This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It appears my low expectations have been exceeded in the worst way. As of episode 4, Vader is now acting out of character, Obi-wan is a coward, and Leia now necessarily must have some Deus-ex mind wipe, or else break canon. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I had so much hope for this show since obi Wan has been my favorite character since I was a child. Unfortunately it proved to be just another attempt by Disney to break down a well loved character. The man took down two sith apprentices plus grievous but somehow is a shambling mess when faced with a new strong female villain. The villain herself wasn't the greatest actress but atleast she had more of the empire/sith mindset. Somehow the other inquisitors have a moral code when it comes to kidnapping children, when we all know the empire is evil and will stop at nothing to finish off the jedi even if it means destroying entire planets. The chase scene in the second episode felt like I was watching a power rangers episode.it was plain to see her tiny legs couldn't run so how do the writers make up for it? "Oh just have them wave their arms around and run into objects they could clearly see in advance". I know it was a chase involving a six year old Leia but this is where good writing can save you. It just feels like Disney doesn't understand star wars or its characters mentalities or even cares to. It shows with the sequels and is now showing again with Kenobi. The Mandolorian was such a breathe of fresh air. Unfortunately this show is like getting sucked back under the waves Expand

I can't fault the cringey acting because what did these poor actors have to work with? The directing and shots make you scratch your head or burst out laughing. If you have fond childhood memories of watching the original Star Wars trilogy or even episodes I - III, stay away from this series. If you embrace the awfulness of the show you'll find it highly entertaining. Expand

What an utter dissapointment. The character of Obi-Wan had been turned into a cowardly, inept, dottering fool for the most contrived of reasons. Every aspect of the show, with perhaps the exception of the music, is genuinely poor. I shan't delve into spoilers, but needless to say it is best avoided for anyone who cares about Star Wars.

Much has already been written about the writing and directing, which can alternate between adequate and surprisingly poor. And, to be sure, a good amount of that criticism is warranted. This series may well leave you wondering how a limited run title with this much legacy, fan support and budget could come out feeling so undercooked. Yes, some of the plot points and dialog are weak. Yes, some of the action sequences and editing choices are puzzling bordering on laughable. Yes, some of the special effects look like they never received their finishing touches. All of that is on display, but the worst offense in the series "Obi-Wan Kenobi" is how it handles its namesake.

In this series, the venerable Jedi is now a deeply fearful man, consumed with regret, who has lost seemingly all of the calm dedication and martial prowess that was his hallmark for literally every other film and television series featuring him up to this point. The knight who unflinchingly stood against Sith Lords, bounty hunters, literal armies of opposition and Darth Vader himself, is now seemingly incapable of anything more than trading some blaster fire and running for his life in between panic attacks.

We are supposed to understand that in the 10 years since his last film appearance, Obi-Wan has cut of all connection to the Force, ceased any form of training and has simply been hiding out -- thus, we are to believe, his jarring ineffectiveness. He even tells a potential ally that all hope is lost; that they should lay low in perpetuity, effectively doing nothing to help anyone. But this character re-write doesn't actually work when we consider that A) Kenobi's mission - which he has been quietly awaiting - is to train a young Luke Skywalker as a Jedi B) he, Kenobi, has been given additional skills to hone from Master Yoda in preparation for the years ahead and C) such a meek surrender to tyranny and evil goes against everything we've known about the character for roughly 40 years now. It's an ill-conceived cop out from the writing room that just doesn't convince.

By the third episode, when the former Jedi is called upon to summon at least a glimpse of the skill and valor that he demonstrated so routinely years before, there is almost nothing there. It's not so much a decline as it is a complete re-fashioning of the character for the sake of villain fan service.

    What a waste. (Subscription cancelled).

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The first episode was fine. It was slow, but it was showing the drudgery of Obi-Wan's life now. The flashes of Luke were nice, and I liked Leia (minus the ridiculous chase scene).
They tied to establish Reva early as the most ruthless, driven, and cleverest of The Inquisitors. They did this with horrid writing, no consistency, and exceedingly poor acting. Petulance and a resting **** face does not convey the menace that the writers and Moses Ingram seem to think it does.
The second episode was horrendous. Full of plot conveniences and "just becauses" that would embarrass the writers of The Rise of Skywalker.

