-THE ROBOT- for all real fans of the show the Robot was the favourite non human character and was an essential part of the story. Even the cheap looking robot shell looked amazing growing up and the voice is iconic. To change this so much is a let-down. Yes the new Robot looks great, but it is not THE ROBOT.
Dr. Smith - new actor/actress needed - there is non of the humour or even villain-like character of the original Dr. Smith.
Space scenes needed for some of the episodes. They are not always on a Canadian looking planet.
The ending music is great - using part of the original theme - just hyped up a little.
There must be a second season, but what made the original LOS so awesome was not the paper cutouts, it was the spirit and the acting and the fun that the actors clearly had in making it..

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It's hard to rate a show that is half made around children or young adults. Because you know that the acting might not be mature enough. And it's a bit of the case here...The story is kind of straightforward, I mean we all know the basic premise. That said the Doctor Smith is a hit and miss. Very good in the end, really ordinary before that...The actions is somewhat non existent. There are little bits here and there but maybe not enough. I like the tension with the other Jupiter crews. I like the relationships problems in the Robinson couple. I think there was a real tension problem with the main villain, maybe because she was not the real thing. The robot side was really new and I think it should have been more exploited. Way before the last episode...Sadly they missed on that opportunity. Yes, it's a story more related to survival, but the tension was sap away from the fact that you knew the Robinson would always survived anything. That said the role of Don West was absolutely delicious. And Angela wasn't that bad...I think the role of the robot wasn't deep enough. It's lack of proper communication was daunting and made the story difficult to belief. I give the series a 72%. It's a fair beginning worth watching. Hopefully it will get better. Expand

It was the excellent production design that won me over... the ship, the vehicles, the uniforms all look really good. The robot is extremly good looking as well. In terms of storytelling and character development, there is still room for improvement. I binged the first 8 episodes within 2 days, the rest follows today...

I think the role of Dr. Smith with Parker Posey was miscast. The robot storyline, where you finally kind of warm up to this new interpretation, is OK overall. The constant switching of good robot, bad robot was annoying, even though it happened somewhat in the original series. I'm not sure I like where the storyline is going at the end of episode 10...reminds me of Star Trek Voyager...and their robot is currently MIA. Surely they'll have to find a friendly civilization or a pod of friendly robots to help them. In the original Dr. Smith was odd, campy, and self-serving but at least he wasn't inherently insane or evil like the current Parker Posey character. Expand

There are certainly flaws with this show, not least that the Robinson children seem to single handedly cause half the problems/deaths in the back half of the season, but everyone's okay with that because they're the show's central characters. But it's easy to forget weaknesses in characters when you've got such a fun show to watch. Molly Parker does a grand job playing the show's lead, and the production team have done an excellent ob creating an immersive environment. There's also an excellent score to back all this up. In this update, the Robinsons are part of a colony ship on their way to a new solar system because Earth is in a bad way. Stuff happens and they crash on a plant. More stuff happens and they're rescued. Stuff keeps happening and they bump into more survivors. Stuff happens to them too, and because there's more of them the stuff that happens just escalates to another level. That there are more survivors gives the show a chance to breathe and expand the story out from each episode having to neatly tie things up every week. There are flashback sequences that fill in character backgrounds and lay seeds that will be developed in further seasons, it's not all as straight-forward as it seems.

There are enough ideas and things happening to propel things without too much sagging, which is a problem with a lot of series which have a story spread over 10 episodes. The mid-season malaise doesn't seem as deep with LiS and things build towards a season finale that has me wanting more.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The original LIS was one of my favorite shows for years, both in its original run and reruns. It was melodramatic, and later got silly and campy; but the first season was an exciting Sci-Fi adventure show.

Many of the comments and critics panning the show speak to its lucky coincidences, inaccurate science, "dumb" character motivations and actions etc.

But the fact is that these characteristics were part of the original show as well--particularly the lucky coincidences. There's definitely room for improvement with respect to plot and character; but frankly they captured many of the elements that made the original series captivating to me as a child. I enjoyed the developing relationships among the characters, and I thought the family dynamic was well represented and believable. Yes, the science was wrong in many cases (e.g., when trapped in the tar, it would be physically impossible to lift that hatch--in the same way you can't open a car door in a submerged vehicle; the outside pressure would never allow it), and supposed scientific geniuses sometimes aren't very smart (e.g. Dr. Maureen can't figure out how to tell if someone pretending to be a physicist Ph.D is lying; why not ask about Maxwell's equations, or thesis work?), but the action was plentiful and enough new questions and surprises kept coming up to keep it all entertaining.

