It's very...experimental, and Madonna put definitely too much auto-tune on her vocals...
For normal, casual listeners the best choices from this album would probably be "Crave" and "Crazy", because from of all of this album they sound the most normal.

What a masterpiece. She’s the Queen of Pop for a reason. "Madame X" was a true return to form for Madonna after two trashy, dated, trend chasing albums ("Hard Candy" & "MDNA") and the good but way too long and a bit uninspired "Rebel Heart". This album is exactly what you want from a Madonna album and I didn’t think that she would ever serve us a gem like this. It’s creative, innovative, and experimental. It addressed serious issues such as gun violence ("God Control") but also has Dance bops that Madonna is known for ("I Don’t Search I Find"). It’s also her most diverse work in ages as it incorporates elements of latin music, reggaeton, trap, dancehall, EDM, deep house etc. and Madonna sings in three languages on the album (English, Spanish & Portuguese).

Madame X is Madonna’s most bizarre and ambitious album since “American Life”. This record is the lovechild of her magnum opus, 2005’s “Confessions On A Dance Floor” and the iconic “Like A Prayer” But with a modern twist. The album opens with the sexy Latin pop track “Medellin“ featuring Maluma. The duo’s vocals blend ever so smoothly while chanting lyrics to one another. “Dark Ballet” isMadame X is Madonna’s most bizarre and ambitious album since “American Life”. “Dark Ballet” is one of the most out there songs on the album featuring a long piano break and a theatrical robotic chant and a spoken word Interlude. Madonna Is completely unapologetic telling those who disagree to I will not denounce the things that I have said”. The song is hauntingly beautiful witty an eerie tone. God control is a disco masterpiece with an enchanting and odd chorus. “Future” is a low point of the album playing it safe production wise and feeling a bit out of place on the record. The song could have been decent if it didn’t feature Quavo who just sounds bored. “Batuka” is cute with an almost tribal feel where we hear the Lisbon influence on the record filled with drums and chants. “Killers Who Zaire Partying” is one of the boldest tracks on the album yet that’s not necessarily a good thing. The song isn’t bad it simply drains on too long. “Crave” is one of the catchiest tracks on the record yet doesn’t feeling generic. Swae Lee’s vocals perfectly complement Madonna’s as the two sing about lov. It’s an absolutely beautiful song. “Crazy” is one of the least discussed tracks on the record but is also one of the best! Madonna’s lines of Portuguese add something special and pleasing to the song. The track is slower paced giving a relaxing vibe. This song goes through Madonna’s thoughts longing for love and and telling her lover she isn’t”wont let you drive me crazy” but my favorite lyric is the nostalgic “I bend my knees for you like a Prayer”. Madonna has this magic in giving nods to her older work. “Rebel heart” was filled with it aswell. Come Alive is a poppy fun track with simple and pleasant production. “Extreme Occident” is a darker track with a twangy instrumental. Still trying to decipher the lyrics in this one but it’s very intriguing. “Faz Gostoso” is the most upbeat and fun song on the album featuring Anitra. They’re vocals blend so well you can barely tell who is who. This song is so well done. I can see it taking off and smashing the charts if chosen as a single. **** I’m Loca” is another collab with Maluma yet almost a polar opposite of the first. This track is upbeat and sexy. For some reason I have an odd love for the way Madge pronounces **** “I Dont Search i find” sounds like a B-side to a Confessions on a dance floor. It’s an absolute masterpiece straight out of 70’s disco. “Looking For Mercy” is a longing ballad with some of her best vocals on the album. “I Rise” finished off the record perfectly with replay value and catchy lyrics. It’s an anthem for gun control and and peace. This record is powerful. There’s parts that make you dance, parts that make you cry, and parts that make you feel nostalgic for the past. Madonna took a huge risk on this album. Her 14th studio record and she isn’t slowing down. Madonna’s ambition alone deserves endless praise. This is her greatest record in over a decade. Madame X is a masterpiece. . discusses Expand

Madonna has had many hits and global best seller albums through her long career. What can be said for sure is that each one of them presented a different sound and a new reinvention of Madonna's image to accompany the concept of the album. It is also true that most of her albums were relying on a big leading single that would turn heads and set the overall feel of the album. Confessions onMadonna has had many hits and global best seller albums through her long career. What can be said for sure is that each one of them presented a different sound and a new reinvention of Madonna's image to accompany the concept of the album. It is also true that most of her albums were relying on a big leading single that would turn heads and set the overall feel of the album. Confessions on a dance floor was a best seller because of Hung up and Hard Candy was a hit because of 4 Minutes. In Madame X each song has each own identity and to fully appreciate the album you will need to listen from start to finish. If I had to describe the album in a single sentence I would say it is American Life with ethnic sounds. It resembles American Life because of Mirwais productions and the political messages of the lyrics (God Control, Batuka, Dark Ballet, Future). However in Madame X Madonna offers more uplifting global sounds (Medellin, Faz Gostoz, **** I'm Loca) that make the album richer and less sterilised than American Life. The ballads included are excellent and complement the album perfectly (Killers who are partying, Looking for Mercy, Extreme Occident). The album will definetlety divide the fans because it is so different to her previous releases however it never crosses the boundaries of a pop album. Madame X is a far cry from the uninspiring Rebel Heart and the cheesy MDNA. It is also light years away from the outdated sound of Hard Candy. Fans should definitely give it a chance. Moving away from USA made a marked turn to Madonna's sound and Madame X shows how she can still reinvent her sound again and again and again. Expand

One of her best works in a decade! Bizarre, intense wtih beautiful lyrics and a strong political message. Madonna is and always will be the Queen of Pop for her capacity of reivention. Madame X proves it.