The entire rescue was preposterous. The Leia chase scene in this one made the one in Ep 1 look like high cinema but lasted a full 10 minutes. We got Reva being petulant again and contradicting and defying her Sith (in all but name) commander and suffering no repercussions. Then we get Batman Reva observing the city from a rooftop with the RBF still firmly in place at the right place at precisely the right time to catch up to Leia and Obi, then a laughably bad force enabled parcor dash to intercept. She ends up extracting Kenobi's new location from a fake Jedi using her super, totally better than Kylo's, information extractor mind power in about five seconds (this powerful ability is why the Inquisitors tolerate her insubordination it is explained) So why did she not use it on Owen in Ep 1? Kenobi was literally 20 feet away.
She is confronted again by the Grand Inquisitor, the same character that appears in the Show "Star Wars Rebels" as the main antagonist set four or five years after these events (Star Wars Canon), but he cops an attitude so Reva runs him through.
Anyway, Reva finds Kenobi. She dialogs that Vader is alive, and therefore Anakin is alive. I won't judge this as harshly as others. I know Vader killed anyone that knew this secret, but maybe she saw him in the temple during Order 66, we'll see. If that is not how she knows, yea this is horrible and completely breaks the lore.
Ewan's reaction to this news is the best moment of acting in this show by a country mile. This was a very good moment.
Surprise to no one, Leia and Kenobi manage to escape again and Reva is left on the platform hurling threats at the departing ship and throwing a hissy fit with the RBF still firmly in place.

Anakin is my favorite character and Obi_Wan is not far behind, so despite many, many Disney Star Wars misgivings, I was excited about "Obi-Wan Kenobi". I hope it gets better, but I got a bad feeling about this.

To start, Ingrams character is not interesting, not believable and terribly over-acted. In hard contrast, the second sister from the Jedi:Fallen Order was also a powerful woman of color but her char was an awesome design, dark brooding and believable. Sith are famous for their iconic over-the top designs and you have the three inquisitors, a crazy bald sharp-tooth sinister grand-inquisitor, some kind of crazy glowing-eyed sci-fi samaurai and the third sister .. looks like they literally just pulled someone off the street and put a black leather top on them. Like give her some eye shadow or some eye effects or something to make her look like an actual sith and not just a pretender. Then when they try to make her look cool they are like doing over the top unnecessary jumps that make her look more like a carnival performer than a sith.

Secondly we have Leias char, played by a 9 year old pretending to be a 10 year old who looks like a 6 year old. Children are classically annoying in film as they are not as experienced as their older counterparts, which is why they are most often portrayed by older actors. She's just not interesting or believable. Sure she's cute and that is fine for a minor role as a cute little girl, not as a lead trying to carry the show. So far there is no reason I can see why they couldent have jumped ahead 15 years instead of 10 and shown Leia as a cool teenager played by more mature actor with talent to carry the show and able to maintain a more brooding tone to keep with the rest of the show.

Then you look at the whole show, it doesn't know what its trying to do. Its got dark brooding adult elements, it turns into a silly comedy at times, and during Leias scenes it becomes like a lighthearted children's show. Its trying to do too many things at once and has no clear underlying element to hold it all together.

McGregors scenes are well done and exactly what I expected. If they gave him more development and focused on him IN HIS OWN SHOW while only briefly showing these no-name actors, the show could have been great. It still has potential hypothetically if the untalented no name actors take a backseat and let Obi have his show. Unfortunately it is unlikely the whole direction will take a hard turn for the last 2/3. Somehow I doubt that Ice Cube is going to come in and focus the show.

Ewan McGregor was last seen as Obi-Wan, he brings more depth, more of a world-weary wisdom to the role. ... As is the case with many a “Star Wars” title, the dialogue sometimes borders on the corny, but director Deborah Chow (“The Mandalorian”) has a keen sense of pacing and a distinct visual style that holds our interest even in the quieter moments. “Obi-Wan Kenobi” is off to a roaring start.
