It's an experiment, and one with some rough edges. But Alda, Falco, and Buscemi are powerhouse dramatic actors, and C.K. makes a good reactive foil to them. The first episode (which runs slightly over an hour) feels like such a self-contained story that I have no idea what later installments will be about, or feel like, but I can't wait to see them, whenever they happen to appear. There is, as in live theater, the occasional hesitance over a line, and the first episode relies on melodramatic twists that don’t always feel earned. But when it really gathers steam--nearly any time Mr. Alda opens his mouth, and especially in his scenes with Ms. Falco--it’s like little else on TV. It’s not easily definable as a format, being the love child of a passion for O’Neill, stand-up comedy, and the most available format C.K. has--a webseries. That makes for a strange and sublime episode, one that is gripping in both how different it is and how familiar it feels. Read full review

The acting is superb, especially as the tensions become more overt in the second half.... He’d probably kill with the same material [on poltics and current events] in a stand-up show, but in a script about abuse, alcoholism, denial, and family estrangement, it doesn’t quite work. Too much of the show may remind you of the experience of being trapped in a bar with shrill drunks who aren’t anywhere near as fascinating as they seem to think. Still, the series lingers in the mind. With its hurts and silences, its yellow-brown lighting and oak-and-sawdust textures, and its sense of impending doom, it is unlike anything else that calls itself American television. Brilliant stuff. It is no surprise that Louis CK is as fine a writer as he is a stand-up comedian. There is an honesty and poignancy that take this series a level up from anything television and most things films have to offer. Hemingway meets Norman Lear here. Then there is the acting. Any one of the key actors is fun to watch in mediocre productions. Of course they shine in Louis CK's masterful hands.
Users jameslk1 and Thirdrail--your characterizing this show as "pretentious" just underscores your own inadequacies as human beings. Let me help you. This is what the people who are much brighter and much more perceptive than you call "art." You're welcome.

The set is well done, from the worn floors to the outdated furniture to the beautifully articulated suggestion of a thin coat of the grimy buildup of cigarette smoke and demolished dreams that covers everything. Each and every performance is believable. This show is deeply satisfying and as tasty as a freshly slaughtered elk to a starving tiger. If all you ever eat is Twinkies, Thirdrail and jameslk1, anything else is going to piss you off. Go Louis CK. Kudos to ALL the actors. This show is making history and will continue to do so.… Expand

This show is like a stellar Steppenwolf play in Chicago - delivered in a series of hour long streaming doses. The acting talent coupled with the incredible script are really powerful. Thank you Louis CK. Great TV.

There is some truly incredible writing and acting in this show. But in the end, all great writing is about ideas and feelings, not words. Louis C.K. proves his depth.

As a lover of good story-telling there are some great stories in this show. In particular, somewhere around the middle episode, Horace's ex-wife tells him of an attraction she had for another man. It is a spell-binding half-hour monologue that seems about to land several times, only to fly even higher on the next breath.… Expand

This show is a perfect calculation of misery and joy.
It drips feeds you just enough happiness to get from tragedy to tragedy, and it's worth it.

The show takes it's time with incredible writing and story telling that gives each character a moment to share something meaningful with the audience.

I really wanted to be drawn into this work. Now, I know it was not constructed to be a comedic piece, and frankly, I'm fine with that. More than fine. But, that said, the timings are like comedic timings. I applaud the risk-taking. I also applaud the story premise, but as a guy who worked onI really wanted to be drawn into this work. I also applaud the story premise, but as a guy who worked on "Glengarry Glen Ross," "Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolf," "Fortune in Men's Eyes," and the like for decades, when an essentially dramatic work is ostensibly written and shot for the small screen it should not ignore its stage antecedents. Thanks to a most remarkable cast, the unsure writing is often saved.… Expand

What a joke. This is not a show. It's a very, very bad play. Louis got a few old stars, and wrote a bunch of **** Then he wrote some **** and then some more.
