    This album is, I can say for sure, her best since "Teenage Dream" (2010). My top 3 tracks are Not the End of the World, Resilient and Harleys In Hawaii, but honestly all tracks are hits-worthy and nowhere near mediocre. Metacritic is just tasteless af.

With 80’s disco and melodically nostalgic elements in “Cry About It Later”, “Champagne Problems” and “Tucked”, a club euphoric throwback sound of “Teary Eyes”, powerhouse pure pop perfection with “Never Really Over”Katy Perry’s new album Smile is her latest effort to come back in the pop scene. I must say this is her most cohesive album that she had released so far in her entire career. With 80’s disco and melodically nostalgic elements in “Cry About It Later”, “Champagne Problems” and “Tucked”, a club euphoric throwback sound of “Teary Eyes”, powerhouse pure pop perfection with “Never Really Over” and trap-hiphop infused track that is “Not The End Of The World”, Katy undeniably delivered different elements in music genres that most of the critics called out her for not experimenting and staying on her comfort zone. Production wise, it’s a solid record, given the fact that the instrumentations, synths and sonics are not repetitive. Lyrically, Katy has consistently delivered coherent topics such as hope, resilience, love and happiness which are the basic foundations for the entire album. If you have observed, there are 4 parts that are sub-divided each having 3 songs in it that tell a story in the album, which she decently offered thus making the album well coordinated. In conclusion, I think Katy Perry released one of the most solid pop record in a while. Something that you would give another shot after the initial listen.     Without fleeting moments of bad taste, Perry does indeed sound mature, but she's also not quite as fun. That's a conscious choice, though. Smile is intended to evoke memories of her frivolous younger days while pointing toward a sustainable pop future.

    While Perry finds the occasional moment of quality here (Smile and Tucked both feel like the best possible music we could get from Katy Perry in 2020), Smile is an album searching for an identity—and when it fails, it falls back on lazy writing.

    Like Joanne before Chromatica, Smile plays like a necessary centering exercise, indulging her insecurities and less surefire instincts. If Witness was overdetermined, Smile is an earnest exhale, for better or for worse. It delivers an image of her journey towards inner peace that is honest (if corny) and catchy (if not exactly inventive).
