Lorde put her heart and soul into this new project, I have no doubts. However, Solar Power may lack emotions and feelings. The lyrics are pretty well written, but something is missing. The lyrics are pretty well written, but something is missing. It's like she doesn't have so much to say. Plus, according to the way Lorde described this new album, I was expecting lyrics more impressive, more powerful. I was expecting to feel something, but I barely did.
Next, the productions. This is high quality fore sure, but kind of repetitive. That guitar, I understand Lorde wanted a sound more chill, more soft, more simple on this album but all the songs sound the same. I can't find the originality and uniqueness of her previous albums. I wish there was at least one song more rythmic, more dancing, in the middle of the album just to " wake up " the listener. Indeed, Solar Power tends to fall into a soporific effect at some point.
At the end, the main issue is that it's quite difficult to pick a standout track, a " coup de coeur " from Solar Power, because there is not. The songs are mainly unremarkable. The Path, Fallen Fruit and Mood Ring are the only songs that stands out a bit. I'm not going to say the album is boring because it would be rude, but it's definitely too " slow " for me. It's a relaxing album but that's it.
I'm quite disappointed that Lorde released Solar Power at the end of August, when vacations come to an end and the beach and the sun are far away behind us. It's a summer album, I'm not seeing myself listening to Solar Power in October for example. It would have been better to release it in late June.
I'm proud of Lorde for testing a new musical style and reinventing herself ! But it is just not for me. I mean, it would have be great as an EP, but as an whole album after 4 years of waiting, it's a bit weak.

In short, this is a Jack Antonoff vanity project. Lorde shines on a few tracks (Stoned at the Nail Salon). Unfortunately, most of the album sounds like a "Chemtrails" B-Side. It's like Jack said, "hey Lorde, I have these songs Lana couldn't work with, can you?" Lorde proceeded to polish Jack's turd. Why did I give it a 9? Because it's still great overall and few tracks are amazing.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A solid 8 to me! i love this album so much that i have to create an account on this website to actually leave a review. After listen to 12 tracks from this album i can understand what Lorde wants us to feel. The warm of the sunset in summertime but slightly cold from the sadness of the rains we usually see in June and it’s just fascinating! She gives us so many moods in this whole album and you can also see her maturity in her lyrics “Spend all the evenings you can with the people who raised you
'Cause all the times they will change, it'll all come around” this is from “Stoned At The Nail Salon” this album just fits the situation I’m dealing with right now in the middle of the pandemic all we need is to be safe and happy ! Spending all the good time with our favorite people as much as possible cause we don’t know when the time comes we might lose them “Cause i don’t know , maybe i’m just stoned at the nail salon… again?” Her experience with heartbreaks and how she heals in “The Man With The Axe” “I guess I'll always be this way
Swallowed up by the words and halfway to space
But there by the fire, you offered your hand
And as I took it, I loved you, the boy with the plan”

Old sad habits from the first part gives me blues and fire when he offered his hand to her gives me yellow again she loves him “the boy with the plan” gives me green the perfect mixture between blue and yellow we got green it’s time to turn on the “Green Light” again forgiveness, compassion, understanding that’s the meaning of the color green in this song . A few last words
I don’t really care what other critics think about this album but it’s very special to me . This album needs to win The Grammys cause of the wholesomeness that we received from Lorde who gives us so many stories from her own experience throughout this album “Solar Power” . Love u Lorde

The lyrics are highly visual and at times nod at Lorde's former record 'Melodrama' with slight references and intentional contradictions. It is a completely new sound with clear influences of 60s and at times 2000s pop. If you go into 'Solar Power' expecting anything similar to 'Melodrama' you are in for some HUGE disappointment... It is not logical to compare these two albums because they are reflections of two very different stages in Lorde's life. One deals with sadness and teen angst while the other introduces a more mature input and flawless summery imagery that transports the listener to 'The Island'. Not many albums can do that. I'd recommend listening to the whole album a few times if you are struggling with the change in sound, I promise you'll love it.
A lot of us have already gotten everything we could from 'Melodrama', the last thing we wanted or expected was a follow up to that. My favourite lyric in the entire album is: 'Now the cherry black lipstick is gathering dust in the drawer, I don't need her anymore, 'cause I got this power.'

