I don't really get the hate. So far I really enjoy it. Sometimes it is almost as good as GOT. The wokeness is there but rather suttle. Matt Smith steals is awesome in this and so are most of other actors.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Probably, it is the best fantasy TV-show of this year. And definitely a much better show than you would expect to see in J. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire universe after the disastrous last two seasons of Game of Thrones. Yes, yes, there has been a rehab of the universe since seasons 7 and 8 of Game of Thrones. We remember how these seasons contained incredibly stupid script moves, stupid dialogues, unrealistic battle scenes, there was a simplification of the characters ... really ... everything was done to destroy the best fantasy project (since the original Lord of the Rings trilogy).

And here we get the House of the Dragon. Initially, expectations were very low, due to the poor GoT ending. Moreover, the material of J.R.R. Martin book, written in the form of annalistic chronicles, is very specific and requires real additional processing. It takes effort to create living images, to write all the dialogues. If, without the help of Martin, two poor fellows Benioff and Weiss simply merged the scenario, lowering everything to the level of a kindergarten, then here (unexpectedly) the dialogues, twists, and characters look decent. For the character of Viserys Targaryen and the performance of the actor, I can raise the score by a point. The outlined problem of succession to the throne, the nature of the relationship between the characters, the dialogues - all this is created at a good level. Yes, the series starts slowly. The pace of the story is low, but there are no completely empty scenes that the GoT script abounded from the fifth season onwards.

Of course, it wasn't without drawbacks. First, it's the quality of the action. There is not enough of him in the series and ... thank for that. Since it's a real trouble with the action. The unrealistic behavior of a wild boar on the hunt causes laughter, Deamon dodging dozens of arrows causes tears. It would be better if everything remained within the framework of palace intrigues. Well, let the dragons fly back and forth, as additional diplomatic arguments.

I was very apprehensive because of how appalling the final GoT was, but I was pleasantly surprised. At some times, I am on the edge of my seat because the cliffhangers are very present in this show. The show includes very strong, powerful women and the acting from everyone is amazing. In addition, the CGI is fantastic. Sometimes, you truly feel like you are in the show. The storyline is compelling and the characters, for the most part, have a lot of depth to them. This is the best GoT has been in a long time. Hopefully, the second season is worth waiting for. Expand

Honestly, has every film maker lost the ability to film dark/night scenes? I don't care if the lighting realistic, I want to see what the hell is going on. The characters are mostly transparent, and they switch actresses for one of the characters during a 10 year timeline jump while keeping everyone else the same in such a sloppy way I thought she was an entirely new character until someone said her name also, ithe show offers nothing new, it's mediocre at best and is best skipped, or at least used as background noise while you do something more interesting. I think the major issues with the series are it is not as Epic as GoT. There is no suspense, there is no real villain, there is only one point of view, what happened to multiple view points and characters. It runs like a court theater drama, with story focused on king and his immediate family. It is unbelievably scaled down watered down version of GoT. It is clearly done with much smaller budget. I dont think we will see the 2nd season. GRR Martin is a lazy guy, who didnt finish GoT, naturally he has no time to write a proper novel for this timeline, let alone a script to base it on a novel. On top of this, none of the characters are likable or interesting so far. HBO has to understand they cannot recrate GoT with a documentary mini series style tv series, this thing is closer to British Royal theater than it is related to GoT. unfortunately so far it is a hard pass. Lost cause really as we all know how this story ends.

9/13 Update: There are 458 votes for this show vs 1721 votes for rings of power. Approximately 1500 more negative votes and excess votes indicates that show is getting heavy review bombing and artificially inflated. Given that two shows are equally popular. i think house of dragon is a an unfortunate failure as a fantasy show, slowly derailing towards royal family soap opera drama. 4th episode was a disgrace as nothing but a soft por n, so low this show got now. i have lost hope really dropping score

I don't know where the hordes of people giving it 10/10 ratings and slobbering over it like it's the greatest thing ever created come from. This show is nothing like Game of Thrones. Game of Thrones (at least for the first four seasons) was solid, substantial. This instead feels like a very cheap imitation.

The biggest reason House of the Dragon fails is lack of original lines from GRRM.
Every conversation feels like a childish attempt to recreate the charm of GoT, but falls completely flat. Five episodes in and I don't feel connected to any character at all. Or the story! The story itself is extremely boring. The showrunners, for some reason, are determined to shoehorn modern age woke ideas into George's world. Which is completely ridiculous and will never work in George's Westeros, where people actually have brains.

The characters are being unnecessarily distorted, to the point where they become nothing like how they are in the original book. They do and say things completely out of character and then partially revert back to their "book selves". Which makes them incoherent and even stupid. All these changes just to force woke stuff into the show. The show seems squarely fixed on the "Woman good and wise. Man bad and good-for-nothing" stance, which is laughably ridiculous.

The casting itself is poor. Matt Smith is NOT a good choice for Daemon. No chance. And the black Velaryon thing speaks for itself. (And no, the Velaryons are not black in the books. This isn't even up for debate)

And don't get me started on the senseless violence and nudity. The showrunners seem to think that these are the things that made GoT great. Needless to say, they have gotten it horribly wrong.

And for a show of such huge budget, the CGI is pretty bad. The aerial scenes of King's Landing, for example, look like screenshots from games from 2010.

This show has no substance, no soul, and no story.

They forgot to add any good guys.

Seriously, every single character in this show is a horrible person one way or another. Why care about one outcome over another when any option results in just another absolute basket case on the Iron Throne? Any time when you think there might be someone with a moral compass on the show, they brutally murder someone for no reason.

