Summary: Oliver is born in poverty to an unwed mother and is soon orphaned. He grows up in a workhouse, eating gruel and performing back breaking work. He is eventually sold to an abusive undertaker. Oliver runs away to London where he meets a young thief, The Artful Dodger.
