It may be a bit rough to read all the way through while sitting in front of a big plasma screen, but those with no other choice could do much worse.

If you've been burning with anticipation for a fantasy RPG on Sony's newest console, Bound by Flame may be worth a look – but be sure to keep your expectations lukewarm.

Nevertheless, if you haven’t played the PS3 or Vita versions, and you’re eager to enjoy some virtual chess, then this is the best option currently available, as it really looks sensational.

With a low price, it may be worth splitting the cost between close pals for an evening’s worth of entertainment – just make sure that you know what you’re getting into first.

A drab campaign and awful loading times underline this colossal misstep in the stage of history.

Despite its imperfections, an array of handy gameplay mechanics coupled with a colourful cast of characters provides just enough intrigue to justify the thirty-or-so hours that you'll spend level grinding your way through this adventure.

Outlast: Whistleblower doesn’t muck around with a formula that’s already proven to work, and it subsequently succeeds at extending the spooky atmosphere of Red Barrels’ survival horror release. The new campaign accompanies the original game well, and even improves upon it in many ways. It also ups the ante in the terror department, hitting harder and more frequently, without relying too heavily on jump scares.

Titan Attacks is a seriously addictive spin on a classic video game formula that’ll keep you playing beyond your first run through its one hundred stages.

No Heroes Allowed: No Puzzles Either! is an engrossing and devilishly entertaining experience. Absurdly tight gameplay coupled with charming presentation and surprisingly memorable music mean that it’s likely to eat at away at your spare time with gleeful abandon.

Combining 2D platforming, hack and slash action, and RPG elements, this title is sure to appeal to a broad variety of gamers looking for an adventure that is both accessible for long grinds or quick pick up and play bouts.

Starlight Inception is a hot mess.

If you've spent a lengthy amount of time with FIFA 14 on the PS4, 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil's visual quality and gameplay fluidity can take some getting used to, but this is still an enjoyable package if you've caught World Cup fever.

Horror games can be tricky to get right, but Daylight fails on virtually every front. It’s a shame to see such a promising product slump so spectacularly, but despite being a rather short affair, this is still a pain to play through.

Ethan: Meteor Hunter plays around with some interesting concepts, but although its pitched as Super Meat Boy meets Braid, it fails to do either justice. With frustrating controls and irritating puzzles, we recommend avoiding this one like the plague.

This PS3 port may be more stable than its counterparts, but that doesn’t redeem its archaic gameplay and bland visuals.

Stealth Inc: A Clone in the Dark - Ultimate Edition is definitely the most content complete version of Curve Studios’ espionage escapade, but that doesn’t prevent it from being best suited to portable play.

Trials Fusion is one of the best games on the PlayStation 4, there’s no doubt about that. Convince your friends to get it, and established relationships will turn sour faster than an Evel Knievel-esque stunt. Challenging, funny, and exciting – gaming rarely gets any better than this.

Alas, Sony’s signature baseball simulation has always prided itself on playing a great game of ball, and while this falls short in a few areas, it should still make a nice clean connection with fans of the sport.

It may be sneaking onto Sony’s handheld more silently than the cunning raccoon at the centre of its adventures, but The Sly Collection provides the best platforming antics that you can currently find on the pocketable format.

Conception II: Children of the Seven Stars is a strange title, but it offers an intriguing experience that’s let down by a few issues. Indeed, the bizarre story elements, off-putting sexual material, and repetitive gameplay mechanics may turn you away from this eccentric title, but look past these problems and you will find a way to appreciate its otherwise interesting narrative and entertaining cast.

Final Fantasy XIV Online: A Realm Reborn proves that Square Enix’s series is special, even when it’s presented as an MMO. Moreover, this excellent upgrade shows that the PS4 is capable of bringing PC quality online escapades into the living room.

Despite all of its issues, Dead Nation isn’t a bad game.

This instalment completely outshines its already excellent predecessors, and offers a breathtakingly action packed slice of fairytale-infused pie.

Invizimals: The Lost Kingdom is never inherently bad, but it’s far too basic to compete in a genre that’s brimming with better options.

SEGA has brilliantly crammed the entire Football Manager experience onto the Vita, without much of a break in quality.

Look past the faults and you may find some fun, but you’ll need patience to get there.

While this isn’t technically a new game, it offers a wealth of content not often seen in titles that can be purchased for $39.99, and it’s certainly the most improved iteration of all of the recent BlazBlue releases. Between that and the fact that it’s so inviting to both newcomers and series veterans alike, this is one fighter that you should not overlook.

Without question the biggest, best looking, and most refined Warriors title on the battlefield, Dynasty Warriors 8: Xtreme Legends Complete Edition is an absolute must buy for fans, while newcomers will find themselves jumping into the action at the most opportune time.

TowerFall: Ascension is a game that relies heavily on your social standing. The mechanics are entertaining, the presentation is charming, and the whole affair is top fun – assuming that you have some friends to play with.

While it demands a high level of investment, Deception IV: Blood Ties is still a decent game.

Simply put, succumbing to the slash-'em-up's slaughter has never been easier.

It’s without a doubt the best and most complete version of Ronimo Games' excellent eighties homage to date – but it never quite does enough to make it worth a double-dip.

If you also take into account the discounted price point, massive amount of variety, and local multiplayer, then it’s impossible not to recommend this dream package to anyone with even a passing interest in the side-scrolling genre.

