The planet was called 'Pluto', a name chosen by an 11-year-old girl from Oxford! To tell us about Pluto's discovery, Patrick Moore appeared on the show. It was Patrick's tenth appearance on Blue Peter since his first in December 1973, when he spent time comet spotting with presenter of the day, Peter Purves. To mark Patrick's many achievements, Simon awarded him a gold Blue Peter badge. Discovered on the 7th January 2000 by the Lowell Observatory, asteroid 16197 was this week officially named 'Bluepeter'. We were presented with the certificate by the International Astronomical Union. Asteroids must be named with one word, which is why blue and peter have been put together to ake 'Bluepeter'. We don't know its size but its brightness suggests that it is about 4km. At present it is about 2.5 AU (astronomical units) from both the Sun and Earth. The Lowell Observatory which spotted the asteroid is a privately owned astronomical research centre in Arizona its most famous work being the discovery of the planet Pluto, 75 years ago!
The photo of the 'Bluepeter' asteroid on the show was taken through the Faulkes telescope in Hawaii by a young astronomer. The Faulkes Telescope project allows school children to use high quality telescopes via the internet from their classrooms. Street Luge was introduced to the UK in 1995, just as it was gaining popularity in the USA. Californian skate boarders came up with the idea when they became bored with standing on their skate board. They discovered that lying down gave greater speed, greater control and much greater thrill. So, the Luge was made longer to accommodate the person lying down, the trucks wider, and the wheels thicker to provide greater stability and speed. Liz went to the Isle of Wight to take part in this extreme sport. Remember it is quite dangerous so if you do want to have a go, find a registered Street Luge club and take part safely! Based on the book by Robert Louis Stevenson, the three part drama 'Kidnapped' starts on Sunday 27th February on CBBC1 at 5.45pm. James Anthony Pearson, who stars in the drama, appeared on the show to talk about it. The drama chronicles the adventures of Breck and Balfour as they escape murder and shipwreck on a quest for justice, all set against the fierce social and political backdrop of 1760s Scotland.