Maybe that does suggest it's really only suitable for young children; but I found it nostalgic in a way that made me want to stick with it. I'm looking forward to a season 2...hopefully!

Aside from the overwrought, hyperbolic and incessant music (reminiscent of the terrible Star Trek movie soundtracks of the 80's), it's a dark but harmless remake of the campy original. At its worst, Lost is a weak, cliché of script and uninspired plot-twists, but it's generally saved by good, fun stories and fantastic, ILM-worthy effects and scenery.

    __________

I want to address some of the negative reviews regarding "pc" and "leftist ideology." As a conservative I didn't find an ounce of politics in the show - and zero political correctness. One review said that the men are portrayed as weak - yet the opposite is true. The father is a military veteran and is the strongest character. He fights to protect his family and is willing to sacrifice himself to save them. We all know how the pc crowd believes masculinity is toxic. Especially white masculine men. This is not the case in this show. The father is portrayed positively. They even shown how the fathers role in the family is important.

Another topic coming up in the negative reviews is the wife "emasculating the husband." This is ridiculous. They have disagreements like all couples. If you watch the show long enough you'll see why they are arguing. Eventually they resolve their differences, rekindle their love.

My advice is to ignore the negative reviews written by those sensitive alt-right snowflakes, butthurt because the show has SOME minorities and SOME women in charge. The world is a diverse place and some people need to get over it.

I also didn't find the kids annoying, except for maybe Penny a little; she was definitely the weakest in terms of character development and in terms of useful skills. My biggest problem with the series was a few of the situations which make no sense. Either the situations are implausible or the characters make choices that are hard to believe intelligent people would make. There are a solid 3-4 of these at least and they all really break immersion. The show is pretty enjoyable otherwise. I'm really disappointed that other reviewers have criticized the diversity of the cast or the presence of strong women. These are great qualities for a film to have. The family is believable (many real families are blended, have half or step siblings) and I disagree that the men are weak. Not every man prefers a weak woman. It's got problems: Every episode is basically the same, they clearly want you to be impressed by the visuals, half the characters are uninteresting, it's an unnecessary remake, some sickos out there think the robot is "hot", and often times characters behave in ridiculous ways.

But... It's still entertaining. I really do enjoy watching it, more so than most other shows I've seen in

Accurate science is seldom exciting and spectacular enough to base a weekly adventure TV show upon. Lost in Space generally attracts generations of viewers interested in advanced science and engineering. So let's forgive the show for an occasional misconception in the service of an epic adventure.

Every Science Fiction series and film has major flaws relative to science and physics.

Barring a very unlikely demolition of Einstein's theory by revolutionary discoveries in quantum physics, warp drive and jumping to light speed can't exist. Physicists of today understand the space-time continuum rather well, and there is a very good reason to think that no object can move faster than the speed of light.

Earth is constantly bombarded by particles from space. These particles, called cosmic rays, hit our atmosphere and produce the gamma-ray light high above the Earth. The atmosphere blocks harmful cosmic rays and other high-energy radiation from reaching us on the Earth's surface.

Unfortunately, as spaceship velocities approach the speed of light, interstellar hydrogen H, although only present at a density of approximately 1.8 atoms/cm3, turns into intense radiation that would quickly kill passengers and destroy electronic instrumentation. In addition, the energy loss of ionizing radiation passing through the ship's hull represents an increasing heat load that necessitates large expenditures of energy to cool the ship. A magnetic shield can protect against particles coming from the solar wind, while other kinds of harmful particles, such as high energy gamma rays and X-rays, wouldn't be affected.

In Star Trek communication signals that can travel as fast as the fastest starship. This is just a convenient notion to get messages to Star Fleet and back by the end of a TV show, with no realistic physics behind it.

Light sabers are a genius idea: portable, lightweight, activated with the flick of a switch and oozing cool (at least if you’re a Star Wars fan). To create the saber’s shining blade of light, laser technology seems the obvious choice. Laser produces a highly directional light beam which can be used for everything from etching metal surfaces to eye surgery, so why not battling the dark side? Unfortunately, it’s not as simple as it looks.

Probably the most fundamental issue is that a light saber’s blade needs to stop short after a couple of feet. But a laser beam, just like any kind of light, never just ‘stops’, unless something in its way absorbs or reflects the energy.

