The whimsical elements blend well with the dark undertones within the story. There is really no dull moment as compared to the anime which sometimes feels like a challenge to get through. They do well in following the source material to a T.

Incredible. I've always been a One Piece lover and was scared to death that they were going to screw it up. They didn't, awesome. The actors, impressive, the rhythm of the story, great, the action scenes, more than acceptable and how it has recreated the universe in general is incredible. The only thing I hope is that seasons with the same quality continue to come out.

This was my first contact with the franchise, so no comparison. The plot issues are distracting and the main character's backstories drag enough to make me loose patience with it. I stopped paying attention by episode 3 - it was playing on the background until the end. It has a fun and silly energy that made me smile though.

The respect for the show is there, the story is not 1:1, but that's ok as long as they respect the characters origin. After I watched the 2 first episodes at a friends home I paid for my 1st Netflix sub. If we get more seasons, which I hope, please don't to a Witcher on us. Thank you.

Edit: Just finished the show and I must say of all the fails I imagined to happen this surely was on the list, but somehow Netflix pulled it off. The actors really give their all, be it the main crew or side chars. Especially Buggy is a joy to watch. The respect towards the original work is present. Kudos to everyone involved. It's not perfect but for LA One Piece, it's incredible how close it gets.

I’ve been watching anime since the 80’s but never seen One Piece or read the manga, and attempts of live action anime, are almost always terrible - so I was cautious.
That said, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed this from episode 2 onwards. Looking forward to more.

OP has great characters, an infectious energetic and positive Main Character or MC as we call them in our little weeb world and the right mindset of wanting to tell a good story over all the nonsense that plagues modern media these days.

    The Good

I cannot stop feeling charged up every time the MC yells over the top of his lungs, or says it with quiet resolve "I will be the King of the Pirates." Luffy is one character that has always aluded me in my anime watches, the anime show's color palate was always a little too psychedelic for my enjoyment so I never got around to watching it. But in retrospect I think it works out well, Nami, Sanji, Zoro, Usopp, Buggy Grandpappy Garp and most of the extended cast were amazing to experience for the first time. After the Live action show I even tried to go back to the anime and see if my taste has imporved, but even though I knew what was going on the color was still a little too in my face, and now I fully admit after all these years of shunning OP, this was a 'Me' problem.

Buggy was my favourite character in all of the show, and I am glad we are going to be seeing more of him, since I am not well versed with the story line I do not know if he joins the gang but I would like to see him as a returning character. The character was brought to life with a surprising amount of menace and silliness that somehow works. All in all, the slightly realistic feel of the Live action seems to have done wonders for my appreciation for one of the legendary anime I have all these years left untouched, however as Netflix tends to cancel good shows I will pray to the heavens that they realize they have a very serious contender in the OPLA to keep viewers around for a long long time, I will be one to stick around as well.

    The Bad

Very little here is what I would call bad, a few nitpicks here and there, one stand out of 'could be done better' was Luffy's Gum Gum powers, they keep going into the uncanny valley at times. But it seems to work with the not taking things seriously vibe that the show generally caries, still, a little more in the effects department, maybe a blend of practical and cgi will work wonders.

    Conclusion
I can happy call myself a One Piece fan finally after more than a decade of being an Anime fan, the story of One Piece is finally begin for me and I will try and not spoil myself either through manga or the anime so I can experience this through the Live Action medium which is a shock to me considering the failures of LA anime's we have been served in the past.
The curse is hopefully finally broken.

Good cast, good acting, decently compressed the plot (they had to because early One Piece takes a loooooong time until things get going). What kills this for me is how ridiculously low budget the sets, props, the fights and especially the characters look. They look like first time cosplayers, not kidding. One piece has many of the most colourful characters in manga/anime. Really really a shame and a wasted potential.

When I first saw the early screenshots and teasers for this project I'll admit, I did clown on it a bit and I was skeptical, "One Piece" being more over the top and absurdist than "Cowboy Bebop," and THAT live action adaptation completely flopping… I’ve never been happier to be wrong. My cynicism was completely dashed, and my expectations were absolutely blown away!

In this version of "One Piece," we go through a more streamlined version of the story, speed running through most of the East Blue Saga, with all the most important elements of each arc carefully executed with slight nods to some of the more "disposable" portions of the arcs. Some liberties were taken with certain characters and fight scenes but everything important was front ‘n’ center and was well executed.

I have way too much to say about this series, so I think I'll just condense a few of my likes and dislikes into a list:

    Things I liked:

    - All of the sets are beautiful, namely the Baratie.

    - The Wanted Posters: Every time a new Pirate character is introduced to the story, their wanted poster appears in front of them, and they destroy it, breaking the fourth wall a bit. It was a neat touch.

    - Buggy's character: My GOD this guy (Jeff Ward) knocked it outa the park! He was funny and intimidating. I think I liked him better than the original Buggy.

    - Dracule Mihawk's character: Another stand out. His actor (Steven John Ward) portrays the character perfectly!

    Things I dislike:

    - Luffy's Devil Fruit powers looked bad more often than not. Though, human stretching powers have a reputation for looking bad in live action.

    - Shanks' character: His actor (Peter Gadiot) just kinda fell flat for me. No where near as charming as the Anime version

    - Arlong's overall design: Dude was way too small, he's supposed to be a behemoth and he was barely taller than Luffy.

    - The near bastardization of Garp's character: Not only reducing “The Hero of the Marines” to a mere Saturday morning cartoon villain but going way overboard (pun intended) with his involvement in this saga.

Live action "One Piece" is great for long time fans and folks who have never seen the series before. 7/10, EASILY one of the best live action anime adaptations of an Anime.

Not a fan of the original anime, but this series just works: absurd comedy and drama about pirates and agents fighting for one last treasure. The action is memorable, the characters are funky, and they don't try to reinvent them.

What we wanted for a live action adaptation? cool fights? nuclear explossions? There is only one right answer. We want characters. For example when nami told Luffy she hates pirates, on just a second gives so much info on the character than anime nami could on the whole orange town arch (and one piece its a great anime for sure). And this goes to the fights too. (Btw love see more of nami fighting. On later arcs she became quite powerful by her own right so is cool on this reimagination to see more from her on the beggining). From Luffy like just playing and toying with his oponents to zoro, always serious but like his oponents not worthy of him while nami giving her absolute best. Its amazing how the fights are not only fan service but also character work that push the story forward.
One piece again becomes the standard now for what you have to do to make a cool live adaptation of already cool anime.
