Mafia: Definitive Edition is a must-play for any fan of the franchise. Although it doesn't quite have the narrative cohesion of Mafia II, it still offers a memorable and gripping story that's set in a gorgeous virtual adaptation of 1930s America.

Curse of the Dead Gods is one of the most varied and gripping roguelikes that I've ever played so if you enjoy challenging combat with a wide variety of melee and ranged weaponry set in a dark and eerie game world then you'll love what it has in store.

The First Berserker: Khazan definitely feels old-school in its approach but its vast assortment of super-tough bosses and oodles of extras that are great fun to master make it stand out as an excellent Soulslike. Plus, you can wear goofy jars on your head.

Even with its faults, there's simply no denying just how special of a game Lost in Random is. From its awe-inspiring world to its ingenious gameplay, there's a lot to love in this incredible and memorable albeit often-frustrating adventure.

Even with its flaws, Detroit: Become Human marks a monumental moment in story-driven gaming. After all is said and done, the fact that your decisions have such a substantial impact reflects reality. The question is: will you make the right choices?

Everspace does so much right. It has an engaging story and immersive visuals that make you feel like you're in a Star Wars film and combat that always keeps you on the edge of your seat because even the weakest enemies can overwhelm you.

Cyber Shadow is definitely a genuine old-school experience which mostly works in its favour although it can be a frustrating test of patience at times. No matter which way you slice it, if you enjoy old-school 2D action games, playing Cyber Shadow is a must.

A Way Out is possibly the best cooperative video game ever created. Its movie-quality cinematography, intuitive and varied gameplay, and engaging story full of unique stand-out scenarios make it one incredibly memorable interactive experience.

I never thought these Neo Geo Pocket Color fighters could be this fun but The Match of the Millennium definitely proved me wrong.

Ys Memoire: The Oath in Felghana is one heck of a wild ride that acts as a wonderful nostalgic time capsule. At the same time, it's so maddeningly difficult on the normal setting and the poor sense of direction can occasionally be a tough pill to swallow.

Death Road to Canada may look like a generic indie game but it's surprisingly unique in its decision-based campaign. It's too bad that the gameplay relies so much on repetition and luck because it would have provided a much more satisfying experience if it didn't.

Super Rude Bear Resurrection may be the next great super-tough platformer but it doesn't quite reach the high notes of its predecessors. Also, if these kinds of games irritate you then you'll be better off hibernating for a bit longer this season.

This year's Jackbox Party Pack has some truly clever games that are thoroughly enjoyable with friends. The version of You Don't Know Jack may not live up to previous iterations but everything is still a blast to play.

As one of the better Musou spin-off games out there, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity is a welcome treat for Breath of the Wild fans. Its gameplay remains expectedly repetitive but there's still a ton of fun to be had with its variety of combat abilities.

Tell Me Why tells an engaging story of twins unraveling a mystery and forming a bond after being separated for most of their childhood. It's a more mature narrative set in a cozy Alaskan backdrop that could draw the attention of gamers who are interested in story-driven experiences yet may have been put off by all of the teen drama featured in previous Dontnod titles.

X-Morph: Defense is one of the most impressive and addictive games that I've played all year. The blend of twin-stick shooting and tower defense is perfect for some intense gameplay and the fact that you can enjoy it with a pal is the icing on the cake.

Cooperative adventures don't get much cuter or trickier than the wonderful ibb & obb. It's a must-play indie gem.

There aren't many VR stealth games so game devs can learn a lot from Budget Cuts' thrilling gameplay. Plus, its humour is a treat.

It pleases me to say that Shady Part of Me is one of the best surprises of the year so if you like indie puzzlers, you have to play this.

Get-A-Grip Chip makes it fun to replay levels over and over again in order to find their collectibles and climb the leaderboards.

Cuddly Forest Friends is a great game for youngsters as well as grown-ups with a soft spot for adorable and relaxing entertainment. Throw in a bunch of silly and well-done mini-games and you're left with a winning formula for a rather specific audience.

If you enjoy 2D puzzle platformers with lots of variety and collectibles then you'll adore Hatch Tales: A Heroic Hookshot Adventure.

Granblue Fantasy: Versus offers promising gameplay that's sure to delight fans of fighters. On the other hand, there's so little content that it's probably best to wait for some sort of complete edition before giving it a try.

As far as old-school racers go, Horizon Chase Turbo is one of the best and now is a great time to check it out with its cool new update.
