Thorne seems compelled by the central mystery of his story to make them enigmatic, but they end up feeling not quite like flawed flesh-and-blood people. It’s a minor weakness, though, in a series that achieves so much. Kiri, a gripping drama, also takes some of the most loaded subjects in contemporary culture and widens the debate around them.

Kiri, like its predecessor, is both brisk and illuminating, providing compassionate and honest character studies.

Ultimately, Kiri is an admirably executed story of confusion, emotion, and consequence, though not without a handful of fumbles.

There’s so much more to explore far beyond the outcome of the crime, but Kiri ultimately sets that aside to make room for a mystery whose final reveal is far less interesting than the exploration of emotional fallout that came before it.

The ultimate if only question in the business of being custodian of children in foster care is: "Will they be safe?" Sarah Lancashire is great at showing us the outcome when one of the children under her care goes missing and killed. Less satisfactory is the usual "who did it?" plot twists, replete with teasers and the inevitable "surprise" ending. It's pretty gritty and there are no heroes here, just too flawed humans.