If you're the sort of person that enjoys a challenge and doesn't mind overlooking a few rustier moments, buy a box of super absorbent tissues and give this a go.

Bursting with more attitude than a high school hardcore band, this out-of-control excursion effortlessly nails the sensation of possessing superpowers. It may put its plot forward a little too forcefully at first, but persevere and you’ll be richly rewarded with an appetising roster of outlandish abilities. While it does little to push the open world format forward, this is still a series that’s very much in bloom.

Luftrausers is a tremendously well polished action arcade package.

Ground Zeroes would undoubtedly make a powerful introductory mission to Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, so it seems a little insidious of Konami to hold it to ransom. That being said, we really can’t fault what little we played – as far as the mechanics and design are concerned – and although the additional content does go some way towards sweetening the pot, we find it difficult to recommend this on those merits alone.

While we wish that Rusty's expedition lasted a little longer and didn't require quite as much backtracking, there are still plenty of reasons to sink your pickaxe into this little gem.

While a few technical issues hold back the game’s waterfall of brilliance like a small dam, you still won’t want to miss out on the creativity streaming from this pretty pitcher.

Magus is not an entertaining game. It suffers from repetitive gameplay, bugs, glitches, and abhorrent visuals. Worse still, it’s expensive, with the release currently commanding a laughable $24.99 price point on the PlayStation Store. Put your time and money towards something better than this.

While it may not always feel fair, you’ll be hard pressed to find a game that’s as intense and rewarding as Dark Souls II.

While it’s still riddled with technical issues on occasion, very rarely does game writing soar this high.

If you can work through the mind numbing first couple of hours, Atelier Escha & Logy: Alchemists of the Dusk Sky blooms into an addictive JRPG. Much like an alchemical formula, the individual pieces of this concoction are less impressive than its whole – just don’t jump into the release expecting to make something out of nothing.

While it lacks the endearing appeal of some of its older siblings, The LEGO Movie Videogame is still a strong cinematic tie-in that serves as a perfect accompaniment to the big screen blockbuster – even if you should ensure that you visit the theatre first.

Dead Nation: Apocalypse Edition doesn’t solve the core gunplay issues that plagued the release’s original outing, but this is still a fine upgrade for those merely looking for some rotten flesh to fire at.

Tales of Symphonia deserves your attention. If you can stomach JRPGs at all, you owe it to yourself to check it out. The biggest disappointment in this compilation is the sequel, so we recommend picking up the first game cheaper from the PlayStation Store.

A truly brilliant television tie-in. Every scene is stuffed with references and Easter eggs, and the dialogue is so authentically written and acted that you really feel like you’re playing through an episode of the show. Performance issues and minor irritations do hold the experience back a touch, but this is still a must-play for fans of the franchise.

Gunslugs packs a real punch by giving you plenty of bang for your buck.

Contrary to what its name may suggest, Pac-Man Museum isn't a stuffy building stacked full of the mascot's bones, but is instead a great way to celebrate a classic franchise – assuming that you're willing to cough up the cash.

Lords of Shadow 2 falls short of the high bar set by its predecessor, with niggly control issues, a somewhat empty open world, and frustrating stealth sections sucking a bit of life out of the experience. Fortunately, fans of the original release will undoubtedly enjoy the exciting combat and stellar graphical design on offer here.

It’s more likely, then, that the developers thought that a popular name and a cheap budget would turn a profit – and with a boxed product and the promise of DLC on the way, we imagine that it’ll probably make a fortune.

At its blistering best, Strider is a joy to play – its silky smooth controls making it difficult to not feel like the unstoppable agent himself. It's a welcome return to a beloved franchise, but it falls just short of maintaining the momentum that's expected of it, and instead opts to slice its way into a new generation with some less than exhilarating gameplay additions.

Like a cheesy 80s pop record, Earth Defense Force 2025 is so bad that it’s almost quite good.

While there are glimmers of an outstanding experience, the title’s amalgamation of ideas never quite forms a perfect circuit, making this an interesting experiment that could have been so much more.

Outside of its gripping boss battles, Toukiden: The Age of Demons doesn't do much to get you excited.

Dustforce is a very enjoyable game for the most part, but its later levels suck the entertainment out of the experience, as it becomes little more than an exercise in anger management.

This second chapter picks up the ball from the first episode and runs with it.

Ys: Memories of Celceta doesn’t bring anything new to the action RPG table, but makes such strong use of its combat that it’s still hard to put down. It may not have the most engrossing narrative or original ideas, but it still manages to keep you hooked throughout the course of its campaign.

This is a touching, intelligent, and largely refreshing extension to the core escapade, and while it’s not exactly brimming with narrative revelations, it’s still a beautiful story that you shouldn’t let pass you by.

This title expertly fuses classic arcade staples with modern game design to provide a sleek gaming rush right in the palms of your hands.

Doki-Doki Universe is a unique and quirky timewaster that unfortunately runs out of steam due to a lack of challenge and variety in its gameplay. While the colourful characters and brilliant art style keep it off the scrap heap, those craving a more involved experience would be better off summoning a different title to add to their collection.

It’s not perfect, but Outlast is still arguably one of the best survival horror games in recent memory.

Featuring a colourful collection of memorable characters, some sweat-inducing gameplay, and a narrative that has more twists than a Hollyoaks omnibus, Spike Chunsoft's bloody tale of high school life will keep you engrossed from start to finish.

Surge Deluxe is a shockingly enjoyable experience built upon an engaging leaderboard system that constantly encourages you to up your game.
