rating are: a) it’s too short, and b) there are a couple of clunker episodes.
With all of that said the casting (except for Jim Kirk in the finale) is excellent. The writing in general is very good, and the production values are exceptional.
Whenever someone reviews a Star Trek series they fall into heavy comparing to their favorite series of the past. The problem there is the rose colored glasses that most reviewers wear.
TOS was not perfect, not by a long shot. But TOS gets extra credit because of the iconic characters that were created. And there are roughly a half dozen episodes that still hold up. There are MANY that were awful. And they didn’t improve with age.
Same thing with TNG. The first season was largely poor and so was a good portion of season two. But again, those iconic characters and the actors that portrayed them grew and developed into something special. And please, Gene Roddenberry was not the gifted writer/creator of shining morality that diehard fans choose to believe in. As a human being let’s just say he wouldn’t have survived the “Me Too” era. And as an executive producer he almost managed to kill TNG and the motion picture franchise until wiser heads prevailed and removed him from creative control.
This series is actually better in its first season than any other Star Trek series, ever. The acting is better, the casting is better and the stories (for the most part) are very good too.
Instead of stunt casting with legacy characters (Picard) or pandering to niche audience categories (Discovery) the show runner and series creator have made several great decisions. The stand alone episodes with clever character arcs percolating in the background, building in a connection to the past without subverting the present, and creating what feels like a collaborative and positive team on the Enterprise.
This is a character driven action series. Not the soap opera over at Discovery, or the confused jumble on Picard. And the actors are up to the task. Whether it’s a new character that dies too soon, or a wounded but talented player that displays interesting layers to her persona, this series succeeds in introducing people you care about from day one.
To get the full SNW experience you’ll need to drive into the last two or three episodes of STD season two where Una, Pike and the Enterprise are introduced. It’s a slog, I have to say, because the Discovery crew are still in many scenes, but in the end it will make your SNW journey richer.
Here’s hoping they don’t mess it up in season 2 by trying to get cute. And find a better James T Kirk.

“Strange New Worlds” is at its best in its fifth episode, which delivers more cheeky fun and short bursts of character development with economy that are more meaningful than the paragraphs of breathless character exposition found in the first four episodes.
