They had a perfectly good "Fire and Blood", the words of house Targaryen and some halfwit still decided to change it to HoUsE oF tHe dRaGoN. Souds like the name of a children's cartoon show.

Tries too hard to be deep but has no substance to back it up. Luckily for this series, it came out about the same time as the all-time hilariously bad Rings of Power did. So naturally, compared to that steaming pile of garbage, this one might even be considered as passable. I have seen now 7 episodes and if I wouldn´t watch it with other persons I wouldn´t have continued it. They have dragons but the show is clearly lacking any wit and magic.

The choice of timeline, when the Targaryens ruled, was a good & interesting pick I thought at first... but then where the f@#k are the dragons?! I don't have a hard on for dragons but their lack of presence is very weird, to put it mildly, during a Targaryen dynasty. They speak of dragons now and then, bolstering how the creatures has provided them an unchallanged seat of power, yet they're barely ever shown & even less interacted with. Are dragons not the most important asset you have?! Why do they feel like nothing more than a horse to them?! Don't Targaryens share this super special bond with their dragons?

On top of the "bolstering of their dragon power" the show is constantly pushing it's narrative direction behind the existence of a threat towards the Targaryen rule that just don't hold any water. All so called issues many, many times should & could just be answered with "who cares, we have dragons". There is no entertainment behind none issues. Skip this one… Expand

They try so hard to use “old” English to sound authentic but they just sound like actors trying to pretend because of the bad writing. Cinematography is extremely bad making every scene feel goofy. No character has any clear goal of what he/she wants, but not in a good way like little finger with his mystique, but instead just makes the show feel slow and non eventful. They have several time skips in the show for no reason. Just make a decision already of what and when you want to tell your story. There was no point in showing me any of this extra stuff since nothing happens. The good part of the old game of thrones had several characters that you followed that had their own goals that would sometimes align or clash with other characters. This made the show feel more rich in lore, characters, cities, history etc. Whereas in this show you follow one perspective that has no goal other than “I want to be queen”. Why do you want to be queen? What are YOU gonna do when you are queen that you cannot do right now? Why not make me feel and cheer for a character? Or even fear for what would happen if another character becomes king/queen. I’m obviously not arguing for forcing the show to have grand battles and extreme plot twists all the time. You need to build up to these events to make them meaningful of course. But what a good show instead would do is to have several plot lines to follow. In this way it’s okey if one plot line currently is slow/eventless because you will then have another plot line that is more interesting. This way you can have your build up but at the same time make sure the viewer still enjoys the show. Besides there are good and bad ways of building up to the reveal. For instance why not make me wonder about something? Nothing has happened and therefore I have no questions or guesses about what will happen. I do not know and I do not care about anything here. They could kill of every character and it would not change anything about the show when it comes to plot at all. If you have seen the show try to summarize the show for someone who hasn’t seen it and you will both realize that you have nothing to talk about.

The only reason why some people enjoy this show is because compared to the Amazon’s lord of the rings show, this show is apparently better which isn’t saying much more than I’m really glad I haven’t seen that other show then.

For a show that has dragon in its name they sure have boring dragons. I still have no idea what they really do. Are they powerful? Are they just like a large horse? They had an enemy that had tiny crabs on its side and hid in caves and that was apparently a tough battle for the dragons? You can tell the the show really struggles to find problems for the plot since everything could pretty much be solved with “well we could send a dragon”. But what they do instead is to keep everything very vague like “we are going to loose everything if we loose to the crab people!”. How? And loose what? Your dragons? Political support? Why bother, just force them with your dragons like you did to get to power in the first place. How can “hiding in caves” be a powerful strategy? Why not just besiege the cave await their starvation like they did with cities in previous battles? Explain to the viewer how “crab peoples” strategy is so powerful and not by just saying “they are powerful” make me believe and understand how so. The clothes, make up and styling is very inconsistent. The old show focused on the show feeling and looking more realistic with some exceptions to magical beings but still managed to bland these together nicely. I could believe these different styles would live in the same universe. In this show they match different styles horribly all the time. This constantly takes you out of the story since you are constantly reminded about this being an incoherent mess when it comes to character styles. They do not fit together at all which makes it all feel very fake all the time. Some characters feel more realistic, others look like they are wearing a gigantic wig. Some people have haircuts that look more medieval while others have clearly managed to get their hair done by a Japanese final fantasy hair and make up team… Is this an anime? A video game? Or should it feel more like a realistic medieval setting?

