This show deserves some love. It is not your typical TV show. The story is confusing from the first 3 episodes but it will grow on you as you continue. The comedy bits are funny without exaggerating. Here's hoping for season 2. Great acting from the whole cast. Lito and Sun are my favorites. Keep 'em coming!

I feel like I'm watching Cloud Atlas as a less interesting TV Show.

And the close-up on the **** shinning and dripping in female vaginal liquids, after a graphic sex scene of the two lesbians, was unnecessary and disgusting. And I have nothing against gays.

But would you show a close up of a used condom filled with semen after a man had sex? No you would not.

Ignoring the preachy heavy handed and often didactic dialogue that just had to explain every philosophy and even what sen-sates are...it still had a boring and uninteresting story.

How original; people from different background and places brought together by events in the story... like that trope hasn't been beat to death yet.

I just finished watching all 12 episodes. I had absolutely no problem following the plot.

Well shot with crap storytelling. Became a painful chore to watch at episode 3. It was not interesting and felt like they were just trying to fill the hours instead of focusing on plot and story. Each episode has at best 10 minutes of plot. More about characters breaking traditional social norms than sci-fi. Brings absolutely nothing new to the table. Was not entertained.

Dreadfully slow, with sprints of incoherent storytelling. We have the Mexico storyline, poorly acted and out of place and then the San Francisco one that just heightens what is left of any potential for the show. It is well filmed and given the locations makes it more intriguing, but not by much.

It’s got german safe-cracking, san-fran pride-parades, telepathic kick-boxing, a mexican gay telenovela, daily life in african slums, chicago crime-investigating cops, transgender hackers, bollywood dance-numbers, and psychic orgies. Yeah. Psychic orgies. And live births on screen.

It’s also the closest thing to a movie/television adaptation of Octavia Butler’s Patternist series that's been made. For those of you who aren’t familiar with Octavia Butler, she’s the only African American woman to have won the Hugo and Nebula awards for science fiction writing. As you might imagine, Octavia Butler had unique sensibilities about what a compelling science fiction story would entail; and one of the hallmarks of her storytelling is the theme of telepathy and telepaths, and her interest in issues of race and gender, which were all developed in her Seed to Harvest series. The first season of Sense8 is, very roughly speaking, a modern adaptation of Mind of My Mind, and with the Babylon 5 creator and Matrix directors at the helm, it’s obvious that this could easily be a 5+ season long arc, and go as epic as covering the entire Seed to Harvest storyline. And that’s what makes Sense8 groundbreaking sci-fi: it’s easily the best portrayal of telepaths in a sci-fi series ever made.

The first season is 12 hours long, with the first four hours devoted to our telepaths slowly getting up inside each others heads; the second four hours being something of a psychic orgy as they figure out how to communicate with each other; and the last four hours is an operatic birth of telepathically choreographed action. And the telepathic choreography they pull off is *tight*.

Sense8 is very possibly the culmination of the Wachowski’s career so far; and it’s great to see them take all the best parts from Bound, Matrix, and Cloud Atlas and incorporate it in this new series. The first season is definitely filmed with bing viewing and passive-viewing in mind. It’s Cloud Atlas meets Lost meets Heroes; with a 21st century sex-ed course mixed in; and dialed up to a 13 out of 10.

Netflix and streaming television is arguably a better medium for the Wachowskis, and maybe they should have moved over to television awhile ago. Somewhere along the way, it occurred to someone that maybe instead of spending $100M trying to recreate 2 hours of special effects as good as the Matrix, maybe they should just spend $100M on an entire season and make 12 hours of television. And whoever made that decision should get a gold star or something.

Be warned: the series starts out slow. By the Wachowski’s standards, excruciatingly slow. Yet intimately so. It’s obvious that they’re getting a chance to tell intimate stories, and do the kind of character development they’ve not had the opportunity to do before. If Cloud Atlas was a warm-up exercise; Sense8 is a 12 hour long sequel. Some people might be terrified of the prospect of sitting through a 12 hour long sequel to Cloud Atlas. But fans of shows like Lost and Heroes will feel totally at home.

By comparison, Lost went through 24 episodes before they even introduced the Dharma Initiative; and went through 96 episodes before they explained what the Incident was in it’s penultimate Season 5. So, by comparison, that Sense8 only takes 4 hours to start getting into it’s action groove is entirely reasonable. Especially when the action sequences include bullet-time effects and special effect sequences inspired by the Matrix.

Sense8 takes a smart editing technique from Cloud Atlas, in that each of it’s character’s story arc is a mini-genre. So, you’re very much getting 8 different mini-movies, interwoven with each other. The Wachowskis are pushing a new approach to storytelling using a new medium. The result of which is that the mini-movies in Sense8 provide something for everyone.

