Best Game of Thrones in years, just the right blend of action and story to set up the series.

So naturally, compared to that steaming pile of garbage, this one might even be considered as passable. But do not be fooled by this deception, House of the Dragon is a boring show, with poorly written characters (a couple of exceptions here), needlessly deviating from the source material. The dialogues are simply abysmal. Tried watching it when it was released last year and my first impressions were it is a solid "meh". Now that I've seen the season, I can confirm it is. There is a level ofThere are some major problems with this show. Not in the least that every male character is either trying to simp his way into power, or is a toxic sociopath wanting to murder, steal and lie his way to the top. There is a level of incompetence here that suggests that the writers hate men, despite - in some cases - being them.

By contrast, all the female characters are powerful, charismatic and constantly fighting against the male gaze, the demands of the patriarchy, and plots by those women foolish enough to actually fall in love with a man.

What IS done well, is the political intrigue, most of the costumes, the CG for the dragons, and the scenery.

Overall, I'm interesting to see where this goes, and am willing to give it a chance to develop. In most aspects it covers the lore pretty well, for the most part maintaining the narrative integrity of the universe in which it is set.

Writers really need to start developing more interesting male characters. Completely sick of the trope that we are all sociopathic, self-serving, women haters unless we can control them - in which case they become tolerable.

There is no point that this transpires in the world of game of thrones except for more viewership. It's 100% riding on the cloak of GOT. The choice of timeline, when the Targaryens ruled, was a good & interesting pick I thought at first... but then where the f@#k are the dragons?! I don't have a hard on for dragons but their lack of presence is very weird, to put it mildly, during a Targaryen dynasty. They speak of dragons now and then, bolstering how the creatures has provided them an unchallanged seat of power, yet they're barely ever shown & even less interacted with. Are dragons not the most important asset you have?! Why do they feel like nothing more than a horse to them?! Don't Targaryens share this super special bond with their dragons?

On top of the "bolstering of their dragon power" the show is constantly pushing it's narrative direction behind the existence of a threat towards the Targaryen rule that just don't hold any water. All so called issues many, many times should & could just be answered with "who cares, we have dragons". There is no entertainment behind none issues. Skip this one

I got to admit I am pleasantly surprised. I expected nothing and I got a fantasy show with interesting plot, very good character development, really great acting and, well, dragons!

As someone who loves fantasy, this show is nice refreshment to the genre. The plot is interesting, it has development, things are set in motion. It is also what one can expect from a show set in the world of A Song of Ice and Fire, brutal, unforgiving, honest in what it wants to tell the audience. The characters are gray, some more than others, they all have good sides and flaws, and their development is really interesting to follow.

So far it is great and I hope it will continue to do so.

Actually surprised I enjoyed the first two episodes considering the horrendous final episodes of Game of Thrones.

They have gone back to what makes George RR Martin’s tv adaptions engaging and immersive, the political counter plays between characters.

The first season is not as good as season 4 of GoT but is about as good as Season 2 in my opinion. I have never read the books, so my review will solely rely on the show through the first 6 episodes. I see a lot of reviews with low scores due to "wokeness." As someone who is opposed to woke politics being needlessly injected into entertainment, I am surprised to see so many people saying this series is woke because I have not noticed any modern political agendas in this series, and at no point have I felt like I was being lectured by the writers. Similar to the first 4-5 seasons of GoT, this series almost solely focuses on the politics of Westeros and Esteros, and the politics of the world are what made GoT and make this series so enjoyable. The dialogue and acting are excellent. So far, the first 5 episodes felt like they were utilized to set up big events later in the season. The fighting scene was great, and the dragons look very cool too. I recommend ignoring those labeling this show as "woke" and watching this series. I can tell George was heavily involved, because the story is well-crafted and does not pull any punches! Expand

Woke sh!t, unnecessary changes that make no sense, boring acting, boring dialogue, destruction of immersion by adding blacks and chinese where they don't belong. Another story butchered.

At every moment you are aware that these are just actors in costumes on a set somewhere in western Europe. You never feel like this is a living, breathing fantasy world. Everything about this show feels artificial and improvised.

Watch if you literally have nothing else at all to do in your life. Skip otherwise and spare yourself this abomination.