Boring ridiculous but still better than GoT s8, a 0/10… Expand

Но это не мешает его жене узнать о его смерти в тот же день, в то время как его труп и лодка - покоятся на дне морском и по меньшей мере ещё месяц, люди бы ждали его возвращения, полагая что он опаздывает, но уж точно не погиб. Но нет. Жена в его доме узнаёт именно о его смерти. И это становится причиной для ураганных последствий. Это разочаровывает и фрустрирует. Это уровень дешёвых фанфиков, но не сериала с таким именем.… Expand

Epic fail. Incredible boring writing, as another user wrote feels like a court theater drama with a tendency to soap opera. Super hollow and not in the league of GOT at all. I've seen 5 episodes and will stop here. What a waste.

It runs like a court theater drama, with story focused on king and his immediate family. It is unbelievably scaled down watered down version of GoT. It is clearly done with much smaller budget. I dont think we will see the 2nd season. GRR Martin is a lazy guy, who didnt finish GoT, naturally he has no time to write a proper novel for this timeline, let alone a script to base it on a novel. On top of this, none of the characters are likable or interesting so far. HBO has to understand they cannot recrate GoT with a documentary mini series style tv series, this thing is closer to British Royal theater than it is related to GoT. unfortunately so far it is a hard pass. Lost cause really as we all know how this story ends.

9/13 Update: There are 458 votes for this show vs 1721 votes for rings of power. Approximately 1500 more negative votes and excess votes indicates that show is getting heavy review bombing and artificially inflated. Given that two shows are equally popular. i think house of dragon is a an unfortunate failure as a fantasy show, slowly derailing towards royal family soap opera drama. 4th episode was a disgrace as nothing but a soft por n, so low this show got now. i have lost hope really dropping score… Expand

This show feels like fan fiction. I don't know where the hordes of people giving it 10/10 ratings and slobbering over it like it's the greatest thing ever created come from. This show is nothing like Game of Thrones. Game of Thrones (at leastThis show feels like fan fiction. Game of Thrones (at least for the first four seasons) was solid, substantial. This instead feels like a very cheap imitation.

The biggest reason House of the Dragon fails is lack of original lines from GRRM.
Every conversation feels like a childish attempt to recreate the charm of GoT, but falls completely flat. Five episodes in and I don't feel connected to any character at all. Or the story! The story itself is extremely boring. The showrunners, for some reason, are determined to shoehorn modern age woke ideas into George's world. Which is completely ridiculous and will never work in George's Westeros, where people actually have brains.

The characters are being unnecessarily distorted, to the point where they become nothing like how they are in the original book. They do and say things completely out of character and then partially revert back to their "book selves". Which makes them incoherent and even stupid. All these changes just to force woke stuff into the show. The show seems squarely fixed on the "Woman good and wise. Man bad and good-for-nothing" stance, which is laughably ridiculous.

The casting itself is poor. Matt Smith is NOT a good choice for Daemon. No chance. And the black Velaryon thing speaks for itself. (And no, the Velaryons are not black in the books. This isn't even up for debate)

And don't get me started on the senseless violence and nudity. The showrunners seem to think that these are the things that made GoT great. Needless to say, they have gotten it horribly wrong.

And for a show of such huge budget, the CGI is pretty bad. The aerial scenes of King's Landing, for example, look like screenshots from games from 2010.

Any time when you think there might be someone with a moral compass on the show, they brutally murder someone for no reason.

But even if that's the point, the narrative is so disjointed, it's impossible to even tell who the show itself is asking the audience to root for. It's just a bunch of terrible people doing awful things for reasons that aren't always clear. And even worse, it's painfully predictable. I don't mean I know the outcome of the show or specific plot points, but within any given scene you can almost always bet that, given the choice, a character will do something to screw over—or perhaps even kill—another character. Just cuz.

