It’s TV chick lit, a rom-com in a foreign location where nothing bad ever happens and the cute protagonist gets laid a lot on her way to having it all. But the complicating thing about Emily in Paris—the best thing about it really, the thing that turns it from a trifle people enjoy into a curiosity they enjoy insulting—is how brittle its protagonist is. The warm and goofy and topical camaraderie of that show [“Sex and the City”] is nowhere apparent here. Nor are any laughs. There are no actual laugh lines here, just lines that let you know they were supposed to be funny. It brings light, in a year with so many misfortunes happening, but the critic wants just that, disgrace. It’s got a sparkling retro rom-com feel with regular montages of Parisian sites and Collins’ sweetly charming, continually-effervescent attitude. The supporting cast also boasts an assortment of entertaining types. Since it’s France, everyone’s outfits are fabulous. There’s no question that this is a signature Star project, which means it’s a lite confection with a winning cast and enjoyable situations.… Expand

Cliché after cliché after cliché... By the middle of the season it's not fun anymore, and by the end of the season it feels plainly disrespectful towards French culture. I can't deny it was entertaining, but I FELT I WAS WATCHING A CARTOON! Depiction of such a complex culture like theCliché after cliché after cliché...
