Gotta like LouisCk for trying this. Cuz, there is no WAY this would get on a network for a few reasons. First, its dark. OK, I know his FX series is not very happy, but this is sad. All in all, its too slow and pitying to watch. Expand

In a world of canned laughter and fake responses Louis CK amazes with his painfull observations of real life. No punches pulled. Episode 3 had me mesmerized and I watched it a few times now, breaking my heart over and over again. Thank you very much Louis.

The best scenes in this show moves me at my core. For me its really the acting thats the main force here, but its the way its all done with the camera and editing that makes the acting get trough in a way that I have seen rarely before. You have no idea what you will get, one episode your belly lauging, the next your watching a character spewing their guts in a 15 minute monologue.

There is some truly incredible writing and acting in this show. But in the end, all great writing is about ideas and feelings, not words. Louis C.K. proves his depth.

Users jameslk1 and Thirdrail--your characterizing this show as "pretentious" just underscores your own inadequacies as human beings. Let me help you. This is what the people who are much brighter and much more perceptive than you call "art." You're welcome.

The set is well done, from the worn floors to the outdated furniture to the beautifully articulated suggestion of a thin coat of the grimy buildup of cigarette smoke and demolished dreams that covers everything. Each and every performance is believable. This show is deeply satisfying and as tasty as a freshly slaughtered elk to a starving tiger. If all you ever eat is Twinkies, Thirdrail and jameslk1, anything else is going to piss you off. Go Louis CK. Kudos to ALL the actors. This show is making history and will continue to do so.

It's a brilliant show. Original, deep, funny. The characters are full and complex and their relationships seem genuine. Warning: there are no special effects, gag jokes or laugh tracks. "Pretentious" is defined as "making an exaggerated outward show; ostentatious." This is 180 degrees from that, the complete opposite. It's quiet, understated, and timeless.

At first glance, the show feels like a stage production – the nuances, the minimal setting and traditional camera angles, the magnificent acting (noted in particular are Alan Alda and Steve Buscemi for their memorable performances) and the taste of something that is long gone. No canned laughter, or live one for that matter, as it was not recorded in front of an audience. It is funny, yet not the same *funny* as you would expect from CK or the usual comedy show. This is the sort of tragic-funny – people’s lives, stories and opinions - which will make you smile and nod in understanding of the theatre-style nuances presented by (mostly) very talented crew of actors. The show is partly a reminiscence of older days, “cheers” and “all in the family” comes into mind yet both classics never dared to be so blatant. The webisode format allows CK to have more freedom in terms of running time and probably content, as well. This show is a lot of things and is definitely theatre magic in play. I liked it very much and very thankful to see this sort of art form in an age of politically-correct, ‘saying a lot but not saying much’ TV shows. Expand

I'll give that mediocre rating anyway, because it's an average of things I liked and those I didn't like.

The show was very earnest and real. We have popular actors/actresses that did their jobs very well.
Many of the stories the people told, where very touching.
So, there was really something there, that I liked a lot.
You needed a little patience, but it was mostly worth it.

But what I ask myself and what leads to only a 5-rating is the why.
Why all this tragedy, this suffering and sadness, what did it lead to?
What do I get out of it? Nothing.
After witnessing a tragedy like this, I need to take something with me.
Sadness and tragedy alone are just sad and tragic.
A sad and tragic story has to have more than that. Otherwise it'll make you sad and nothing more.
    I don't need a happy ending. But I need more than a "That's it. It's over.".
All of them dead or gone. These are sad things you want to leave behind and if there isn't something more,
there nothing you want to keep and take home with you.

I appreciate Louis C.K.'s work, but it was too much of a downer for me with no apparent benefits.

I like the idea of releasing a series right to the internet without all the network BS. I really like Louis C.K. and Steve Buscemi. I watch a lot of TV shows so I thought this would be a home run for me and be something I would enjoy. But... It just seems un-watchable. The dialogue is very forced and the whole show just seems depressing and dry. I get there is some humor in the show, but there is no good delivery for it, and there is a lot of awkward silence and dead air. As others have said, it feels like a bad play being acted out.

I tried the first 20 minutes of episode 1, and found myself just so turned off and uninspired by the show that I ended up skipping through the rest of the episode to different spots hoping it would eventually pick up or something interesting would happen. Yes, the show makes some good points and the script writing is great, but the show itself just doesn't have the delivery needed to hold my attention and it is not entertaining.

I really wanted to give this a good review, and I want to buy the rest of the episodes. I wanted this to be a great show. But I guess I just don't get it and I can't force myself to watch something I don't like on principle. And when you have someone like me, who has grown up with a TV glued to my face 8 hours a day, watching pretty much every sitcom, cartoon, documentary, sci-fi show, drama, talk show, and reality show aired in the past 50 years - and found something enjoyable in all of them - to not find something enjoyable with Horace and Pete is a failure on the show's part, and not something I am "missing."

I love you Louis C.K. But I don't love your show.

Take the average reddit comments section and turn it into a web-series. Then get some big names to sign on to give it some credibility, and suddenly a 1 star idea becomes 2 stars. This isn't the worst thing I've ever watched, but I really hope Louis CK goes back to doing what he does best - comedy.

Louis C.K. has turned into a pretentious tool who is as annoying as he is irrelevant. This is some of the worst television I've ever seen. Horace & Pete is wildly disappointing. The cast is amazing, the acting is strong... but it just goes nowhere. It's shot like a 3 camera comedy with no audience and weird lighting. Nothing that happens in the show engages me. FAIL.

Giving it a 10 for originality and for its unique voice. It is a bit uneven in places--another draft or two of the scripts would have helped and some of CK's casting decisions are just plain bad (he nailed all of the main parts though). At the end of the day, it's a very funny, very shocking, and very sad series about a sad, dysfunctional family who run a neighborhood bar.

