The casting is good enough to move the plot forward and as of now the only negative thing to say is that we can watch only one episode per week :/ Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The first few episodes of this series have been encouraging if not inspiring.

OK, to be honest, at first yet again the "stale and derivative writing" warning flags were raised with me. That was thanks to the now mandatory portrayal of a grey, dystopian future using imagery and a social construct that goes back to at least the 1970s and movies like "Soylent Green" and which has been endlessly re-worked and re-packaged over the past half-century in countless movies relating to how bad the future's going to be. Somebody needs to tell the writers that this is now very boring. It's tediously depressing - does no writer have even a grain of optimism and imagination left to enable them to set a story in a future we'd actually want to live in?

It got worse to start with. Oh dear, here we have yet another group of people imprisoned with no real memory (or records this time) as to why. How many times have we seen variations on that theme? This is explained by the fact all their computer records were wiped during a civil disturbance 140 years ago, presumably at the same time their ancesters also forgot how to write things down, remember them and to pass their history down through oral tradition. It's hardly revolutionary - humans did so for tens of thousands of years and some cultures still do so today. It's not the fact that their ancesters 140 years previously didn't do so that's really the problem, it's the fact that the guys in the silo today lament the loss of their history but not seem to be at all curious enough to ask the questions above. Maybe they've forgotten how to ask questions...

Then the final groan-inducing tendency was for many of these scenes to be shot in half-light or almost total blackness, meaning nothing can be seen other than some vague silhouhettes and often not even that. All one can deduce sometimes as to what's happening needs to be based on grunts and muffled conversations in the dark. I thought this art-movie type shooting had long been regarded as passé but it still rears its infuriating head from time to time and it does so a lot here.

Now at this stage, my perceptions started to change. That was influenced by a very well-written script, adult-level dialogue (well, mostly), some well-penned characters who were interesting and some very good acting from everyone involved. The plot line also developed nicely with some interesting scenarios outlined. They were all left hanging pending the next episode - as they should be.

This series has, in spite of its numerous annoyances that are now endemic in much TV and movie SF, caught my attention and interest.

Let's hope this continues but some of the trailers for the next episode look a little worrying. Depressingly, yet again we have grey-suited fascist-looking troops (let's call them the Empire for convenience) kicking down doors in the silo and trying to silence the heroes who are resisting and asking questions (let's call them the rebels eh?). George Lucas has a lot to answer for! On the whole though, worth watching.

Silo is an Apple TV series of the steampunk genre. Like most Apple film, Silo is of good technical quality crafted by skilled individuals. But, as I always say, "it is very difficult to buy quality creativity for any amount of money".

In the case of Silo, the writing, casting, acting, directing and editing are very good. Obviously, any film will reach only a certain portion of viewers. Silo may not be to some individuals' liking.

To me, the acting is what makes this film worth watching. I'll make a comment regarding Lonnie Rashid Lynn's (aka Common) portrayal of Robert Sims, the head of security for Judicial... which strikes me as very odd and initially I very much did not care for. But, his efforts are starting to grow on me... perhaps he is learning to act as the series progresses.

Anyway, I haven't seen all of season 1 - and, perhaps my rating is premature (which never stops professional film critics from forming an uninformed opinion). I may come back and change my rating after I have seen the last episode of season 1.

**************************************************************

I had an additional thought. I have recently written 2 reviews of films I rated highly that had a rapper for one of the lead roles. This is the second time I have said I did not like the rappers acting. There may be something about a rapper's artistic skill set that I do not understand. I'm going to self-evaluate this issue in the future.

Through its exploration of a post-apocalyptic world where humans have taken refuge in an underground silo, the show serves as a powerful metaphor for the ways in which we are often conditioned to think and perceive in our own lives.

The show raises important questions about the role of knowledge and understanding in our lives, and the importance of sorting through what is truth and what is conditioning. It encourages us to seek out truth and understanding even when it may be uncomfortable or inconvenient, and challenges us to confront the biases that shape our perceptions of the world.

The acting in "Silo" is superb, with David Oyelowo, Rashida Jones, and Rebecca Ferguson delivering standout performances that capture the nuances of their characters and draw the viewer in. The chemistry between the characters is authentic and engaging, creating a sense of investment in their individual journeys.

Overall, "Silo" is a must-watch series that delivers a powerful and thought-provoking message about the importance of sorting through truth and understanding in a world that often seems uncertain and chaotic. It's a reminder of the enduring human spirit in the face of adversity, and a call to action for us to challenge the conditioned thinking that shapes our perceptions of the world. Don't miss this deeply insightful and impactful series that is sure to leave a lasting impression on its viewers.