But even if that's the point, the narrative is so disjointed, it's impossible to even tell who the show itself is asking the audience to root for. It's just a bunch of terrible people doing awful things for reasons that aren't always clear. And even worse, it's painfully predictable. I don't mean I know the outcome of the show or specific plot points, but within any given scene you can almost always bet that, given the choice, a character will do something to screw over—or perhaps even kill—another character. Just cuz.

And for comparison, in the original Game of Thrones series, we saw characters with noble qualities put into terrible situations we wanted to see them overcome. Or perhaps the terrible situations would cause them to earn those noble qualities. Here, it's just awful people being awful and wanting to be King/Queen. They can't even give reasons WHY they want to rule. The show just assumes that everyone's goal in life is to be the King. Not to make the world a better place, or to advance society in any way. It's just the thing to want. Likely so they can kill more people.

Years later the whispers of a new prequel show detailing another book in the universe made fans nervously optimistic, but well and rightly on guard. Thankfully, House of the Dragon's inaugural outing does plenty to sooth those nervous feathers and return HBO's modern flagship franchise back into the limelight. While slightly slow to start, each episode is gripping, tense, and enjoyable. The script is expertly handled and follows the source material well. The additions of excellent CGI and top flight acting, especially Paddy Considine's King Viserys who should deservedly get an Emmy nomination, enthralled me from start to finish. Drawbacks for some have included a jarring shift in the actors when their characters age, a few too many graphic birthing scenes, and the overall pacing of the first season. I tend to lean away from these however and give House of the Dragon much deserved benefits of the doubt. With fervor, I eagerly await the next season after such a strong start. Expand

With scenes which only reasons for existing is to look cool. Character decisions seeming idiotic and contradictory to their decisions in previous episodes. A big let down for the finale of a season that started brilliantly. But still an amazing show. Daemon stills every scene he is in and doesn’t have a single poor moment. And the King is the morally good character the audience can cheer for that was lacking in Game Of Thrones. I’m just extremely worried about the future seasons. Right now the show is sitting at GoT season 5 quality, I’d be fine if it drops to a season 6 GoT quality in the next 3 seasons. But there’s a lot of time and a lot of good things to ruin, I fear we might be getting a repeat of GoT season 8 in our future. Expand

It has had a start similar to that of Game of Thrones Season 1 and can see how the actions made in this season will have major implications in the future and cast a long shadow without referring to the books or giving any spoilers.

It was a masterful hand that HBO have played here because they are so confident about their show, the writing, the dialogue and acting. Even after a couple of time jumps that as viewer requires you to readjust. The CGI has been good, mainly the dragons and I am very exiting to see more.

I believe this show will improve and am fully invested.

A female centric show which seeks to empower but not glamorize female suffering. Expect this show to be equally as androgynistic as Game of Thrones was misogynistic. If Game of Thrones was a show seen through the male gaze, House of the Dragon is a show seen through the female gaze. We live in the age of polarization, and gender politics is as polarized of a subset as you will find. The two shows complement each other greatly in this regard.

The show focuses on the female experience set in the fantasy universe of GoT. It shows female suffering at the hands of their biology, the men around them, and at the hands of other females. Childbirth, reproductive rights, the patriarchal ideal of female purity, and gender inequality are at the forefront. It definitely is a show centered around gender politics with a strong feminist message. It is somewhat ironic that it fails miserably at the Bechdel Test.

I think the show succeeds at being entertaining at parts, even offering a somewhat sympathetic view of toxic masculinity and how modern feminism may mesh with and even reconcile with misogyny and traditional masculinity. In the end though there is a definite largess of male characters with irredeemable? character flaws (pedophilia, rapists, sadists, absenteeism) while female characters have some very redeemable flaws (maternal love, filial duty, extra marital romance) which are often attributed to men who manipulate or control them. It's a show with very contemporary sensibilities. Women are shown to be powerful, while their deepest flaws are attributed to men or their loyalties to men. Men who are shown in the most positive light are subservient to women. Men who are in positions of power are deeply and irredeemably flawed.

I find this lack of balance both contemporary and yet tired. While it serves to make a very small number of female characters interesting, it turns the remainder of the expansive cast into mere set dressing and thus the whole setup seems very artificial. In short, a worthy, equal and opposite response to Game of Thrones. Newton's Third Law reigns supreme.

Remember how liberals were so mad that Daenerys did not get to Mary Sue her way into the sunset? Well, House of Dragons provides you with a substitute Daenerys look-a-like who does exactly that! Feminism wish fulfillment is abound here. Also remember how liberals constantly complained about the horrifying whiteness of GOT? There was never ending wailing over the congregation of white people into one place during the GOT era. It was literally Hitler and the Ku Klux Klan. Every time they opened their mouth they whined about "muh black actors were are they?" Well, here again "House of Dragons" serves merely as a correction to GOT. Feminism and Blacks, that's it. As far as the screen writing, it bears the worst of the late GOT seasons' fan service. Lame snark that falls flat. Dumb dunking on each other. GOT season 7 and 8 especially were awful for that, but House of Dragons continues this trend. It's cheap and easy to do. Why not? Screen writing is not the point. We now have major television shows doing nothing but serving as props for black and feminist representation - that IS the show. Expand

Instead of battles of kingdoms and realm-changing decisions, we watch the typical boring story of a rebellious child vs a dutiful father. With the biggest intrigue about who **** whom. Boring to watch and lost all of the uniqueness of GoT.
Another problem - the lack of interesting characters, locations, scenes and even costumes. Most elements are boring and tasteless, and not many in general, compared to the overwhelming diversity and style of GoT.
Upd I saw a lot of negative around Valerians, but actually, they look at least stylish and interesting compared to other empty, dull characters.
In the end, the series is not only significantly worse than GoT but bad in general and not worth watching

The main character ambushes an entire army which was winning a war by hiding in a cave. If that sentence sound wildly stupid to you then don't watch the show.
