-THE ROBOT- for all real fans of the show the Robot was the favourite non human character and was an essential part of the story. Even the cheap looking robot shell looked amazing growing up and the voice is iconic. To change this so much is a let-down. Yes the new Robot looks great, but it is not THE ROBOT.
Dr. Smith - new actor/actress needed - there is non of the humour or even villain-like character of the original Dr. Smith.
Space scenes needed for some of the episodes. They are not always on a Canadian looking planet.
The ending music is great - using part of the original theme - just hyped up a little.
There must be a second season, but what made the original LOS so awesome was not the paper cutouts, it was the spirit and the acting and the fun that the actors clearly had in making it..

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It's hard to rate a show that is half made around children or young adults. Because you know that the acting might not be mature enough. And it's a bit of the case here...The story is kind of straightforward, I mean we all know the basic premise. That said the Doctor Smith is a hit and miss. Very good in the end, really ordinary before that...The actions is somewhat non existent. There are little bits here and there but maybe not enough. I like the tension with the other Jupiter crews. I like the relationships problems in the Robinson couple. I think there was a real tension problem with the main villain, maybe because she was not the real thing. The robot side was really new and I think it should have been more exploited. Way before the last episode...Sadly they missed on that opportunity. Yes, it's a story more related to survival, but the tension was sap away from the fact that you knew the Robinson would always survived anything. That said the role of Don West was absolutely delicious. And Angela wasn't that bad...I think the role of the robot wasn't deep enough. It's lack of proper communication was daunting and made the story difficult to belief. I give the series a 72%. It's a fair beginning worth watching. Hopefully it will get better. Expand

It was the excellent production design that won me over... the ship, the vehicles, the uniforms all look really good. The robot is extremly good looking as well. In terms of storytelling and character development, there is still room for improvement. I binged the first 8 episodes within 2 days, the rest follows today...

I think the role of Dr. Smith with Parker Posey was miscast. The robot storyline, where you finally kind of warm up to this new interpretation, is OK overall. The constant switching of good robot, bad robot was annoying, even though it happened somewhat in the original series. I'm not sure I like where the storyline is going at the end of episode 10...reminds me of Star Trek Voyager...and their robot is currently MIA. Surely they'll have to find a friendly civilization or a pod of friendly robots to help them. In the original Dr. Smith was odd, campy, and self-serving but at least he wasn't inherently insane or evil like the current Parker Posey character. Expand

There are certainly flaws with this show, not least that the Robinson children seem to single handedly cause half the problems/deaths in the back half of the season, but everyone's okay with that because they're the show's central characters. But it's easy to forget weaknesses in characters when you've got such a fun show to watch. Molly Parker does a grand job playing the show's lead, and the production team have done an excellent ob creating an immersive environment. There's also an excellent score to back all this up. Lost in Space is not televisual gold. But it's good enough to be a fun watch. Expand

In this update, the Robinsons are part of a colony ship on their way to a new solar system because Earth is in a bad way. Stuff happens and they crash on a plant. More stuff happens and they're rescued. Stuff keeps happening and they bump into more survivors. Stuff happens to them too, and because there's more of them the stuff that happens just escalates to another level. That there are more survivors gives the show a chance to breathe and expand the story out from each episode having to neatly tie things up every week. There are flashback sequences that fill in character backgrounds and lay seeds that will be developed in further seasons, it's not all as straight-forward as it seems.

There are enough ideas and things happening to propel things without too much sagging, which is a problem with a lot of series which have a story spread over 10 episodes. The mid-season malaise doesn't seem as deep with LiS and things build towards a season finale that has me wanting more.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The original LIS was one of my favorite shows for years, both in its original run and reruns. It was melodramatic, and later got silly and campy; but the first season was an exciting Sci-Fi adventure show.

Many of the comments and critics panning the show speak to its lucky coincidences, inaccurate science, "dumb" character motivations and actions etc.

But the fact is that these characteristics were part of the original show as well--particularly the lucky coincidences. There's definitely room for improvement with respect to plot and character; but frankly they captured many of the elements that made the original series captivating to me as a child. I enjoyed the developing relationships among the characters, and I thought the family dynamic was well represented and believable. Yes, the science was wrong in many cases (e.g., when trapped in the tar, it would be physically impossible to lift that hatch--in the same way you can't open a car door in a submerged vehicle; the outside pressure would never allow it), and supposed scientific geniuses sometimes aren't very smart (e.g. Dr. Maureen can't figure out how to tell if someone pretending to be a physicist Ph.D is lying; why not ask about Maxwell's equations, or thesis work?), but the action was plentiful and enough new questions and surprises kept coming up to keep it all entertaining.

Maybe that does suggest it's really only suitable for young children; but I found it nostalgic in a way that made me want to stick with it. I'm looking forward to a season 2...hopefully!

Special effects are excellent. Did have problem with it supposedly getting so cold so fast that it froze the water but not the people exposed to the open air.

Aside from the overwrought, hyperbolic and incessant music (reminiscent of the terrible Star Trek movie soundtracks of the 80's), it's a dark but harmless remake of the campy original. At its worst, Lost is a weak, cliché of script and uninspired plot-twists, but it's generally saved by good, fun stories and fantastic, ILM-worthy effects and scenery.

    __________

I want to address some of the negative reviews regarding "pc" and "leftist ideology." As a conservative I didn't find an ounce of politics in the show - and zero political correctness. One review said that the men are portrayed as weak - yet the opposite is true. The father is a military veteran and is the strongest character. He fights to protect his family and is willing to sacrifice himself to save them. We all know how the pc crowd believes masculinity is toxic. Especially white masculine men. This is not the case in this show. The father is portrayed positively. They even shown how the fathers role in the family is important.

Another topic coming up in the negative reviews is the wife "emasculating the husband." This is ridiculous. They have disagreements like all couples. If you watch the show long enough you'll see why they are arguing. Eventually they resolve their differences, rekindle their love.

My advice is to ignore the negative reviews written by those sensitive alt-right snowflakes, butthurt because the show has SOME minorities and SOME women in charge. The world is a diverse place and some people need to get over it.

I also didn't find the kids annoying, except for maybe Penny a little; she was definitely the weakest in terms of character development and in terms of useful skills. My biggest problem with the series was a few of the situations which make no sense. Either the situations are implausible or the characters make choices that are hard to believe intelligent people would make. There are a solid 3-4 of these at least and they all really break immersion. The show is pretty enjoyable otherwise. I'm really disappointed that other reviewers have criticized the diversity of the cast or the presence of strong women. These are great qualities for a film to have. The family is believable (many real families are blended, have half or step siblings) and I disagree that the men are weak. Not every man prefers a weak woman. The parents in the show are both strong and that really gives their marriage a partnership feel. Expand

Posey plays the role with a gravity that encourages the show to orbit her, eccentrically, whenever she’s in view. The dynamic exemplifies the awkwardness of this muddled update.