It is kind of slow burn and typical to Louis CK shows (Louie being an example) moves from Comedy to Drama. it grabs audience with initial set of comedy in earlier episodes and trusts their intelligence and maturity to delve into deeper human condition.
It has zero fakeness. That makes it a unique show.

A Rare, Uncompromising And Raw Viewing Experience

Going boldly back to the stagy, early days of TV - minus the live - Louis C.K. created ten mesmerizing chapters in the life of the family Wittel, a damaged and battered family operating, for one hundred years, a dive bar in Brooklyn USA.

At once funny, tragic, shocking and lewd, "Horace and Pete" is an uncompromising truth beyond rare in contemporary entertainment filled with phony sentiment and easy solutions. The episodes - ranging from sixty-eight to thirty minutes - ultimately rips the heart from viewers courageous enough to sit quietly and take the ride along with Louis and an amazing cast whose work deserves every award imaginable. (If ever a show deserved a Peabody, it is "Horace and Pete.") It's doubtful anyone will look at Alan Alda or Jessica Lange in the same way.

It's a pleasure to watch a groundbreaking show setting the storytelling bar at a new, almost unreachable level for future shows to scale. Fair warning, "Horace and Pete" is not for those easily shocked or upset by raw depictions of a family in, to say the least, desperate ruin. Its universal themes of extreme family dysfunction and decades of patriarchal abuse may resonate deeply and touch within or send some searching for a convenient pillow to hide the proceedings from sight.

Not residing in the same Universe as "Cheers," even Bukowski, the vagaries of politics and contemporary life are bandied about by barflies whose wisdom is directly proportional to their alcohol intake. They're not despicable, eschew your pity, and will spit judgment back in your face. They just are with neither delusion, apology nor rationalization. They're someone you know. Or a family member (God help you).

In one extraordinary episode among many, the venerable Laurie Metcalf - playing Louis' ex-wife - admits infidelity against her second husband in a locked down closeup held for ten minutes without a cut.

The production is raw, too. Especially the first episode. There is camera shake, and audio is disrupted when actors thump chests near body mikes. Oddly, a missed match-frame edit making a slight jump cut is allowed to pass. No editor worth their salt would allow such a glaring error. It seems Louis might be underscoring the story rawness within the production. Or he wished to make it look cheap for fund raising purposes. It's really irrelevant as the tech credits are generally fine. Story and character are king here, not pretty pictures.

Enough gratitude for this show cannot be expressed. A show mounted by Louis on a prayer by asking viewers to pay a few bucks per episode - a self-distribution model working well for a show Louis would never offer to networks who wouldn't touch it anyway.

There are not enough kudos to lay at the feet of Louis C.K. and the brave cast. "Horace and Pete" is an unforgettable experience that just might haunt you. Do Not Miss It.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Yes, I watched this because its Louis C. K. and the guy is full of surprises, most of them very good ones, and I had no idea what was coming. Consequently the first 10-15 minutes were a bit of a disappointment, because it starts so slow and everyone in the background is quiet and nothing seems to be happening and his comedian friends come in and don't seem to be adding much to the storyline and he is playing the lead again and he really isn't that good an actor, as becomes almost painfully clear here and there, but then... then... come the real actors... and with them the real characters and Louis in between being mostly the 'reactor' to these strong individuals and the whole thing suddenly comes to life about halfway in, culminating in the situation with lawyer and sister, which I found very captivating. Relationships, expectations, abstractions are the most powerful things there are and having seen then set up in this imaginary place and family I am now very much looking forward to how things continue. Louis CK writes, directs and stars in this beautiful and painful family story, which is a complete opposite of his previous, mostly comedic work. It's a story about a family, that took a lot of emotional hits in the past, and that haunts them in the present.

CK and Steve Buscemi co-star as titular characters, our protagonists, and Brooklyn bar owners Horace and Pete. The Bar, named - unsurprisingly - Horace and Pete is small, with a low profit and not many costumers, but with a great cultural and family heritage, which means the most to Horace's racist and homophobic uncle Pete (Alan Alda).

As we all know, money can corrupt and destroy a family. But, can it bring family members back together? Wrathful fight emerges between the bar owners - Horace and Pete on one side, and their sister Sylvia on the other (groundbreakingly portrayed by never-better Edie Falco).

Their every day struggle is eased (and sometimes hardened) by regular costumers: recovering alcoholic Leon (Steven Wright), a Trump-supporter Kurt (Kurt Metzger), a bars's own femme fatalle Marsha (Jessica Lange), a conservative assistant DA Nick (Nick DiPaolo) and Trisha (Maria Dizzia), a pleasant girl, who has Tourette syndrome. With their conversations and bickers they remind us, again and again, that outside ourselves, and our own small problem-groups(family, workplace, friends), there is an angry and desperate society, which is turning(again!) towards a wrong direction.

Although it's simple and raw, it's equally deep and meaningful. The show captures a family's poignant relationships, troubles and resolutions as no other show does.

The series ends, as it starts - tragically. That's also what a viewing experience is like-sad and hard, but once in a lifetime.

If the show has flaws--it’s certainly slow-moving, and the intentional abrasiveness of its characters can sometimes feel cartoonish--they deserve to be forgiven just because of the singularity of vision on display.

Horace and Pete is quiet and intimate when it's at its best, but in so many ways it feels like indulgence. And that's fine. If you're operating at Louis C.K.'s level, I guess you get a few of those.

The acting is superb, especially as the tensions become more overt in the second half.... He’d probably kill with the same material [on poltics and current events] in a stand-up show, but in a script about abuse, alcoholism, denial, and family estrangement, it doesn’t quite work. The strength of Horace and Pete is in the age-old themes festering at its heart.
