    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This album is absolutely incredible to me! It shows how much Taylor has matured in both her lyricism and just as a person. The stories that she made to inspire most of the songs are heartbreaking but also relatable as a listener. When i first listened to the album, it gave me major cottagecore vibes, and all the songs paint such a vivid image even though they are stripped of all the backing tracks,etc. and just Taylor. I can guarantee that most of the songs can be put on a playlist called "sad hours" or something because it is a very different tone than most of the music that Taylor has made in the past. It really fits the tone though of our current state in the world with the pandemic. Overall this album had me almost in tears not going to lie! My top songs (which to be honest they are brilliant) are august, betty, and mirrorball. All the songs are 1000/10 in my book though.… Expand

    Although I'm still in utter shock at the unexpected release of "Folklore", I am even more in shock at how well-crafted it is. Arguably, this might be Taylor's best songwriting to date. Despite releasing some of the biggest country and pop albums in the last 14 years, Taylor has outdone herself. Although not full of her traditional anthems, "Folklore" makes up in lyrical depth,Although I'm still in utter shock at the unexpected release of "Folklore", I am even more in shock at how well-crafted it is. Arguably, this might be Taylor's best songwriting to date. Despite releasing some of the biggest country and pop albums in the last 14 years, Taylor has outdone herself. Although not full of her traditional anthems, "Folklore" makes up in lyrical depth, cohesiveness, and her signature storytelling. Drawing from her experiences, as well as stories of others and her imagination, Swift delivers near lyrical perfection. From references to several of her past recordings (see exile, this is me trying, invisible string, etc) to the love triangle trilogy (cardigan, august, & betty), this album is it's own story told through 16 incredible narratives. By working with Bon Iver, Jack Antonoff, Aaron Dessner, William Bowery (theories state this is actually Swift's boyfriend, Joe Alwyn), and many others, Swift was able to make one of the best, if not the best, album of the year. You don't have to be a Swiftie to recognize how truly incredible this new album is. My favorites include: the 1, my tears ricochet, exile, and epiphany.… Expand

Taylor Swift has not only managed to bring back her amazing personal storytelling and beautiful melodies, but she then showed that she can write such gorgeous pieces of art (WITH A NEW SOUND) about others!     Each song is slightly different, some leaning more towards pop, some leaning toward country while others seem to be strictly alternative or indie. Folklore is quite different from her previous albums but this style of music perfectly fits with her incredible songwriting and storytelling abilities. Heartbreakingly brilliant.

Many have worried that after Taylor has found love and a happy relationship, she's no longer able to produce deep cuts like All Too Well and Last Kiss. She gladly proves them wrong on folklore. The production is much more bare compared to the bright and in-your-face bops of 1989 and reputation, which really lets the lyrics shine. She doesn't try to impress with high notes and crazy melodies, instead focusing on telling the stories that make up the concept of the album. Although most of the songs are supposed to be from other people's viewpoints, you can certainly tell when Taylor has also drawn inspiration from her own experiences, giving us more mature versions of her previous songs. I have waited for so long for Taylor to explore and dig deep into this kind of music, and I was worried she never would after reputation and Lover. For this album, she no longer cares about charting and sales and pleasing the majority of the public. The result is a beautiful and heart-wrenching masterpiece that showcases what she is truly good at, rather than what she thinks the public wants. This album has been the best surprise Taylor could've ever dropped, especially during quarantine, and will surely leave a long-lasting imprint on how the public perceives her and what kind of music she releases in the future.… Expand

    These 16 tracks (17 on the deluxe version) play out quite pleasurably in their entirety, the joins between Swift, Dessner and Antonoff ultimately only of niche interest. But Swift’s powerful songs reach their climaxes with bittersweet orchestrations, rather than blows to the solar plexus or a ringing in the ears. Everything hovers; little truly lands.