What’s more, clashing light saber blades would be impossible – the beams would just pass straight through each other and make for a very boring duel.

So, the bottom line is: Lost in Space is an entertaining combination of real science, imaginary science gathered from lots of earlier stories, and stuff the writers make up week-by-week to give each new episode novelty. The real science is an effort to be faithful to humanity's greatest achievements, and the fanciful science is the playing field for a game that expands the mind as it entertains.

The setting of the show its self is outstanding! The rising action in every episode is amazing as well. the producer should consider a season 2 and probably more. This is more than a show; this is art.

Finally a reboot worthy of high praise. The action sequences and special effects blow the competition out of the water as this is feature film quality stuff. Instead of the usual stranded on a desert island cast away scenario, we find the family are part of a large colony headed to Alpha Centuri with a propulsion system just discovered. Part of the discovery is revealed later in the season as is the origin of "robot" who apparently is responsible for much of the "danger" we encounter right from the jump. Hang tight and let the story unfold. This time Dr. Smith,(who isn't who you think she is) is more than a cartoon narcissist , she's a full on sociopath. Bent on getting her own way. this is a thinking, reasoning, plotting villain. Parker posey is a great actress and its takes one of her talent to make you hate a character this much. You will binge this and be begging for season 2 before you realize its 5 am and you just ran out of episodes. Expand

I grew up watching the original lost in space. My feelings are mixed after finishing the first season. The characters are well crafted. Dr. Smith is the Devil herself and very well played. The storyline and backstory is well written and excellent. I give it 10 out of 10, and pooh-pooh on the skeptics... or is that poo-poo on the skeptics. Both work just fine. Cheers.

    Spoilers ahead!!!!!!!!!!
The drama in this show largely overshadowed everything else, and at one point was too much to bear.
Like at one point the tough but fair Judy of episode one evolve to be this all touchy-feely "Doctor" of episode 7 which leads to this massive waste of the fuel that would have been enough to get them off the planet, Even after all the superDoc **** Evan still dies

Dr smith aka Jessica aka June Harris bring out the best and worst of this show at times she is so good that you fall for her lies and her betrayals are fun to watch (they just leave you wondering why you fell for the lie and hating yourself that you fell for it). She some character to look forward to in season 2 and also the Judy and don relationship.
Toby Stephens and Mina Sundwall are just awesome in this show, the confidence of penny in her father and herself is just epic.
i cant say anything about Molly Parker, i have loved all her characters since Rebecca brooks( human target) and Lisa Marshall (Dexter).

    The ending was so epic
Will: I think we are here (shows a drawing)
    where?!!
    Will: DANGER

    lovely ending

I really like this reboot of the TV series. The flashback reveals of the story you think you know, shows that you really don't know this story, although you do, if you are a fan of the original TV series. The character changes work for me. It's a fun and interesting ride. I hope Netflix picks up a 2nd season.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I watched the original show in the 60's and it was my favorite but I hated where it went after the first few episodes. Always wondering where it could have gone if it stayed true to the beginning. This satisfies most of the direction it should have gone. I love the way the original story lines tie in. The planet's orbit, the chariot having to be assembled, Judy and Don relationship. They even made it so the original characters are together lost in the end, thrust through space at light speed. They even got the little things like gravity on the ship or moving with different tech other than rocket thrust. Loved the robot and Smith. Expand

Awesome!!!! One of the best science fiction shows on television. This is better than the original and I didn't think anything could beat the original. I love this show. Each episode left you wanting to see the next one. The Robinson family and the way they stick together is beautiful. Truly a show for the whole family. Please netflix give us a season 2 and 3 and on.

It's fun to imagine what humans could be capable of some day soon. Lots of things to think about and enjoy. i hope more we get to see a second season!

Posey plays the role with a gravity that encourages the show to orbit her, eccentrically, whenever she’s in view. The dynamic exemplifies the awkwardness of this muddled update. Charging in several directions at once, it asks the viewer to imagine efforts to secure a proud future for humankind, but it seems most vital when painting depraved schemes to survive.

Oddly enough, it’s the robot who proves most engaging. ... What really makes the robot stand out is its complexity. It’s mysterious, both in its origins, intentions, and inability to over-communicate. The human characters don’t earn the same mystery.

The thrill of exploration, or the examination of family dynamics, never feels like it arises organically from the action, in the way it might have on the show’s most obvious forebear that isn’t its direct predecessor: Lost.