Also, Sense8 has got some of the best portrayals of LGBT characters ever done in a sci-fi series; and is radically inclusive in terms of gender and race. It's entire premise is set up as a way to discuss issues around race, sex, gender, privacy, power, and social justice.

Personally, after watching the entire first season, I'd go so far as to say that it's the Wachowski's best work since the Matrix. It's a different medium, and a different kind of story telling, so try watching it with an open mind. There are moments when it gets hokey and hippie-dippie with the "we're all connected" new-age vibe. But those are themes the Wachowski's have been exploring in almost all their movies, so it should come as no surprise.

Oh, and did I mention the psychic orgies and telepathic kickboxing?

One thing I do wish they expanded more on than they did was the main story, as they kind of left that out of most of the episodes, only rarely coming back to it, but in the last few episodes they picked up on that much more, and they also finally got characters to meet up in real life (I wonder how interacting with people will work, they should expand on that in the future seasons!)

There are some issues though, the main one being that at times, I find myself not interested in some of the stories and would rather focus on others, but the show at the very least doesn't focus too long on one story, so that is not too much of an issue most of the time, and it will generally throw something at you which makes you sit up in your chair again and go "oh crap!" It may also be a bit too slow for some people, there's a lot of talking, yet not much action, and since it's suppose to be part drama part sci-fi, you would expect more action. That being said, it once again does have great action scenes when they do happen, which do use the various characters, so that's nice.

Overall, the first season is great, and hopefully they keep this up, I can't wait to see what will happen in the future, and Netflix has once again shown what great original content that they can produce.

Only bad part is if you're not comfortable with in your face homosexuality. It doesn't bother me (don't enjoy it myself , so I just look away).

But you do have to come in with some suspension of disbelief in the sci-fi and plot elements, which make little sense on their own. But as a vehicle to get these diverse characters talking to and supporting one another, it makes perfect sense. I hope they continue this into Season 2, so some of the broader plot elements can be resolved, but if not, it still makes for riveting television. Expand

Great idea. Many of the characters in the series caused a bit slower development of the story.
In general I am satisfied with the way the series is done.
The biggest objections were too many main characters in the series, and it seems to me that the end of the season was done in a last resort.
However, highly recommended series, and I repeat great idea.

That said, I like the fact that each character is given time to develop. This is also science fiction with a very complex story line. It is an excellent series to binge watch. The slow start is due to the series looking at 8 individuals plus Darryl Hannah.

The locations and photography are amazing.

This could have been a good story with 100% of the sex and sexuality parts of it removed. In most places across the globe since sex is a private thing and for the most part devoid of thought and conversation, it will never serve to advance a fiction story. Kissing and fading to black is fine. Heck, even lying in bed naked talking is fine. If you're a believe in nothing belongs in a story that doesn't advance a character or plot, sex scenes never serve to do this and rarely do, even when they're enjoyable. I can always watch porn for those things. Heck, why don't Hollywood movie directors try their hand at porn every once in a while if they want to make sex beautiful?

Not sure if another season needs to exist as it is. I'd pull it a bit more down to Earth and make the plot and story more concrete and maybe it can work. I'm not sure if vagueness and mystery can carry a show on throughout the years.