I think a lot of the people that think negatively of this album and are refusing to give it a chance should think deeply about that quote. Things change, just like the seasons

With each, and EVERY song, Ella confirmed it for me. This album, in all it's nooks and crannies, is a thank you. It's a love letter to every person who raised her, and quite literally, every musician who raised her Mum and Dad.

The vast majority of her loyal fans are not my age. Their sonic emotional journey through life is not that of me, my contemporaries or her Mum and Dad. But, they're going to absolutely ADORE Ella for introducing them to the music that storied her childhood, that shaped her musical sensibilities, that made her feel safe.

Thank you Ella, thank you Mr. O' Connor and thank you Ms. Yellich.

With all due respect and I mean ALL due respect, I'd like to offer a couple of facts that may answer a few of the questions you had of some Professional Critics disparate reviews

This Album is a sublime autobiography, love letter and thank you all rolled into one beautiful document. it is the most comprehensive, cohesive and complex ode to 60 years of musical styles, musical genres and specific artists all while sharing with us, her fans, the music that's bookmarked her life! What a precious gift!!!

Literally every song is delivered flawlessly; Often in multiple iconic vocal and musical styles that are both a tribute to specific artists, (sometimes just stylistically), but in almost every song, a tribute to a specific album, song AND lyric or refrain all at once. It's genius! To produce an album that's going to remind older folk like me of times long forgotten whilst telling her own story. That concurrently shares the musical influences of her life's journey to date with her contemporaries who may never ever have heard the music from the '60's and '70's that went onto influence the Pop stars of the future - is GENIUS!!! To be blunt, in my humble opinion - this is the most complicated, complex and comprehensive compendium of 60 years of "Pop" music ever produced in a single Album.

This album will keep giving to every listener for decades to come because it's handed her fans THE KEY to a life times journey in music.

Given that she has synesthesia, I assume that Lorde must have had bright and shiny colors in mind when making ‘Solar Power’. However, my own synesthesia makes me see the artist’s third record as no other than a pale and tasteless shade of grey.
In her third album, Lorde clearly finds herself hesitating between three main directions. She goes from early 2000s summer tracks that seem to come out from a teen rom-com's ending credits (hello Robyn and Natalie Imbruglia), to 70s psychedelia and to 60s bonfire hippie folk – ‘Fallen Fruit’ almost sounds like a song from the Mamas & the Papas. This summery musical journey would have been enjoyable had Lorde not failed to capture the thrill, the dreaminess and the emotion of the aforementioned genres.
Having lost her creative energy and her love for risks, Ella Yelich-O’Connor now seems to have become your typical indie artist, recording minimalistic songs while high, writing pseudo-woke lyrics and listening to ‘super-dark-bands-you’ve-never-heard-of’ such as The Velvet Underground and Led Zeppelin. The result of Lorde’s transformation falls flat and feels boring, dull and even sleepy at times. It is all the more frustrating that muffled guitars instrumentals seem to be reused in virtually every song, giving the impression that the album only consists of one painfully long song.
Four years after ‘Melodrama’, which was cathartic and full of emotion, Lorde wants us to believe she has turned into some kind tree-hugging, meditating hippie prophet. The sound of bongos, cicadas, pipes and the Bollywoodian vibe are there to show that the New Zealand star has reconnected with Mother Nature and is now mature enough to give 'deep' advice about life and how to enjoy it best. Yet, 'wise' Lorde – which kinda sounds like a more hollow version of Lana del Rey and a happy Phoebe Bridgers – does not display any of the sharp cheeky lyrics, addictive beats and intelligent harmonies she got famous for in the first place.
When commenting her creative process for this record, Lorde said she wanted to make a 'weed' record and, in my humble opinion, getting high might possibly be the only way to appreciate this album. But despite all the criticism, there is still a light of hope. First of all, some songs do stand out (the more upbeat 'Solar Power' and 'Mood Ring' as well as 'Big Star' and 'Oceanic Feeling') and when listening to them, I realized what Lorde had in mind when making the record and how amazing of a summer album it could have been with a little more creativity and variation.
Second of all, after making a masterpiece like Melodrama, we can forgive her for this kind of disappointment. Though I must say it saddens me to have to wait another four years to see her release another project.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. In general, I f***ing love this album. There's a few songs I don't vibe with as much as others, so I guess you could say there's a few skips for me. But overall, I think she really nailed the project.

