Highlights are the futuristic thumping club banger Cry About It Later, the somber dance floor release of Teary Eyes, the humbling reflections on Only Love and What Makes a Woman, and the irresistible sex appeal of Tucked. Katy seems to have found her footing, and is owning her brand. Katy is an artists that is bubblegum by choice. Katy doesn’t need to make pop records, but pop music needs Katy Perry.… Expand

    I dont trust how the critics work by giving this album low rates because I do believe that it served it's purpose and it is to make the people smile.     There’s not one bad song on this record. Katy released an album she was proud of herself, one that was authentic and truthful. A part of me feels like we got the old Katy back but a much more mature and grown one. I’m proud to say the least.

    This album is BEAUTIFUL it has meaning, it has dance songs, love songs, songs that talk about her daughter, and her life. She must've pissed someone very big in the industry to be receiving such feedback from these "critics" but you wanna see the real score? Look at what the real people have to say and F*CK these arrogant "critics".

    My expectations were low after witness, but holy **** this album is so ****ing good, every song is a bop my favorites are only love, tucked and teary eyes. One of my favorite albums released this year, good job ms Perry!!
    Ps: those who gave the album negative reviews you're just hating, there's no way anyone can dislike this album

    It is a very excellent album, it fluctuates in different sounds - but in a cohesive way and that maintains its concept. We see a Katy, who has remained vulnerable in several previous situations (as in her documentary: Part of Me), showing that that joy shown previously as Sweets and Fireworks was only superficial and that did not portray her reality. The ballads on the album are incredible, and what Katy does best, since we see incredible vocals on Daisies.
    Tucked is about an "delusional relationship" and at the same time it's a joy song, that's so much awesome to 'see' on a song.
    Those are just two examples that represent the album very well, which is very worth listening to.    … Expand

    Without fleeting moments of bad taste, Perry does indeed sound mature, but she's also not quite as fun. That's a conscious choice, though. Smile is intended to evoke memories of her frivolous younger days while pointing toward a sustainable pop future.

    Like Joanne before Chromatica, Smile plays like a necessary centering exercise, indulging her insecurities and less surefire instincts. If Witness was overdetermined, Smile is an earnest exhale, for better or for worse. It delivers an image of her journey towards inner peace that is honest (if corny) and catchy (if not exactly inventive).