Sense8 is a truly ambitious TV series with a premise that is tantalizing enough to get any person to sit down and ask for more. To start with the good aspects of the show we will cover just how vast the giant web of Sense8 really is.
It follows the lives of 8 people who are psychically linked and reveals the lives of those that live within this cluster. The show does a great job of building plot suspense without solely relying on flashy action and life or deal situations to create the suspense. You constantly want to know more because Sense8's plot is incredibly withholding for the first few episodes. It leaves you in the dark just as it leaves the characters in the dark. This really helps you understand the confusion and the emotion of the characters because you are in the same place as they are. You are no more privy to answers than they are.
Next, the web of characters creates a satisfying and intriguing dynamic that allows you to enter each character's life for a brief amount of time each episode. This means you get the character's story in nice digestible sections rather than long drawn out narratives. Not only is the approach a fresh idea, but the way the movie was shot is incredibly beautiful. The tailoring of these stories is sewn together with golden thread because the cinematography really is quite striking and makes the transition from characters, which is usually a jolting process, an agreeable and almost natural feeling.
Enough cannot be said about how beautiful this series is shot. It certainly helps that there are 8 unique environments as familiar as the streets of US city like Chicago and as foreign as the slums of Nairobi, Kenya. It gives the show a shifting and changing flavor that never goes stale. One minute you are in London or Soul or Mexico City and yet the environments remain comfortable. It is once again a sign of the outstanding direction of this series that as a viewer you are comfortable within each and every setting that you find yourself in and really mirrors the essence of the show, which is that these 8 people are profoundly connected despite their stark differences.
This is leads to one of the best parts of this show. The way it really lets its message of inter-connectedness sink in not by telling you, but by showing you and making you feel it. This profound link between the 8 strangers is not bogged down in listless dialogue or vast amounts of explanatory narrative, but is shown through the small, rich moments between the characters and the stunning cinematography that really allows your to feel what a character is feeling rather than be told it.
Now, for the bad things. I would say that the worst part about the show for me was the pacing. I wanted to know more and I wanted it now. However, the show is brilliantly and frustratingly mysterious. It is easy to see why critics did not respond to being shown the first 3 episodes, because the main narrative remains clouded until half way through the season. Now, this wouldn't be so bad except it also took some time to get the individual character story liens off the ground as well. It was like watching a space shuttle take off. The flames were burning and the smoke was pillowing out from under the shuttle, but it took what seemed like years for the show to lift off.
I will agree with a lot of people that the characters can be a little static at some points. They do seem to all fit into a certain niche or category. Will being the cop who tries to save everyone and all around acts like a paragon. Wolfgang, the guy with an bad boy attitude who is struggling with inner demons. However, I will say that many of the characters do break out of their shell by the end of the season. So, all in all, the fact that some of the characters felt a little stale was a problem until the show started to progress.
While the first season is around a whole 24 hours of screen time, I feel the background of the characters is really lacking. Much of the background for the characters was developed in the last episode of the season. A lot of the backgrounds prior to that episode remained unknown or progressing at a rate too slow to keep total interest. While this acts as a mystery that makes you want more it is an annoyance at times.

This show has something very special about it. But before I get there I will propose my theory as to why there seems to be such a divide on the reviews.

I believe people are afraid of the characters. There are lesbians, transgenders, and gays. People argue on here that this show is a "diversity campaign" and that this message "has been received long ago." Even if the show pushes these topics too heavily, it is still a message that needs to be sent because it obviously hasn't been very well received. I believe people can't get past their own beliefs and opinions and see the incredible-ness of this show. Also, several of the negative reviews even admit to only watching the pilot or a couple episodes. Another person even mentioned the show doesn't do any flashbacks like Lost did and therefore there is no character development. This person obviously didn't watch more than a couple episodes, if that, as there are several flashbacks and character development. Now why would anyone who disliked a show so quickly feel the need to share their negative thoughts about it, and sometimes in a very harsh tone? Most likely do to something about it striking them in such a direct way that it contradicted their own beliefs and values. The result: negative reviews based on personal feelings of misunderstanding, fear, and potentially, hate.

I'll admit that some of these things were a bit tough for me handle at first, but I grew past those misplaced negative opinions that society pushed on me and accepted the characters for the people and human beings that they actually are. And, most importantly, even if I still don't fully understand these things that bothered me, I did not allow it to override my judgement on the quality of the show. (which is freaking awesome, btw)

    Reasons I love Sense8:

#1: It connects you to the characters better than any show I've seen. This is done primarily through the psychic connection of the 8 main characters by showing you how they work together and help each other out when the need arises most, sharing skills and knowledge along the way. Simply ingenious and amazing.

#2: It's unapologetic. Yes, it throws a strap-on **** the transgender lesbians were using right in your face directly at the beginning. It's shouting out, "Yes, we are different, but we are not ashamed and will not hide our true selves!" It takes that huge elephant in the room (due to one of the creators being transgender) and throws it out in the open for everyone to see, getting it out of the way and the show can move on. She may be transgendered now, but that took some balls!

#3 Fight and action scenes. These are the Matrix siblings after all, and they don't let us down.

#4 It moves at a very good pace, not to slow and not too fast. Almost like a murder mystery novel. You wouldn't want all the secrets to be given to you in the first few chapters, but just enough to keep you interested and guessing. Sense8 does this, and balances it quite perfectly. I also really like how the "bad guy" is still the biggest mystery of all. Makes for really good anticipation.

    #5 Acting is spot on.

That's currently my top 5, and I'm to come up with more reasons I love the show later. I created this account to help get the message out about how great this show is because I want to see it continue.

So, do yourself a favor, let go of any societal doubts casted upon you in the past, and enjoy this very well done sci-fi fantasy drama!

And the villain, ok, that looked like a grandpa from Connecticut or some professor trying to be break-bad all of a sudden, (Paging Walter White, Paging Heisenberg....). Just come on, gives us a super villain, hell my in-laws are better villains than that guy.

But overall, I think it has promise, hopefully the 2nd season will be better.

