Cobra Kai Season 5 is a showcase of the best elements of the series, despite a bit of roughness around the edges. The latest installment features some big laughs and impressive fights but also sheds a light on what's to come without feeling like it's just a set-up for the next season.

Crossing the streams with its sequels, the fifth season of "Cobra Kai" features heavy dollops of the second and third "The Karate Kid" movies while continue to carve out its own next-generation melodrama, all in extraordinarily nimble fashion. While it's not the best series on TV (OK, Netflix), there should be some kind of prize for the best revival culled from limited source material.

Season 5’s detour away from the dojo means that Cobra Kai itself took some time to reflect, grow, and change. The show is much better off for it.

You have to embrace the cheese in “Cobra Kai” because that’s half the fun. And to be clear, the show is enormous fun.

With a cast this big, and with so many intertwining soap-opera plotlines, it’s inevitable that the season would meander a bit. But bringing Griffith back as Silver turned out to be a masterful move on the part of the show, teasing out new dimensions to the show’s existing ruminations on revenge. It hasn’t quite swept the leg yet, but at least Cobra Kai is back on its feet.

If you fully embrace the absurdity of this world, Season 5 is a blast. But if you stop for a few seconds and think a little too hard about some of the story beats and twists, the seams start to show. But even with the seams, Cobra Kai remains as wildly compelling and fun as ever.

When Cobra Kai really clicks is when the nostalgia factor is balanced by the interactions of the current group of kids. That balance is certainly out of whack in the first two episodes, but it’s something we hope gets restored later in the season.

I will agree that some scenes are a little over dramatic and a little cringy with the acting but overall it Is the best season.

This review contains spoilers, click full review link to view. As preparation for Cobra Kai season 5, I watched Karate Kid part 3 for the first time. I must admit, back in the 80s, when these movies were coming out, me and my friends watched only the first movie, and totally enjoyed it. But year’s later, when Cobra Kai started off, they did a good job re-introducing some of the rather obscure, or should I say, less important characters like Chozen and Silver. I didn’t think Chozen’s role in Season 4 was anything special, but he really did a good job in the latest season. John Kreese and Terry Silver did a great job, too. I believe introducing the new characters and their stories spiced up the show. It got out of the teenage-school going kids’ drama and graduated to a show about adults, and for once, the Johnny Laurence VS Daniel La Russo feud took a comfortable back seat. I binge watched the entire season within a single day. It had a lot of action, and most of the characters saw some level of development. It was amusing to see Johnny in a responsible role, and Danny being the hot headed person. The final outing versus Silver had some of the best moments of the entire show. John Barnes, well, he wasn’t a very good addition, to be honest. His role in Karate Kid 3 was quite limited, too, and I felt he was added as an afterthought. His character didn’t add much to the show, unless he has some other roles to play in subsequent seasons. Seems Kumiko will have a larger role in Season 6. Speaking of season 6, I think the show has managed to squeeze the ‘Karate Kid’ lemon/orange to its fullest. If they do plan on making more seasons, they need to expand the story beyond Mr. Miyagi, John Kreese, Daniel and Johny Lawrence—they need new heroes, new rivalries, new enemies, and new challenges. It can be safely stated that the story arc with Kreese and Silver as villainous characters has ran its circle. It will be much boring to see these apparently destroyed sanseis making a grand comeback with their also apparently diminished dojo, Cobra Kai. I think Season V ended with a happy ending for all—there’s not much need for a season 6 at all. However, I would definitely see it if it does get made. Till then, I must say, apart from a few missed spots, I really enjoyed season 5 of cobra kai. Full Review »
