Being a fan of the first series I was really hoping this one would be good. So far it's been a disappointment. The story line is slow, the cheesy teeny bopper characters are lame, and there's not much depth to the plot. The writers need to go back and watch the first season of heroes to see what made it great.

The first season of Heroes was pretty intense, and was surrounded by mystery. After a few seasons, I couldn't help but wonder why the show continued. The show-runners had big hopes for it because of its big budget, but not even all the CGI and Hayden Panittiere could save it. NOW without Hayden, and without Quinto, we have a boring reboot that starts off as slow as the last season of Heroes.

They've had years to get this right and listen to the fan base but at the moment it's looking like a duck in the water in the mould of seasons 2-4. There is hope it will get better but without the heart or relation to the characters the original season had in abundance I foresee this only being popular with over exuberant die hards and perhaps a new teen audience. I will continue to watch however, and look for the best. Expand

The series seems designed around what the creators might consider to be "cool" ideas thrown together into an incoherent plot. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. From the technical end of things, standard fair for the most part in cinematography, nothing that really stands out overall in that quarter, unlike the show’s prelude. The point of contention would have to be the computer animation for Miko in the videogame parts. While they weren’t heinous, with the budget that the production company has to make this show, they were still pretty sub-par and you would think they would fork over money for better CGI for such a big time production, even as a miniseries for television. Miko’s part is supposed to reflect an actual present day videogame, video games now-a-days have way better graphics.

The characters were… a mixed bag to say the least.

Noah Bennet (Jack Coleman reprising his role) and Quintin Frady (Henry Zebrowski) from Dark Matters were the most enjoyable for this premiere, their byplay with one another is fun to watch, and both show a promising character dynamic for future episodes as their motivations become further in sync with one another. The close second was Tommy Clarke (Robbie Kay) who shows some promise as an engaging character once they pull him away from the teenage melodrama. The weak parts would have to be Miko Otomo (Kiki Sukezane) so far; her character is…well, as one dimensional as her videogame persona, and there is no clear way to define her except awkward to watch, though whatever her story is, or is going to be, will hopefully improve her in later episodes.

The story…whoo…now there is another mixed bag.

There is some solid mystery, particularly working off of the prelude Dark Matters that was released prior to the premiere. The looming threat in the horizon is well hinted at, and there are a couple of plot lines that show promising development. Despite all that, this has yet to show the promise that the premiere of the original Heroes possessed. There was also an odd character arc going on with Miko and her fanboy, possible red-shirt hopefully, Ren and the whole videogame father needs rescue subplot going on. Frankly it was like these parts were written by an otaku working out some sort of amateurish fanfiction. It was just plain jarring compared to the rest of the narrative, what there is of one so far.

Overall there is some promising things here, such as the big mystery, some decent visuals here and there, a few good characters, but it has yet to really live up to the hype that this miniseries gained. Further future episode clip reveals hold some promise, something that will hopefully signal a gaining improvement as the show progresses, so we shall see.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Nostalgia effect and nifty gimmicks aside, Reborn is lacking charismatic characters and fascinating sci-fi flair to stand above its current peers, let alone the original series

Regardless of how the series ended, the first season of Heroes was amazing. It's a fascinating watch, capturing the imagination of sci-fi fans and casual viewers alike. Heroes Reborn produces similar effect, there's a brief touch of what once a great series and it plays the superheroes angle just right. However, as much as I want it to be a repeat of glory days, there are a few hindrances that significantly hamper the presentation, be it from technical production or writing.

The first anomaly starts with one of the main plots, involving Luke (Zachary Levi) and Joanne (Judith Shekoni. The two are vigilantes in path of vengeance, they hunt people with powers, casually named Evos. Joanne character is a mess, literally. She's one dimensional on her pursuit, yet almost instantly falters in first sight of problems.

She also seems to lack moral, merely minutes after her moaning scene she immediately opens fire onto some IT guys. Granted, she's in confusing situation, but these people are not evil masterminds, they are just ordinary humans, unarmed and already surrendered. It's not a good way for audience to sympathize with their cause.

The Japanese girl’s part is also low on presentation. Back when Hiro popped up in Times Square, it's nothing short of a blast. Now the young girl must content with terrible video game graphic for her so called power. The shift to this virtual world is jarring, and audience won't be fooled by the fake attempt of fan pleasing. Not to mention this makes her story detached from the rest, and it would've been better if they made a comic style of visual for her rather than cheap 3D.

Tommy (Robbie Kay) has the plot of average superhero origin. This doesn't mean his story is bad. There's a similarity to old Spider-Man here and there, although it can also appear outdated at times. The bullying and affinity to the sweet girl are predictable, although the actor is likeable enough to create the innocent personality.

Noah Bennet (Jack Coleman) as the mainstay from original is better than the rest, he understandably carries a lot of expectation. Most of the mystery or investigation aspect comes from his perspective, and although it's bordering on conspiracy, it works with nostalgia and occasional puzzle.

Heroes Reborn presents many perspectives, it also tries to produce social tension between evos and humans, which is definitely commendable, but there are many aspects that feel outdated. Realistically, it opens up against DC Three (Gotham, Arrow and Flash) and Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. While they're not entirely better, but each of them has more recent established fan base and at least an edge on either mystery or visual cinematography.

I'd love to be captivated like nearly a decade ago, and to its credit Heroes Reborn is a decent series, but it's lacking charismatic larger-than-life characters, mysterious twists and the fascinating sci-fi fantasy flair to stand out from the shadow of its predecessor, or even stand above its current peers.

I was in tuned for the first hour of the new series but when that Japanese girl went into a video game and seeing that lame ass CGI all my hopes went straight down the toilet. Hoping that the next episodes will be much more better.

Just not holding my interest. Not engaging with or developing empathy with the characters. Watchiung the original series, at least for the first season, I always felt a little tense - the show was getting to me. It just doesn;t have that adrenaline level anymore.

By the end, it's simply bad. They tried to get the show back on track again, but instead they made it even worse. There are some good episodes and some good storytelling, but it's mostly just characters going through the motions without much inspiration or creativity behind it.

Heroes Reborn would have to do something drastically different to distinguish itself in 2015, but all it seems to offer so far is more of the same.

Heroes Reborn is in a curious middle ground where it seems to be giving both too much and too little exposition.

Despite that all-too-familiar set-up, Heroes Reborn gets off to a promising start, with some fresh, sympathetic characters and a gentle introduction baited with a little mythology from the original to keep those fans on the hook.