Wow, Wachowskis. I have never seen a movie or TV like this, in this format, although I gather it is like anime, which they are huge fans of. It is art, as in the viewer is allowed to participate, and allowed not to like it; it is not trying too hard to be a hit, as, for the most part, formula has been left behind (but some small bit in the last episodes). During the first few episodes, I couldn't figure out whether I should keep watching or not, then read some reviews here, and hard to believe the positive ones. But, in the end, yes, best character driven sci-fi since the Battlestar Gallactica reboot (but lighter) and incredibly inspiring. Wonderfully shot and paced (believe it or not, just stay with it). Everything balances out. Fewer/shorter action scenes than I would expect (esp since I just watched their Jupiter Ascending). When the final Season 1 episode ended, I felt like I had just seen a 12 hr movie, and the story arc points to that. Sure, there are 'flaws', but one diamond's flaw is another's brilliance. I love that they used Beethoven's Emperor Concerto (Concerto No. 5) throughout much of the season, as it is so brilliant yet so overlooked and so emotional. Many great songs are used to perfect effect. Not every episode and not when you'd expect it, but just enough, like all else. Did I mention great acting, no melodrama, and superb story? Can't wait for Season 2, and I hope there is one! Expand

Plus, having such a diverse cast, but more importantly, such a diverse characters, representing the point of view from each culture and each own way of thinking will definitely appeal to a huge audience, who might be attracted by the idea and the cast, but will definitely stay because of the story.

Definitely worth watching, to the level that you might finish it in less than 2 days. Can´t wait for next season!

The strongest in my opinion is the female Korean, but they all have strong merit and purpose in the story. It also runs the gamut on sexuality with both a male gay couple and a transgender woman with a woman partner. It is not strictly a gay story though, the heterosexual relationships have just as much weight. It is also willing to touch on many taboo topics. If the sight of a tampon grosses you out, you may want to prepare yourself. But surprisingly it's not used for shock value aimed at the viewer but a part of the story. It's the best example I can think of to describe the obvious and sometimes overboard attempts of the shows creators to break new ground. There are stereotypes, poetic license, and clichés, but as a whole the show manages to come together on a new level that I think future shows will strive to replicate. It brought me a new understanding of different cultures: Korean, Indian, Kenyan, German, British and even my own American culture. The sci-fi story is secondary to the importance of the characters and I think that fact is what made me love this show so much. I very much hope it will return for a second season and more, but even if it lasts only one I'm glad I had the opportunity to watch it. Expand

Legitimately the best thing to come out of The Wachowskis since The Matrix. Better I'd say. Great action, interesting, believable characters. Honestly, if pressured to find a weak point, the +2 minute opening feels weird.

Thank you Netflix! Such a refreshing change from the usual mindless, perfectly balanced shows that we get a dozen of every year. It's not a perfect show, there are pacing issues and a lack of true story depth but it is engaging and allows me to put on a different mental hat to watch it.

It begins very slow and it felt confusion elsewhere. But.. the story improves EP after EP, It made me realize that whoever is behind this series is a genius! Character development is insane and the plot sequences to support character roles are well-managed. Great actors as well! A sci-fi themed series always amaze me but this one is just greatly crafted/conceptualized.

Oh, and they are being hunted because of this.

This premise creates a relatively interesting story that will undoubtedly be filled with various plot holes and things that can simply be described as stupid. And I feel that Sense8 is exactly this: it is interesting, yet filled with holes.

Some of the strong points of this season is that it is filled with interesting characters with fascinating character developments. The comedy, the action, the politics, and multitude of protagonists, and the unique presentation gives this show an artistic flair that I don't see too often. It is an honestly intriguing series that I find entertaining, that that is why I would give it a solid 8/10.

But yeah, some areas are blatantly stupid. Sometimes it seems as though the motivations and feelings of each of the protagonists are disjointed, where there is just no plausible reason for them to help each other at any given time, or do what they need to do. Some characters are helplessly emotional one moment, and ridiculously assertive the next, or simply both simultaneously.

All said and done though, it was entertaining enough to recommend it, and I do look forward to seeing the next season.

Because yes, during 7 episode, nothing happens exepect in their individual story, and i think it's a bit to much to waste 7 episode out of 12 only to setup the background. It's (i think) a bit to much LGBT friendly, which is not bad, i have nothing against, but it's like everywhere all the time, it's like a big propaganda and sometimes it's useless...

The writing was a little campy sometimes, mainly the Nomi and Aminata's scenes, I just couldn't get over how campy their love was, but it was love regardless, so I put up with it because they're both so badass. There was a lot things about how the senate's connections work that were hard to understand at first, but by the end of the season, once we saw it in action, there was no denying how cool this show is, and how much potential it has as a series.
