  1. I humbly submit that Cedric the Entertainer be required to give up the "Entertainer" portion of his nom de plume until he actually starts entertaining us.

The action scenes are exciting, the fantasy scenes are creative and the war scenes are brutal.
  2. Tykwer makes of all this murder and madness a concoction of improbable beauty and rare artistry. "Perfume" is not just the finest film of his career but easily one of the past year's most accomplished.
  3. A brilliant exploration into the implications of Freud’s theories on one family.
  4. Sadly, the whole affair is little more than ennui with a pedigree.

The problem with the film, despite the genius of craftmanship and cinematography, is that the film doesn't really have anything new to say.

The premise of Night at the Museum is definitely a bit more creative than the standard family films we are used to at this time of year, but the problem is that the film is marred with many gags that are outdated and therefore feel cheap.

If you're a college football fan, a fan of sports films or just a sports aficionado with a sense of history, this film is a safe bet.
  5. The amazing thing about Venus is that it's brutally honest about all this but at the same time funny as hell.
  6. Zhang Yimou is seriously off his game with the utterly ridiculous Curse of the Golden Flower, a new epic that feels like "Hero" meets "The Lion in Winter" meets "Peyton Place." The film is worthless as a serious work of art, but it may offer the jaded viewer a surplus source of MST3K-inspired wisecracks.
  7. Portraying the same 1945 confrontation from the vantage point of the Japanese was an inspired idea. Unfortunately, the movie it inspired is something of a letdown.

Overall, Norton's effect and Watts' able portrayal are not enough to move the misogyny of the narrative.

The acting in the film is grade-A, with Stallone bringing the more mumbled Rocky from the first film spliced with some rousing inspirational monologues when the moment is right (not forced, not preachy… just perfect).
  8. Dreamgirls is a better musical than "Chicago" or "Rent," but then, that isn't really saying much.

Overall, while the film is a gorgeous, nostalgic cinema experience, and there's definitely a multiple of mini-plots to unravel while you work towards the final resolution, the film comes up as a bit of a dud.
  9. Eragon is laughably bad, mind-bogglingly derivative, and easily one of the worst movies of the year.
  10. Especially to anyone with kids, the film packs some punch. Apart from that, The Pursuit of Happyness is emotionally manipulative and way too glossy to really hit home.

A series of conversations that are sometimes clever and sometimes feel like screenwriting exercises about the details of life, but are always well acted.

It's the kind of movie you watch on a rainy Saturday night with a glass of wine and a fire crackling in the fireplace. It's a film that's meant to be contemplated, but not discussed. And it's all about what happens when you take the easy way out.
  11. It's a reasonably entertaining actioner, and Zwick doesn't shy away from depicting violence or the horrors of war, but as a social statement it falls a little short. And emeralds are prettier anyway.
  12. Say what you want about Mel Gibson, but that sadomasochistic anti-Semite knows how to shoot a movie.
  13. It's a touching story of father and son type male bonding -- male bonding with Nick Nolte no less -- that's bound to find some audience members blubbering by film's end.
  14. Valeria Bertucelli and Ingrid Rubio as Elena and Natalia barely register for the camera, either in their adult incarnations or as the mod teens of 1975 Argentina.

While I did enjoy the ride I took with the film, after the lights came up I was just thrilled Lynch was allowed to create such a journey for us to go on. Imagine what the cinema world would be like if more great directors threw caution to the wind and followed their artistic vision. It's a world I'd like to see and I hope Lynch continues to pave the way.
  15. For an origin story about one of the most compelling and important characters in history, The Nativity Story is pretty damn boring.
  16. An uber-modern romance story that's powered with raw honesty and coated with wild imagination.

von Donnersmarck creates a milieu so realistic that the attention-worthy setting becomes just a backdrop, while an intricate tale, as suspenseful as it is humanistic, takes over.
  17. Turistas fails in almost every way a movie like this can.
  18. A great effort from first time feature filmmaker Jason Matzer.
  19. The ultimate rarity: a sequel that is miles ahead of its predecessor in every imaginable department.