There is nothing woke abt the series. It is seem people who mindlessly scream 'woke = broke' are really just bigots.

The characterisation is excellent. Matt Smith and Paddy are wonderful in their respective roles as Daemon and Viserys.

The characterisation is excellent. Matt Smith and Paddy are wonderful in their respective roles as Daemon and Viserys. Rhaenyra is likeable; that thing she pulled in episode 2 is epic. The thing Daemon pulled in episode 3 is epic. Can't wait to see more epic moments.

I am changing my score from 9 to 10 because of the review bombing by Amazon shills. Just look at some of the 0-scorers, this is their first ever review.

The biggest knock on it is that it's another prequel in a sea of prequels coming out right now.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Nothing happens. Bad writing and acting. They try so hard to use “old” English to sound authentic but they just sound like actors trying to pretend because of the bad writing. Cinematography is extremely bad making every scene feel goofy. No character has any clear goal of what he/she wants, but not in a good way like little finger with his mystique, but instead just makes the show feel slow and non eventful. They have several time skips in the show for no reason. Just make a decision already of what and when you want to tell your story. There was no point in showing me any of this extra stuff since nothing happens. The good part of the old game of thrones had several characters that you followed that had their own goals that would sometimes align or clash with other characters. This made the show feel more rich in lore, characters, cities, history etc. Whereas in this show you follow one perspective that has no goal other than “I want to be queen”. Why do you want to be queen? What are YOU gonna do when you are queen that you cannot do right now? Why not make me feel and cheer for a character? Or even fear for what would happen if another character becomes king/queen. I’m obviously not arguing for forcing the show to have grand battles and extreme plot twists all the time. You need to build up to these events to make them meaningful of course. But what a good show instead would do is to have several plot lines to follow. In this way it’s okey if one plot line currently is slow/eventless because you will then have another plot line that is more interesting. This way you can have your build up but at the same time make sure the viewer still enjoys the show. Besides there are good and bad ways of building up to the reveal. For instance why not make me wonder about something? Nothing has happened and therefore I have no questions or guesses about what will happen. I do not know and I do not care about anything here. They could kill of every character and it would not change anything about the show when it comes to plot at all. If you have seen the show try to summarize the show for someone who hasn’t seen it and you will both realize that you have nothing to talk about.

The only reason why some people enjoy this show is because compared to the Amazon’s lord of the rings show, this show is apparently better which isn’t saying much more than I’m really glad I haven’t seen that other show then.

For a show that has dragon in its name they sure have boring dragons. I still have no idea what they really do. Are they powerful? Are they just like a large horse? They had an enemy that had tiny crabs on its side and hid in caves and that was apparently a tough battle for the dragons? You can tell the the show really struggles to find problems for the plot since everything could pretty much be solved with “well we could send a dragon”. But what they do instead is to keep everything very vague like “we are going to loose everything if we loose to the crab people!”. How? And loose what? Your dragons? Political support? Why bother, just force them with your dragons like you did to get to power in the first place. How can “hiding in caves” be a powerful strategy? Why not just besiege the cave await their starvation like they did with cities in previous battles? Explain to the viewer how “crab peoples” strategy is so powerful and not by just saying “they are powerful” make me believe and understand how so. The clothes, make up and styling is very inconsistent. The old show focused on the show feeling and looking more realistic with some exceptions to magical beings but still managed to bland these together nicely. I could believe these different styles would live in the same universe. In this show they match different styles horribly all the time. This constantly takes you out of the story since you are constantly reminded about this being an incoherent mess when it comes to character styles. They do not fit together at all which makes it all feel very fake all the time. Some characters feel more realistic, others look like they are wearing a gigantic wig. Some people have haircuts that look more medieval while others have clearly managed to get their hair done by a Japanese final fantasy hair and make up team… Is this an anime? A video game? Or should it feel more like a realistic medieval setting?

Boring ridiculous but still better than GoT s8, a 0/10

Forget about Rings of Power, this is the show you want to see.

I'll be honest. I had some reservations about how well would House of the Dragon be capable to deliver the world of George R. R. Martin. And deliver it does.

