In the end I became dangerously addicted to Has-Been Heroes. I couldn’t put the game down because of how much depth there is to the gameplay. Chaining melee and spell attacks across the 3 heroes and landing a ton of damage on an enemy is incredibly satisfying. Or that rewarding feeling you get when finally figuring out a strategy to defeat the boss and progressing further into the game. Make no mistake, Has-Been Heroes is a hard game and not for the faint of heart but if you enjoy a fun, rewarding challenge, at $20 it’s a must have for your Switch collection.

Kamiko is a fun pick-up and play experience, with great visuals, good gameplay, and makes for a fun retro-inspired experience. It’s worth exploring the game with each of the 3 characters just to see how different they actually play, which adds some replay value to the title. If you are looking for an inexpensive game for a weekend playthrough, Kamiko is a good pick.

The story has enough to keep you engaged and the inclusion of Star Fox is inspired. I don’t think this is the game that will reboot the toys-to-life genre, but I believe that it has enough to live on as a standard IP. I, for one, would be delighted to play through more adventures in the Starlink universe.

I dare to say Call of Juarez: Gunslinger is one of the best first-person shooters that’s on the Nintendo Switch. It may not be the most complete experience, (It took me around 6 hours to finish.) but it’s a fun enough experience that I instantly wanted to replay it on a harder difficulty. Should you want to fill out the various skill trees and collecting the remaining “Nuggets of Truth,” you’ll be receiving another 8-10 hours of glorious arcade shooting.

Other than that, the game is nice little package. It’s bursting with color and charm and the gameplay, while not new, is still pretty fun. While this definitely isn’t the kind of game that you’d be expecting to play on a home console, it’s still nice to have nonetheless. At only $5, Sunbreak Games’ semi-infinite runner should be a great addition to anyone looking for a fun, simple game for younger Wii U players.

Overall, you’re getting a massive amount of content in Assassin’s Creed: The Rebel Collection, with the port of Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag being one of the more impressive examples of an open-world game on Nintendo’s handheld and Assassin’s Creed Rogue being worthy of a playthrough if you haven’t yet played it. All in all, I didn’t expect to like Pokken Tournament DX as much as I ended up liking it. The learning curve and adjustment were pretty brutal, but once I got in tune with how the game operated, I found myself playing for hours and hours. If you didn’t pick up the Wii U version of the game, I highly suggest you check out Pokken Tournament DX as it really is the best version of the game. If you are a Wii U veteran of the series, there may not be enough here to warrant a second purchase, but diehard Pokken fans will want to check it out. Pokken Tournament DX is another fantastic Switch release and a game that fighting fans will want to check out.

I was a big fan of Sniper Elite 3 on Xbox One, and I really like Sniper Elite 3 Ultimate Edition on Switch. While it doesn’t have quite the same visual impact on Nintendo’s hardware, it is still a good-looking game. And the actual adventure is as good as ever. It’s a big step up from Sniper Elite V2 in terms of the narrative, map layout, and visuals. There are loads of content on offer here. If you rush through the main game you can finish in around 8 hours, but you’ll more likely spend somewhere between 15 and 30 hours working your way through the campaign. The extra single player missions are really nice and show how good Rebellion is at crafting stories. Including the DLC is a nice touch and makes this an absolute bargain at an already budget price.

Sadly, the problems that plagued the Wii release of No More Heroes are still present here. The overworld is a barren wasteland with not much to do. Strength training and performing jobs are tedious. Levels are linear and boxed in. Hit detection can be literally hit or miss. You can’t quickly retry a failed battle event. There are no autosaves. And unique to this release, Silvia’s phone calls no longer come through a speaker as they did with the Wiimote! Regardless, No More Heroes is still a blast to play. There’s something so satisfying about swinging your hands to slice someone in two. It has blemishes, for sure, but its main gameplay and sense of style win out in the end. Doom Eternal The Ancient Gods - Part One for the most part, is an excellent continuation of the main campaign. Some areas don't reach the heights of the previous chapter, but the gameplay is still as satisfying as it was before. A few new enemies added into the mix ensure that you are constantly on your toes, and all of this is complimented by yet another fantastic musical score. The Nintendo Switch version isn't the best way to experience the game by any means, however, it is still very much playable for those of you who want a great FPS title on the go.

