Nix knows how to dig deeper holes for his folks, while he broadens their motivations, sometimes recognized only along the way. Nix isn't bad at keeping the plot pot percolating, either.

The complex story, which includes a flashback to 10 months earlier, plus scenes with O’Mara’s therapist and memories of his child’s illness, finds the hero getting in deeper and deeper after impulsively trying to save a life.

O’Mara is intense as a man backed into a corner, but the series needs to do more with the supporting players.

Complications gets more interesting episode by episode, strengthened by good supporting performances and intriguing moral questions, even if creator Matt Nix sometimes struggles to shape his individual pieces into a cohesive whole.

O'Mara does his best to inject life, but the show's oddly dour tone simply makes Complications a sad case. [19 Jun 2015, p.57]

Outside of its offbeat inciting incident, nearly every storyline is hackneyed.

When a wannabe TV thriller doesn’t work, the show devolves into a morass of characters making repeated bad decisions, like “Groundhog Day” but without the intentional comedy.

Complications chooses antic over subtlety, banging around from one crazy plot development to another. O'Mara is a very likable actor and Szohr does her very best, but for reasons known only to himself, Nix eschews the black humor that made "Burn Notice" so brilliant, which is too bad.

Despite the strenuous efforts of creator Matt Nix, Ellison (Jason O'Mara) also appears to be trapped in a story that wants to be a movie, and seems ill-equipped to support an eight-episode series.

Everything is incredibly serious to the point where it becomes almost unintentionally laughable.

A series that too often feels like an episodic version of “Death Wish,” only with scrubs instead of trench coat.

Can you write a two-hour TV story based entirely on your characters making totally stupid decisions – one after the other after the other? Can you write a two-hour TV story based entirely on your characters making totally stupid decisions – one after the other after the other? “Complications” features an angry doctor and a street nurse, who both have the absolutely worst judgment possible. I won’t go into details in order to avoid a spoiler review. On the other hand I question whether or not anything can be written that would spoil this show any more than its writers and producers have accomplished. I have tried, but so far I cannot think of a worse show on television.

Come on USA! You are doing some pretty good stuff lately. This one apparently sneaked through your quality control department.