The themes that she wove into the album as a whole are present in every track - to varying degrees- so I'd say that all the songs work synergistically and listening to the whole album has a much greater affect on you than just some of the songs.

Oceanic Feelings is an unequivocal masterpiece.

I think lyrically and VOCALLY is this her best album, she perfectly balancing between her amazing lower register to heady tones and her falsetto. She sounds great and this album is very personal. Lorde said true when she said on album aren't any weak lines, all are amazing. This is definitely my favorite album by her.
Solar Power is 10/10 for me:
My ranking: 1. Mood Ring, 2. California, 3. Secrets From A Girl (Who's Seen It All), 4. Hold No Grudge
    5. Solar Power, 6. Fallen Fruit, 7. Stoned At The Nail Salon, 8. Helen Of Troy, 9. The Path, 10. Oceanic Feeling, 11. Big Star, 12. Dominoes, 13. The Man With The Axe, 14. Leader Of A New Regime
Can we talk about Mood Ring for a little bit? That song is absolute perfection. Strong 60s influence and early 2000s pop influence, it's catchy, amazing vocals and amazing lyrics. I think maybe Lorde's best song.

A few months ago, I was truly scared because I thought it was impossible to make an album that was on the same level as Melodrama. However, this album is magnificent. Lorde did it again. Listening to it is an out of this world experience. Lorde just keeps making art.

perfect album, deep smooth and low melodies but perfect album, definitely Lorde always surprises in his musical line to remember how that teenager talked about social problems in Pure Heroine to then end a Melodramatic relationship to begin to reflect on his life and how the energy surrounds it Solar Power is different but not far from what Lorde represent very good album

While Lorde’s lyrics still cut deep as she reaches the quarter life mark. Introspective and tongue in cheek. Solar Power is another solid body of work. But listening to this album, you do wonder, if Lorde collaborated with a different producer instead of Jack, what would this album sound like?

I love Lorde! She's my favorite singer, but I'm disappointed! I always try to be open minded when an artist I like change their sound or voice, but I really love Lorde from "Pure Heroine" her deep voice and the beats... I love Melodrama too, I heard it so much that it would be ruined if it was a fisical CD, so I expected more from this one! :/

Acoustic albums can be good, however, this album is acoustic, boring, and poorly crafted. Almost all of the songs are 4 chord progressions with no personality or whatsoever around them. It's a clear downgrade for Lorde to write about Zodiac, an attempt to sell while she claims to not care about money.

Lorde does not make music to easily digest on the first go-around. this is a new sound for Lorde and music all together; however, it also excuses early 2000s Natasha Bedingfield's 'Unwritten' in songs like Mood Ring, Secrets of a Girl, The Path. The slower songs are unique to Lorde and honestly refreshed how different it is from the other girl's jack antonoff has been working with. I think that the lyrics are hard to relate because she makes music we learn to relate to and grow from. i did not understand the pain and all experiences Lorde attempted to convey at first with Melodrama, but over time it was the most beautiful record that anyone could find something to relate to in the song writing, but as I have said, that takes time. I rate this a 10/10 album as it is remarkably stunning. Sounds like a summer daydream through and through. Lorde makes masterpieces and that is the only thing to expect from Solar Power. Expand

All these connections Lorde is trying to make: her strange pastiche imagination of the ’70s, that random spoken word interlude by Robyn about climate change, and the themes of “sun healing,” never fully reach each other. Often, they come off as disingenuous and out of touch more than they read as brilliant, or comical. Whether the album is one big prank, or just one majorly failed experiment, the gist of having the “privilege to ignore” is lost in translation. All you are left with is just a handful of pretty alright songs.

If you're riding and vibing with Lorde, this bright shapelessness is superb mood music. If you're not riding her wave, Solar Power can seem elusive, even cloying, as it circles and sways with a smile.

This might not be the album that everyone wanted from Lorde, but it’s a solid, dreamy effort that deserves exploration. There’s plenty here worthy of attention if you can focus for long enough.