It's a incredible and experimental piece of arte. "Batuka" is something really unique. Extreme Occident and Killers Who Are Partying are unbelieveblie tracks. Even the median tracks that were released before the album, become great in the contest of Madame X.

Un album completamente distinto a todo lo que hemos visto de la reina, tiene muy buenos ritmos y muy buenas letras lo único malo es el abuso de autotune pero aun así su mejor álbum desde confession on a dance floor

Just one word: Batuka. This is enough for me to say that this album is a pure masterpiece. And do you want other words? Okay, I'll say God Control or Faz Gostoso or I Don't Search I Find or Medellin and I can just continue to say all the songs. Madonna is back again with an eclectic and excellent work, with different genres and contents all mixed up perfectly. A masterpiece.

An album that belongs to the world and that shows why reinvention is one of the most important concepts in one's career. From America, to Brazil, to Portugal and to Morocco, Madame X invites you to "a culture ride". My early faves: God Control, Batuka, Crazy, Come Alive, I Don't Search I Find, Looking for Mercy. The transition to disco sounds in "God Control" might be the peak position of the album sonically. With "Batuka", she proves once again that she is the only postmodern artist alive in music. Probably another artist would use the sounds of batuque just like that. However, Madonna mingles the folk sounds with auto-tunes which is so to the point. (All hail to Mirwais Ahmadzaï!) There are also songs in the album that have the potential to hit the top 40 in charts such as Crave, Crazy and Come Alive.

There are songs that might have made me rate this album 9 or 8, but Madonna's zeal in novelty in music stopped me. Therefore, 10 points go to the queen of reinvention.

Madame X is not just her best since Confessions on a Dancefloor. It's American Life's lost twin sister. It's Music's ugly cousin. It's Ray of Light's deranged daughter. A misfit of an album that demands to be heard. Stunning.

I am a huge Madonna fan, and more to the point a fan of music progression. Madonna is the Queen of pop-music and the Queen of re-invention. I applaud her ability to change her style and experiment as much as she does with her fashion. My criticism is with the treatment of her voice on the album, as she vocodes her way (to a Kanye ‘808 and Heartbreaks’ point) through 15 tracks.

Madame X itself is a solid effort, and more importantly harkens not only to her ‘Ray of Light’ era (through the exploration of world music), but also opens the door for Latin artists Maluma and Anitta to the mainstream. I also appreciate the raw and personal lyrics found in tracks such as ‘Killers Who Are Partying’ and ‘God Control’. What is missing is an element of engagement with the listener as Madonna tries, and only somewhat succeeds, to create depth in modern production tactics.

Listen to: God Control, Dark Ballet, Crazy

There’s no potential hits that might appeal to Billboard Hot 100 but that’s the beauty of this album . It’s not a desperate attempts to gain chart records like Rebel Heart or MDNA and M works best when she went back to trusted producers like Mirwais or perhaps, living in Europe has helped her to gain fresher ideas which resulted in a more organic sound. Critics failed to recognize the beauty of the bizarre and they cannot separate her alter ego Madame X from the real life Madonna which resulted in misleading judgements. To all those fans who complained that she should make another LAP or ROL or COADF, you should know that M only made music if she wants to and if you cannot move forward with these innovative and fresh sound then go home and play The Immaculate Collection then. Thanks for making new music. If new generations compare the old music with theirs then they will realize that new music comes from the old and has lost its meaning just for reaching the charts. Anyways only a couple has more than her 12 number ones and no female artist has sold more than Madonna.

An album that did not come to follow trends or play streamings, because she sings away from the comfort zone and with her feet on the ground, when she says in Portuguese that the world is wild and the road is lonely. Lonely because they are few artists with their visibility giving voice to causes that need to be heard. The scenario she describes in God Control is frighteningly the picture of a global politics we live here in Brazil or the USA. Madonna proves in Madame X how much is needed and once again unites pop and art under the eyes of an artist who has seen a lot and feels privileged to be able to continue being heard. Madame X enters the Hall of her great albums and best of all is when she says that it will not stop just because you want. Long life the queen Expand

Overall, Madonna’s fourteenth album Madame X feels as if Mirwais had mostly completed a decent run-of-the-mill modern pop record, albeit with a cool hotch-potch global feel; hip nods in place to fado, dub and other micro-genres dunked amongst the trap and retro disco. But then just before sign-off, Herself went through the top-lines with a sharpie. ... None of these carefully curated flourishes feel as if they truly live inside the ‘whole’ of this music. Instead it all feels plonked on top of a template.
