    There’s so much more to explore far beyond the outcome of the crime, but Kiri ultimately sets that aside to make room for a mystery whose final reveal is far less interesting than the exploration of emotional fallout that came before it.

The ultimate if only question in the business of being custodian of children in foster care is: "Will they be safe?" Sarah Lancashire is great at showing us the outcome when one of the children under her care goes missing and killed. Less satisfactory is the usual "who did it?" plot twists, replete with teasers and the inevitable "surprise" ending. It's pretty gritty and there are no heroes here, just too flawed humans.
