Super Destronaut DX is an arcade-ish indie title that recreates the classic Space Invaders experience in a competent-but-simplistic way. It isn’t necessarily a bad game, but it doesn’t offer enough new ideas to keep the player hooked.

198X is a nostalgic but incomplete-feeling tribute to Eighties games and their influence. Each of the five genres included is unique and equally stunning, as are the cut-scenes. The problem is that it ends quickly and without exploring each style to the fullest.

There is a lot to like about HYPERCHARGE Unboxed and it combines many elements to offer the variety of a rich kid’s toy box. Its dependence on online multiplayer could be its downfall, but here’s to hoping the community get behind it.

While the puzzles are uninspired, To the Moon isn’t your typical videogame. It takes the format and visuals of an old-school JRPG and melds them in a unique way, delivering a narrative that is beautiful, impactful, and not easily forgotten.

Sir Eatsalot is great on story and personality, but is undone by the pretty underwhelming platforming side of things. The touch-screen aspect, while unique, could be done away with to offer less irritation.

Red Bow will lure gamers in with its pixel-art visuals and promise of a top-down, creepy adventure. Whilst it may impress for a short while, it will ultimately leave them wishing the game had been much more than it is.

Jump Gunners is a good title for short bursts with friends in a party situation, but there’s little reason to revisit the game months down the line. It suffers from a lack of personality in its visuals, but at least there’s a good range of things to do.

MachiKnights -Blood Bagos- manages to feel uninspired thanks to being devoid of character, intrigue, and fun — ultimately resulting in the title merely feeling like further bloatware in an online marketplace that is already swimming in it.

Dreamwalker: Never Fall Asleep isn’t the best of Artifex Mundi’s Switch eShop offerings. It’s short, and the story isn’t as fleshed out as their other releases. It does feature enjoyable gameplay, though, so come here once you’ve finished the others.

Atelier Escha & Logy: Alchemists of the Dusk Sky DX is an improvement over the first installment in the Dusk Trilogy, but still implements the time management mechanic that hampers the exploration immensely, which goes against most of what the game is about.

Eclipse: Edge of Light is a narrative-led experience in which players race to uncover a tragic tale of power and corruption on an alien world. Originally developed for VR, the title still truly immerses the player from beginning to end on Switch.

Just like a terrible movie you can’t stop laughing at, Deadly Premonition is entertaining in all the ways it was not intended to be. Most of its elements are poor, but the culmination of all those terrible elements makes for a surprisingly entertaining experience.

SELF perfectly utilises the text-based RPG format to create a thrilling narrative in a confusing world, matched by a sinister aesthetic. I would recommend to players that value story over gameplay, however, as the bullet-dodging mini-games don’t offer any real challenge.

Shadow of the Loot Box begins promisingly, presenting itself as a clever knife that’s willing to cut through the bullshit of the Triple-A publisher economy. Unfortunately, it quickly descends into a repetitive and unfunny indie shooter.

Escape Doodland may offer a light and upbeat aesthetic, but the gameplay is more challenging than you’d expect from these visuals. When it works, it’s good and rather moreish, but the experience is inconsistent.

As fun as Red Hot Ricochet is to play when you’re with friends, it lacks that single-player component in order to really keep you entertained. Interest will quickly wane, leaving both you and your party looking elsewhere for further enjoyment.

    140
140 is a rhythm-based platformer in which the player controls a geometric shape as it travels through two-dimensional levels that shift in time to the underlying soundtrack. A joy to play, the game is a masterclass in rhythm-based game design.

Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE Encore will prove to be the Switch game many didn’t know they needed. It’s funky, fresh and full of personality, and is an exciting and inventive opener to 2020 on the Nintendo Switch.

Atelier Ayesha: The Alchemist of Dusk DX is a passable JRPG that hardcore fans of the genre will find positives in. However, minimal explanation for the main draw to the game, and the limiting of your time in the world are rough spots.

Dead End Job offers a good amount of fun, but the controls, and namely the difficulty in locking onto the required target, diminish the enjoyment somewhat. The humour and personality, however, make this a game that’s definitely worth checking out.

Coffee Crisis is an excellent take on the beat ’em up genre overflowing with 80s and 90s nostalgia and heavy metal, although it is a shorter experience than we would have liked. The humour and personality spill through to the point you’ll remember this one months down the line.

Heroland is very much a good concept rather than a good game, far too many shortcomings and and a lack of active gameplay make this a tough one to recommend. Unless you’re starved for things to play, look elsewhere.

Chaos on Deponia is a modern classic in the point-and-click adventure genre, but still fails to solve the issue of nonsensical puzzle-solving, even if the characters, setting, and story are endearing and charming from top to bottom.

Monster Jam Steel Titans is a competent racing title with some fun stunt sections, although it’s hampered by an extremely touchy physics system, and barren open world areas. Still, I felt like a kid playing with toys, which was enjoyable.

Nicky: The Home Alone Golf Ball is a clever, budget title that costs next-to-nothing and keeps you coming back for more. With time it’ll be harder to crack the leaderboard, so give it a go as soon as you can.

Seaking Hunter unfortunately comes nowhere close to the standard we now expect of mobile-to-Switch ports. Little to no thought was taken when considering the target platform and, as such, this game is better left at the bottom of the ocean.

We’ve all played a game like Boom Ball: Boost Edition, but we haven’t done it in 3D. You’ll have flashback to Wii Sports when your family is gathered around the TV waving Joy-Cons at the balls, but the best way to play it is sat-down with the touch-screen.

Disney TSUM TSUM FESTIVAL is a solid, fun party game that uses the chibi-style iconic characters well and, at the expense of the Switch Lite, makes use of its platform exclusivity by using the hardware in a ton of interesting ways.