All in all, I enjoyed The Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth+ a lot more than I should have. I’ve gotten a lot of playtime from the game and I don’t plan on stopping anytime soon, so the $39.99 price point (although higher than the competition) doesn’t bother me to have a nice physical copy and manual. Plus, the Switch version has some exclusive DLC not available on other platforms (yet), so it’s really the best version of Isaac to get. If you are looking for a stroll in hell with dark humor and fun top-down twin stick shooting, The Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth+ is a solid addition to the Switch.

There were a few lulls during my time with the game, but that just helped to highlight the times where I absolutely loved it. The visuals may be basic, but they work perfectly well for what the game tries to do. The music is delightful and a real boon to the feelings that the game evokes. Cattails is a game that you should consider adding to your library whether you are a cat lover or not.

Ultimately, Grandia HD Collection is two games that play very similarly but with opposite tones. Grandia is for bright-eyed young kids, and Grandia II is for their cynical older siblings. Yet they both have excellent dialogue, open dungeon design, and battle systems that invite customization. If people can forgive minor bugs and a lack of extra features, Grandia HD Collection is something all JRPG lovers should play if they haven’t already. And if you have already played these games, well, maybe wait for a discount.

Giga Wrecker Alt. is a fun action platformer that represents a fresh direction for Game Freak outside of the Pokémon realm. The game lacks in combative and traversal actions for its protagonist and doesn’t have the tightest controls. But it satisfies in level design and the unique way in which Reika interacts with the environment to solve puzzles and push forward in her quest.

Still, minor shortcomings do not hinder StarBlox Inc. At its core, the game is an absolute delight. Fighting tooth and nail over individual puzzle blocks is a Tetris mod I never knew I needed. Now that I’ve experienced it firsthand, however, I cannot recommend it enough. While it comes up a bit short of all-time indie multiplayer classics like Ultimate Chicken Horse and Towerfall, Starblox Inc. is still a challenging and unique game that is extremely rewarding to learn. I can see it spending a long time in my local multiplayer rotation. The perfectly-struck balance between the slow build of filling out your board and the satisfaction of knocking your friends into oblivion allows StarBlox Inc. to shoot for and land among the stars.

I had an amazing time with In Other Waters. It’s a game I’d happily play over and over just for the overall combination of colors, sounds, and exploration. The story acts as a reminder of why we should treat our oceans, and each other, with more kindness. If you’re even remotely interested in marine biology, you’ll never put your Switch down.

Vasilis isn’t going to be the type of game for someone who’s looking for a “fun” experience with engaging gameplay. Instead, it’s the sort of title that uses the artistic potential of video games to provide perspective. It excels in this area thanks to a unique presentation style and is worth the investment for those looking to play something different.

Overall, I found Blossom Tales to be a very good 2D Zelda clone. It was put together more competently than I expected from an Indie developer. That’s not a dig on Indie devs – it’s praise for a game done well enough that it only fell a few notches short of games like Minish Cap (though even shorter). If you are looking for an Adventure game that follows the top-down Zelda formula closely, there might not be a better game for you on the Nintendo Switch eShop than this one.

Life is Strange: True Colors is the best game in the series so far, without a doubt. The town of Haven Springs is full of excellent characters, with Alex Chen herself being one of the best protagonists we’ve seen in some time. The game does suffer from some pretty severe visual downgrades with the Switch release, and some of the additional minigames left us feeling a bit cold. Nevertheless, developer Deck Nine has crafted a fantastic narrative that you’ll be eager to see through to the very end. Reduced visual fidelity aside, Switch is a great place to experience True Colors.

Dragon Quest Builders takes all its notes from Minecraft, that’s no secret. Its cutesy art-style and bubbly characters feel right at home on a Nintendo platform. If you’re a fan of Minecraft and want something familiar with a different style and finesse, Dragon Quest Builders will scratch that itch. Unfortunately for die-hard Dragon Quest fans, you won’t get much out of this game that’s set in a universe you’re passionate about. Dragon Quest Builders on Switch brings near-PS4 quality graphics with the portable aspect of the PS Vita. If you’re going to play it anywhere, I recommend the Nintendo Switch.

Overall, Vampyr is an ambitious game made with a lot of love. Given how easy it is to become immersed in its world, I was able to forgive some of the more glaring flaws with its repetitive action-RPG combat. It’s not typical for a developer to give the player such power over a game’s world and characters, after all. This affords the game an immense amount of replayability that can also let you reshape your characterization of Reid. If you’re looking for something different this Halloween season, Vampyr is one of the most impressive horror games on the Nintendo Switch. If you’re sold on the concept, this game definitely deserves your attention.
