  1. Mister Roberts is a movie dedicated to anyone with a boring dead end job who wants to be a hero and has to decide whether to live honorably anyway.

Jack Hawkins is convincing in the lead role, while Joan Collins does what she does best, playing a ruthless, self-obsessed queen with no redeeming qualities – but we can’t help but love her.
  2. Dean’s style of method acting and sheer charisma jumps off the screen (along with artful cinematography).
  3. Okay, this isn’t a great film. Maybe it’s not even a good film. But for 1954, “The Last Time I Saw Paris” filled the bill with enough mindless silliness to keep people amused for two hours. Even today, it’s good for a cynical laugh.

It’s in the mice and birds friendly toward Cinderella, and the two bluebirds struggling to pick up the water-filled sponge to carry to Cinderella and splash it over her. Disney films have lasted for years by those good-natured moments and the superlative animation which has given it life for all these years.

Powell and Loy try gamely to work their magic and wit, but it’s no use anymore.
  4. Where Song of the South errs badly is in its regurgitation of the horrible myth that black slaves were always singing and happy and just loved working on massah’s plantation.
  5. The Stranger may not be at the same level as Citizen Kane, but what is? On its own terms, it is a fine and invigorating experience that deserves to be sought out and enjoyed.

The film’s rapid speed and its surplus of memorable supporting players helped to make sense of the absurd story. And if Benny was not ideally suited for the Bob Hope-level of bumbling misadventures or the Harold Lloyd-worthy climax involving a drop from a hotel rooftop, he gamely pushed ahead to keep the comedy at its patently ridiculous level.

Call it old-fashioned or old Hollywood fluff, Holiday Inn is a sweet, pleasant slice of another time in pop entertainment.

Bambi is not a great film. The film has a few memorably winning sequences which have become part of Disney pantheon. But in between these sequences are fairly dullish stretches of Disney kitsch, with too-cuddly animals in extreme states of too-cute behavior; there’s also a song score which is among Disney’s least interesting.
  6. His Girl Friday probably shouldn’t be approached lightly. You don’t want to try and watch this when you’re half asleep. His Girl Friday is probably best seen in the middle of crystal meth adventure. If you’re not paying attention you’ll probably miss all the jokes and not understand this movie.
  7. A masterpiece that was certainly decades ahead of its time.

As a fan of stop-motion animation and the works of Ray Harryhausen and Henry Sellick, King Kong will remain the granddaddy of the art form and remains a classic for all generations.
  8. The film, directed by Harry Beaumont, is considered the first-ever musical, creating a template that is still followed nearly a century later.
  9. Cinema has come a long way since the 1920s, so there’s no way to compare a product from that time to a similar one from the modern-day with any equitability. Wings, however, stands the test of time and remains a masterpiece.
  10. It feels like a lost gospel. It really is a magical film like nothing else.
  11. The Road to Patagonia is a beautiful travelogue. If you enjoy nature documentaries or even surfing documentaries, this one is for you. Check it out. It’s radically glorious.