Not only does it feel like Game of Thrones, but the cast is for the most part very well chosen. With most actors and actresses, delivering solid performances and being capable of pulling us into their world, their lives, their intrigues, their agendas. But above all making the viewer care about those characters.

Not that many shows can claim to be able to do that. But this one can. And it's good because after season 8 of Game of Thrones, the story needed to be focused on something else that makes us forget about that season.

And although the fall of House Targaryen is something we know it's going to happen no matter what, at least the show is being done well enough that even knowing that, doesn't really matter. It's a show that has proven to have what it takes to be seen and appreciated.

My only hope right now is that the success doesn't go to their heads, and they start making rookie mistakes. Game of Thrones lost the race in the last meters of the race, so I really hope that House of the Dragon doesn't make the same mistake.

Other than that three episodes in, and this show has come out strong and with enough fire to burn long and wide, instead of burning bright and fading just as fast.

This show is definitely a must see. And those that don't watch it will only lose.

So far there are 3 race swapped Targaryens. The problem with these characters are not the colour of their skin it's their acting ability. When you need to tick a box and choose people for diversity you then limit your pool of actors you can choose from. We have seen poor acting time and time again when they are just a tick box choice. We need to move on from this and choose the best person for the job regardless of skin colour. Needing more diversity is a twitter trend by a bunch of weirdos who just want to argue and create conflict. Onto the positives. Compared to the rings of power House of dragon succeeds in many areas. It has some really good casting and likeable characters. Matt Smith as Daeman is the main standout for me. He is fantastic. Milly Alcock who I have never heard of before is another standout. Fabian Frankel as Sir Criston is a good side character. There is actual character development in play here. Compared to rings of power the writing is night and day. It's engaging and makes you want to keep watching. The show is not perfect but it has suprised me and I will happily continue watching Expand

It bugged me that it's somewhat blunt in its allegory of patriarchy, repeating too much the women's ineligibility for the throne, while the existence of non-consort queens was in fact not that rare in the Middle-Ages. It has also diverted in some things from the book, trying to be more dramatic, but in the attempt it ended up a bit childish, so not sure adults will be as hooked as they were with GoT.
Whether because of the limited scope, or because the book is not as fleshed out as the previous, it ends up not reaching the standard GoT created, yet it is still entertaining.
The score, the artistic direction, and the CGI (dragons included), and especially the costumes, are all great.

It's hard to say and the 5000 character limit won't allow to go into the detail of it all. I thought that after the flop of last season of GoT nothing could set the bar lower. I wish I was wrong.

There are too many time jumps and characters not given enough time to mature on screen. Any growth or skill wielded by them is gained off screen. The only major positive at present is the series has just begun, giving it plenty of time to grow and impress. Expand

In my eyes, that's an incredible achievement, because I never expected to care about this franchise again after the end of Game of Thrones.

Season 1 spends a lot of time establishing characters, their relationships and allegiances and motivations, and the state of Westeros during that time-period. And some viewers may find that to be slow, or even a little boring. Personally though, I really loved this. With such a character-centered conflict, the Dance of the Dragons, it's essential to understand the context of the war fully. And I'm certain that will make the conflict itself - in future seasons - much more enjoyable and emotional.

The show's writing does slightly falter at times, but overall, it's written very consistently good. The characters are all varied and interesting to watch, and the inclusion of so many dragons always keeps things exciting. I haven't found any issues with the CGI or set pieces either; it's clear how big the budget is for this series.

Overall, Season 1 of House of the Dragon easily deserves a 9/10 in my eyes. It's a great show, and a brilliant set-up for much more action-packed seasons ahead. I feel like I care about all the characters now, on either side of the battle, because of the time taken to establish them all here. And I genuinely feel like that will lead to greatness in the coming seasons.

I cant believe we got this piece of Art after the fail of season 8 game of thrones. They redeemed themselves for me and I super excited for the next season. Episode 8 is my absolute favorite and on of the best episodes ever made in this "universe". Viserys nailed it and we got so many typical game of thrones moments, especially excellent writing. There were some minor downfalls, especially in Episode 9. Here and there some timejumps, but for me, they integrated that very well. I just wanted to get some pieces told by the series.

All in all wonderful made and nearly perfect.