And for comparison, in the original Game of Thrones series, we saw characters with noble qualities put into terrible situations we wanted to see them overcome. Or perhaps the terrible situations would cause them to earn those noble qualities. Here, it's just awful people being awful and wanting to be King/Queen. They can't even give reasons WHY they want to rule. The show just assumes that everyone's goal in life is to be the King. Not to make the world a better place, or to advance society in any way. It's just the thing to want. Likely so they can kill more people.… Expand

Here we go again. Show runners use history as lame excuse for weird, overly violent scenes that actually would never happen in the medieval world. The only safe & happy women in the show are prostitutes, what a emancipatory masterpiece.

Production seems good as they poured lots of money into, costume designs are really nice for the most part but the PC agenda and wokness in combination with fan service goes hand in hand with the horrible GoT final seasons. Hard pass.

Ok, I watched the first 5 episodes and I found them ok/good.

Too slow paced with so many invented filler scenes with empty meaning for the plot. Black Velaryons completely destroys my immersion in this world's fantasy. The show lacks the epic of the books and their charismatic characters, very bad cast choise.

Main problem is so a smaller scale compared to GoT. Instead of battles of kingdoms and realm-changing decisions, we watch the typical boring story of a rebellious child vs a dutiful father. Upd I saw a lot of negative around Valerians, but actually, they look at least stylish and interesting compared to other empty, dull characters.
In the end, the series is not only significantly worse than GoT but bad in general and not worth watching… Expand

To be honest, I am watching it, because I want to be back in the world of Westeros. I can't speak for anyone else. But, when I rewatch season 1 of Game of Thrones, I see a significant difference in Quality writing and acting.

One would think, that the new series would at least, up their level of writing and acting. But, comparing both season 1 of Game of Thrones with what I see from season 1 of House of the Dragon, Game of Thrones is far superior.

I am not a fantasy genre fan. I am just a casual watcher, who likes to watch good shows and movies. So far, I have yet to see anything from House of the Dragon, that would suggest that it's better than Game of Thrones. In any way.

I am not trying to bad-mouth the series. This is not my intention. I am making an observation.

I am quite sure, that there are people who love what they are seeing, from House of the Dragon. To each his own.

Again. I will watch House of the Dragon, because I enjoy the world of Westeros. Hopefully, HBO has more spinoffs coming out soon. But, House of the Dragon is OK. It's not GREAT.… Expand

This show is SO disappointing, I'm not sure if it can even be saved (NOTE: This review was submitted after Season 1, Episode 4), and this is coming from somebody who absolutely loved the GOT series so much that he read the books -- and I'm not normally a book reader. The biggest problem: There isn't a single remotely likable character. Not one. I mean, in GOT, right off the bat, you took a liking to all the Starks, Jon Snow, Tyrion, Daenerys, Jorah, et al., and even respected the deceitful, ambitious climbers like Varys and Littlefinger, who exchanged exhilarating barbs many a times, as well as the morally bankrupt, uber power-hungry Tywin, Cersei, Joffrey, and to a lesser extent, Jaime. The second biggest failing is the dialogue is just so "meh." Whereas I used to marvel at the cleverly written interplay between characters, this just feels like we're getting B-list writers for the prequel and/or folks who are just there to collect a paycheck. On top of all that, then you've got the mega cringe non-stop incest and on-screen adult/child sex scenes because, ya know, Hellywood gotta Hellywood and they're clearly using social engineering to make pedophilia mainstream. Disgusting. In fact, for the mainstream reviewers/critics/talking heads who gave this show high marks, kinda makes you wonder about them, but I digress. In sum: If you were hoping for a prequel that's even half as good as the original GOT series, I, for one, believe you will be sadly disappointed.… Expand

Two of the central characters were suddenly swapped out for people we don't recognize. Several characters aged except for Criston (who looked exactly the same), making the transition more difficult. There is no art or deft in this move to adulthood. 5 episodes of developing characters wiped out by an inept swap of new actors in episode 6 ruined the series.… Expand

Du coup, on dort à poings fermés… et lorsqu’on arrive à relever la tête, c’est pour mieux replonger aussitôt dans un sommeil profond ! c’est en effet la série la plus soporifique, la plus ennuyeuse qu’on ait jamais vue… ou plutôt tenté de voir.
