If you're looking for a twin-stick shooter that sets itself apart by offering a huge and varied campaign then Defenders of Ekron: Definitive Edition will surely not disappoint. Plus, the bonus Invaders of Ekron game is the icing on the cake.

HackyZack can be fun if you enjoy intensely challenging 2D games but for everyone else, it's simply too irritating to recommend.

Newbies who are easily impressed with any game that looks retro might enjoy Shikhondo: Soul Eater. However, if you're a hardcore shoot 'em up fan or even have some familiarity with the genre, you'll be rather disappointed with this offering.

I loved playing Spectrum's challenging scenarios and highly recommend it to any gamer who enjoys replaying and mastering stages.

Mixing genres usually results in interesting gaming experiences yet Vroom Kaboom is a bit too mixed up to be enjoyable.

Haunted Dungeons: Hyakki Castle may have interesting and satisfying dungeon crawling survival gameplay but its presentational aspects definitely take a lot of fun out of the equation.

I enjoyed Neonwall much more than I thought I would. If you have PlayStation VR and you're looking for a unique and challenging game then you could do a lot worse than this delightful offering.

While the core combat is mostly dull and uninspired, Nefarious still shines thanks to its witty writing, likeable characters, and enjoyable genre-swapping gameplay mechanics.

If the idea of a 2D platform shooter roguelike with minimalist visuals appeals to you then Gonner: Blueberry Edition will be a welcome addition to your gaming library. Just keep in mind; easily frustrated gamers need not apply.

I'm glad that they made Earth Defense Force 4.1: Wing Diver The Shooter as it's a solid fit for the goofy series. However, it simply doesn't provide enough satisfying gameplay to make it worth playing through more than a couple times.

If you love 2D platformers then MagiCat is definitely one that you don't want to miss. Its tight gameplay and charming world make it one of the most enjoyable indie experiences on the Switch.

On the surface, Anodyne looks a lot like the older Zelda games. As you start to dig deeper, you'll find that it strays quite a bit from this formula but unfortunately, it also ends up leaving behind a lot of what made games like Zelda fun in the first place.

In a time when dozens of awesome Bomberman games have already been released and the series recently made a comeback, this indie clone simply doesn't offer much substance that you can't already get from Hudson Soft's classic franchise.

As a port of one of the most enjoyable Kinect games, Boom Ball: Boost Edition simply isn't as fun with Joy-Cons as it is to stand beside a friend while virtually whacking balls with your bare hands.

If you enjoy arcade rail shooters and want to play an especially challenging one in virtual reality then I can't recommend Drone Striker highly enough. Blasting away its evil robot aliens is so much fun that it'll make your headset spin.

Games don't need deep stories and intricately rendered game worlds to be fun and Halloween Forever proves this through and through.

I'm a little disappointed with this first pack of DLC given that it's so short, the tomb isn't very interesting, and the two new modes are quite similar. However, I love that co-op mode is introduced as it's definitely the most promising addition. Here's hoping for more interesting scenery and lengthier challenges in future DLC packs.

A competitive twin-stick shooter with matches that play like Nidhogg is such a fantastic idea for a game. When you factor in the awesome Data East characters and stages, you're left with a nostalgia-fueled funfest that feels fresh and exciting.

Shoot Out has a generic name and what's here is exactly what you'd expect. However, it takes a lot of practice to be able to dispatch enemies before they shoot you which offers a steep yet rewarding learning curve.

As a compilation of the arcade and Sega Saturn versions of a shoot 'em up from the mid-'90s, Game Tengoku CruisinMix holds up impressively well. Here's hoping we get to see a port of GunBare! Game Tengoku 2 soon.

Of all the Touhou games that I've played so far, Gensokyo Defenders remains one of the best due to its unique and addictive gameplay. It's definitely rough around the edges but there's still a ton of fun to be had waging war with these charming ladies.

The library of PlayLink games has been growing a great deal recently so thankfully, Wordhunters is a worthwhile multiplayer experience that's filled with silly word-based mini-game mayhem.
