    This show is less about a kidnapping than about the perils of being a Social Worker given impossible responsibilities in a system riddled with unknowns. The ultimate if only question in the business of being custodian of children in foster care is: "Will they be safe?" Sarah Lancashire is great at showing us the outcome when one of the children under her care goes missing and killed.     Thorne seems compelled by the central mystery of his story to make them enigmatic, but they end up feeling not quite like flawed flesh-and-blood people. It’s a minor weakness, though, in a series that achieves so much. Kiri, a gripping drama, also takes some of the most loaded subjects in contemporary culture and widens the debate around them.
