Unfortunately, the season's execution is frequently dismal. And although I didn't feel that the first season engaged in sadness porn or exploitation, I can't say the same for the second. It wallows, especially in later episodes. Using the trial as a structuring device might not have been a bad idea, except that there is no aspect of the trial that isn't absolutely ridiculous.

With each new revelation, each new flashback that adds additional context to one of last season’s flashbacks, it begins to feel less like a sensitive teen drama than like one of those forgettable Lost rip-offs that thought the key to success was introducing five new questions for every old one that gets answered. ... And each additional reason, each additional season, dilutes the impact of when we first heard [Hannah’s story].

The pace drags, the dialogue is unnatural and cheesy, the plot is dull and absurd, and most of the characters are still abhorrent. Watching is a chore, but there's no benefit at the end. There are zero reasons to put yourself through it.

This season, the producers have been more careful in portraying the taboo issue of suicide. After binge-watching 5 episodes, I have concluded that many aspects are much better than the first series, Katherine Langford and the main cast acting is at an all time high, the cinematography is phenomenal and the storyline is different, but is still very much like its predecessor, if not better. This will reach many teens. Full Review »

Season 2 fails the first season so badly that it should never have been produced...in many ways Season 2 completely dilutes most of what was great about Season 1.

Season 2 seems to be more interested in PC damage control, creating gray areas and being edgy than it does at telling a compelling story like the season before it. The entire season just feels like a hamster wheel experience, time passes but you don't feel like you've gone anywhere or done anything of any significance. I kept waiting for something big to happen but it never did and certainly never captured the "what happens next?" aspect that Season 1 did. The major plot lines are incredibly predictable and cliche. It looks as if there could be a setup for a Season 3 which is unfortunate.

TL;DR They should have kept this to the first season to preserve its magic. Nothing of any real significance happens in 13 hours and any small bits that do happen are massively predictable. This season ruined what should have been a classic.
